  • Putting Dupli-Color's Vinyl & Fabric paint to the test on carpet and vinyl. I chose both black carpet and black vinyl in order to see how well this fabric dye actually works.
    I am using 4 different colors for the test, focusing on the red and white dye.

    I use this stuff on WHITE WALL Tires too. Use a blow dryer or heat gun to warm up the rubber or existing WW, then apply White Plastidip as the base coat, let cure then apply the White Vinyl Coats and makes WWs look AWESOME. And the Oils can’t seep through due to the plasti Dip base. Just a helpful tip to all Hot rod or motorcycle enthusiasts.

    I'm an upholsterer, and have used this product numerous times. I use professional dyes such as SEMs and Color Bond. The reason I recommend the Dupli Color brand is because it etches the material you're working with well. It is one of few manufactures that is an acetone dye which allows it to bite into the vinyl surface well. SEMs use to provide it yet have switched to the popular Color Bond method for coverage and build properties.

      I have several expensive kitchen chairs that are wooden but the back and the seats at first I thought were leather ; but , now I'm not sure if they're leather or vinyl ... and usually I can tell the difference .
      I'm hoping to Die the black into a sort of a bronze look if that's possible .
      And if a metallic look is not available then perhaps ... a Chinese red lacquer look .

      John Beer Funny you mentioned house painting. A few years back l wanted to paint a house a lighter color over beige but always liked the idea of a good primer first. A friend of mine said to just paint two coats of the color you want and your done. I asked him wouldn’t it be better to lay down an expensive tinted primer like zinzer first, then paint one or two coats over that? He being in the handyman trade said I guess you could do that. I am putting a trans temp gauge in an Autometer A-pillar pod in my Tahoe. The pod comes in black plastic as molded from the factory. I have a tan interior in the truck. I figured I'd use the Dupli-Color to paint the pod to match the interior trim. So much for thinking that would work. Neither of the Dupli-Color tan or beige was even close. I ended up using a can of Rustoleum that is a newly released color that was close, but not quite, the color of the plastic A-pillar trim. I probably would have been better of going to the hobby shop and getting some modeling paint from Tamiya.

    If you want to change the color of your interior, especially carpet and you're going from a dark to a light color rethink your decision, or put new carpet in and have your seats reupholstered. This stuff is best used to repair an area, or to refresh and enhance the same color. What sane person puts white carpet in a car anyway. The carpet will be crunchy and fabric seats will feel funny. It's a good product used properly. Make sure you clean the area to be sprayed with a vinyl prep and even though this product contains adhesion promoters in it I lay a separate first coating of an adhesion promoter down first.

They look great, BUT after a month of daily use, where the seat had cracks they came back, showing the original underlying color. Regarding the carpet, it starts fading, coming off where there is any rubbing, like where my feet touch the carpet in regular driving, even under the floor mats that surely slightly move. I am wondering if the SEM version, which seems to be a different material, might be more durable.

    clean with a degreaser first, let it dry, then apply the Dupli-Color with 3 light coats. the 4th and 5th coat should be a uniform coverage.

    does it work on plastic or leather? I have a red carpet would black be able to cover it you think ?

    • @MechanicLife
      @MechanicLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure if it works on plastic or leather. With proper preparation I would assume that it would stick though. Maybe try on a scrap piece of leather or plastic first though. I have had less than sufficient coverage with this paint. I think it would cover to about 80%. From my experience with the product you will still be able to detect traces of red in it though. I used black on blue and it covered most of the way...

      Soap + water in a spray bottle shop vac' & some carpet cleaner that's foam ......you can also use foam glass cleaner where ever no stains are you want cleaned still and use a actual soil extraction carpet cleaner in really bad cars them hit it with a light coat of foam glass cleaner and shop vac it!... let dry for 4days then paint!

      Trying to color change the carpet it doesn't work very well, but if you're trying to touch up faded black carpet with the black vinyl and fabric dye and you use either a reducer or a water and spray the dye into a bucket with the water or reducer and use a brush and brush it into the carpet it works quite well to bring back the color.
