Encaenia, Oxford, June 19th 2024

I walk around central Oxford on the day of Encaenia, the University's main academic ceremony, and the one at which honorary degrees are awarded. This year, the six honorands include Michael Palin from Monty Python.
Encaenia consists of a breakfast with champagne and peaches and strawberries, a procession from there to the Sheldonian Theatre, the awarding of the degrees and some general speech-making (in Latin!), a lunch, and a garden party. These are only for University members with the appropriate qualifications, and the procession route may be blocked off. However, I film what I can of the procession, showing the processants' academic dress. I also look for academic dress around the city centre before the breakfast.
