    Got to say, I agree with Seth about tip down on large knives. I have relatively small hands and I find any thumb opening knife over 3.25" works better tip down.

    • @sheltermonkey6065
      @sheltermonkey6065 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tip-up with a full-length handle forces you to scoot your hand along the length of the knife in order to reach the actuation mechanism. Most actuation mechanisms are at the front of the knife. It's not just spyderholes. Deep-carry clips make the issue worse.

    My personal reason for always carrying tip down. A large scar on my index finger from a tip up knife that had popped open slightly in my pocket. Reached in for change at the bottom of my pocket, and pulled out a bloody hand.

    A "safe-to-close" option is a pushbutton. A Civivi Elementum with pushbutton closure is a good knige. I use a Victorinox Ranger 78 which has a pushbutton on the logo, and I love it.

    Thank you so much for answering my questions David! I'm gonna be ordering both of the recommendations asap. I've actually been considering both for a while, and this was the little push I needed. Love the new segment. I really agree with Seth. Tip down has its upsides, and I do have knives that I choose to position the clip tip down. Often times, I just prefer tip up for looks. I don't passionately despise it like so many folks seem to. I never understood that.

    Another plus for tip down carry is. Front shirt pockets. Or a vest carry. Its just easier to deploy than a tip up. If it were in that position. The same reason the CEO has the clip it does. Its basically meant for front pockets on a dress shirt or jackets. Like a pen/fountain pen.

    Oh that last answer inspired a good question! My collection is getting pretty big these daya, and I am struggling to store my knives in a way that still makes it easy for me to locate a particular one when I want it. What are some good, compact and relatively inexpensive storage options for a fixed blade collection. I think I can manage with my folders, but I'm still open to suggestions. I just want to be able to quickly locate a fixed blade without making a mess, and security would be a huge plus as well.

    I would like to add to the tip down reasons. Piggybacking on the first reason that it's nice to have it in the back pocket so the blade is against the seam, sometimes I feel for safety reasons that I NEED to have the blade against the seam. If you've never handled the Kershaw leek, let it be known that it's as sharp as a needle at the tip and nearly as thin as a sheet of paper. Kershaw is so afraid of that blade coming open accidentally when you bump the speedsafe mechanism that they include a lock on the handle to prevent it. That knife is a sexy sexy menace that must be stopped! (by denim)

  • @sheltermonkey6065

    Tip-down is superior in many (most?) situations, especially with full-length handles. Tip-up forces a translational hand movement along the length of the knife to reach the front of the knife in order to be able to deploy the blade, whereas with tip-down, it is a simple rotational movement.

    • @gyffesme
      @gyffesme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah -- tip up allows for easy pull and drop-pop, ice-pick deploy. Even with a blade as long as the folding SOCP, tip up deploy-to-icepick is super smooth.

    • @sheltermonkey6065
      @sheltermonkey6065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gyffesme What is a drop-pop? Make a video demonstrating what you are talking about. (Somehow I don't think you will.)

    • @gyffesme
      @gyffesme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sheltermonkey6065 Correct, I won't.
      The knife comes with two clips: one sort of replicates the ring on the original fixed SOCP. Put that on in place of the straight pocket clip.
      Thumb goes inside the pocket, index finger sits in/against the ring on the pocket clip. Pull straight up and with a slight drop-and-lift of your hand, the blade falls open. Snug the knife into your palm and you're holding a very long knife in an ice-pick grip. Takes moments.

    • @sheltermonkey6065
      @sheltermonkey6065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gyffesme Naturally you won't make a video because you are just trolling nonsense. How does "the blade fall open" when the Axis lock is several inches away from your fingers which are at the other end of the knife?

    • @gyffesme
      @gyffesme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sheltermonkey6065 I can see why you wanted a video: you don't read well. There's this great thing called inertia. It works with gravity to help the blade fall open. That's why tip-up works so well for my preferred deployment to the ice-pick grip.

    Hi David,
    My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
    I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

    I agree with tip down for a large knife in the back pocket. More than once I've had tip knives cut the carp out of me when they jarred open without my knowledge. tis is in addition to being so much faster to deploy the blade in an emergency. For personal defense, this can be hugely important.

You know the ones...drag the blade across a coarse v-shaped medium, and then a fine grit. Are these any good, or should I try again to learn the art of the whetstone or strop method? What is the best? Thank you, David!

I find with this combination it work for me. I rotate my edc every few days. I keep my knives budget friendly for work. I added a coldsteel kudo and kudo light and mini tac to my work edc.

    I love the series of the FAQs. Currently my favorite type of metal is the S35VN steel. I’m looking for one fixed and one folder for the best value, preferably sub $200 each, do you have any recommendations? In addition, blade length is not an issue. GOD bless Texas.

    Hey DCA, Nice work as always but have you heard of the Ruite Fang? I have close to a 100 knives and it is one of my gotos out of all of them. Granted it's a Chinese brand but the weight, feel and the fit and finish are GREAT! I just don't think this knife gets enough play. Thanks and keep up the good work. 👍

    David I have the greatest idea for pocket clips that avoids changing anything. How is it that in such an up to date world there has not been a knife clip that can bend to the other side for Lefties? Great idea! I deserve a knife of my choice! By the way these are Kenton's great ideas!

    David I’ll preface this comment with the fact that I love this channel! I was actually inquiring if you’ve ever heard of/ used/ think about the Pole Craft brand? I’ve been using them (almost) exclusively for my EDC. The only problem I’ve had with any of them was with the automatic (switchblade style) stiletto (the blade seems loose and moves kinda back and forth) but their spring blades and especially their fixed are actually very sturdy, extremely sharp and very budget friendly. Just an inquiry brother 🤙 I’ve got 3 co worker’s who are also serious EDC guy’s and I’ve recommended your channel to them and they dig it. Be well and stay safe out there 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 HAPPY 244th BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!!

    Is there a steel type that lend themselves well to Scandinavian grind? And why is it so difficult to find a scandy folder? I love how easy it is to sharpen a scandy. The quicker and easier it is to sharpen, the more likely I am to do it often enough. Any hints DCA? Cheers from Canada and Taiwan! Thanks for the great videos!

    I appreciated your take on the polished vs toothy question, so I'm curious if you've seen or heard anything on this "Dual Grit" sharpening stuff coming around recently. Not the lower grit secondary bevel stuff, the actual lower grit on one side, high grit/polish on the other... If so, what's your take?

      @@requiscatinpace7392 It works and works very well. Particularly with steels that are not high in vanadium. 154-cpm for instance really shines with a 400-600 grit on one side and a 1200 grit on the other.
      Another thing I have found is in stropping. Sense we are talking about non high vanadium steels, No need for diamond slurry on the strop. Rub the strop down with some Flitz or Simi chrome polish and it will do a fantastic jot. the secret is not to over strop when sung the dual grit system.
      Too much stropping destroys the toothy edge the dual grit system produces. Once the polish is fully dried, ( it only takes a few minutes), with NO pressure on the blade, strop at the same angle the teeth were sharpened in the fist place. Only strop heal to tip. Never strop a toothy edge tip to heal. (Hilt).
      Do not roll the edge b lifting the spine when stropping a toothy edge as this too will destroy the teeth quickly. Place the edge on the strop where the entire surface of the sharpened part of e blade is in contact with the strop.
      With no pressure on the blade, knife weight only, make no more than two passes per side, alternating between sides. Anymore and the toothy edge will be degraded.
      Oddly, I have been testing this same technique with M-390. CV20, and CPM 90v, and although these are high vanadium steel, the polish on the strop is working just as well as diamond paste. Didn't think it would, but is giving stellar performance.
      Side note: This is NOT for a push cutting edge but rather a hard use slicing heal too tip cutting in tough materials. (Works very well in dressing game as well as it will not tend to slide over the material but rather bite into it in a very aggressive manor.
      Be careful. This type of edge is always looking for something to bite, and a cut from this type of edge burns like the dickens. Super glue is your friend. LOL!
      I just finished the blade on a Benchmade 940-1 with a 90V blade purchased from the Knife Center by my Brother. He sent it to me as a gift and I rec'd it last week. Woo-Hoo!!!

To get the "feel" of a Sebenza I bought a Sebenza like knife (Land 912) and LOVED how it cut but wasn't a fan of thumb stud opening. Is there something out there that flips like a Hinderer and slices like a Reeve?
