Puerto Rico is a nation she has black ancestry you can see it in her complexion and her facial structure. I know most Puerto Ricans (the ones with black ancestry) don’t see themselves as black but in reality they are.
This is true, African ancestry is very much prevalent in the Spanish Caribbean and sadly it's also common for us to not always acknowledge that. With that said, many of us consider ourselves to be a mixture and see race differently than how it's viewed in the US (this isn't to say racism doesn't exist here, it still very much does). Which is okay, every country has unique histories and demographics, contributing to their individual stances on things like race. African is a crucial part of us and our history, and so is Spanish and to a smaller extent Indigenous. For the most part, many of us see ourselves as all three. @@filaphill

Mrs. Tyson account of their family history is fascinating. She is beautiful. She fulfilled her dreams. A blessing. I am in awe of her! I can’t believe she is 96.
That's not what you really wanted to say I can actually read in between the lines of what you're trying to say. Let me let you know there are plenty of black physicians and physicists. There's a full-blooded black American woman with a black American accent that's the leader over building certain spaceships. Y'all ain't the only ones with the cognitive mind.
Reminds me so much of my younger upbringing. Daddy was a college professor. My mother stayed at home with us. I was a Brownie, my bros were in the Boy Scouts, etc. We were poor but rich in education and learning about the world. Mother taught us to read before kindergarten. In turn, I did the same for my daughter, she is now on a successful career path.

Mr Tyson, I've always been impressed with your ability to cut through the chaffe to get to the wheat of not only physics/cosmologic problems, but almost any problem. With this interview you've shared your understanding of the importance of your very own personal history and how those experiences, whether in or out of your control, can shape you in such important ways. AND, you've shared your mother (BTW, what an amazingly interesting and insightful woman she is!). She was born about 9 years after my grandmother who did the same for me that your mom did for you. She hauled me all the way uptown to that same museum all summer long, where I memorized every inch of the ORIGINAL Hayden Planetarium (the Orrery hanging from the ceiling in the "Copernican?" theater, the planet's gravity scales that gave me the intense desire to study physics in high school...GO NEWTON!)...and the rest of the museum where I learned of conservtion, evolution, and even Margret Mead's work. All that time spent there shaped my college career (I have degrees in antrhopology, social studies, earth/space science, and special education)...well, none of it would have been possible for me to even conceive if my grandmother didn't do EXACTLY the same for me as your mother did for you. Sir, you truely are blessed to have had her, AND to have her still. Hold on to her as long as you can. And thank you so much for sharing her glimpses into such and amazing past that gave you your amazing future.
Beautiful mother! Omg both his parents were gorgeous. Smart lady to stay curious through the eyes of her child even in a tough time, also took care of her own and went back to school. She's perfect nothing left unsaid.
As a mother of two (now grown) fascinating and very different sons, it's great to hear your mom talk about her experiences in encouraging her children to pursue their own passions. I'm 73 now and I've always been grateful to have role models in mothership at every stage of my and my children's lives. I am adding your mom to that list.
She is a gem of wisdom, and affability. I'd really like to see Neil record more time with her. This is the most pleasant eight minutes I've had in some time.
