Having worked through about half of my Indomitus Necrons, this tutorial, more specifically the makeup brush technique, really helped me out. However, this video changed the way I build models now. I tack my minis to a base and then texture the bases. I've been doing it in batches and it has really sped up the overall time needed from start to finish when I'm adding minis to my army. Two extremely handy tips that I use quite often now. Thanks Uncle Atom!
I just saw this recently and decided to risk finally putting paint to plastic, using this as a guide. I gotta say, I had fun - a LOT of fun, painting my first Necron. I'm normally a Deathwatch guy, but I've been having some faction fatigue, so decided to give the Space Undead a shot... glad I did. This was an amazing (and amazingly simple) scheme to use. Can't wait to work up to the bigger guys, ESPECIALLY Senor Skorpekh! and try out the inks and filters...THANK YOU!
I absolutely like this type of video. A great summary of the twitch streams and a good mixture of "how are things done" and especially the "why". Please do more of them.
Great video. After just getting back into the hobby after 20+ years, your tips, tricks, and advice has been very informative and allowed me to jump back in. Looking forward to unboxing these guys tomorrow
How timely! I was thinking of doing pretty much exactly this to batch paint dozens of heavily armoured Mordor orcs and Isengard Uruk-Hai for War if the Ring and you just gave a great proof of concept! Thanks Atom
I used this method to paint up a post apocalyptic cyborg warband for Stargrave and Space Weirdos. Used Robbed Cyborgs from Ramshackle Games. They turned out great. Really made them look the part of grungy, warn, and ill maintained machines. Their red robs also really popped with the tarnished copperish look.
Just gained another viewer after recently picking up this box getting back into the hobby. really excited for these new necrons, havent played a good 12-14 years, really looking forward to painting them. but gonna be using the marines to bring it all back to me first so my painting isnt total garbage.

I came here for the glowing blades, I was not disappointed! They look so good, I can't wait for my necrons to arrive and give it a go! I had been looking forward to the space marines as a veteran space marine hoarder but the 'extra' models are now the main event after this video :D So cool, thanks!
3:04 So much this. Priming your terrain is pretty much always a must, especially if you're not just using a texture paint like Astrogranite. Most of my bases are actually dry dirt held on by PVC glue, but it's the primer that makes the dirt stay on so firmly that I can drybrush it really hard without bits of it getting stuck in the brush.
@@jakea3950 Dirt from the backyard, microwaved for a minute, then tossed into a cheap coffee grinder and pulsed until fine. Easy way to make a lot of cheap dirt/soil terrain, depending on how you paint it.
Definitely stealing the techniques you used on the blades for my scheme. Fantastic result, and way easier to wrap my novice head around than the built up transitions and wet blending others have done. Thanks, can Uncle A!
Amazing models and amazing paint job on them !! Love the ideas you had behind the paint on them like the scrapes and the effect for the blades and weapons. Great work and thank you for sharing these ideas, they're very motivational for painters who aren't pros like me 😁
I've become a huge fan of the certain contrast paints over a bright silver base. You can use most of the dark browns over bright silver to create a whole variety of brass, bronze, or just old looking metals.
Listen to uncle atom people, I myself stumbled on him recently but following his advice has improved my paining 10 fold in a very short time. And trust me on the Wet Palette
Having watched some of the Twitch streams, it was very nice to have this break down of the steps. Thanks, Uncle Atom! (sometimes it feels weird calling you that, since I think we're the same age. lol)
Your channel deserves way more exposure, the way you explain things is great, your painting tutorials are awesome and youre an honest amd nice guy! Keep it up! :)
Ahh, Ogre, one of the few games in three different miniature styles. Chits, 3d cardboard and Plastic Miniatures. A classic! Your wardrobe department is pretty good with the throwback gaming references.
My brother "He who hates space" just converted to be a 40K Emperor worshiping neophyte. A timely video for him as Necrons were part of the starter kit. I'm sending him your way Lol!
Well done! I think contrast paints out an airbrush over zenithal, spot highlighting results in fantastic results for army painting. Your quick painting results were much better than any that were previewed on the Warhammer Community site.
This was very helpful. I used blood angels red contrast paint on my swords instead though, made a pretty cool gradient too. Did not think about using white ink and tint it before I saw this, so little effort and very nice result! Thanks Adam!
I've been doing my necrons with the spraying black and then drybrushing silver technique. I picked up an old start collecting box to get some different types of warriors and other models (plus that ship thing is too cool), and I've been testing this technique on them to also prepare for the big box. It makes painting metal soooooo easy! I also love using this technique on swords and on guns. No more 3 layers of nuln oil before a final drybrush to highlight it, just black base, then drybrush with dark silver and maybe some light silver extra highlights. I think I got my warriors and the other gun guys from the start collecting box done like that in just a couple of hours, at which point I could focus on the fun things, like actually painting the details! Thanks for the video!
@@MentoliptusBanko if you mean the tubes in the middle of the biggest guy's gun, yes. That was also given the airbrush treatment and the green around was just overspray again

I'm totally new to this whole painting minis hobby. I've tried my hands at a couple models, but, stuck with some fairly basic techniques. I've watched dozens upon dozens of videos. Whether they were made to teach or simply entertain, I've absorbed quite a bit. And, I think I want to do some unorthodox styles and techniques. It seems certain colors and styles are used quite frequently. But, what if I mixed some silver with a bright yellow and green then proceeded to dry brush a necron warrior with red basing? I dunno, but, these techniques and ideas have given me such a drive to paint more minis! Even if they don't look good, they're still special to me. :)
Getting creative sounds awesome! Maybe do some reading before mucking around with Metallics. It's made differently to other paint. You can actually get coloured metalic paint, would work alot better. Or just apply the metal then blend those colours over it. Enjoy learning, so rewarding when you get a technique down 😁
On the coloured metallics, Vallejo have a line called "mecha" and they definately do a pink and yellow 😉. Vallejo is a joy to work with, highly recommend it as a paint.
I experimented mixing some inks with silver doing some treemen and it worked out great. I mixed a bright green ink with silver and used it on their weapons. I recommend using a really pigment dense acrylic ink so you're not diluting the metallic effect too much when you blend them.
I'm brewing up my first 5 guys in the 'ol head-cannon. I've got the Dw Kill Team marines on the way. A necronesque scheme would be perfect for these dudes. Therefore I've been on a necron painting tutorial binge just for techniques. Nobody steal my idea lol

Vis a Vis push fit, I would trim back the plugs a bit. You want to get the rims of the models to mate so there are no big gaps left that need filling. I found this to be the problem when I took on a project to build a paint a Plague Marines army. The other thing, I have seen a few videos now to get tips on painting skills. Necrons will be my first attempt to use an airbrush and I have an idea in mind for colour schemes but it aint going to be pretty. The final thing. GW have pushed the idea that the Necrons will be showing battle damage and ware and tear. I have an issue with this in as much as these creatures fought epic battles, went to sleep for 60 million years and woke up like yesterday. That combined with reanimation protocols would suggest a logic error in GW approach because relative to 60 million years rust, scratching and damage is an instantaneous thing and I don't think that would last or the Necrons would not last. I mean rust happens visibly in our lifetimes of 70 years. So I don't think Necron systems would reflect this. It's regeneration/reanimation or recycle parts.
