This surprised me quite how much work was involved but once I had the idea I had to give it a go. I've also wanted to make more Yosegi for a while and wanted to try a unique pattern that I hadn't seen done before. I knew it was going to be a lot of work and I didn't make things easy for myself but I got there in the end.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Pask has more patience for redundancy than any human I’ve ever seen…. Kudos
All those audiobooks
@@dlserran56Yeah, I need to get some!
I dido that comment to the 100th power! Awesome video Mr Pask. I do have a question though. Which was more tedious. The kumeko inlay on the canoe or these various plane shavings?
He’s the king repetitive operations!!

One of the most important tools in a woodworkers arsenal is patience. I don’t know of any TH-cam woodworker that illustrates that better than you do.
I don't know what it is but these kind if tasks are what I enjoy most. I put an audiobook on and get into it. :)
@@PaskMakes Your patience is very impressive indeed.
You are absolutely insane, my friend! No way I could do all that tiny work. Kudos to you for showing what patience and perseverance looks like. Beautiful shavings!
Thanks Vaughn! I usually tackle this kind of project in my stride but this one seemed a little crazy to me too. :)
1st, that was absolutely gorgeous, Neil. 2nd, your patience is phenomenal. You are a fine example of wait & see. 3rd, when you say 'give it a go' something wonderful is going to happen. It may not always be successful to you, but for us? You bet! You end up producing a wonder that is incredible. You are a joy to watch, you explain your rationale. You use the tools & equipment that many of us have access to then brilliantly show what can be done with expert tools. Thank you for all of your content. Thanks for being here.😊
Thanks very much Vickie and thanks for all your comments and kind words! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
You saying "I have to be careful." cracks me up. When are you ever careless? Amazing patience and care to make something beautiful is what drew me to your channel and keeps me coming back.
One of my favorite maker channels. Genius tier woodworking.
Thanks very much! :)
There are patient people, and there is Pask Makes, it is another level... 😂 incredible work!
I would be in the loony bin, great pay off for so much work.
You're the only other guy I've ever seen with that amount of patience. I worked with a guy for Lockheed and Rolls-Royce at Stennis Space Center as a Turbofan Test Engineer. He could stand for 14 hours straight, installing strain gauges on the jet engine N1 main fan. Wiring them up to a telemetry device in the spinner (nose cone).
When I worked on it, I had to walk away every 15 minutes to give my mind a break.
Outstanding work!
imagine doing this work with manual tools only.... aaaaargh haha. I totally love the result ♥♥ The effort and conviction that went into this project is clearly visible. And when you said you learned a lot of things even though you'll probably never repeat it... Well, famous painters also only have one of each, and I consider your work like this to be art of the same level. Anything you decorate with these shavings should also be treated as such.
I'm not sure It would be possible with hand tools Luke, maybe but would be difficult. Glad you like the shavings. :)
@@PaskMakeswasn't this tequnique developed on hand tools?
Dear Mr Pask, I like your videos and I don't know since when I started to follow you. I really appreciate it, that you leave in the parts with mistakes or the ones some watchers might think are boring. In my perception they are essential to understand how much work and time goes into beautiful things. I hope you can go on as long as you like with your works.
Beyond woodworking,
the art of ..
Patience and delicacy “
You prove on nearly every project that your patience exceeds mine. Thanks for your efforts.
Let’s build another Kayak so you can cover the deck in this pattern! Awesome work mate but I have no idea where you find the time and motivation for protects like this. Amazing though ;-)
Yeah that's a really great idea! Are you going to help? :)
@@PaskMakesI’ll volunteer to help. The education i’d get working with you would be priceless
@@BiggMoEven I would volunteer, but I'm from Brazil. A bit far. 😕
I got exhausted just WATCHING you do all that work. I don’t know what TH-cam pays, but you earned it.
This is genuinely awesome. And the cherry on top is literally the part when you say "I'm not sure what to use it for yet"! 😂
This is where I come when I want to see the kind of thing that I could never dream of making. Fantastic!
Neil, as I have said before, your patience for your beautiful projects is amazing.
Wow! That is a lot of work. You have the patience of a 90 year old Japanese craftsman.
Incredible perseverance and patience for a stunning final effect. Bravo Pask!
Glad you thought it was worth it! :)
I don’t comment much but I have truly enjoyed watching you for over a year now. Your so many talents and your creativity has been inspiring. Your patience is something to be aspired to. You’re confident yet humble which I find refreshing. And, as a US individual, your accent is enchanting 😂. Thank you for all your beautiful and diverse work!!
Thanks very much - glad you're enjoying the videos! :)
Who cares how long it takes if you enjoy doing it. Remarkable results ❤
Truly, the patience of Job!!!
Thanks!!!
You're a more patient man than most Pask, great work as always!
Beautiful! Your projects are so amazing, and watching the process is so amazing! Thanks for sharing!
youre my favorite woodworking channel
Amazing results. This is the ultimate scrap wood challenge!
Wow!
It makes me really appreciate the old masters who did things like this without the power tools.
An unimaginable number of hours of work were devoted to this project.
Wow, this is an amazing project. I so appreciate that you show all the steps and mistakes, so we can try to make things also. I may never make anything this complicated, but odds are I'll use many of the techniques in different projects. A huge thanks to sharing your woodworking with us.
Glad you thought it was useful. I definitely made things difficult for myself but at least I got there in the end. :)
These would make beautiful bookmarks.
75 shavings from one block. That looks to be about one hour of work per shaving then? Your patience with repetitive detail work is just awe inspiring.
That probably isn't too far off even though I did make things much more difficult than they needed to be. Glad you enjoyed it . :)
The patience... Incredible things can be done with it. I can see those as small drawer faces in ANY furniture project such as a machinist tool chest, a writers desk, jewelry box, etc.
Hope all is well and hope your ankle is doing better!
Glad you like it Rob! I'm doing well even though the ankle is only just about right again. Hope you're doing well too mate! :)
Neil, you're crazy! 😬
But exactly the kind I most like! 😂
Really well done!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks very much - Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Wow. Alot of patience required for sure. I'm already an old woodworker. If I was to try this I would likely be dead before finishing.
I didn’t even have the patience to watch you do this. I had to keep forwarding. Your patience is unmatched
You Always seem to take on these “crazy amounts of work”-projects. Well done and thanks for sharing
The patience and attention to detail is amazing Neil.
Beautiful work as always mate
Thanks Ian! :)
When pask says that something was a lot of work, then it really really was a lot of work.
Here's a dumb analogy....I do a lot of cooking, and get recipes from friends all the time. 3 ingredients and only 15 minutes!!! Yeah, you won't starve but probably better off with a bowl of cereal for dinner. You probably get well meaning suggestions for making tables or such. Just 4 legs and a top in only 15 minutes!!! I love that you spend days working on a detail like this. It takes an incredible amount of time, patience and skill and the result is absolutely world class. Thanks for not doing things easy.....I'll check out other channels for "Microwave" woodworking projects! ;-)
Most of your videos are like, applicable projects that make things you can use over and over again.
In this case you’re saying “I know it seems like alot of work”… but here you aren’t making some sort of box or tool. You are making literal art. You are showing the process of making beautiful art.
I don’t think you need to explain yourself haha it’s justified in the beautiful pieces! Art takes time!
Very pretty job. If you look for japanese woodworkers doing these you'll see they use their planner by pulling instead of pushing, i think it help getting a more constant tension on the wood and an easier cut.
Simply liking this video really isn't enough to appreciate the special effort put in to this.
Absolutely unbelievable level of patience!
Pask, you are absolutely insane. But also insanely cool.
Considering how unbelievably patient you are, you should be a teacher from kindergarten to high school.
Thanks very much! Maybe insane but not so sure about cool. :)
Amazing work Neil! If you had a CNC mill you could cut the pattern into the dark wood and a negative of the pattern into the light coloured wood and glue them together.
The idea to come up with that jig to cut the dowels into thirds is pretty impressive
I enjoy his videos more than any other maker on U-Tube. His ability to dream something up. And,then just go for it is quite impressive. I could hang out in his shop and just watch him work. Great stuff!!!
Thanks very much Daniel - glad you're enjoying the videos! :)
Neil sees a problem for a woodworking project and finds a solution in his metal shop. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The patience and determination that you have is absolutely incredible!
There’s a fine line between genius and madness and a finer one between between art and O.C.D.
Mate 😮 you're not normal. I would have been rocking back and forth crying in the workshop corner at the first circular saw cut. This is exquisite discipline.
You know when Neil says its an incredible amount of work, it's beyond us mortal beings!
It still amazes me the lengths you go to but the results speak for themselves.
When I saw the thumbnail two days ago I thought it was a laser wood burned pattern, holy cow this is the opposite of that. Your patience is amazing
Very nice and time intense. I admire your patience, and craftsmanship.
Oh the things you do. Congratulations on having the patience to see it through. I certainly have a much greater appreciation for the effort that goes into this type of veneer.
Oh man.. watching the amount of work just to make the pattern pieces is amazing. The final results really paid off those patience. 👍
Wow. So many processes. Lovely pattern.
Absolutely beautiful, Neil.
Nice work as always! Thanks for the deal on the Dart & plans!
Easily got our thumbs up! That's impressive for how patient, dedicated, and skilled a person must be to go through all of those processes
Just incredible! Amazing work, Neil
The most Pask, of all Pask projects. Amazing work.
When I read "Patience is Recommanded" in the video title, I knew this would be totally insane, in a cool way. Wow! 😲
Those came out awesomely!! I look forward to seeing what you make with them. 👍
You’re some man Neil, between your fantastic work intensive ideas that you see through for our entertainment and presumably your own gratification. To the fact that you like filing, you’re one in a million
Yup! There’s passion there for sure!
Just placed my Dart order. Super excited!
Amazing intricate and delicate work. Pask's patience and persistance really pays off!
Top man Neil. Lovely work. Thank you.
Those are quite cool 👍🏻👍🏻. I do hope the rest of the bath renovation vids are in the works. Really enjoy your property upgrade projects
This is a pathological project. Amazing but definitely the work of a madman.
Wow! The amount of prep work to set up the pattern pieces is INSANE ! I am really impressed
Incredible attention to detail and amazing level of patience Neil. It's always a pleasure watching your videos.
That is absolutely beautiful, Pask. I always love seeing your work, especially your detail work. Top notch.
Very cool to see a round one!
Amazing! Beautiful! Inspiring!
It never stop to amaze me your patience! Simply gorgeous
I do have excellent patience, but your patience is beyond superhuman. Wow, what an excellent result.
That looks like it was so much work. Thank you for taking the time to make it and share a video on it.
I have miles of patience for projects, Pask has LIGHTYEARS!
I'll just say, Incredible, Neil. I'd expect a lifetime achievement award from the Japanese Yosegi Makers Guild! However, Michael Alm (of the patterned plywood) might be taking out a Hit on you. I'm looking forward to seeing a project using this yosegi.
this made me want to cry from just watching this. I can't imagine doing through all those steps.
Stunning result for an enormous amount of work.
Your attention to detail is astounding!
I love the commitment Neil! The time invested is not for the feint of heart! Great results.
These are exactly the types of your videos I really enjoy. You try something you've never done with only an idea in your head about how to do it. Then you work it all out as you go along. That, for me, is some of the most fun to have on projects; trying stuff to see if you can do it. You learn so much that way. Thank you.
Incredible amount of work Neil. Really nice result
This is pure pleasure to watch; thank you for sharing!
The sheer level of blimmin work involved. Holy moly
Great job. I marvel at your ability to conceptualize and make practical jigs.
It is the sign of a true artist to spend what anybody else would consider to be an extreme amount of time in order to produce an end result. The time was well spent and the results are amazing.
Wow that’s another level. I’m no expert but when I’ve turned wood on the metal lathe, I’ve found that very high rake and relief angles work really well. My logic is getting it closer to chisel geometry.
This is an insane amount of work. Well Done.
Bravo! That’s just an incredible result!
The pattern is beautiful. I admire people with all this patience. For me personally, there's only one thing I hate about woodworking, more than hand sanding, and that is making veneers. Thanks for sharing.
Really good. So much work and precision. It really sets your work apart.
your work is absolutely beautiful and inspiring!
What a WORK! What a patience!
What an insane amount of work. Kudos for your patience! 🙏
Again a whole bunch of clever solutions to create a piece of art.
