- To celebrate this Mother’s Day, Neil deGrasse Tyson is conducting a very special interview with a very, very special guest: his mom, Sunchita “Toni” Feliciano Tyson!
What was Neil like as a child? Toni is here to share her philosophies on childrearing, and, details about her own incredible life. You’ll hear Toni tell her story about growing up in New York City during the 1930s. And, why she calls New York City the “learning laboratory.”
You’ll hear how she went back to school and got her Masters in gerontology, study of the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging. Discover what Neil was like growing up, as Toni recalls Neil's experiments around the house, his extracurriculars and his early visits to the Hayden Planetarium.

Neil, will you please give your mom a big, sloppy, wet kiss from us and thank her for her legacy.
This is lovely; delightful. Happy Mother's Day
I've found that the way he laughs is just like the way his mother does. Pretty resembling.
What a lovely lady 🥰☺️
She is GORGEOUS!
This was filmed 4 years ago if I'm not mistaken. Neil's mom died in November 2023 she was 95. RiP beautiful and wise woman who gave us Neil deGrasse Tyson
Awww 😔 I watched and smiled the whole time thinking of how beautiful she is. How sharp she is. And I just knew that she was still alive and I could totally see her living past 100. I’m sorry that she’s gone but it sounds like she had a great life and was a great mother💞💝🙏🏽
"We didn't have television to remind us we were poor." "Always had an older person in the house and as a result you've always been very kind." "Make sure you [kids] were busy all the time." Man so much wisdom in just a few minutes. Happy Mother's Day.
So true
You forgot the, "focus on what's in front of you, you can't change the past," part
We just moved my granddaughter into NYC apt where she has a new job. Neil's mother reminds me with her wise words" what I think
Of living in NYC... "a learning laboratory" and " Get on with it".
@@tyh4180 This is the best quote from the interview.
Fantastic !
96 and what a memory. She seems younger than that!
What a wonderful tribute to his brilliant and beautiful mother, Sunchita Maria Tyson (née Feliciano; 1928-2023)! 🌟 She was a remarkable gerontologist for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and her Puerto Rican heritage adds an extra layer of richness to her legacy. 💖
💗🙏
This explains so much about Dr. Tyson's brilliance.
How? What does it explain?
Jis fathers dna had Nothing to do with anything huh?
Don't be so rude. It explains why Neil deGrasse Tyson is so charming, and so successful in life.
Mrs.Tyson is also brilliant!
The comment says “so much” not “everything”.
@@abrahamcasanova9901 Silly comment.
I thought Star Talk was amazing. Your Mom is off the charts amazing.
And He's off the Map
Dang...Momma Tyson is a badass. Thank you for sharing her experiences with us.
Neil‘s mother is incredible… It makes me reflect on my own mother who sacrificed her life to raise four children alone.. Happy Mother’s Day.
Wow for her age she's super sharp what a gift her mind is
Your mom was and still is so beautiful
That picture of her as a young woman; stunningly beautiful!
Both his mom and dad, what an absolutely stunning couple!
Unfortunately I just learned in the comments that she has passed away😔 But she was beautiful and amazing! I would have loved to see more conversations between the two of them😊💝
@@TracyAllenVideos She died 6 months ago in November 2023, not 4 years ago
@@discobroccoli198 thanks. I’ve edited my comment to just say that she’s passed away. Because that’s the main thing. I watched the video thinking that she was still alive and then learned that she is not.
90 years young! Amazing Mom! How lucky you are to have her!
96 actually...
Jeez, she should have her own podcast. Mrs. Tyson is a real woman. Neil couldn't be what he is today without the love, support and stability that his parents provided.
Not sure that’s possible, the podcast thing.
@@trackgrad08 It was a joke. I was just highlighting how strong and compelling of a personality she has. That combined with a phenomenal strength of character.
@celestialnubian I think they mean coz she passed away.
I’ve never seen Dr Tyson so vulnerable. You can see the wonder, honor, and love he has for his mother.
Wow. Tyson is black and Puerto Rican but I can never hear his New York accent. His mom is still beautiful and has that accent. God bless them both.
Which accent were you expecting to hear?
@@RaaniJ I expected more of the same accent. I'm not going to cap.
@@pianoarmond Ohh got it
Puerto rico 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Puerto Rico is a nation she has black ancestry you can see it in her complexion and her facial structure. I know most Puerto Ricans (the ones with black ancestry) don’t see themselves as black but in reality they are.
I had presumed Neil was the smartest one in his family---until I met his mom. I want more of her on Startalk!
"Now is the time to do the best you can". Wow, those are some words to live by.
What a mind she has..inspirational
What a handsome couple, Neil's parents! ❤
Best parental reference to your children EVER "byproduct" 😂
But he never realized and she never let him notice. That’s amazing.
😂😂😂😂😂 right!!!
Your mom is a no nonsense realist. And a smart and beautiful lady. You are lucky to have her as your mom. Happy Mother’s Day to her.
"Take care of here and now" - wise lady! Love your mother and of course you..
I still see that little girl in mom’s face today! What a beautiful person. You two are making my day 🥰💗
Amazing Mom. 96? Years young? Amazing
No wonder he is so smart, his mother is so sharp
That's not what you really wanted to say I can actually read in between the lines of what you're trying to say. Let me let you know there are plenty of black physicians and physicists. There's a full-blooded black American woman with a black American accent that's the leader over building certain spaceships. Y'all ain't the only ones with the cognitive mind.
My mother was born in 1925 but is now deceased . Happy Mothers Day to Neil's mom and all those that are still alive who are almost centurion. They have certainly seen History in action.
I love the last part, "Get on with it, take care of the here and now." Great motherly advise, or better yet, Great Advise!
It's the best Advice .
❤
Im stealing it 🥰
She said a mouthful at the end. I decided long ago that I wasn't going to live with regrets, that I would learn from my mistakes and make better decisions going forward. All we have is now.
Your mother is beautiful. I pray I hold on to my looks and my mind as well as she did. I’m 70 now. She’s an inspiration
I could listen to her talk all day. Incredible.
Mom to be proud of !
NOT BY ME
[NOT YELLiNG, JUZT LiKE TYPiNG iN CAPZ]
Mrs. Tyson account of their family history is fascinating. She is beautiful. She fulfilled her dreams. A blessing. I am in awe of her! I can’t believe she is 96.
Beautiful mother! Omg both his parents were gorgeous. Smart lady to stay curious through the eyes of her child even in a tough time, also took care of her own and went back to school. She's perfect nothing left unsaid.
I always admired Neil but now I am in awe of his entire family. His parents were amazing role models for their children. His mom is truly a phenomenal woman! What a great video.
As a mother of two (now grown) fascinating and very different sons, it's great to hear your mom talk about her experiences in encouraging her children to pursue their own passions. I'm 73 now and I've always been grateful to have role models in mothership at every stage of my and my children's lives. I am adding your mom to that list.
We need a full 3 hour episode dedicated to you mother. Incredible.
What a Beautiful Soul and Awesome Mother.
Reminds me so much of my younger upbringing. Daddy was a college professor. My mother stayed at home with us. I was a Brownie, my bros were in the Boy Scouts, etc. We were poor but rich in education and learning about the world. Mother taught us to read before kindergarten. In turn, I did the same for my daughter, she is now on a successful career path.
Your mom is amazing, Neil! 90 years, all mental capacity and wisdom
Mr Tyson, I've always been impressed with your ability to cut through the chaffe to get to the wheat of not only physics/cosmologic problems, but almost any problem. With this interview you've shared your understanding of the importance of your very own personal history and how those experiences, whether in or out of your control, can shape you in such important ways. AND, you've shared your mother (BTW, what an amazingly interesting and insightful woman she is!). She was born about 9 years after my grandmother who did the same for me that your mom did for you. She hauled me all the way uptown to that same museum all summer long, where I memorized every inch of the ORIGINAL Hayden Planetarium (the Orrery hanging from the ceiling in the "Copernican?" theater, the planet's gravity scales that gave me the intense desire to study physics in high school...GO NEWTON!)...and the rest of the museum where I learned of conservtion, evolution, and even Margret Mead's work. All that time spent there shaped my college career (I have degrees in antrhopology, social studies, earth/space science, and special education)...well, none of it would have been possible for me to even conceive if my grandmother didn't do EXACTLY the same for me as your mother did for you. Sir, you truely are blessed to have had her, AND to have her still. Hold on to her as long as you can. And thank you so much for sharing her glimpses into such and amazing past that gave you your amazing future.
96 and bright as a lightbulb.wow!i can see where Neil gets his sharp mind from.hope you had a splendid mothers day mama❤
She is a gem of wisdom, and affability. I'd really like to see Neil record more time with her. This is the most pleasant eight minutes I've had in some time.
Neil is the spitting image of his mother in her younger photos. You can see it in the eyes especially, not to mention the widows peak!
Thanks for sharing this with us, Neil 😁
Happy Mother’s Day ❤
Your mother is a beautiful, fascinating woman. Thank you for sharing her with us. P.S. My mother is going to be 92 on her next birthday.
It was a pleasure to meet your mother. She has a very active mind. I can see how it probably influenced you.
What an amazing person. Happy Mothers Day!
What a wonderful, enlightened family. And what a handsome couple Neil's parents were!
Brought me to tears remembering my mom, who was also born in Puerto Rico, but raised from the age of 4 in "El Barrio"(Spanish Harlem). Native New Yorkers, we are all overcomers. Thanks Neil. By the way, my first visit to THE Planeterium (as your mom, rightly called it) was in 67' at the age of seven.
What an amazing human being your mom is! Happy Mother's Day to her
Best guest speaker yet.
What do you want to be when you grow up ?
"I want to be well adjusted and happy with my life."
What 'Mom' said, and the number 42, is all you need.
She's been through a lot
Being Neils Mom ?
Woah!
She deserves a medal
Dios TE la bendiga 💯 happy mother day to her and your family . 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ Feliz dia de Madre para Ella y TU esposa . Orgullosa Puertorriqueña. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
I wonder if Neil realizes that his gift to naturally share knowledge. His mother short response when he said she had books to learn how to parent. She said the
" HELL WITH THE BOOKS" his upbringing was learned at a N.Y. SHCOOL OF ANYTHING POSSIBLE, GOOD,BAD,AND UGLY.!!! SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS!!! message from a 90+ mother. That raised Neil, find the kids passion, keep them busy and teach manners and respect!!! This is as if not as important as the greatest science learned!!! Thank you for sharing personal life. Greatest mom in the world, only second to mine! 😊🙏🫶✌️
Yeah that was a very Neil answer, I see where he gets it 😏
Fascinating and your mom is very sharp for her age!
She is sharper than most people at any age !!! 😂
I legitimately thought she said "learning lavatory". That's why the good, the bad and the ugly made so much sense.
“Now is the time to do the best you can.” Wise words from an incredible mother. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Your mom reminds me of the many older generation Puerto Rican women in my life. Head strong and inspirational. Makes a way for everyone to get ahead where there is none. Feliz dia de las madres ❤
I want to be like her when I grow up...I am 61 and my Mom is 77! And she has a widow's peak!!!
🤗That is a very wise women. A true treasure! Thank you so much for sharing her with us!!!
She defines the Best of Motherhood !!!
Wow. Your mom is in her 90’s? She looks much younger and vibrant. What a blessing. Go mom!
Wow best line ever, "no regrets and too late anyhow. Just get on with life. Take care the here and now." What an amazing lady especially at her age! ❤
Such a beautiful woman with a beautiful mind. Thank you for sharing Neil with us. Happy Mother’s Day to all.
My dad was born in 1928, too. Happy Mommy Day, momma Tyson.
He's some "by-product'!!! Thank goodness!!
She’s a jewel. Thanks for sharing your Mother with us.
Wow! This is wonderful. My mom is 87 and, although she's still fairly sharp, Neil's mom is incredibly quick witted and speaks without hesitation. What a blessing. ❤
What an awesome treat, Neil! Thank you. So wonderful to get a glimpse of you in such a personal way. Happy Mother's Day to your Mom.
The best video you have ever made Neil.. my wife is also Puerto Rican we have 2.. boricua!! Kid's.. oh thanks for sharing we all love you
Beautiful Puerto Rican mother. God Bless.
My mom was born in 1928, born and raised in Puerto Rico. We lived in NYC for about 6 years and then we went back. They never wanted to change their name.
You are soooo blessed Neil !! Boricua por siempre💃
Yay Mom! God bless her!
Neil's mom is so cool!!! What a Dame...
This conversation made me tear up and chuckle a bit. Take care of the here and now. Wise woman who raised wise children. Bravo!
My condolences on the passing of Neil Tyson’s Mother ...a very sensible wise lady …loved the interview! ~Namaste 🙏🏻
Wonderful Interview.
I've been doing Audio Recording interviews with my Mom.
These things are SO important to do, cus when our folks are gone......they're gone.
Ask your parents questions, find out your history & lineage, etc as much as you can.
May Mama Tyson Rest well
🙏💞
This was so inspiring Dr. Tyson, thank you for sharing 🤗😀
ALL I can say is WOW!!!! You Mom is AMAZING, INCREDIBLY BRILLIANT.....and it still feels like those words don't do her justice....I see exactly why you are as brilliant as you are!!!!!
I'll have what she's having. Thanks for sharing your story, Doña Toni. 🙂
Absolutely!❤
She is extremely sharp for 90yrs old. And she has a good sense of humor. May God grace me to age this well. Neil has brilliant parents.
What an amazing woman! Easy to see how Neil became the amazing scientist and communicator he is today.
Happy mother's day
I respect mother's and women alot
So Good. Thanks Neil. Thanks Neil's Mom.

That was amazing, Neil! Your mom is an extraordinary person. May she be blessed with good health and joy!
APPRECIATE and Be KIND to our Seniors
What an exceptionally wonderful mother she is.
I'm surprised that Neil's mom is older than my mom (my mom passed few years ago) and she's sitting and talking in perfect sense! Wow mom! Happy mother's day❤🌹🌿💐.
My grandparents are from Arecibo. Can't believe Neil is also Boricua 🇵🇷
Love you. Growing up I used to tell my dad. "Daddy daddy when I'm big I'm going to marry Neil de GrassTyson. Well done mom for raising a great son
Wonderful mom. Sweet and no nonsense, she taught her kids well.
I love your mother. She reminds me of my grandmother. She passed at 94, but her mind was just fine. I could hear my grandmother saying that last sentence of having no regrets, just with a couple of her special words placed in for good measure😅.
7:32
"... So people who relive their lives and say I should have done this I should have this I may have... come on please, just get on with it. Take care of the here and now, just do the best you can now. Now is the time to do the best you can."

I just loved her story. Please bring her on the show again...she has beauty, brains and wisdom.
Oh, this interview was far too short. So many thanks to your Mum for this wonderful interview. A fascinating dear lady. Happy Mother’s Day to her and to all the other amazing Mum’s, who have supported and helped mould the lives of their children
