How To Add Juice Brakes To Early Ford Spindles - It's SUPER Easy!!!

- One of the largest improvements you can make to an Early Ford is installing "juice" or hydraulic brakes. 1939 was the first year of juice brakes so this was a common upgrade for early hot rodders to install on their Model A's and 1932-38 Fords. While there are many ways to go about this swap, Matt shows us how to install Juice brakes onto earlier small pattern spindles. The small pattern spindles can be found on Fords from 1929-36. The small pattern spindles has two issues that prevent this from being a bolt on modification. The bolt pattern is slightly smaller and the center part of the spindle that keeps the backing plate centered is smaller. Matt shows us an old school trick to make the two parts work together and who ever figured it out deserves massive credit!!

WOW ! That video really brought back some memories !
When I was a kid I had not seen a project where someone used the piston ring but While helping another guy doing that conversion I tried an old ring and fond that it worked.
I was not dealing with chrome parts so I did not have that small problem.
But as I will be 72 years old in a week and started playing with hot rods when I was 12 years old hanging around the corner gas station where the older hot rod guys hung out, I can tell you that was the way we did it then !

Hi Matt. I think those spindles may be 1935 as they are cross steer. I did this same job recently and covered it in a video. I opted for filling the backplate with weld and remachining. It came out really well. I think with your chrome backplates the way you went is probably the best option. The chrome parts look great. I also put a dent in the top of the grease shield to make sure the spring wasn't fouling. It doesn't need to be very deep. Mart.

Hi Matt. My friends John and Jamie, There father use to run that type of set up on a 38 Ford Pickup with a 409 and a 34 Ford pickup with a 283 at Island Dragway in Great Meadows. Never once did I hear of any issues. My wife and I are using this set up on our Model A project now. Great videos of front end rebuilds. Long live the I beam axle. Keep it old skool cool. I’m doing this to my 38 Hillman minx except I have to use VW wheel cylinders because my backing plates are much smaller- but the principle is the same. This video has really helped.

I was masochistic and machined my own “piston” ring and collar/spacer to adapt Model A spindles to 53 F-100 bearings and seals. Nothing to purchase on my conversion with good used parts but one needs a lathe and some measuring skills. Agree the non-welding method is saving those killer chromed backing plates.

Years ago, I used truck backing plates to get Bendix brakes instead of the less efficient Lockheed style. You may want to discuss the pros and cons of this approach.

Tuesday morning coffee and ITG! Another good old tech. I have no problem with this method, however sometimes the piston ring (stock model A, if I recall correctly?) is thicker than the backing plate, resulting in a loss of "clamp up". Something to keep an eye out for. Richard and Dennis Lacy at the Early V8 Garage sell a purpose built steel ring for this which is the easy way out for this old dog.

hope they work out with your dropped axle, matt. i'm impressed that old chrome job has held up and will be good enough for a show rod.
they do not do chroming like they used to do leave it out in the rain today and you get rust points coming through that old chrome as long as you wiped it down when it got muck on it it would stay good for many years

Love it. I have 39-48 Ford plates, & also some '39 Lincolns .. to '32 - '34 spindles being slowly polished up. I need original Lincoln drums to polish & chrome .. but I'd imagine 9f you ever found those .. YOU'RE KEEPING THEM !!! 😎

I machined rings .001 undersized on I.D. and heated them for a shrink fit onto the spindle ,I Did alot of Buick Drum conversions back in the day. Today I'm all Disk Brakes I like to STOP after some Spirited Driving
Matt, if you installed the thrust bearings on the bottom would that lower the spindle to add clearance for the steering arms?

Those chrome parts have survived well
Had a couple of Model A's over the years and gathered "juice brake" parts but never kept them long enough to do the conversion. One question continues to surface when I see folks like you replace king pins on the mechanical brake axels. Do you always leave that "cup" at the top of the king pin where the mechanical brake hardware accesses the vertical pin that actuates the mechanical brakes ???

Where do 41 ford Backing plates fall ? You mentioned 42 to 48 and up to 40 , I have a 41 I am putting Disc brakes on so I will have a set of 41 Juice Brakes for My Model A if they will work

just wondering if the friction surface of those drums is plated? if so , your stopping power might be not so good?! you might need to turn the drums just enough to remove the chrome. very informative video, as always!
Chrome doesn't build up very good inside curves unless you use additional electrodes but you would turn a small amount out of the drum just to true the surface.
Just curious if you could put a small tack of weld to hold the piston ring in while assembly?

I would use the chrome drums on the back FINED Buick drums on the front polish the fines

Wow no wonder guys switch to mustang 2 front ends. Thank you for sharing this lost knowledge. My grandfather knew this stuff. Told me how a transmission came out of a model A. Decades later went to apply for a job at a garage. The service technician. Couldn't get the trany out. I had no problem.
They conversion works great the scary part about those breaks though is the drums those 2 part drums or separate ask me how I know going around a mountain road when all of a sudden the waited there and was they riveted together but that's basically the technology type thing that they used sheered off and left me with no right front brake scary

hey matt I know the odds of you seeing this are slim but maybe some other hot rodders might chime in I just bought most of a 1930 chevy sedan that I plan to chop into a two door just wonder if you guys put any wood in your cars when you build them i was told that that would be the most expensive part would be the wood kit do I need it? can I not just build with metal (says a guy that's never welded) anyone with words of wisdom or motivation feel free to comment

"Salt tested" engineering is nearly a lost art! Great vid. That old chrome has really held up well and looks period radical.

Wouldn't it be easier to have ground the "piston ring" end gap just the same way you would do it to insure proper end gap on an engine?
I know what you are saying but, because the chrome plating was so thick on the backing plate the inside dia. of the piston ring would have been too small for the flange on the spindle.
Chrome plating sometimes will build up in thickness rounding a corner.

You will run into the same issues covered in this video. You could use 48-52 F1 spindles, the king pins bore and angle is the same

when you take the backing plate off in a year or so, that ring is most likely broken, no problem because it is captured, but you will need a new ring , so find a new ring before starting that job.
I did the same thing and as you said, upon removal the ring was smashed to bits. I have a backing plate here from a ‘40 that has a steel ring instead of the piston ring. It came off a very old hot rod. Somebody must have been making steel one piece rings because this ring is perfect.

I know this is old school, but I'd rather have a steel machine ring instead.
You already are taking material away from the 4 bolt support flange area.
