- Alexander McQueen’s life story is one of the most beautiful, yet tragic in all of fashion. In this video we’ll talk about how he got his start on London’s Savile Row, the funny story of how he ended up at Central Saint Martins, his appointment at a legendary fashion house, and the launch of his world famous label ‘Alexander McQueen’. We will also address the often forgotten downside that comes with fame and riches - as McQueen struggled to cope with the world around him despite his sudden rise to stardom. One thing to note about his controversial show where the models were made to look battered: Lee's abuser was his sister's then husband, who also frequently physically abused her. He was exposed to violence against women in his life as a child, and im sure that played a role in that show. He has stated that part of his desire in women's fashion was to make clothes that made women feel powerful and almost terrifying to others. It seems that a lot of his past trauma is reflected in his collections.

Yes he was from a rough bit of south east London and the men in his family would have all been a bit rough, and homophobic too. He probably really had to hide his sexuality until he got out of the house and went up west end and went clubbing at Heaven. A lot of gay men, probably most, have been beaten up by homophobes and he would have then had even more in common with the women in his family.
Completely unrelated, but that clip where a model is taking her clothes off and he gestures the cameraman to pull the camera up, warms my heart so much.
I have so much respect and gratitude for men who do simple yet meaningful things like that, specially those who are in a position of power over the women.
Some of you will complain it's "the bare minimun" and "nothing to applaud", yadda yadda, , but when you've roamed this planet as long as I have you'll know how rare attitudes like these are, unfortunately.

I caught this and it's one of those examples I hope other men take to heart. I have a mom and a sister. This is how a man needs to treat a woman.
Especially rare considering how hyper-sexist and gender stereotypical the time was (the late 90’s to early 2000’s)
Alexander McQueen is someone who died too soon, but he achieved what most ppl hope for, which is to leave behind an unforgettable legacy. His name will never die.

As an American you may not understand the nuanced relationship of class and names in England. Lee is a working class name, Alexander is not. Isabella Blow was from an aristocratic background. Lee is a name to grate on posh ears and she would understand that his fashion label, selling expensive clothing, from an expensive address to rich clients would need a socially acceptable moniker.

Leaving school at 16 and going to college is a standard thing to do in the UK…’school’ ends at 16 after which people either start working, go to college to learn a trade or to begin studying for a levels in preparation for university. It may have been unusual for him to choose to study fashion at college, but it’s not like he ‘dropped out’ of school.

Please try to talk to someone even about random things, just talk!!! Get things out of you, it will make you feel lighter.. there are also numbers to call and just talk, free, you don’t have to tell them who you are.. they are there to support. Don’t stay home alone, force yourself to get out. One more thing.. that might sound awkward; allow yourself, even push yourself to get angry like really mad. You cannot be mad and depressed at the same time. Think about what or who you’re thinking about while you’re depressed and get mad at them. Promise it works. It will at least get you out of your depression. I don’t know you but I can tell you are an amazing person. And I’m sure some people really really love you. You are worthy!
I always loved fashion, but there’s only been two designers that made an impact in my life, imagination and how can I be creative in any medium, John Galliano and Lee McQueen. To say his death was a shock to me was an understatement, I still cry went I watch videos about his life, like this one.
I still can remember the first time I watched Plato’s Atlantis, my absolute favorite collection of his. The sheer beauty of every design, how the same fabric was apply different to make each garment unique but still something cohesive and part of larger experience...
Words like genius, icon and legend get thrown around so easy nowadays but without a doubt, those three words represent Lee and they still fall short of what his artistry truly was.
John Galliano liked of Adolf Hitler. He was fired of Christian Dior, after prejudiced comments about Holocaust. Now He works for Martins Margiela.
I idolized him when i was in high school. I saw the video of Number 13 and was completely blown away. His death was incredibly shocking and to have lost his visionary mind was a significant loss to the fashion world.

I can relate to the trash bag incident in this story. In the 90's I was a photojournalist for a small college town newspaper in Illinois. Where storage and archiving of photos and negatives was never a priority. So when tasked with the job of sorting through them I used their trash bags for temporary storage. Combine that with an inexperienced (lazy) cleaning crew, and well you can guess the rest. I learned a big lesson there.
McQueen was one of the first designers I took notice of and fell in love with. I started telling my friends about his shows and not long after he passed. That drew me even closer to his work. Hands down my favorite designer
One of the very few designers I respect. There is a lot of his work which I don't like at all, but I can't deny he was incredibly skilled and very talented. He is proof that great sewing skills is prerequisite to a great fashion career. His V&A exhibition was the best fashion exhibition I've been to.

The rebel of high fashion. One of the greatest at evoking emotion from his shows. Rest In Peace to Lee Alexander McQueen. Long live a legend.
YES!! That is something I say almost everytime I speak of McQueen. His ability to evoke emotions. Typically multiple polarizing emotions even, yet some how in tandem. The dark and the beautiful intertwined so perfectly the two coalesce. The 2011 met gala, Savage Beauty, I feel did an exquisite job of portraying his work in such a way that it captured those emotions, yet allowed you to still take it all in in a digestible way. Tbh, looking at that many pieces of his, all at once, could be like a cacophony of the eyes. Lol So much to take in, so much detail and texture and ofc the emotions. It could be easy to miss something. And with work like his you don't want to miss a thing ofc. So, the way they chose to split it up not in a chronological order but in a inspirational order makes sense and works really well. It will probably forever be my favorite exhibit the gala ever premieres.

in victorian times, loved ones traded locks of hair and made rings and chains to hold lockets with either a living or passed human's or even a pet's photo. There are huge art works incorporating hair. Morning or memorial hair jewelry has been around since even the middle ages.SO~ it shouldn't seem odd at all that Lee understood that tradition whilst he was making his graduate collection. It was another type of fashion from those times he was portraying in that collection. I think a mere 5000 pounds was quite the bargain for all that amazing work. Genius often works for nothing because the very chromosomes that GENIUS arises from is a drive that is prima and can not be stifled.

“Horror and beauty may not be so different, after all?” “The struggle of beauty to overcome horror”, is more like the truth. In McQueen’s sad case, horror won. Hopefully, like the Bird of Phoenix, McQueen’s label will still rise out of the ashes, leaving horror permanently behind.
