This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, now with many more trims and AWD.
What’s new for 2023? As before the Toyota hybrid system pairs a 1.8L 4-cylinder but with a re-engineered drive motor and lithium-ion battery. The new hybrid system includes a newly developed lithium-ion battery that’s located under the rear seat to lower the centre of gravity and maximize trunk cargo capacity.
The updated Toyota Corolla hybrid gains more power and traction with electronic on-demand AWD which employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. This hybrid is matched to an e-CVT and has a combined 138 horsepower, FWD and AWD options are available.
The Toyota Corolla hybrid offers 5.3” of ground clearance and gets a freshened exterior look with a new front fascia, LED daytime running lights, an updated rear bumper, standard LED headlights, LED taillights, 15” wheels and a tire repair kit. In the US, 16” wheels are standard. The higher trims get redesigned LED headlamps, an all-new sport diffuser, 18” gloss graphite coloured alloy wheels and a new colour called Underground which you see on our top trim test model.
Standard features include, a 7” multi-information display (Canada) 4.2” (US) 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 6-speaker audio system, fabric upholstery, manual heated front seats and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 including blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. In the US, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert are not standard but available in a package.
The Toyota Corolla hybrid AWD model gets great fuel economy, 15”/16” wheels 4.6L/100 km, 51 MPG city and 5.4L/100 km, 43 MPG highway. 18” wheels 5.0L/100 km, 47 MPG city and 5.7L/100 km, 41 MPG highway.
There are new regulations in place for the Canadian market, all pricing now includes, freight and delivery, dealer fees and levies. LE FWD $28,865 CAD, LE AWD $30,365 CAD, SE AWD $32,765 CAD and XSE AWD $37,165 CAD.
In the US MSRP LE FWD $22,800 USD, LE AWD $24,200 USD, SE FWD $25,240 USD, SE AWD $26,640 USD, SE Infrared FWD $25,775 USD, SE Infrared AWD $27,175 USD and XLE FWD $26,600 USD.

I just bought a 2023 Toyota Corolla LE hybrid several weeks ago (June of 2023). On the first tank of gas I babied it for break in and got over 60 mpg. 😅. My last five years I had been driving the Toyota Avalon. For my first 600 miles I have been very impressed with this car. The seating is very comfortable and it handles much better than I expected. I bought the Corolla for its efficiency and reliability and I’m a happy owner.

Hope you're surviving the snow today! Nice to see the Corolla hybrid be available on sportier trims, I was looking at a 2022 but I'd have had to swap the bumpers, put a spoiler on, buy the wheels, I wanted the XSE look; in the end I got a Camry SE where I could get a hybrid with the sport appearance.

I have a 2023 SE Hybrid AWD Infrared Corolla. I love my car and look forward to driving it. I live in Wyoming and have found the AWD really helps in the snow, and much better than my 2012 Prius. Only complaint, complaint to myself, is that I would have much preferred the leather-style seats with motorized seat adjustment. I did get the premium option and love the JBL stereo. I paid $30K and change for mine.

The Corolla is an outstanding car IMO. It has good room but more than that it is well built, has a quite comfortable and supple ride over rough roads and good seats. It has very good handling too. Yes, it makes more noise than more expensive cars on the highway but for the price, it's really refined.

If someone want's a little more than the basics in the base trims, I feel like the SE AWD Hybrid is the sweet spot. I was seriously considering a new Prius, but was turned off by the pricing... they definitely did move it upmarket. SE AWD hybrid comes in just under the price of the base trim Prius, with all taxes and fees included. I think it's a no-brainer and a good value - considering the prices of most other vehicles on the market today. I'll be trying to get my hands on one in the coming months.

Love the red boots Andrea. This review is spot on in terms of what things are good and what are not. I have noticed it before in your videos, but this time felt compelled to comment. It is so nice (especially you Andrea) to see both reviewers holding the steering wheel on the manner in which it was designed for you to hold it, namely, the 9 and 3 positions. You set a great example for others by doing this. Now,…. if we could just get other car reviewers to do the same.

One small gripe i have with this generation of Corolls: the Endless Beebing!! The car beebs and complains about everything now, like a ford or a GM. They changed the beeber sound too to something much more ANNOYING. It really takes away from the scerene and calm demeanor of the vehicle. I'm considering it too but it's a lot more money not just in upfront cost. I believe the LE basically has what, 15-inch wheels? When you have to replace tires or rims, it will cost a lot more on the SE than LE. Not to mention, smaller car tires are better at taking shock from potholes than larger Wheels which in the context of Canada, we have very car dependant infrastructure that is always crumbling because of its heavy car dependency in both urban and rural areas, so personally, I might just go with LE with steel rims instead of Alloy

  • @KennethScharf
    @KennethScharf ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wish the Corolla hybrid was available in a hatchback model. But that would compete with the Prius..... Still, I like my new '23 Corolla LE Hybrid AWD. I got a package that adds the smart key system, blind spot warning, and alloy 16" wheels. It's not up to the posh of the SE, but gets a bit better milage at a lower price point. I can live without the mood roof in New England, might have liked the heated seats (although the standard cloth seats are well insulated and were comfortable in 10F weather). Road noise not an issue on the highway, and no problems merging onto interstate traffic. Please note that the AWD motor might only be active in wheel slip conditions not adding any acceleration torque on dry roads.
BTW, Toyota's hybrid system is unique. The so called transmission uses a unique planetary gear system to combine the output of the ICE with that of an electric motor/generator, as well as driving a second motor generator and the front wheel differential. One of the motor generators charges the battery from the ICE and acts as the engine starter. The other motor generator is the primary drive for the front wheels, and also provides regenerative breaking. In what would be the third gear of a 3 speed automatic transmission, the ICE drives the front wheels 'directly'. In reverse, 1st and 2nd gears the engine drives a motor generator providing electrical power to the other motor generator to drive the front wheels. The battery either provides some power, or is charged by excess power available. An electronic motor driver then provides throttle and effective gear ratio control. The system monitors the kinetic energy to decide the right combination of power distribution for the current driving conditions. So it's both a parallel and a serial hybrid setup, and can also run as an EV only (when the battery charge is above a critical level) with the engine shut down (usually when going down hill, starting from a dead stop, or running on level ground at a constant speed). With it's new (and larger) Li Ion battery the 2023 model has a longer EV mode range, but note the hybrid isn't an EV, it will always end up using the ICE engine. The battery is simply capturing excess energy produced by the engine or during braking and then using that energy to overcome inertia when accelerating. That's how the car can get it's incredible MPG rating in urban driving stop and go traffic. Hybrids get better mileage in city driving than on the highway, but the hybrid system does improve even highway mpg over pure ICE vehicles.

I love how we have a reliable company making AWD (technically eAWD) sedans for Canada. I don't want to buy an overpriced/oversized SUV just to get eAWD for the winter months where the road is constantly slick even when it's not snowing.
That being said, the one thing I will change if I ever acquire on anytime soon, is to get steel rims. Every urban centre in Canada that I know looks like a f****** artillery range after a snap freeze with all the potholes everywhere. Way cheaper and better to have steel rims than alloy in the event of hitting the pothole that will burst my tire.

One problem with my 2023 Corolla hybrid is the fancy headlights. In the center area directly in front of you are two shadows that stick down into the lit part. The first time I drove the car at night while turning, it literally looked like an animal running across the street directly in front of the car. I jammed on my brakes so I would not hit it. Only to realize it was a defect in the headlight array. My dealer said to me that the lights are not adjustable so just get used to it. Maybe they will fix it in the future. The real problem will be the day an actual animal is running across my path and I ignore it and hit it. This is a real safety problem with this headlight design and get used to it is not a proper response.

Great review Andrea & Zack. But one question….I just test drove the 23’ Toyota Corolla LE AWD Hybrid & couldn’t get past the annoying whistle/buzz/“rheeeee” noise that it makes every now & then? Was it the hybrid system? The “warning” system? The brake pads? Dealer rep said “really won’t notice it with radio and/or AC on?! Say What?? Drove a 2020 Corolla Hybrid and there was no such noise. I knew that Toyota changed the hybrid electric motor for their 23’s - is that the cause for the new whistle sound. (And I get it - for reverse - it’s a necessary warning noise. But that’s not the issue with this whistling noise with acceleration.) Thanks guys….keep up your top notch reviews. You guys notice things that other reviewers skip entirely. And - more importantly - you call a spade a spade. 👍🙋‍♂️

With a price difference of $2600 after taxes and all fees between the 2023 Corolla LE hybrid and non-hybrid in Ontario, which would you choose? I've looked at the added & missing features between both and the biggest thing for me is the missing spare tire in the Hybrid, which I can just seperately buy a spare and the missing tools. I'm guessing the Hybrid is worth the extra cost? Lots of people say the regular 2.0 Liter gas engine (non-hybrid) is more powerful and still fuel efficient. Hmm...

Its reliability is solid as a rock. It has excellent resale value. The only problem is, under Corolla family, there will be a Corolla Cross hybrid. Cabin is super quiet compared to my mom's Hyundai Elantra Hybrid but I felt the steering wasn't responsive even, same with braking.
