Walking Oxford
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ค. 2024
"The countryside invades the city", it is said of Oxford. We need walk only five or ten minutes to get into the countryside and be surprisingly isolated from noise and traffic, on paths to delightful local villages and scenery. This channel shows some of my favourite routes, as well as events, weather, art and music that I've encountered while walking.
I also film Oxford streets. The city has an elaborate history, which includes streams, bridges, bathing places, the railway and canal, local builders, factories, shops past and present: I have filmed about these already, and will do more. If you lived in Oxford and would like to see how your road is now, or a favourite pub, or a beauty spot, please ask.

Filming at Worcester College (long version), Oxford, January 16th 2025
From the distance, I see film lights outside Worcester College, and go to see what's happening. This video is a longer version of th-cam.com/video/-rdilP4lv5U/w-d-xo.html . It carries on after that one ends, with shots of how the trees and buildings look in the extreme glare of the film lights.

Afternoon Walk Finding Sun in North Oxford, January 15th 2025

This is the day after th-cam.com/video/aZdoULOehFc/w-d-xo.html , and it's the weather I wanted, with clear skies and singing birds. I take a turn through near North Oxford, walking from Walton Street through the north side of the University Observatory Quarter, along Woodstock Road to Bevington Road, thence to Banbury Road, north until Norham Road, and then along Norham Road to Fyfield Road, so...

This is th-cam.com/video/aZdoULOehFc/w-d-xo.html , a walk through North Oxford, speeded up four times so that it takes 12 minutes. You may not catch much of my voice, but for those short of time, it will give a quick impression of the brick- and tree-scapes of North Oxford. Which, a member of the Oxford Union once told me, was the best place in the world to live. For route and details, see the ...
Afternoon Walk Seeking Sun, Spring and Cherry Blossom in North Oxford, January 14th 2025

With hints of sun and birdsong in the air, it seems a good time to look for spring. And if it is spring, North Oxford is the best place to appreciate it, with its many trees and - eventually - cherry blossom. So I start an afternoon walk from Observatory Crescent shops and St. Bernard's Road. From there, I go up Woodstock Road to Church Walk, along North Parade, up Banbury Road to Park Town, an...

The bitter weather that kept me inside for days has eased, so I go on an evening stroll around the city centre. I start from the Co-op in Walton Street where I was shopping, then walk through the University Observatory Quarter, past the I.T. It's a mild dry day, good enough to sit outside on the seats and tubs in Broad Street. Ideal weather to relax and feast at the Christmas market: still running, with its après-ski-chalet bar, a singer, and goodies ranging from German chocolate kisses and frankfurters to English fudge, cherry preserves, and Greek gyros. I believe these wooden bridges all get their names from the undergraduates and masters who used to walk and ramble along to North and South Hinksey. Lewis, Tolkien, Carol, Oscar Wilde etc. Some of these were involved in a program to improve relations with 'town' people by helping with harvests and building small roads and pathways for locals. These wooden bridges were installed in the mid-90s, replacing older ones which were even more dangerous and deathly. I think the Dip of happiness relates to an area where there two meadows open up creating the almost cross-roads like arrangement with the trail - Workers would gather there and rest for lunch and ale supplied by the local pubs on hot harvest days.
13:27 - To the right of here is where a young man accidentally walked in to the river whilst walking home from a night out in Oxford. He lived with his family on North Hinksey Lane. Was the old bridge back then, was very narrow (also green). Think of him every time I walk by. RIP
Is there anything more quintessentially English than the pealing of church bells through the changes? I’m not sure how many sets of ‘working’ bells there are in Oxford, but the largest is Christ Church (it would be) with 12.
The KDF9 was 48-bit mainframe computer built by English Electric (later ICL*). The KDF9 was designed primarily for mathematical and scientific computing. It’s sister KDF8 was designed for commercial computing. *When ICL still existed, those in the industry half-jokingly said that stood for ‘It’s Coming Later’ and that IBM stood for ‘It’s Being Mended’.
St Hugh’s & Lady Margaret Hall? St Benet’s Hall was the last all-male to accept women.
Ah yes - Dead Week - I can completely comprehend that !!!!! After retiring from Oxford University, my wife and I moved away to another country, but I continued to order my essential books from Blackwell`s as I have done for over fifty years. Even so, my final order for the year passing was placed in early December, with the first of the New Year orders being placed January 14th - not much point between those dates :) Thank you once again - appreciated !!!!
Hello,, and thank you, for braving what I know can be quite chilly weather in January. The other female only colleges ( at the time ) that you missed was Lady Margaret Hall and Hartford College. I had only just started my time as an undergrad ( mid 1960`s ) when Oxford University began the at times highly contentious issue of making all colleges bi-gender or co-educational. I seem to recall it was a process that required nearly twenty eight years to be fully implemented. Thanks again, brought memories of some forty years of academic life, and the traveling to and from thereof quite back in focus - we had a flat in North Oxford :)
Lovely video thanks. Will look out for more I don’t really explore Botley enough!
It's always sad when history goes under a JCB.
Any idea what the road works all along the Woodstock road are for as they have taken months. Why have they been happening. It makes parking by the Chemist hard. I started using it as a chemist when it was open till 10pm and I am still with them despite them moving to new management and installing their stupid telephone system
Best guess is a friend's: it's nearing the end of the financial year, and the council want to spend money so they can justify the same budget next year. I don't really know, but as you say, huge numbers of works all over, and they have taken months. I had a lot of trouble with RSI pain in my shoulder years ago, and was very glad to be able to go to that chemist at 9:30pm and get relief. No longer.
The Standard has been there for _decades_
Fair point. I must use the word more. Of course, in Oxford, years shade into decades, which shade into centuries, which shade into millennia. So I get used to thinking of everything as happening last year, even if it was the University being founded.
15:34 As I recall, what used to be there was old folks’ accommodation or a home. It’s been more than 25 years since it was replaced. Taking to some of the people who bought one of the new properties, the standard of build showed a certain focus on cheap materials and units.
I just looked at my video where I was walking past them from 15:34 full-screen, but I don't know enough about building and materials to see any obvious faults, e.g. joining materials in a way that's likely not to last. What has always struck me is that the style is somehow non-English. I'm tempted to say they'd be more at home in Holland or Germany, but that's only an impression.
Your tour of Park Town (3:23ff) brought back happy memories of visiting Number 24 in the late 1950s and again in the 1970s, then the home of Dr. Hermann (Hugh) Blaschko, who was a professor and researcher in the University Pharmacology Department. A Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, Blaschko came to Oxford in 1944 and remained there until his death in 1993. His wife, Mary, taught English just around the corner at the Dragon School. My wife, Mabel, worked as a lab tech for Blaschko from 1952 to 1954, and we stayed in touch with the couple for many years. Park Town was always considered to be "posh" and I see that the current estimated price for Number 24 is 2,364,000 pounds. No wonder they tell non-residents to stay out of their mini park within a Park Town!
Oxford is blighted by the traffic that parks in the centre or drives through it, and the signs telling drivers how to do either.
Yep. The signs are a very good point. I'd not thought about those. Thinking back when I've been previewing recent videos, there also seem to be more double-decker buses.
Havoc with buses today, Orkey Island bus stop.
I can imagine. Let me guess: construction traffic and barriers from Keir doing the station; the same from Thames Water on the river; then from whoever is rebuilding or replacing the house next to No. 1 in North Street; and very possibly even more construction to reinforce the embankment up the other end of North Street. Perhaps also lorries going to and from the works on the other side of the river. Poor bus users 😢😢😢.
Dead Week, aka ‘Twixtmas’.
Not come across that one. Thanks!
Glad Al Shami restaurant is still exist) used to be my favourite while living in Oxford.
I've got a friend who always stays in their hotel when visiting Oxford.
That would me my video request.
It was indeed. I didn't know whether I should mention your ID.
You could have mentioned me with this @.
I know, but some people don't even like having their channel named. Anyway, I have now!
Fascinating video, thank you. I lived with my family at number 58, from 1958-59. I can't say I remember too much about it, as I was a baby at the time. In fact my first memory is the removal van arriving on the day we moved out.
When we still had thick fogs on a regular basis, I loved the centre of Oxford at about 3 am mid-week. No people, no traffic.
Used to enjoy getting big slap up breakfasts at the St Giles Cafe, sad to see that it's closed.
St.Giles' cafe was an institution. The breakfasts were legendary.
I just go with ‘golden hour’ and ‘blue hour’, for practical purposes.
Britt Allcroft the creator of Thomas & Friends has sadly passed away at the age of 81 on 27th December 2024.

24:40 Oxford High Street has been called ‘the most beautiful high street in the World’. Highly debatable, and for me, it’s blighted by far too much signage and traffic - especially the buses.
9:00 We have similar in Austria, called Schwedenbomben. A bit sweet and sickly for my taste, but not as fancy as the German equivalent-looking item. The structure looks identical. Austria also has a tradition of a variety all-butter Xmas cookies. Almost always handmade, even if bought in a supermarket. I’m a sucker for those not coated or dipped in chocolate. One particular variety of festive cookie that I loath, however, is ‘Lebkuchen’ - gingerbread with Lebkuchen spice (originally, ground and baked deer antler (Hirschhornsalz)). These days, they just use E503, or ammonium carbonate. It’s like eating gingerbread mildly laced with smelling salts, of which ammonium carbonate is a constituent.
One day, there will be no scaffolding in the centre of Oxford. One day, soon perhaps?
Oxford's my favourite city so appreciate all your videos. Keep them coming!
It was just nearby but I never saw it)) Glad to find out after 25 years😀
😀 So nice to have a walking with you, first, from the lovely Shark. I used to wake up to it every morning while studying at Oxford Brookes. You can imagine how happy I was to walk along to it once again after 25 years! There are new caffe added in New High Street as I could have noticed. This walking was enjoyable to watch on the first day of 2025. Even that it was made 5 months ago. Thank you for brining up good memories.
Lots of new cafes added. I wonder what you had back in 2000? Actually, I think there were some good independent cafes then. One that I used quite a bit was on the corner of Osler Road and London Road. Glad you enjoyed it, and you got the maximum sun -- June 21st.
@@WalkingOxfordat that time there were no caffès nearby. But at night there was the best ever doner kebab food truck opposite to New High Street. Next street had Indian cuisine restaurant. Mostly favourite restaurants and pubs were concentrated in city centre back to Millennium. Good memories though.

And to you too!
What a hideous, cold, dull, characterless place imo.Nothing like the light and welcoming Westgate I grew up with.
It sounds as though it's the first time you've seen the new Westgate? The passage from Bonn Square where I entered isn't too bad, but there's something ungainly about the ceiling at 2:35, when we get to the path to Sainsburys.
Westgate will always be my 1st favourite place ever!
Better than it was before, do you think? I miss shops like Poundland and The Works.

25:45 That strange “I don’t know what they are” is a deep sea platform escape pod / lifeboat. They have a shelf life, as do the platforms themselves and they tend to get recycled into the public domain, being made from composite materials, so difficult to recycle. I feel we’ll see more of them over time. Whether they will all remain DayGlo orange remains to be seen.
9:37 “Boathouse on the right” is Merton & Worcester Boat House. That to the left is New College & St Antony’s. To the right is Magdalen College and finally, Christ Church Boathouse, the last two colleges being so rolling in cash that they can afford their own boathouses.
Fun fact about me is that I’m from the United Kingdom.
So not from Sodor then?
when I was a student Lived on Chiswell street and Weirs lane -had friends on Canning Crescent - it was ironically - a better part of that area -They have said the bridge is week - and -only certain weights can go over it - recently - Probably another reason to close all the roads in Oxford lol
2:13 I can’t fully recall what was on the site of the new residential property, but it could have been fairly old terraced property. The retail park is the John Allen Centre Retail Park. Prior to that, it was the site of Grove Cranes. Before then it was owned by John Allen & Sons, which was earlier called the Oxfordshire Steam Ploughing Company. If you go back to the preserved remnant gable end of the original building on the corner, which you walked past, I believe it commemorates the Steam Ploughing Company (but, as always, don’t quote me on that).
