    I personally feel so far, 2023 may be a strong contender for the best year. Aside from Everybody 1-2 Switch (which even then, isn’t really as bad as leakers claimed), virtually every new title has been fantastic.
    Tears Of The Kingdom and Pikmin 4 being the obvious big hitters so far. But we also got other worth noting like Fire Emblem Engage and Bayonetta Origins. The remakes and remasters have been solid as well with Kirby Return To Dreamland Deluxe, Metroid Prime Remastered, Advance Wars Reboot Camp, and Pikmin 1 + 2. And I think the next few games that will be coming out soon will be great with Detective Pikachu Returns, Warioware: Shake It, and especially both Super Mario Bros Wonder and Super Mario RPG.
    If 2023 is going to be one the Switch's final years before the next big Nintendo console, it's a near-perfect one to end off on.

    The Switch has had such a consistently strong lineup, probably the most out of any Nintendo consoles, that you could honestly make a case for multiple years being its best. 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and even this year so far had so many amazing games released for the console that they’re all worthy of praise in their own right. And even their weaker years like 2018 and 2020 still several gems to come from them, like Octopath Traveler, Smash Ultimate, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

    - Metroid Prime Remastered
    - Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe
    - Advance Wars 1+2

    this year has already been insane and the fact that there's still so much more to come says a lot about how this year has been going, kirby's return to dreamland deluxe, The legend of zelda tears of the kingdom, pikmin 4 with ports of pikmin's 1 and 2, gameboy, gameboy color, and gameboy advance finally being added, METROID PRIME REMASTERED and that's on top of what's still to come with super mario bros wonder, the final wave of mario kart 8 deluxe's booster course pass, Wario ware move it, and SUPER MARIO RPG REBUILT FROM THE GROUND UP!!! and that's not even mentioning 3rd party games coming out too, this is genuinely one of if not the most stacked years for nintendo releases and that is saying a LOT

    I agree on 2021. It was a great year, definitely my favorite. Specially for both Metroid Dread and NEO Twewy, which are comeback games for 2 of my absolutely favorite series, that I couldn't even hope would end up as amazing as they were. Like those 2 are straight up in my Top 25 games of all time or so. And then you add stuff like Great Ace Attorney, NMH3, Bowser's Fury, Monster Hunter Rise, Eastward or the re-release of Scott Pilgrim's game (FINALLY), and yeah, no year wins against that one for me on the Switch's lifespan

  • @RaeSig
    @RaeSig ปีที่แล้ว +5

    2021 was the one for me too. Just like you guys said, it was a year full of games that felt impossible, sequels and re-releases we thought we'd never get. A sequel to TWEWY?? No fking way. Great Ace Attorney was infamous among Ace Attorney fans for being so out of reach. And Metroid *5*!! *19 years* after Metroid 4! I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my life, and what an amazing Metroid game it turned out to be.

    Honestly I’d call it THE YEAR OF MARIO given how much Mario content we got! Be it more adventures in the galactic world of Mario Rabbids, or new activities out in the real world, it’s been amazing!
    - Lego Mario Sets Wave 6 (Janurary)
    - Super Nintendo World (February)
    - The Tower of Doom (March)
    - Booster Pass Wave 4 (March)
    - The Super Mario Bros Movie (April)
    - The Last Spark Hunter (June)
    - Booster Pass Wave 5 (June)
    - Lego Donkey Kong Sets (August)
    - Rayman in the Phantom Show (August)
    - Super Mario Bros Wonder (October)
    - WarioWare Move It! (November)
    - Super Mario RPG (November)

  • @oscarzxn4067
    @oscarzxn4067 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gotta say, I'm happy to see the 2021 love, I also think is my favorite year of the Switch since as you said, while it didn't have many big heavy hitters, it had so much variety from Switch and so many interesting games, sometimes it's also important to see the mid sized or smaller games, no console's lineup is full without them, and we saw plenty of that from Nintendo and with lots of variety, plus solid third party and indie support with both older games as well as new games like Rise, SMTV, NMH3, Ace Attorney, Bravely Default 2 or Stories 2.
    However I thought I was the only one thinking that because I remember writing this in a forum and everyone said they thought it was a terrible year because it didn't have any heavy hitters like Mario or Zelda, and then also I remember Scott the Woz saying it was an underhwelming year with basically nothing but ports of old games from third parties.

Between good Mario Party with online, Metroid Dread, New Pokemon Snap, Neo:The World Ends With You and both Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2 and Famicom Detective Club being localized, it was a miracle of a year.

      I wasn't expecting such a huge improvement in Octopath 2. I wasn't a big fan of the first one. Gameplay was great, but the characters tended to be hit or miss and saddled with standalone stories that also had the same track record, wrapped up in an endgame plot that came practically out of nowhere to forcefully connect everything. After adoring Bravely Default and Second, it came as a sort of letdown. Octopath 2 took everything good from the first game and improved on it, and did a significantly better job in the story department. Octopath 2 is a game I would whole heartedly recommend to any RPG fan.

    I got the Switch in December 2019 after a long break from gaming, and I've been having a blast and expanding my games catalogue ever since! So far, for me every year has been fantastic, but that's also because I've been trying to catch up in addition to enjoying new games coming out 😂 I've definitely lost track of release dates (also the pandemic years are all blurred together 😬).

    It was a great, wholesome podcast to listen to while preparing my dinners for the freezer to warm up next week. I'm glad to have listened, I got back into the magic of handheld gaming on the bus to work/home like I did with my GBA/DS in middle and high school. The switch is amazing as it's so easy to pick up and play, or dock to my monitor for a console experience. As an adult I told myself gaming sessions are only fun in long periods of time, but I forgot how many of my gaming experiences happened during short gameplay sessions commuting with family, or playing a little before going to school or going to bed. I'm having a blast with Link's Awakening after having beaten Mario Odyssey and Bug Fables.
    I also love how a lot of games offer text options in multiple languages, it's helped me get some practice with Spanish in more fun ways, along with the joy cons being able to hook onto any Bluetooth devices, I've been able to play switch games on the treadmill; or connect them to my tablet to map it to turn pages on button presses to help stay in shape while still enjoying my free time.

I don't think the Switch has ever had a "bad" year in my opinion and I've consistently bought games on the console each year. 2021 might ironically be the weakest year personally, but it had two awesome indie releases in Crys Tales & Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Dread was a stellar game. 2020 felt like a drought (especially since I'm not an Animal Crossing fan) but XC1 DE and Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity carried that year hard.

    Despite how some games runs, the awful Joy Con Drift and other questionable choices that Nintendo has done, I believed the Switch is Nintendo's best home console since the SNES and I guess best handheld system since the DS. It has an great library of games ( both first & third party games ), they have all the variety of genre that u can play, having plenty of good ports, remake or remastered of games and many more. While it has it's up & down, there's still plenty of things that never lost touch and there is more games heading that can lead to good things.

  • @ryanhodgson8676
    @ryanhodgson8676 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the "best year" depends a ton on how many games you play a year. I think in 2017, I played two games on Switch, Zelda and Mario. It was pretty flipping sweet. This year, I finished Xenoblade 3, played through the entirety of Bayonetta 3 and Nier Automata, and now I've been playing Tears of the Kingdom since the day it came out. So TOTK is literally the only game that came out on 2023 I've played. And who knows how many more months or years it will carry me. And I can confidently say, 2023 is the best year for switch, with 2017 being my second place.
    Best games for the rest of the years: Octopath Traveler (2018), Fire Emblem Three Houses (2019), Paper Mario The Origami King (2020), Metroid Dread (2021), Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022). Xenoblade 3 is probably a better game than Kirby, but I played it well into 2023 because it's enormous and it's not gonna dethrone TOTK.

    The weird thing with 2023 being such a strong contender for best year is combining it with the rumors of the switch successor coming next year leaves it with few potential titles to be there for its launch, besides some surprise we wouldnt see coming, its basically just a 3D Mario game that is due for a new title.

    • @Nk3ATR
      @Nk3ATR ปีที่แล้ว

      Mario Kart is also way due for passing the torch to a new entry. If both a new 3D Mario and a new Mario Kart come out on the successor's year 1, that would already be a banger release. And its also basically guaranteed that Metroid Prime 4 will at least be cross gen simultaneous release, so there's that. Who knows what else, Nintendo usually tries to do some new IP when they release a new console too.

    Sonic Forces! 😄 (Crickets Chirping)
    All jokes aside, at least Sonic Mania made that year bearable for Sonic fans and Mania Plus in 2018! I also want to give a shout-out to Team Sonic Racing. Really loved this discussion! The Switch is an amazing console because I would argue there hasn't even been a bad year for it, though I know my tastes are varied than most gamers so there's almost always multiple releases for me in a given year. I especially love the nod towards to 2021 as the best year, which is my personal pick as well for all the reasons Derrick stated, and the only years that come close are 2022 and 2023 (mostly on the back of Metroid Prime Remastered and I guess Tears of the Kingdom). I do think a reason why 2017 is so fondly remembered, that wasn't exactly touched on by the panel, is just how well it hit its stride in terms of consistent monthly releases! The fact that it really felt like every month gave you a quality release from first party Nintendo is why it endears itself to so many people (such so that I would say it was the best year in gaming so far but that's due to both the Switch release and a variety of truly stellar releases on the other platforms)

    I dont think anything has topped 2017 for a few reasons. One is that I don't think anyone anticipated Nintendo to bounce back as hard as they did after how pitiful the Wii U lifecycle had been for them after 2014, and I also think the earlier years of the Switch just had the prominence of that zeitgeist factor being able to take these large console-level games and play them anywhere, and it brought third-party support that I never would've entertained seeing on a Nintendo system like Bethesda's games and stuff like L.A. Noire, which I think exposed a lot of Nintendo players to these kinds of games as well

TPC have acknowledged the issues with them already, and as recently as a week or two ago. I’m paraphrasing but they basically admitted the 1-2 year release schedule doesn’t really work well with the current scope of modern Pokémon. I stand by the fact that Scarlet and Violet are great games marred by abysmal performance issues, and if it weren’t for said issues, it would probably be considered the best games in the main series

    • @jenerossitea9247

      the thing that hardcore pokemon fans need to realize is that the majority of sales for the series come from those who casually play the games and also children (whose parents buy said game for them), who do not care about things that unfortunately and so the games sell well regardless of quality and performance@@HU-iv1ns
