Maker’s Mob Black Friday//Cyber Monday: go.themakersmob.com/black-friday-super-sale-neil/?via=neil I was keen to try out the steel box making jig (from my last video) in a project. So I decided to make this cool little cabinet. I may repaint the drawers a different colour but other than that I'm happy with it.
personally I think that contrast is amazing, that being said, you have to live with it, so make it how you want to look, still awesome though :D Cheers
I loved it, the wood is beautiful, looks like it's one of the robust ones that will last for years And the mask with ventilation that you use while in the Miter Saw, where did you get it??, I need one of those
You could use the square metal offcuts as drawer dividers. You could weld two of them in an upside down "T" formation so they can stand inside the drawer.
Maybe it's the Movember 'stash you have going, but in all the years I've been watching your channel this may be my most favorite build. Thank you so much for all the wonderful and informative content you produce.
Neil, if you bend the end of the tape over on itself, it makes a pull tab to remove it. About a half an inch is adequate for the tab. It works on the roll, too, especially on thinner tapes, or those with strong adhesive. We do this at work on duct tape for power washing, and maintenance.
It really is great for dados but it's not so good for box joints. This lets you move over the correct amount to make one dado but to make finger joints you need to keep moving over a certain distance. :)
Super useful thank you! Definitely going to add this to my workshop some day! I think the color looks great and contrasts really well with the stained wood. I really love the quality of the build and just how effortless you make it look. You guys really are doing an incredible thing for the world in general by creating and being a part of the MakersMob. Hopefully you all feel the love and thankfulness from the world for the amazing skills you share❤❤
Great video with wonderful instruction. The use of a flat board to sand the entire set flat right before the bevel gluing was smart. If you change the drawer color, maybe paint them one or two more contrasting colors like red and Robin's egg blue. Then sand them to give them a distressed look. You could sand until you see the right amount of metal with hints of the paint layers as petina. When you get to that perfect look you could clear coat them.
One of the tricks I use to even out the grain before staining is to use a pre-stain conditioner. This works extremely well and would solve your issues here. MinWax Pre-Stain is my weapon of choice. Cheap and a quart goes a long way. Have not had it fail me yet. Always gives a nice even finish.
I think the color choices and drawer pulls really make this a box I would see in a machine shop. Obviously and old school job shop. It's a looker and it will be strong. I enjoy all the techniques you use in your work. I especially like the jig making, hand filing and chiselling. You become quite crafty with the metalworking. Nice to see a project embrace both. Thank you for another great episode.
Very nice! I'm a blacksmith myself and I must say you got these drawers done very well. It shows one doesn't need a lot of fancy tools like a brake for bending. :)
I will say again thanks for making project videos when it seems like most channels are moving away from them because of the low view count. A project video from Pask is always an instant click for me.
Use the cut off corners to make a number of flowers using punches and chisels, decorate the drawers or box with them or make them in a manner so they can function as drawer pulls.
Use the left over scrap to make corner protectors for that box- cut cross hairs out on each square- take out one corner and fold over the corner- brass or copper pin to the wood and its decorative corner protection.
Neil, thank you for this lovely little cabinet. You are such an artist and even making something practical, you make it beautiful. This could be a piece of furniture in the house as well as an organizer in a shop. This was a joy to watch. I also love how you encourage people of every skill level to give things a go. Yer the best.
Glad you liked the cabinet Vickie! I did think about it living in the house but decided it will go in the workshop. I really hope that viewers do get inspired to try some of these projects out for themselves, that's what it's all about. :)
Thanks! I'm going to live with the colour and see if it grows on me. I do plan on making a jig for my flypress to make drawer pulls with a label holder. :)
Some options for all those metal squares left over from cutting the drawers: Cut and bend them into drawer pulls of your own make. (Two triangles welded together into a hollow half-pyramid would be functional, if simplistic.) Build feet for the cabinet's bottom. Build handles for the cabinet's sides.
In South Africa black wattle is terribly invasive and crowds out local flora and depletes watercourses. We try get it out of the ground as soon as we can because it spreads very quickly. This means most of it ends up as firewood, but turning a nuisance into furniture would be great!
Great job on the cabinet. It'll last forever. I like the c color too. Very nice. The little squares you had leftover, if you have enough (64) could be made into a chess board. Make them 2 different colors and track them together at the corners only. .. you might want to put an edge around it but unnecessary. You could make your own cheese pieces from screws and nails, washers and such. Welding some together in differing sizes to represent individual pieces, king, queen, rook, knight, etc. Just an idea.
I was thinking, "oh that wood has a lot of interesting contrasts!" right before you said you don't like the contrasting colors and planned to overdye. 😂 Different tastes means art just keeps growing and developing. Thanks for always sharing your incredible skills and design choices with us!
Thanks very much! The black wattle sapwood is interesting for sure, the thing I'm not so keen on is laminated panels, it just looks a bit odd to me. I do think that I probably should've left it on this piece though, I'd already made up my mind I was going to try the dye before I started. :)
for the metal squares, they would make a really neat "quilted" box top. You could either make it out of metal and wood or do different chemical finishes for different colors of metal squares.
The metal look on the drawers before painting looked soo good together with the wood stain. I would probably have gone with it as it was. Great job with the build. Just beautiful and perfect as always! :)
I have been watching your videos for 4 years, besides have tried many of them with pleasure. l see you are really good at metal shop too. My father was a carpenter and I use his shop to build something in my free times. That’s why l know how much time and money it can take. I wonder how you can manage and where you learnt these all. It would be awesome to watch a video ( maybe a vlog or something like that) about you and the way you make your project.
Thanks Jared! I looked at the bare metal and thought about spraying them with clear satin but I honestly thought they looked a bit messy. I do like bare metal finish too though, just on other projects. :)
I found years ago that any furniture made from Jarrah was left natural, if made in W.A. But if it was being sent over east it was stained. Apparently the East expected Jarrah to have a more uniform colour.
Yeah it's crazy, I've been a furniture maker for 15 years and every piece I've made that has gone east was stained then cleared but in here in Perth it's just been clear coat
My suspicion is it's because don't have native species that have that look and when stained it looks like other hardwoods that most Easterners associate with quality.
That's a beautiful cabinet, thanks for sharing. I have to confess, I was hoping you had a way of making the drawer-pulls with the label holders as I've wanted to build a many-drawer cabinet for a long while but can't find cheap pulls that take labels.
Thank you for another great video, Neil, you've been spoiling us lately :o) I am always amazed how strong wood glue is. Those thin planks glued into large panels and holding. With the off-cuts, maybe if you wait to have another similar batch but of a different steel, you could try your hand in making a simple damascus. Either something decorative, or even functional. I would love to see that.
I was watching to see if you stamped your own drawer pulls as that is an idea I have been toying with for awhile. I was going to suggest the cutoffs would be good for that but then you showed how thick they were and I realized they were too thick. A very nice cabinet, thank you for posting this.

I like the color tbh , looks great
Use the squares for su dividers in the drrawer

Nice work! I'm thinking that a punch to cut out the corner pieces in one action would be a good, simple, easy project.
This is fabulous. Cutting those mitred edges off then re-gluing was a stroke of genius.
You could use the square metal offcuts as drawer dividers. You could weld two of them in an upside down "T" formation so they can stand inside the drawer.

That's awesome Devskal (not the moustache!) thanks very much for staying around! :)
I love the colour! But then again, I'm a sucker for dark wood.
Just because it goes in the shop, doesn't mean it can't look nice. Another great project! Thanks for sharing!
I think your metal drawers technique makes for an easy and great looking finish. That's one idea I'm certainly going to steal.

We do this at work on duct tape for power washing, and maintenance.
-- Just folding over even a corner at the edge of the tape is more than enough to make it easy the next time you use it...

Love that old school design. Turned out really nice. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.
The bronze looks great with the dyed wood.
That little kerf maker tool looks nifty! Much more convenient to set up than a screw-advance box-joint jig.
It really is great for dados but it's not so good for box joints. This lets you move over the correct amount to make one dado but to make finger joints you need to keep moving over a certain distance. :)

The hammerd blue that his welding table would match
Small neodymium magnets can be buried on the inside of the back cover for every drawer to help them stay in place, great job.
The square pcs are good for capping the ends of square tube. Fold the corners up and keep them handy as caltrops for when you run from the coppers 😅

The drawer making hack is unreal. Very clever. Great job!
You are a great craftsman. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from 🇨🇦
@packmakes Thank you
I will say again thanks for making project videos when it seems like most channels are moving away from them because of the low view count. A project video from Pask is always an instant click for me.
i like the muted, dark colors. idea for leftover metal: some kind of pierced candle/lighting shades?
Use the cut off corners to make a number of flowers using punches and chisels, decorate the drawers or box with them or make them in a manner so they can function as drawer pulls.

Cabinet color is great, IMO.

Great looking cabinet. Yes staining and colour choices are always a personal thing. Maybe you could make your own draw pulls with the steel off cuts?
This was going to be my suggestion as well
Thanks! I'm going to live with the colour and see if it grows on me. I do plan on making a jig for my flypress to make drawer pulls with a label holder. :)
Great film. Gorgeous cabinet. The best makers use jigs and clamps. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🐒🤙
Some very helpful hits from this episode like cutting the bevel off the reattached it before finish, nicely done!
Some options for all those metal squares left over from cutting the drawers:
Cut and bend them into drawer pulls of your own make. (Two triangles welded together into a hollow half-pyramid would be functional, if simplistic.)
Build feet for the cabinet's bottom.
Build handles for the cabinet's sides.
I certainly wouldn’t change the colour because I think it looks superb 👍
I love the colors. Reminds me alot of the days when furniture was still made with quality.
Beautiful - and the patience and focus are unreal - not to mention the creativity.
@13:37 is the perfect look of the wood, metal & brass combined!
The corner cut outs can be used for a newbie practice welding cubes.
Wish I had a third of your work space. I miss making things. Nice work Mr P.
Love the kerf maker, have to make one myself!

fascinating build. its always a pleasure watching you skillfully create and fabricate your projects!
Thanks very much Kevin! :)
Beautiful! Just learned a ton of small tweaks from watching this video!
My wife suggested using those corner cut offs to make mini boxes.
Great project. I always enjoy your content!
But then what do you do with the corner cut-offs from the mini boxes? You've just quadrupled them.
@@Kineth1 I had the same thought
Small boxes to go in the drawers or dividers for the drawers.
@@Kineth1 Weld them at the corners. You don't have to make the tiny ones the same as where they came from.
I really love the wood and metal of this project. Really beautiful
Awesome video!!! The camera fall was hilarious, and your pups are adorable!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Your ingenuity and craftsmanship continues to inspire.
Best channel on TH-cam. Period.
I think it looks fantastic with both the dark wood and brighter bronze contrast!
That organizer turned out great Neil! I really like the contrast between the wood and the drawers mate! No need for any changes IMHO. 👍👍
Wow. That kerf jig is such an ingenious idea. Fantastic channel!!! Especially because your metal work is top notch as well as your woodwork.
Thanks very much - glad you're enjoying the videos! :)
That came out amazing. Love the old school vibes this is pushing out. Reminds me of my dads workshop
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it! :)
I get so much joy from your videos

And magnets so that an unfinished game came be hung up out of the way.
Erm, chess boards have 8x8 = 64 squares
@@sowbirasmujo so he only needs 20 more🤷♂️
@@sowbirasmujo oh my. I don't know where my m mind is today.. lol. Of course it's 8x8=64
Thank you for the correction.
Thanks very much Nena - that's an awesome idea! :)
Very nice design!! the dark wood and bare metal looked beautiful
Another great video while drinking my morning coffee! Thanks Pask!
Neil, thank you for this beautiful work and enjoyable video. Also 9:32 best sanding ever 😅✌🏻
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great looking project, love the metal drawers. That drawer jig is ingenious!
Could use those square cut-offs to make a filing cabinet-style name plate/drawer pull. Although the gauge might be a bit heavy to press form. 🤷♂
That was really cool Neil, nice and simple but eloquent in its way, I may build something similar. Great vid man.
That looks great! I have not really graduated past plastic and wood into metal, but the easy bending makes that more tempting...
Great build, color is actually very nice. It's a good combination.

for the metal squares, they would make a really neat "quilted" box top. You could either make it out of metal and wood or do different chemical finishes for different colors of metal squares.
That's a good idea. All I could think of was etched signs for an herb garden or little Vs for keeping wood off the table while painting.
The metal look on the drawers before painting looked soo good together with the wood stain. I would probably have gone with it as it was. Great job with the build. Just beautiful and perfect as always! :)
Great job as always I will try making it soon thanks for another great video
Working smart is never cheating. Also, what would be the North American equivalent of Black Wattle? It's a beautiful wood.
Oooft! Man, Im squarely in the "don't repaint it" group. The wood finish with the beige colour looks fresh af.
Such a vintage look! Excellent!

I like projects that feature more than just woodworking
Time for an accessories video for the SawStop table!
Really nice work - and it somehow inspired me for my ongoing project.
Nice design! I like the dark wood, I’d have gone with a clear coat on the drawers, the dark wood and bare metal kinda looked neat together.
Yes! I loved the look of the bare metal as well!!
Me too👍🏼
Thanks Jared! I looked at the bare metal and thought about spraying them with clear satin but I honestly thought they looked a bit messy. I do like bare metal finish too though, just on other projects. :)
Looks great Neil. Happy for it to live at my place if you have trouble finding a spot for it. Thanks for all the content and inspiration in 2022.
Those squares would make a good souvenir if you did some of your 'cast letter' art on them.
I really like it ! It looks like a good old piece of furniture from a factory. Maybe you could use the square off cuts to forge some damascus steel?
Absolutely gorgeous!

The square blanks makes nice shurikens 😁
Good to see your two little shopmates!!!!
Are they the 'originals'?
sooo great❤️ you are a BIG ARTIST👌
Love your channel. Very practical and down to earth DIY
Another good video thanks! I love how we are all different. I love the contrast of the sap wood colour.
I think it looks awsome with that colour.
What a work of art a beautifull cabinet!
I actually really like the colours there. Sort of a stylish-modern-meets-army-surplus-ammobox vibe, really cool. :D
Excellent work friend Pask. A suggestion, paint the metal parts blue, in the same color as the tables and cabinets in your studio. JOÃO (BRAZIL)
Como siempre un trabajo excelente 👏👏👏👏. Abrazos
as always an excellent job 👏👏👏👏👏 . Hugs
The contrasting colours look spot to me,
I was watching to see if you stamped your own drawer pulls as that is an idea I have been toying with for awhile. I was going to suggest the cutoffs would be good for that but then you showed how thick they were and I realized they were too thick. A very nice cabinet, thank you for posting this.
