Resilience definitely transforms a person. Or maybe the resilience comes after we've been transformed... either way this is a great way to go about cultivating it!!
This is a really cool approach! Instead of going round in circles trying to figure out WHY just... finding something to do that forces you to challenge that fear. It's kind of awesome to think about
It sure does change your life! Wouldn't trade walking through fear and building my courage muscle for anything. I'd love to know what fear you want to walk through.
I've been trying to do everything alone, but maybe that's why I keep failing. Time to reach out for help and find people to support me through facing my fears.
Never thought about how avoiding fears actually makes them worse. Janice really opened my eyes to that. Maybe it's time to stop running and start facing them.
Oh I love what she said around the 10:00 mark about peace and love and freedom being on the other side of our fears. That's such a beautiful and hopeful thing to strive for in terms of dealing with fear
I've always had people around me, helping, encouraging, guiding, and supporting me. It's really hard to stay on this path all alone. I hope you find your people! ❤️
It's totally doable! And the crazy thing is that once you start facing fears, it becomes so liberating that you usually end up doing more than one per year. :D
You are not alone in this! It's a trap for a lot of us. That's why I decided not to attach any meaning to the outcome. Doing "the thing" is all that matters. 🙌
This was exactly what I needed to hear today, the idea of tackling one fear per year seems very doable. Gonna start brainstorming my fear for this year!
For me, personally, I think overcoming fear is about freedom and tied into authenticity. I can't tell you how many times I've compromised what I really wanted to say or do for fear of being judged or disliked.
This talk has me thinking about what fear I want to tackle and how I can use the ACA framework to walk through it this next year. I am inspired and challenged by this message. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences and showing 12 years of examples in action. LOVE this talk!
To get past my fear, I know I have to face it. If I want to unlock the hero inside me, I need to confront the challenges that drain my energy. There are days when I want to give up, but I remind myself to keep going. People might doubt me, and things may seem pointless, but I know I have to push forward.
We all have days where we just want to give up. What separates those who get stuck to those who succeed is just the determination to get back up as many times as it takes. YOU. GOT. THIS.
I absolutely love this talk! Janice shares her heartfelt story as she pushed past fear and created an amazing life for herself. For anyone starting over or struggling, you must listen to this!
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” I know it's a cheesy quote from a cheesy movie but I've always thought this rings true for conquering fear and the message in this talk echoes and expands upon it beautifully.
"What about if you show up in life in a different way?" You have to really want to know the answer and allow yourself to dream beyond your boundaries...
Start with smaller fears if you struggle with severe anxiety. You can also look into seeing a therapist who specializes in Exposure Therapy. Find people to support you and do it along with you. That is so important! Wishing you an exciting, adventurous 'one fear per year' journey. You can do it!!
Totally! I've also found that when we step out of our comfort zone time and time again, it gets a little easier each time. What we focus on expands and grows.
Maybe start by asking yourself in what areas do you feel stuck. What do you avoid? Notice physical sensations like tightness in your chest or queasy stomach. Self-reflection and journaling are helpful to become more aware of fears that may be holding you back in life. Would love to hear what you find!
Wow 344,000 choices a day is wild... I've never thought about that or about how many are just automatic and maybe that needs to be looked at a little more!
Honestly I'm skeptical about "one fear per year" I get that it rhymes and sounds good lol but it seems like it would be kinda slow moving. I know baby steps are important but like what are you doing for the rest of the year?
Living regular life. Lol. The funny thing is that once you start facing fears, you do build momentum so you will likely just keep facing fears as they come up. I just like the one fear per year because it keeps me on track and it makes it not feel so overwhelming. But by all means, walk through lots and lots of fears each year! 🤗
Okay I'm feeling a little called out by the prep without perfection part haha guess that's how you know she's on to something you should pay attention to, right?
I have a real fear of doing risky things with my body like I can remember being 10 and doing abseiling at sports camp and just... freaking out. Like everything in my mind and body froze. Pure terror and now that I'm thinking about it I'm wondering if I'd have the same reaction if I tried doing it now or would I be able to overcome it
Maybe I'm missing the point here... like I get that it's important to conquer your fears but how big are they for some people that it takes a whole year to work towards overcoming it?
Some definitely don't have to take an entire year, but I find that when we break things up into smaller pieces with more time, we tend to be less overwhelmed. Also, when I did the bodybuilding competition and ran the marathon, it took several months of training and prep work to be ready to do the actual "Fear" part.
Is it just me, or does the idea of using fear as a motivator seem a bit counterproductive? I always thought fear was a signal to protect ourselves so hearing that we should just kinda bulldoze through it doesn't really sound right to me. But maybe I'm missing the point?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Feels a little harsh, but I truly appreciate your honesty. Just out of curiosity, what is the one fear you want to walk through in the next year?
@@JaniceBurt Hiya, Janice. Yeah, perhaps I was a bit harsh. It's just a lot of these TedXTalks are repetitive and just don't inspire me at all. It's the TED panel's fault because they upload far too many talks and the same topics are covered again and again. Also, too many motivational speakers. However, when I get some spare time I will listen to your talk fully as you replied to me and I really appreciate that. And, you do appear to be a really nice lady, tbh. Btw, the world is that unstable now that we should all be fearing and taking action. I mean, this Middle-East conflict is way out of control now. We should all have a contingency plan and start to really think about what is on the horizon. All the signs are not good. We could be in the end times and what the Bible refers to as the 'Great Tribulation'. If that's the case then things are gonna really escalate, unfortunately.
@@uaps28 Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I agree with you that there's a lot of repetition out there. Probably not a whole lot that's brand new info in general. I'm passionate about my talk simply because walking through one fear every year has changed me and my life. Since you brought up the Bible, it's crazy how the phrase "Fear not" is mentioned 365 times in there. With that much repetition, one must surmise that it's probably a fairly important commandment. Would love to know your thoughts..
Resilience definitely transforms a person. Or maybe the resilience comes after we've been transformed... either way this is a great way to go about cultivating it!!
I like how she emphasized that the win is in walking through fear, not necessarily in the outcome.
How did the crowd know this was going to be an amazing talk? The applause at the start made me like "Ok Janice, I'm listening!"
I've been trying to do everything alone, but maybe that's why I keep failing. Time to reach out for help and find people to support me through facing my fears.
We are meant to be in a community! Finding your people is a game changer.
Never thought about how avoiding fears actually makes them worse. Janice really opened my eyes to that. Maybe it's time to stop running and start facing them.
Never thought about how facing fears could lead to cool stories. Guess it's time to start building my own fear-conquering anthology!
Yes!!! The coolest of stories and lessons and insights and adventures. It's the best journey EVER!
Oh I love what she said around the 10:00 mark about peace and love and freedom being on the other side of our fears. That's such a beautiful and hopeful thing to strive for in terms of dealing with fear
😭 5:37... Janice we hear you... You creating the life you love gives others permission to do the same.
I really hope so! It's so much better on the other side of fear. Thank you for your sweet comment!
The idea of fear as a catalyst for growth is revolutionary for me. I've always seen it as the enemy, but maybe it's time to make friends with fear.
Make friends and show it who's BOSS. lol
She really nails it around the 7:30 mark, hiding from fear is good in the moment but does nothing to make you feel better long term.
💯💯💯
I can see why finding your people is crucial... I've always tried to face my fears alone, but maybe that's why I keep failing.
I've always had people around me, helping, encouraging, guiding, and supporting me. It's really hard to stay on this path all alone. I hope you find your people! ❤️
the whole "one fear per year" thing sounds way less intimidating than trying to fix my whole life at once. might actually give this a shot.
It's totally doable! And the crazy thing is that once you start facing fears, it becomes so liberating that you usually end up doing more than one per year. :D
The part about preparation without perfectionism is a game-changer for me. I always get caught up in making things perfect and end up doing nothing.

You don't need to go too far through life to know how paralyzing fear can be. Kudos to her for pushing through.
To get past my fear, I know I have to face it. If I want to unlock the hero inside me, I need to confront the challenges that drain my energy. The ACA formula is brilliant in its simplicity. Awareness, Choice, Action - I'm writing this down and sticking it on my fridge!

This talk has me fired up to make some changes. One fear per year doesn't sound so bad and it really stacks up over a lifetime. Let's do this!

I like that it was about proving she was more powerful than her fears. That's a really good way to approach it
Those gears were squashing the life out of me for over 3 decades. It felt so liberating to start fighting back! Thank you for the love!
"What about if you show up in life in a different way?" You have to really want to know the answer and allow yourself to dream beyond your boundaries...
Never thought about fear creating empathy, but it makes sense. We’re all in this scary boat together and it’s a very relatable feeling
Great talk, I truly enjoyed this. Very inspiring message Janice.
The ripple effect idea is powerful. Makes me think about how my personal growth could impact my family, friends, and community.

Love how she used her own TEDx talk as her fear for the year. Talk about practicing what you preach!
So cool and inspirational!!!! Thank you for sharing.
I'm inspired by her transformation... I wonder how she remains so consistent with it, can't be easy to keep this up for 12 years.
Such a beautiful talk Janice. Watching you on stage was magical. One of the most creative TEDx talks I have ever seen
Great talk...
I think she's just made fear my favourite word. "look in it's eyeballs and say bring it!"

Loved the story about her doing stand-up comedy! I have a pretty big fear of judgement so this was super impressive to me
Great work, Janice! Thank you for sharing your light 🙏🏽
Wonder how this approach would work for someone with serious anxiety issues like me.... Might need to start with smaller fears first.

Exposure therapy sounds intense, but those success rates are impressive. Maybe it's time I stop avoiding and start exposing.
Absolutely! The only way out is through. You got this!
Never considered how avoiding fears actually makes them worse. It's like fear compounds interest or something.
Totally! I've also found that when we step out of our comfort zone time and time again, it gets a little easier each time. What we focus on expands and grows.
The concept of making facing fears non-negotiable is both terrifying and liberating. No more excuses, I guess.
Beautiful!
i like this, well spoken.
I've honestly never thought about my fear before... not even what they are let alone WHY I have the fear of them...

Can't wait to hear about the fear that you face this upcoming year!
Wow 344,000 choices a day is wild... I've never thought about that or about how many are just automatic and maybe that needs to be looked at a little more!
It's an average of 34,000 choices in a day! That blew my mind too. 😮 And like you said, so many are unconscious.
Exposure therapy sounds life changing. Is there a way of people doing it for themselves without having to hire an expensive therapist?
Thankyou for inspiring words
So I decided to overcome
2024 fear of rejection
2025 fear of public speaking
2026 fear of swimming
2027...💪
