    What would you do if you had a sample of aerogel?

      Show it off to everyone. Even if they don't care about it.
      I keep meaning to buy a sample of it, but never get around to it. (You can buy bits of it for not ridiculously much money, but they're like the size of a quarter. I'd want one big enough to do the "blowtorch on one side, ice cube on the other" test.)

      @@heynando you might not want to consult the youtube comment section for information on quantum physics; allow me to show you why:
      neutrinos are subatomic particles so the atoms that comprise the earth are far apart relative to the size of the neutrino.
      p.s. I have no idea what I'm talking about ^ that was a wild guess. dont come to the youtube comments for info on advanced topics or someone like me might answer you!

    During my time doing research in college, one of the Grad students made aerogel in the lab. It didn't come out quite as perfect as the one here (it broke into several pieces because it really is very brittle) but I still got to play with some of those small pieces and it was the best day I ever had in the lab!

      Shary Ce a two woman came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct towards Neil. Nat geo did an investigation and Neil has been cleared of any wrongdoing. That’s why star talk was suspended and Cosmos season 2 has been delayed

    Subtly remarkable thing at 2:06 when Adam holds the incredibly light and brittle aerogel between finger and thumb. The human hand's combination of touch sensors and fine muscle control is amazing!

    People who develope elementary particle detectors have briefly (as of 2000) looked into using aerogel for particle detection. I don't know if the idea went anywhere, but I did get a sample of it. Really cool stuff!

    "Graphene aerogel" is the lightest material on earth, although it's grayish and doesn't have the visual "wow" factor like silica based areogels do IMO.

    I think some 15 ish years ago , I saw this science show on new materials and aerogel was featured. One application they mentioned is using it as a cup, that could keep coffee warm for a week or more. Plus the stuff is made with seaweed as a base. I think I remember it being eatable. Imagine it replacing styrofoam!

    I use to live near JPL (just northeast of Pasadena, CA proper), and visited the facility several times, during their public "open houses". They usually have samples of aerogel available, for the public to play with. Neat stuff !

    I always am so intrigued to watch star talk and all the science topics and creations. I find myself torn between which path I should pursue in school. At almost 30 years old and a Nuclear Welder by trade, I always question whether it's too late to make a career change. I am on my way to finishing my bachelors in science but I struggle to choose a discipline. I love space but I also love wildlife biology. Should I just stay in my lane?

      I say do whatever makes you the happiest. I would get into a field that deals with space. Still plenty to be discovered there.

    My newest winter boots are insulated with Aerogel... They are rated up to at something like -72c
    Salomon Tundra boots...
    It's starting to make it's way into everyday products. Awesome

    Adam + Neil. .. I think everytime this guys are together there's a possibility that Levitation could be discovered.

      It's not healthy stuff, because it's very fine and very brittle it breaks down into very small shards that can irritate skin, eyes and lung tissue.

      There was a show where they actually had GZA and Neil interviewed him, and I saw Chuck first in the presentation, when he started talking I was like "that doesnt sound like GZA im confused", then they switched to the interview with actual GZA and my mind got blown away hahaha

    Fun fact. Aerogel looks blue for the same reason that the sky looks blue: Rayleigh scattering of the shorter-wavelength blue light.
    I wonder what aerogel would look like in different colored light, or if you shined a laser on it.

    I've always wanted a bit of that stuff! I remember a really high-definition picture from looooong ago where they sat a rose on a block of the stuff over a bunsen burner, and the rose was fine. Hardly ever heard about aerogel since then, almost figured it was fake, even!
