    About the dog statue - you rub it's nose for luck, especially if you are a student. I studied in the Technical University which is nearby and we always, always rubbed the dog's nose before exams. It's a tradition

      S.M. H. Dummy...by the time you get to it your hands have touched all kinds of filth: doors, knobs, chairs, money, everything public transportation, etc. Those are many reasons most people wash their hands before doing things like: eating, touching face/eyes/mouth, before using the bathroom even to avoid handling toilet paper that is going to touch your genitals, for (:)god’s sake. But you’re white, you probably think you’re automatically clean enough and don’t wash often.

    • @missymh9169
      @missymh9169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Gram Gram - we'll you know what they say about assuming! As for myself, I try to avoid those things you mentioned and if I do ever have to touch anything I know is germ ridden and since I'm in the medical field, good old fashion soap and water will do the trick and works better than sanitizer. Thanks for the tips and the rude reply though! Just the kind of love we need in this world right now. 👍

    You were right to eat it with hands. Using a fork and a knife on a cheburek is like eating pizza with a fork and a knife.

    The most difficult part of traveling in Russia is the language. There are not so many places translated in English. And my advice for travelers: If u cant get something just try to ask young Russian people in English. There are a lot of young people can speak English in Moscow.

    • @Nana-os2mp
      @Nana-os2mp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is more of a problem for budget travelers I think. When I travel with my English friends we go to more expensive places and there they speak really good English and always have an English menu but the place they went to probably rarely has any tourists and so don´t really cater to them that much.

    So my wife and I had been traveling through China when in Luoyang we happened upon a bar with a live band playing rock and roll. It was funny because it was Australian themed with Aussie flags, Fosters beer signs, boomarangs, etc. But the menu was all in Chinese. A very small menu so we assumed it was all beer and drinks. Unable to translate we just pointed to an item on menu, willing to drink whatever the waitress brought us. Ok, we laughed when she brought us two cucumbers. And everyone else at all the other tables were drinking beers, but we had a cucumber each. Delicicious.

I spoke some Russian (studied one year in college) so it was fun to interact with people I met and they were amazed back then that as an "American" from the "USA" that I was actually "nice." Lol! Our governments were not getting along back then for sure. A little hint...when you see PECTOPAH it is a Restaurant. English P=R, C=S, H=N. Enjoy! Thank you sounds like "Spa-si=bo". Hello is not so easy....Zdravstvuyte....good luck with that one.

      You can say "privet" instead of "zdravstvuyte", it is easier to pronounce.
      "Zdravstvuyte" is a more official form, and "privet" is everyday, but no one will blame you for it (:
      P.S.: "Zdravstvuyte" - means a wish for health and long years.
      "Privet" is literally translated from Old Russian as "approaching agreement / friendship" or "intention to reach agreement / friendship". In English, the equivalent is "greeting".

    I stayed at the Hotel Gamma many times and I could see that place from the hotel. What you see in this video is 10% of what Ismailovsky was. It was huge, you could wander the dirt aisles all day and get lost. Anything you could possibly want was for sale there. Kenworth trucks to baby diapers. I shit you not. One guy was selling Honda motorbikes out of the back of a Kamaz dump truck one time. The food was stellar. This video shows you just a tiny fraction of what it was in the 1990s.

    Thank you for the interesting video! I live in this city and love it with all my heart .. And I even envy everyone who comes here for the first time) Moscow is so great and multifaceted - everything in it can be found and rediscovered again and again! My husband and I recently really wanted to change the situation, but we didn't want to go far, so we chose the Royal Zenith Hotel and paid off. The hotel is located in the protected area of Serebryany Bor, surrounded by pine trees and a beautiful view of the river. I was very pleased with the Spa complex on the territory of the hotel - after a working week, what you need. Friendly staff, delicious cuisine - we recommend!

    Awesome video guys...reminds me of the challenges you had in Asia with language. Being in a foreign place really changes you and gives you a greater perspective. That market was so cool! Kara would love to see the spelling of the foods you are eating so I can Google them myself. Wonderful vlog!

    The music they play in the cafe is classic Soviet songs. And it is a tourist restaurant. Try Teremok. They serve classic Russian dishes and they’re cheap.

    This is so great! I've always wanted to go to Russia, super high on my bucket list. Also, great little talk about the language barrier, it's such a real, but exciting thing while traveling! Some of the best food I've had on the road was when I just pointed to stuff! :P

      we learn 3 language in die Schule - deutsch, english und franzosisch - and you can might lucky and somebody will be understand you - its really - but гугл транслэйт в помощь and all will be OK. Но если научиться немного читать и выучить самые простые слова за месяц перед поездкой - то это будет хорошо, потому что только в Москве или Петербурге можно встретить дублирование надписей на английском языке

    Kara and Nate, I like watching your videos. You are always very positive, upbeat and open to new experiences. What strikes me as odd with most Americans is their "genuine" confusion with the Russian alphabet. First of all, you're traveling to a different country that has a different language. Why wouldn't you spend couple hours getting some ideas of how to read and pronounce letters? Secondly Russian alphabet is based on the Greek one which is older than Latin. So if anyone adopted and changed it from the original is the Latin alphabet, not the other way around. For those who don't know the "English" alphabet is actually Latin. Thirdly reading Russian is actually way easier than English: every single letter has one and only sound and there are none, whatsoever, differences based on what letters follow or any combination of letters, unlike English.
    I've never seen any Russian coming to the USA and complaining about the weird English alphabet and why they pronounce C as K sometimes when it's clearly S. Finally the Russian language is the official language of Russia and everybody speaks Russian there, unlike English which isn't an official language in the US.

    At the place where market is located there is also vodka museum. It is small but it has a charm to it. It was the first place I took my friends who haven’t been in Russia. So for them it was very cool.

    As a teacher of Russian as SL/linguist I can tell that you can learn to READ (write and pronounce) in Russian (grammar not included) in just 4 (FOUR!) lessons of 90 minutes. Just 4! Four days - and no struggling with reading menus or train arrival or station names anymore :) (And training exercises/home tasks in between these 4 days, of course ;)
