    DCA, I enjoy pairing a modern folder primary knife with a traditional as a secondary. This gives me an excuse to carry more knives and lets me "cover more bases". Can you recommend some primary/secondary knife pairings with complementary designs, aesthetic, blade shapes, blade steels, functions, etc.?

    • @Knivess0
      @Knivess0 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like doing a big/small carry. Usually a standard sized folder paired with a fifth pocket sized option, I was using a button lock Elementum and a Sog Cash Card but have since then moved onto carrying a Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 combo, but I'm considering opting for a fixie in the future for the small carry.

    Hi David. I don’t know if the information is available. Could you do a video showing knives officially issued to army/police units? Thanks

    • @SMS2884
      @SMS2884 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Police departments don't issue knives. Certain military units do. I believe currently Ontario knives are the typical issued knives. Basically the kabar style knife just a different company.

      @UnclothedPrimate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are about a dozen knives in the military/federal supply system that I know of. They include the Benchmade AFO auto, Gerber Applegate combat folder, various bayonets, the Air Force and Army aircrew survival knives, and a few Gerber multitools. The bayonet and survival knives are issued by units to persons deemed to need them. Some units may chose to purchase and issue folders, but 90% of the time service members carry what ever knives they can buy at the PX or elsewhere at their own expense.

    • @davei8010
      @davei8010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure official use is wider than that. Police EOD and divers for instance must be issued knives. How about CIA?

    Mr. Anderson, part question/part episode idea: talking about blade steel, can we get a selection of knives that are in your opinion the ideal combination of steel properties and knife specs? Sort of a visual dictionary of what all those steel numbers and letters actually mean. Your big brain knife knowledge never disappoints!

    I love my full size Adamas (The exact model shown in video) as my EDC carry, when I'm not carrying that I usually carry my s35vn QSP Penguin with the marble carbon fiber scales. My Food knife is my customized blackout Opinel No.9 Carbone. The knives I hand to people if they need to make a quick cut are my Spyderco tenacious, Civivi Baklash, and my CRKT Folts Minimalist cleaver. The knife I use the least is the ZT 0450 Sinkevich as it was my first $100+ knife and a gift. Other than that I have an old AK bayonet with bakelite handle that just sits around not doing anything.

    DCA and KC staff,
    Hi folks. I really appreciate the work all of you put into your programs and really look forward to when new episodes come out! Anyways, I picked up a couple of Mora blade blanks and was looking to make a handle for one from a deer antler we found out back, as well as one from some walnut that we had taken down a few years ago. Any tips for finishing these up such as using a bolster/guard vs ferrule or pins vs epoxy? Thanks in advance and I sincerely wish you guys all the luck in the world with your projects going forward.

    I’m from Germany, where we have that weird knife law. So therefore I’m looking for an medium sized edc folder like para 3 or bugout for example. Should have a lock, but two hand opening (!), deep carry pocket clip, price up to 180$ or less.

    Hi David,
    My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
    I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

  • @realbroggo
    @realbroggo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    1) My experience is that many law enforcement agencies don't issue knives. For fixed blades I used a TOPS Mil-Spie 5 & Ontario/Ranger RD6 both solid knives can be used for rescues, forced entries etc. Not interested in anything fancy must be tough & reliable. 2) For tip/soft pruning I use a Delica. For anything larger I use secateurs (or saw) so that I make a straight clean cut. A serrated blade knife would probably work for some hard pruning but may not give a clean cut. Another great FAQ vid.

    Hey DCA,
    I've always been under the impression that a liner lock is a weaker style of lock. But some tactical/ hard use knives use a liner lock. Emerson, Fox, Extrema Ratio, for example. What gives?

    • @TheBudgetguy_K.T
      @TheBudgetguy_K.T 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a weak lock compared to most but most can still hold 100 pounds or more.

    • @senoB
      @senoB 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The worst enemy of liner/frame locks are quick hard impacts. Slow overload testing, while useful data, is rarely how locks have failed for me. Also of course construction and appropriate blade pivot, tang, handle/frame construction will play a part. In most cases modern folders from well-known companies will not fail you except in cases of knife abuse.
      The thicker/robust and tougher (heat treat) the liner lock the better - titanium vs aluminum vs stainless steel and what alloy/grade is used?

    • @megacab
      @megacab 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've wondered the same thing. I've been interested in certain tactical or "hard use" knives, but get turned off from the liner locks. I would like a variety outside of my cold steels...

    I get that a lot with the S.O.G Seal XR flipper , the "persuasion tool" is just "tacticool" & really doesn't serve a purpose. To each their own , personally I appreciate the striking pommel & can see right away the benefits that it provides in self defense / survival situations.

    SOG XR - I have one of the early carbon fiber/CPM-S35VN versions that has the same gaudy "SOG" clip I HATED. I sent an email to SOG and mentioned that many of us hated carrying such a not-subtle pocket clip. They wrote back in 1 day saying they were aware and they sent me - FREE of charge - the new slim pocket clip. One Torx bolt and I had replaced the clip, now I carry my CF SOG XR knife in my regular daily rotation.

    Hey DCA, I am very new to the knife scene but your videos have me on the verge of becoming a collector... thanks! :D
    Just wondering what your recommendations would be for the best fidget friendly/most satisfying action folding knifes would be in say a more budget price range, mid range and at the money no object range. They don't need to be hard working (just used to open boxes and stuff) but having something that feels good to play with is a must! Thinking pretty much anything except a balisong... feel like I would definitely hurt myself with one of those. Cheers!

    Hey DCA What should be my first $200 + folder? My collection is 16 pieces deep currently with most of them in the $50 - $80 range as I tried to determine what types of mechanisms and materials I prefer, which was fruitless because I like them all. That said I prefer knives with more than one opening method as I like having a way to open it slowly should I need to. And I don't want anything too tactical looking. Thanks

    Hey, DCA and crew, great job on the videos! I've got a KniFAQ question. I've recently done some studying on my genealogy and discovered that I had ancestors from Goteborg, Sweden. I think it'd be cool to honor that heritage in my EDC, so I was looking for information on any Swedish knifemakers. I already know about Morakniv, but was wondering if there are any good, folding, EDC knives originating in Sweden. Alternatively, are there other traditional knives manufactured in Sweden and available in the U.S.? Thanks!

      As to whether spring assist counts as an automatic, the answer should be no, but sometimes local laws can complicate the truth. Always check your local regs. Wish I could be more helpful! -DCA

    Hey DCA, I am looking for a smaller sized edc that has some attitude. I’m between the hogue microflip 1 and the benchmade presidio 2 mini. I honestly can’t decide any suggestions. I know you love the factory edge on the hogues but I’m also liking the deep carry pocket clip on the benchmade. I have never had a knife from either company. Help!

    • @knifecenter
      @knifecenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Benchmade will give you a little more blade/capability and I do like the clip better. The Hogue has that sub-3 inch blade and machine-like precision. Which of those descriptions strikes your fancy more? Go with that one :) -DCA

    • @tunguskalumberjack9987
      @tunguskalumberjack9987 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither do I. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a personal preference. I’ve carried both, alternating between them day to day- I think as long as you know by feel which one it is when you put your hand on it, it’s not an issue. I can open mine at the same speed, as long as you’re not looking frame by frame and at hundredths of a second, etc. You can’t tell that stuff without technological devices anyway, so it’s more just to give people something to argue about. As long as you’re comfortable and safe with what you’re carrying, it’s totally a personal preference.

    • @Regolith86
      @Regolith86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tip down requires some additional manipulation to get it open, so it's a bit slower. It's not a huge deal, but if you have a carry rotation of different knives you're generally going to want to standardize on one or the other, and most choose the faster option.

Some people seem to just not understand that you need lethal tools in order to protect yourself. You never know when that tactical knife could save your life (no rhyme intended)

I own one and every time I deploy that monster that SNAP just sounds beastly. also saw a comment about the Spyderco Civilian...with a zip-tie mod on the Spidey hole for quick deploy that thing will DEFINITELY make someone re-think their life decisions. 🤣
    also...Spyderco Resilience. a VERY decent budget workhorse I never see mentioned...on the larger side for EDC but it works, a great bladeshape, and big enough to provide a little "whoa" factor.
