I'm in the US and I imported brain training from Japan. I'm surprised that it made it through customs, and I worry everyday that the feds are going to bust down my door.
Interesting. For me, I bought a ME/SA (or "world edition") copy which is based on the UK release (ME/SA releases are usually based on US releases), and so it does display in English. However, I had to import a copy of QuickSpot _(edit: it's a BNE title, not a Nintendo title)_ from Japan as the English translation is only available on the North American eShop (my Nintendo account is registered in Australia), and did find that the copy I imported supported Japanese and Korean, but not English, so I play with the help of a mix of TH-cam videos and Google Translate.
@@kbhasi Most Nintendo published JP region games include English text and voices. The ones that don't are Xenoblade 2, Splatoon 2, Buddy Mission Bond, and Famicom Detective Club collector's edition. Missed one really obvious game. In L.A. Noire when you play with motion controls you reload your weapon by tapping the IR Camera just like in RE Revelations.
As someone who’s played Ring Fit Adventure every day for almost 2,000 days at this point (& hasn’t stopped), I’m *VERY* familiar with the IR camera as a heart-rate sensor at this point.
Technically you covered it with the Labo coverage as a whole but there was also the little remote control bug that used the rumble to move and the camera to see. Pretty nifty little thing, reminiscent of Hexbug toys.
Yeah, the Toy-Con Car is essentially a better version of the shovelware game Jon mention in the video, which is pretty ironic that it was listed right after Labo.
I would count LABO as 4 x games. Because all need that infrared sensor and you have 4 seperate kits to buy. (and in every LABO kit are multiple "games", vehicles, gadgets and builds that use it very intense in different unique ways. Like the piano, or the house with that little animal in it. Or the robot and so on.)
Ring Fit Adventure is hands down the best exercise game! I love the versatility of the ring con, the adventure mode and light RPG elements, and really how they utilized the joy cons and especially the infrared camera. It definitely gives a great workout!
I agree. It's the only exercise game I keep coming back to even after years of playing. I used to get back pain but hardly ever since I've played Ring Fit Adventure because it made me do exercises I hadn't thought about before.
Kinda sad the WarioWare games use a lot of the console's neat stuff like it did with WW Gold on the 3DS, but at the last of its life. I wish those kind of experiences were year-one on the system to encourage devs to make new stuff with what the console can provide
WarioWare was a series to showcase of a console's features before, WarioWare: Touched, Smooth Moves, Snapped and Game & Wario (technically not fully part of the series due to lack of microgames) released very close to the respective system's launch. WarioWare: Touched was even a launch title for the DS outside the US. The series just went on a hiatus after Game & Wario / Smooth Moves somehow (I guess Intelligent Systems was preoccupied). Also pretty weird how WarioWare: Move It! comes *after* Get It Together, you would assume they would try to use the Switch's capabilities to its fullest first, before pursuing the idea with the individual characters of Get It Together (Which seems kinda like a Spin-Off that way).
@@Mimi.1001 Yeah, Warioware's main purpose is to take advantage of the gimmicks that are a part of the console they're released on. So it is weird seeing they didn't make any use of them in Get It Together. Good to see Move It will make use of the gimmicks of the Switch, including the heavily underused IR sensor
I think you missed Spy Alarm. Same company that made Night Vision. You set up the joycon at the location you want, and the switch signals an alarm when something passes in from of the IR camera. Like Night Vision, it's not a game you play on the switch, it's using the switch as a toy when you have a sleepover with your friends and play secret agent and make a pillow fort.
I'm going to guess... probably less than you think. IR is the tech they use on the cheapest of the cheap gadgets and toys, and this doesn't even appear to be a particularly high end one.
@@gluttonousmaximus9048 Or the 3DS's IR sensor. The only game I can think of right now, that uses that part of the 3DS, is funnily enough, the Virtual Console version of Pokemon Crystal. How it handled Mystery Gift feature was different than other Pokemon games. Basically, you pointed it's IR sensor to another 3DS's IR sensor that someone is using Mystery Gift for, and you get a random reward. The 3DS already had wireless connectivity without the IR sensor, but I think it uses the IR sensor of the 3DS, to simulate the one used on the Gameboy Color, as Crystal was a GBC exclusive, unlike Gold and Silver, which were regular GB games and so, did not need the GBC to play them. I cannot think of a single other game right now, that actually used the 3DS's IR sensor. There may be more, but I cannot recall any others.
@@zigazav1IIRC for systems older than the new 3DS and new 2DS systems, there is an accessory that allows you to use Amiibo. (Which communicates with the system through IR)
I hope that Another Code Recollection does something cool with the Switch IR camera. The original games have puzzles that relied on DS/Wii exclusive hardware gimmicks, so I wonder if any new puzzles put in their place take advantage of special functions of the Joy-con controllers.
The only game where "close the DS" was a solution to a puzzle, along with "get so frustrated with a puzzle you sigh and that steams up a window". Gonna be very interesting to see what they do on the Switch.
I want to make a switch game just so the IR camera can recognize the player giving the game the middle finger, and having the game characters respond accordingly
Someone made a "burglar alarm" with it in Game Builder Garage, that actually works to set off an alarm from people physically moving around in the house
I’m surprised no one has re-implemented wiimote functionality with a sensor-bar like accessory. Gyro is fine but the Wiimote was so much better for pointing.
Correction: if you’re in handheld mode, the IR camera’s facing UP, and if you’re playing with just the joy-con in ur hands, the camera’s facing AWAY from you.
Honestly super cool seeing devs take advantage of an underutilized function. I still want to see more just use the HD rumble more. Id kill for a trauma center game on the switch that emulates surgery actions through HD rumble.

The IR camera is ultimately an unnecessary feature, but fits in perfectly with Nintendo's philosophy around making games. They don't make games with the most enriching gameplay or games that are stunning graphical showcases. Their philosophy is "we make games that are fun." Slapping your hand on the sensor to emulate reloading the magazine of a gun is not necessary at all, but it's just a fun thing to do. Same thing with playing games like Wii Sports or Zelda: Skyward Sword. They didn't make the games like that because it would be the "ideal" way to play those games. They made them like that because they thought it would be fun.
I would like to see bigger, more ergonomic joycons for the next switch. I think there’s a lot of potential for games with a two Joycon setup, but they hurt my hands after a few minutes.
Watching the most recent direct, I thought it was funny that they had 2 games in there that used the IR camera, almost like Nintendo were like “we haven’t forgotten our own tech guys!!”
I remember vitality sensor but yeah Ring Fit, Vitamina minigame, Trombone fits the Wii Music angle. If only the IR was on the front for Joycon cursor. I don't mind the IR but yeah it's very underused for what a camera in 1-2 Switch eating, Resident Evil reloading, Brain Training finger gestures (stylus too) and it's reused puzzles and more.
Honestly at this point if a Nintendo console *doesn’t* have a neat but gimmicky feature that’s only utilized in like 2% of its total game library, is it even a Nintendo console?
they likely considered pushing the camera but developers couldn’t come up with anything that would work without it being forced into games…the only one specifically designed for the camera and not as shovelware were the Labo and Ring Fit Adventure and really only because the camera could help
If you are playing RE Rev with knock off joycon all you have to do is the cocking motion and it works every time. Kinda wish they'd done that for HOTD Remake. Especially if you are familiar with the alternative load styles of HOTD 2-3 & Ghost Squad on Wii had a similar cocking/waggle to reload;in addition to shooting outside the screen.
With the Night Vision utility software, it kinda makes you wonder if Nintendo could use the I.R. camera functionality to bring the Game Boy Camera to Nintendo Switch Online. If the drivers for the modern gyro hardware can be added for Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, why not the drivers for the I.R. camera?
The Game Boy Camera was intended for visible light. While the IR camera could technically work, I doubt that Nintendo would enable it due to it being an IR camera. Not a terrible idea though, and I would like to be proven wrong.
