Well, if you are really good at the game, know where all the enemies are and all of that nonsense, that is certainly doable. Karl didn't mean by "casual" "casual gamers" or a very fun and relaxed thing, but more like casual as in a regular playtrough.

Why did it take so long to discover you can double back on the turret? It seems like one of the first strategies you'd try to counter slow turning or minimal aim-cone opponents.
From my understanding, there's two basic reasons. First off, if you have the HP to spend getting shot by an enemy behind you speeds you up in Goldeneye. So in a lower-difficulty speedrun having the turret shoot you as you run down the vent improves your time, and thinking about how to not get shot by it is reserved for the apex speedrun category. The second reason is that they'd already demonstrated a difficult strategy that would allow them to destroy the turret without even slowing down, so doubling back would be a guaranteed time loss over a success using the harder strategy when the point of the thing is already to avoid a slightly longer time loss from the easiest strategy of grabbing the armor.
Fred's comment pretty much covers it, but I might as well add another small detail as to why this concept may have taken so long to be discovered by runners: To put it simply, every single turret across the entire rest of the game is positioned in a location that explicitly prevents the player from executing this specific type of maneuver. The fact that this single one can be is very likely an oversight on the part of the dev team, who were probably well aware of this potential weakness because in every other case where tanking damage for speed boosts _isn't_ optimal, it's because the thing is either at the far end of a corridor or in an open space too large for the player to cross directly (and in those cases they're pretty much always backed up by regular enemies as well. Just look at the final room here as an example, albeit an extreme one compared to some of the regular levels) There's a good chunk of them and they're all pretty much like that to some extent or another, so it stands to reason that the idea of "If I can't tank it I have to shoot it" is deeply ingrained in the minds of many people who played this game in general, let alone speedrunners.
I always love when 20 year old games fine a new strategy that feels so obvious in hind sight. You always think that "new strategy that beats old record" will be some crazy clip or some weird tech that causes you to move faster, but here it's the old "get it's attention, make it turn around, then run past it"
