Riggs looks like he'd be a great troll-hunting dog! I like the way the base came out on this table, perfect stability is over-rated. Furniture falling on kids builds character. When I was 5 we had a four drawer chest stacked on another four drawer chest. The pulls were perfect little climbing holds, so I thought. I ended up on the ground with one chest on top of me. The 80's were great, man.

We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.

    Gorgeous grain on that table.
Question is how do you deal with smaller pieces that develop a twist, only after they have been custom cut and fit. I resorted gluing and screwing with the T10 finish screws and working it into submission. Working on a budget so dropping more money on extra walnut and hickory really isnt my best option.

    Riggs.
Thoughts about the table: round the corners of the top just a little. The sharp corners just doesn't look that good with a raw edge.
Other thoughts: John's Furniture Repair has a "Shop Dog" that is always an enjoyable addition to her videos. The first few videos after she moved didn't have the dog. I think people asked because she made a point of saying Shop Dog moved with her and showing the dog. People love dogs. So yes, Riggs is most welcome.
Final thought: do you put together your furniture in a way that can be easily repaired in the future? Fixing Furniture channel has a lot of insight on that. I think you make incredible furniture that could last 100 years, but then repairs could be a nightmare.

Riggs would say, “ when drilling in metal on your drill press try moving your clamp to the other side”. It should be better with the torque of the bit. It will push rather than pull. Here’s a true story about FLW. . He designed a house for Curt Johnson of Johnson Wax fame. Mr. Johnson and FLW were quite close.
Anyhow, FLW not only designed the house, but the furniture also. Mr. Johnson’s wife died, and Mr. Johnson remarried. New wife did not like the furniture, and found new furniture she liked. Frank was staying with the Johnsons and noted the new furniture. After everyone went to bed FLW had found the original furniture he designed and put it all back. The next morning, Mrs. Johnson was less-than-impressed, MUCH, MUCH LESS IMPRESSED. FLW asked Mrs. Johnson if she now understood why the house was more complete with his furniture. The much, much, less-than-impressed Mrs. Johnson had FLW put her furniture back, once that was complete, he was removed from the Johnson home. He never was invited back again.

    Riggs.
    1. To my eye the table "legs" look....well....a little "clunky." That's just me, but it's why I always put a taper or a curved taper to legs. But then, I'm very much an amatuer (in spelling too, it seems.)
    2. About glue. I do a quite a bit of wood turning and formerly used Tight bond III. The problem was that in making bowls using glued up pieces to make the blank, eventually at the joints there would be some "creep" after a few weeks. So, these days I use Tight Bond Original which DOES NOT creep.
    Love your videos.

A tip for drilling metal is to start with your smallest drill bit and keep going up in size, drilling the hole bigger each time until you get to the size hole you want.

Tools. What every viewer should know is that if you are going to do this for a living you are going to end up with a minimum tool investment of $450,000 at today’s prices. But if you really have talent and your pieces are already drawing interest in the five figure and higher range….it is well worth it to mortgage the house and build your tools selection. Because of my hyper-aversion to debt I refuse to purchase anything on credit. NOTHING. So it took me over 30 years AFTER I started selling custom designed pieces to buy everything I thought I would ever need. At that, many of my hand tools are from the golden era of woodworking, 1520-1690 AD. These are the tools I love. Big electrics are nice to have but if a thing CAN be done by hand…it should be. But that’s just me…I would never criticize anyone who turns out beautiful pieces like yours…(unless you just flash everything out on the CNC…I have to draw the line at machines that do the work FOR you. As far as glue…I’ve always made my own. I make three different types, flexibilities and strengths of hide glue and have done this all my life. I started making it for a Spanish guitar maker years ago and never stopped.

RIGGS Very nice. For some reason I thought the legs were going to be installed with the beam portion up underneath the table.
Whenever I can, I will build a quick scale model machete, normally out of paint sticks and bamboo skewers, to check stability.

Riggs, I grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, which is where FLW’s home and studio are located, and many of his residential buildings, so I have a calibrated FLW eye. 😀. This looks more MCM to me. It’s not your best design andI really don’t like how unstable it is, but I appreciate your efforts at pushing yourself as a designer. You also have beautiful taste in wood.

Riggs, I like the accent style of the table. I would really like to see you try something along the lines of a multi-colored epoxy table made from multiple wood scraps to see how it comes out. Darker, lighter woods, different grains. (Mosaic style?)
When I mean different colors … I mean DIFFERENT greens, blues, oranges etc... (neon?-- maybe not) The table could be another accent piece or maybe more of a unique practical piece.

  • @viscache1
    @viscache1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Riggs: The table is stunning. The design is perfect. When you sell a $1,000 skill saw….you make it powerful AND accurate! I disagree, Cam, even if you have a powerful router, if you are a finish wood craftsman you NEED a trim router….but more importantly you need the best bits available…bits are NOT the place to save money. A rule of thumb is that each of your bits should cost as much as your router (regardless of the router).

Riiggs rocks !!!! Reminds me of my dog Bubba. He always seems to lay / sit on or in front of anything new that I bring into the house. Great project. Beautiful wood grain. Anyone would be proud to own a table of this beauty and quality. I think I would have gone with four legs though. Stability over looks, That.s just me. P.S. The painter's tape on the bottom of the legs??? Great way to solve the stability problem Personally, it would drive me crazy, just knowing it was there even though you can'i see it. lol. Thanks for the great videos.

I have a question, I just started watching your videos and I'm new to wood working (self-learn TH-cam graduate LOL) in farmhouse builds. A friend passed away and his wife just gave me 10 slabs of walnut with bark (aprox 4" thick and 6' long). I want to build a bench in tribute of him to give back to her. What can I do to make the walnut withstand heat and cold of the outdoors? although not directly in the weather (to place on the porch). Should I try to leave the bark on the edges or remove? Will epoxy withstand the elements? Do you have a video already or could you post a video showing a build like this?

Trim Routers are fairly cheap, though. You can get a less than spectacular one from Harbor Freight, but I got a used Dewalt a couple years ago for less than 100 bucks. I think if you go for a refurbed one you can get a decent name brand -- Dewalt, Makita, or Ryobi -- for a reasonable price. And one thing you can do with it is buy an attachment from Banggood that will make it into a domino maker. Or you can probably check out JSKoubou and he's probably got a hand-made version (e.g., trade time for money)

Riggs, where do you get this wood? Beautiful piece, and amazing piece of furniture. Do you have a good source of wood near southern Ontario? I’m not into woodworking at all, but I really wanted to try some sort of DIY piece of furniture for my house. I love your videos, and I’m impressed how your work got much better throughout the years. I’m not saying anything about your woodworking skills, but your video quality and professionalism.

Hi Riggs (and Cam), I just came across this vid from the past. A very nice 'simplistic' item. One thing I might suggest, for stability, and may not even detract from the overall look, and that would be a BLACK steel plate at the narrow end of the base. It would provide balance, and perhaps some weight, depending upon the thickness/length. Just a thought.

I want to see you make a Cathedral Alms Table (circa 1320-1570). It should not have any hardware and only hide glue (piscine is fine). You should hand make your own glue and lacquer. I make these occasionally and when done right you can sell for a low six figure pay day. It takes about 600 hours.

Riggs. hey...late to the party, but. just came across this vid. Love the table, and base - the heft of it is really nice. Nice trick to help with the stability. I love the walnut, but I think it kinda gets lost against the brown of the sofa (my opinion only). Why can't you use tite-bond III with walnut?

I have NO wood working experience. That being said, something I always thought would be cool would be to take a tree stump and make it into a chair/ throne. Just cut off the bark/ excess, stain it and put a nice cushion on it....make it look like it was growing out of the ground (maybe add to that by leaving/ adding root pieces to the stump). You see I lean more towards the design/ art side than the engineering/ manufacturing side. I've had this idea since I was 15 and would go Dumpster Diving with friends where I would often see people leaving out tree stumps that they had removed. I always lamented that they'd get thrown into the dump and/ or be ruined by the rain. A few years back I found a stall at a "local" Ren Faire of a company that basically does just that- the bed they made was just mindblowing. Some day i'll have the tools for my throne. Until then, i'll live vicariously through your vids.

Riggs… I think it’s a lovely table. Nice to step out and do different things once in a while. One comment: When I was an apprentice, our shop foreman would have kicked my butt if he’d caught me drilling metal on a drill press we used for wood 😅. Ever since then I’ve always tried to have a metal only press, or a special metal only cover. Just a thought… 😊.

Riggs, I’d love to see you do a few projects without any mechanical fastening: no metal, no screws, no dominoes, just quality joinery. I love your designs and you are a most excellent craftsman. Joinery takes time and perhaps is not commercially viable (customers will only pay so much), but for your own furniture???

Riggs. Writing from London uk. I really like the small side table you made after reluctantly splitting that piece you had for years. I wonder if you sometimes put felt or rubber on the bottom so the tables don’t scratch on the floor(?). I really enjoyed woodworking at school. Your products are superb - functional works of art through high end craft and skill. I’m guessing you don’t ship to the UK. I wonder if you could make a ‘Swiss army knife’ table that has multi functions…

Riggs, the modern designs are pretty cool, but have you ever considered something in a more classical style? It would be cool to see a desk or a chest design from the 18th century that benefits from modern technology/techniques... like a best-of-both-worlds piece. Let me know what you think Cam. Thanks for all your great work.

Riggs adds to the look of the table and sofa. The table behind the sofa looks great - the grain and live edges are excellent. The legs work really well in colour and the cantilever end is very stylish. I am retired and do very little woodwork but your channel is addictive. just the right balance between images/commentary and humour.

I love the channel. Would you consider doing a "cover song" so to speak? I mean using your materials (epoxy and wood varieties) but trying to emulate a design of another well known designer/craftsman? For example, this one was FLW inspired. Or would you ever try embellishments (not sure of the right term)... like scroll work or etching or inlay or even carving (leaves acorns heraldry rustic iconography?)

Riggs. How could anyone NOT make it to the end of your videos? The process and results are always interesting! I’m a film buff, so how about making my dream project of french cleat bluray storage of walnut and resin? Dowel (or square peg) secured shelving in a light wood for exterior contrast, as well as for the cleats. Could a dowel or peg be secured through resin and would resin be strong enough to hold 200 lbs on a wall?

Cam I am at a disabled veteran old veteran I am looking to get to get back into my woodworking which I had to give up for a loss of vision.I Still managed to sneak in some power tools, but mostly my cordless Circular sawEven though it's only a 3 and a 1/2 inch. I live in Kelso Washington, And I'm tired of sitting around in my chair watching TV And I need to get my butt up and get active into something I'm loving. My biggest obstacle is that I do not drive anymore. I am thinking about doing some epoxy work And I would love to find a place that I could get quality stock from near me When I do not have access to a truck. So keeping costs down is essential, But I don't want to give up when working altogether. Any information or assistance you can throw my way Would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim Jardin
