Abandoned Shops, Oxford, June 18th 2024

  • Oxford has wonderful buildings, but also huge neglect. In this video, I follow a trail of abandoned and derelict shops - and dirt, grime and pigeon droppings - from the top of Walton Street, up Little Clarendon Street, along Magdalen Street, George Street and Park End Street, and up Botley Road.
    In Walton Street, I also look at four landmarks: the Phoenix, Oxford University Press, Freuds, and the Blavatnik.

    How sad to see. I grew up in the Abingdon area in the sixties and seventies and loved my days visiting Oxford with my parents and when I was little older going to see United at the old Manor ground. Unfortunately this huge neglect appears to have affected many 'picturesque' towns and cities throughout the UK.

      Thanks for saying. I had an odd thought about this: the number of abandoned shops is about the same as the number of shops in the rebuilt Westgate shopping centre. So why bother with the Westgate? Use the spaces we already have instead, and keep the city centre vibrant.
