    I been to Russia 2 times. For the first time in 2015, for the second time in 2017. I really liked this country. Beautiful, clean and big. Low prices, a lot of beautiful places. I love Moscow and St. Petersburg. I can't wait to go again. Regards from Spain.

      Clean and big. Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course. I'll have you know that the only reason those two cities are so shiny and pretty is because one of them is the capital (which sucks the life out of the rest of the country) and the other used to be one for two centuries. Come to somewhere beyond Ural next time, like Omsk - see what most of Russia really looks like.

    That food tour lady reminded me of my Russian friend in grad school. She would laugh while telling me a joke which somehow got lost in translation while I'm waiting for the punchline. Loved when she taught me Russian words but always corrects my pronunciation. Miss her. The first time I ate borscht was at her apt.

      LOL! My wife took Russian in high school and then college as well and she tells me stories of her Russian teacher, Mrs Gavchenko all the time. We even drove past her "Russian trinkets" store one time. She made every student in class get a Russian name, which was very different than their American name, even if the name was used commonly in both countries. My wife's name is Christina, which is a very common name in Russia, but no... she had to change it, so it became Ksenya.
      I was actually born in Russia and I'm fluent in it, but studied Italian and French in school. My wife is Sicilian by ethnicity, but studied Russian. It was a match made in irony!

      @@brunetka_361 it's how they write it in English. I have no idea why. To be honest, it can be better (and easier) written as "borsh". Sometimes I just tell people it's beet soup, but most people don't really like beets. That said, most people end up liking my borsh.

      Lots of food (most of it) in Russia isn't organic. Even private residents often provide feed to their animals without knowing where the feed comes from or what's in it. That said, like anywhere else, the big companies are almost always all chemicals and the private, small farmers are the most natural.

Otherwise, they will not receive permission for production. All products are certified , do not contain GMO and preservatives.Therefore, the taste of Russian meat is completely different from the meat produced in the West. All foreigners confirm this.

      OLEG BAUER You are the one who’s lying here. All livestock food everywhere is natural and has no preservatives. That’s all over the world. What’s different is the actual food that’s given. For example, cows can be given just grass, or a mix of grass, corn, and oats, etc. Individual cattle owners will often allow their cows to just eat grass and hay in the winter, but commercial farms in Russia mostly use feed corn, oats and other grains because they’re cheaper and don’t require massive amounts of land. It’s the same in most northern countries like US and Canada. You have been brainwashed by grandpa Putin and his Channel 1. Oh an ZERO foreigners confirm that. If you have any testimony, link it here. I know for a fact that Irish, Finnish, Japanese and Scottish beef tastes better and is cleaner than ANYTHING in Russia. They only feed cattle grass.

      10:43 The idea of self-service canteens room was borrowed from you - the Americans. Anastas Mikoyan - the Soviet minister saw such canteens in the US, and introduced the idea of such one in the USSR. In Ilf and Petrov's book "One-story America" they described such kind of canteens in the USA.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilf_and_Petrov
      They saw such canteens during a trip to the USA in the 30's, I do not know why now such kind of canteens are Soviet style.

    • @jeffknox9085
      @jeffknox9085 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aleksandr Sokolov, I believe that such canteens are now called "The Soviet style", because they were the staple of the dining in the Soviet Union. Unlike Americans, who have lots and lots of options when it comes to eating out, the Soviet people ate mostly in canteens: at work, at railway stations, in some sanatoriums, on every street... Who can forget the word "Pelmennaya" on every corner! So, I might be wrong, but the Soviet style dining is heavily associated with canteens.

    I usually always get the feelings from your blogs that I would go to bed hungry every night if I ate like you, because often you split a dish, order only a side dish, have a very small portion of something etc. Like a little cup of instant noodles or instant mash potatoes as a whole dinner or lunch. I know its also sometimes the dishes in some countries who are very small but not always. THIS time though, I was done way before you. Hearty, well made, good Russian dishes can be heavy and esp the classics and although it seems like you were brought to some of the touristy and "pop industrial" places, you did get a good impression of some great Russian cuisine (who are even better in authentic original real Russian restaurants and serving places).

    We asked at the hotel if a nearby Russian restaurant was any good. She said she had no idea as Russians do not go out to eat things like borscht or stroganoff as they are everyday staples that families eat at home.
    But when we had these dishes at a restaurant they were absolutely wonderful, comfort food.

    What a great video! Really though, you just barely scratched the surface of the food culture of Russia and the former Soviet Union. I had a good laugh watching Kara get introduced to "salo," the smoked cured thinly-sliced fat which is very Ukrainian, and interestingly wrapped around garlic shoots as an appetizer. I've never seen it as a spread, though - far more exotic than the plain slice I tried on black bread. It's true about Georgian cuisine - typical Russian food is not spicy, but the food in the Caucasus region makes up for that! "Lobio" (mashed kidney beans with cilantro, garlic and ground walnuts) is a favorite appetizer of mine. I love all foods, and have a copy of Please to the Table by Anya von Bremzen, which contains over 400 recipes from the former Soviet republics. Just Saturday I made Armenian "Skhtorats," which are zesty fried eggplant slices, to take to a block party in my neighborhood. They were a big hit, with lots of garlic, cilantro and red wine vinegar for flavor. By the way, although it's served everywhere, "Borsch" is a Ukrainian dish. "Shchi" (cabbage soup) is more typically Russian. It would have been fun to see the inside of the "stolovaya" in GUM, which I'm sure is a far cry from the immediate post-Soviet era ones I went to when I lived in St. Petersburg from 1992 to 1996. The food was palatable and cheap, but the cafeterias were pretty dirty. Lots of fun to watch this!

      Somebody who was born in Ukraine can have Russian nationality, if his/her parents were Russians. Somebody born in Russia can have Ukrainian, Armenian, Georgian nationality.

      @@raytracer5726 it has nothing to do with being post-USSR. It's how it was considered during the communist days as well. • @raytracer5726
      @raytracer5726 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@georgelurye6274of course it was inherited from USSR (and from Russian empire before that), hence why I said post-USSR. Last time I checked, USSR does't exist anymore.
      As someone who was born in USSR, and half of my family being Ukrainians, I can confirm the ''2nd tier citizen'' is complete nonsense.
      All citizens, from any republic, had the same rights. This myth is easily debunked, when you look at nationalities of high ranking officials in USSR for example.
      Heck, even Stalin wasn't a Russian. What made others second tier exactly?
      Funny thing is, a lot of post-USSR countries are banning Russian language from schools, just so they can show they are independent now. But in reality, a lot of people from these countries still migrate to Russia in search for jobs or better life, but now that they are not taught Russian and not a part of any union, they are 3rd tier non-even-citizens indeed.
      Yes, a lot of people are not considered Russian (by ethnicity), because Russia is multi-ethnic country. They are all considered Russian citizens though.
      Russians have different understanding of ethnicity/citizenship. For all intents and purposes, if your native language is Russian you will be considered Russian, regardless of what is written in your passport.

      @@What___ever yes, this video showed that the best food in Russia is not Russian food :) All tourists try Georgian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Asian food, and no one eats Russian.

    Unfortunately I haven't been to Russia yet, but Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia and the food is delicious everywhere! While watching this vlog I remembered the amazing khinkali I enjoyed 🤩

    Don't we say "за здоровье"?
    Or is it more in the Eastern side of Russia that we say that?

      Adrian S. Yea, it’s more common in Eastern Europe, like Chelyabinsk.

      We say "ваше здоровье" here in Siberia but "за здоровье" is ok too.

    You could make a playlist of all your food tours...but then you'd have to buy us all lunch...(and I know I'm commenting on something from more than a year ago...) I've had those little paper wrapped chocolates at the end of your tour before, I used to have a Russian coworker and she would put them out in the break room sometimes.
