I carry a balisong quite often, it's my favorite type of knife to carry. I think it is the best type, large, slim, easy to operate, quick, strong, and just fun.

A balisong used to be my EDC. Word of warning on that locking latch: If it is in a high traffic pocket, it could snag on what you pull out of that pocket. Next time you put your hand in the pocket you find out the hard way that your knife is open in your pocket.

For brass use Brasso and a little elbow grease it will take it back to the high shine. No need for dremal

Mine would be be Lynn Thompson played by Will Ferrell.

    Hi David,
My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

My EDC is 3, sometimes 4:
~ 'Normal' sized folder (lately Civivi Praxis)
~ Smaller folder, the one I let others use (lately either Kershaw Gadsden or Buck Bantam)
~ Mutitool, on belt (Leatherman Super Tool 300)
~ Ive recently gotten into carrying a fixed blade. Ive been rotating between Esee Candiru, Esee 3, and Ka-Bar Knife Wrench, to see which one Im most comfortable using and carrying, and how I like carrying.
I try to keep it at 3, but sometimes the habit of putting my normal folder in my pocket is stronger than remembering to leave it at home because I have the fixed blade.

I EDC three knives. First is a custom wharncliffe fixed blade that I designed for pocket carry. It was made by Wachtman Knife and Tool
Second is a benchmade SOCP horizontal on my belt at the 11 o'clock position. It's a retention knife for my glock.
Third is a Kershaw lucha, I love carrying and using a bali for utility tasks, and they're fun to play with.

DCA - when are you going to break down and do a full on knife steel video? There would be a lot to go over, but I think you could give very interesting perspectives and insight into some of the most common steels these days, and dive into the premium steel uses as well. Keep up the awesome videos!

Brasso polish from the supermarket is great for knives. It will make your steel shine also. Follow up with a little soap and water to get rid of the powdery residue, then a spot of oil.

You got it spot on with the carrying a SAK with your main blade. I always carry a super tinker jeans fifth pocket along with my blade of choice. Besides the extra utility it provides, there have been many occasions where I used that to cut instead of my pocket knife so as not to freak people out. Just recently, at a birthday party I whipped out the super tinker to cut the strings off the cake boxes and someone actually commented how useful it was to have that.

Personally, I typically carry three knives on me. I have my Bradford Guardian 3 in my purse pretty much at all times. I also usually keep a folder of some kind either in a pocket if I have pockets or in a different spot in the purse. Then, I have a very small scrimshaw multi tool (basically a knock-off Victorinox Classic) that I was gifted when I was a kid which lives on my key ring.

Brasso an 0000 steel wool if its really tarnished. Brass doesnt corrode, but can oxidize with different acids and moisture. Give the buck a good scrub down to get rid of any green buildup. But if its just dull and discolored get a microfiber cloth with brasso or Mothers Aluminum Mag polish. This stuff puts a mirror shine on a anything a good deal faster than brasso.

For me the biggest advantage of a pocket clip is keeping the knife on the vertical position. When loose on the bottom of the pocket, often it slides horizontally and it becomes much more unconfortable to carry. This is why suspension clips changed the game for me regarding SAKs!

My daily carry is 2-3 knives / tools: "Defense" knife that I never draw unless needed (Benchmade Bailout); "EDC" for tasks (Civivi Elementum); Swiss Army Knife Classic SD for sharing with others. I curate my carry to my daily work / life. I mostly use the Elementum or the SAK, and they don't draw too much attention.
Also love the commentary from the knife markers. I hope you get to ask that question to other knife makers!

I edc 2 spyderco knives and a sog power pint multi-tool. Yojimbo2 and Yojumbo. Michael Janich is an advocate of 2 knife carry.
I keep my paracord with my grappling hook I never use. I do have one of those stupid paracord bracelets with a built in whistle and inadequate fire starting bs that I will probably never use as well.
I don't usually edc my spyderfly balisong because I live in CA, and do not ever want to risk having it confiscated by the pd.

TBH the very firstt knife I ever carried as an edc was a combo bladed ballisong/butterfly I bought at a flea market when I was 14, you can't treat it as a fixed blade but everyday tasks they're super EDC'able, fully ambidextrous, 1 hand demployment, long positionable handles make for almost endless grip options and as long as you're holding the non latch hamdle it's almost impossible for it to bite you, same hand of coarse, and after you get used to it and learn a few things you get to look like a total badass evertime you open a letter or cut a string off the hem of your shirt lol

Tarnished brass bolsters as on a Buck 110 should first be briskly brushed with a toothbrush and white (not gel, etc.) toothpaste. The white in white toothpaste is titanium dioxide, which acts like a very mild abrasive, the mildness due to particle shape and size. Abrasives with particles smaller than the wavelengths of light can leave a mirror finish, such as titanium diokide.

Best way sharpen a ceramic knife is to get some diamond lapping film and stick it to a mouse pad. The mouse pad helps because ceramic is so brittle. You would Sharpen the same way you would any other knife on stone, except you will be using the diamond lapping film and a mouse pad instead.

You carry as many tools as it takes to get you and your loved ones home when it's all said and done. It's just that dang simple.

If I could weigh in on the Sabre grind there Dave, my understanding is that if the grind follows the shape of the edge, i.e. the line at the top of the bevel is parallel to the edge then it is a Sabre grind. If a grind or primary bevel runs halfway ish but trails off towards the point in a straight line where the edge itself for example curves up with the "belly" towards the point, that ceases to be a sabre grind. The other distinction is one you pointed out- a sabre grind could indeed be hollow or flat, whereas as the name suggests, a high flat grind will always be flat. Hope this adds some flavor to that conversation.

For brass I prefer using Brasso to remove the oxidation layer if it went to far. Other brand of metal polish like (United Cutlery METAL GLO) will work but most of them are paste like which will easily end up in gaps and movable parts. Unless you can take the whole knife apart, It is a nightmare to try to clean it afterwards.

Im very into bali flipping, but id never consider carrying a bali for as an everyday knife. I carry a Leatherman charge, a para 3 (looking to get an inkosi), and a Svix Gale (bali). But most folding knives are more practical and can do more than balis, better ergonomics is one of the biggest things. (And deeper carry)

What would make a good multi use knife for scouts for use during hiking and campout trips. Thinking about food prep but also though enough for cutting wood for kindling. In addition relative easy to maintain and good safety with a good locking mechanism which wouldn't close accidently with hard use and which is relative easy to unlock with preferably no fingers in the blade path while closing. Hope I didn't limit the knife selection to much with these requirements so feel free to mention any knife you think would make a good all round knife for a scout. As a bonus question, what would you recommend for one of the scout leaders who is looking for a similar good multi use knife but could spend a bit more money. Personally was thinking about the new adamas (full size or mini) from benchmade but not sure if that is too much of a knife.
Really like your videos and hope you can help me with this question.

Funny about when someone asks to use your knife. So my girlfriend knows I carry quality knives on me, I'm not opposed to using them but yesterday she was doing a task that required something pointy so she's asked to use my knife & I quickly cringed! She had the audacity to say are you going to use your knives or they just going to sit in your pocket like decorations! 😆 Because I grabbed a fork to hand to her 🤷🏼‍♂️. It's annoying when someone who doesn't have a knife on them asks to use my blades. I usually say no or hand over my Leatherman sidekick. For me it usually strikes up the conversation on why don't you carry a pocket knife? 🤷🏼‍♂️

As far as how many knives to carry, at least 4. One Leatherman, one clipped into the front pocket for primary hand, traditional in pocket opposite that and a fixed on my hip for me. LoL love that question. Also, I have a question... I'm an industrial painter and am hard on my knives. I use a tanto so that I can use it as a scraper. The tip and tanto front edge get torn up and I am good at sharpening but the edge is getting really thick. What's the best way to thin that edge without messing up my heat treat? Should I thin it every time I sharpen it?

To clarify, food prep isn’t primary task, really just looking for budget folding knife to be able to keep clean without too much fuss.

Three knives is pretty reasonable, I think. Even around the house I have that many - a fixed blade, a main folder, and a SAK.
Paracord lanyards on all of them, of course.

Yeap I carry my two fixed blades on my hip or somewhere close ,and a good sharp Buck bantom in my pocket ,3 is a good ratio . most hunters in NZ carry a couple of knives to deal with different game

I’ve always thought the “eye of the condor” hole was so you can do the lanyard choke up on the blade trick like you showed on the TM Hunt M18

Big blades have holes for hanging. Look at the tools in any butcher shop, for example.

Hey DCA, question for you. Is it better to sharpen a knife frequently, or wait until it starts to rip and tear material before sharpening it?

I would say maintain an edge, instead of resharpening. Chefs often use a hone, which straightens the slightly bent teeth and realigns the edge, to make the edge last vs resharpening often. So I would go with maintain often, and sharpen when that no longer works?

I usually have my knives sharp enough to butcher animals(not quite shaving sharp) ,I can do a few dear ,or sheep just touch up my blade hear and there with a few strooks on a steal , and then just give it a quick stoneing at the end of the day , keep your knives sharp ,dull knives cause accidents in my experience .... but up to you

DCA, looking for your recommendation(s) for a tough knife with a marlin spike. Prefer a locking serrated blade or combo blade. $250ish would be my ceiling.

Hi DCA. Most of the mini fixed blades that seem nice are thick beyond casual usability. Could you recommend a sub $150 slicer with full size handle and ~2'' blade?

I'm anti spiderco, completely based on that shape. I'm sure they are amazing knives. I suppose I'm a little shallow, 🤪

Hi DCA - Could you explain the advantages and shortcomings of some of the more popular blade shapes and grinds? And what situations might call for some of those blade shape and grinds combos? For example - what blade shape/grind is recommended for bushcraft vs. opening boxes and why. Thanks!

Since Andrew Demco and Lynn Thompson have stepped away from Cold Steel, have Cold Steel sales dropped? Has the quality of Cold Steel product changed? Has the reputation and vibe of Cold Steel changed? All the Best!!!

I just replaced my Voyager and the quality is exactly the same as it was when I bought the original years ago. Keith the new guy in charge is actually spending tons of time with Lynn and listening deeply and intently to the Cold Steel community. I truly believe they are in good hands. Check their channel here on TH-cam.

I would have said Kubey Avenger for a sci-fi knife. Definitely for cyberpunk. Only $45 on Amazon.
