    It’s a shame to lose an event like this. Nintendo direct style streams were always going to take over and are mostly better, but the biggest and best reveals are best in front of a live audience

    Many people (including the ESA themselves) nowadays forget that E3 is supposed to be a trade show meant for the press, like CES and SXSW. But once they decided to make the event more publicly available for the larger general public and try to turn it into Comic-Con for gamers, this whole thing began to fall apart. Not to mention that we live in a time most of these companies can announce most of their products on their own time rather than showing them at some other event.

    As far as an alternative for networking, I think GDC could really grow into a place of gathering for passionate insiders of the industry. Embracing the publicity of E3 is really what killed it in my opinion. So I think the nature of GDC is a great way of gathering insiders without the high demand of a pubic presence.
    Even if there's ultimately less news than E3, I think GDC could tweak itself a bit to be a great place for the best people from across the industry to network annually.

    E3 was gaming hype Christmas, no other event even came close.
    I used to spend days, including booking off work during Uni so I could listen to E3 all day. I fondly remember being actually sick and staying home particularly the treehouse coverage of E3 2014 with all the segments on splatoon.
    I can't lie... E3 forced gaming companies to show off their futures in bulk and we will forever no longer have a week strait of gaming news for every company in the industry.
    E3 could be cringe at times, I remember a few boring ones from back in the day, but honestly just knowing that "Hey it's June, they're definitely going to give us an update on [upcoming title]" is basically dead now is deeply saddening.
    As a non-PS user, it was always cool to watch what was coming to PlayStation. Now that everything is separate, I don't really keep up with non PC/Nintendo news.
    I will miss E3, and I don't care what the haters say.

    This whole thing about events disappearing made me realize that if I ever had the opportunity to go to a con, I should have. These things don't stick around forever. And I know that's obvious, but it was kind of a wake up call for me when my favourite ontario cons disappeared instantly bc of the pandemic and I'll never be able to experience them again.

    Well... in 2017 Sony had one major announcement and it was a remake. In 2018 they showed no new major games anywhere. In 2019 they showed no new games anywhere. In 2020 they showed some games at the PS5 event. In September 2021 they showed 2 games with CG trailers. In 2022 they showed no new games (LoU Remake is a far cry from new).
    So I don't think Sony's issue is with E3.

  • @coltdeedede
    @coltdeedede ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Got a quick take - I’m done with the Geoff Keighley bashing, I don’t think Summer or Winter Games Fest is a replacement for E3, but it’s done a pretty fine job of providing a platform that otherwise clearly wouldn’t be there. He communicates to the fans, welcomes criticism, and has persevered to keep giving us game drops. If Nintendo and the big three played ball with him a little more we’d have some rad Game Fests. But I also understand why ppl might not like him. I don’t think it’s savage to bolster your program when E3 has failed to deliver since 2019. Both events can be super cringe but man at least we have someone trying to keep a twice a year gaming news/reveal event going 🤷‍♂️

    • @jimmythegamer2231
      @jimmythegamer2231 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they're not perfect, but I like the Geoff Keighley stuff. I'm still looking forward to Summer Game Fest and TGA each year. I think last years Game Awards was actually one of the best, and we still at least get some of those goofy E3-like moments like the "rabbi Bill Clinton" stuff or Christopher Judge's incredibly long speech.

    Even if I felt like the writing was on the wall for a while now, being that I felt like the past few E3s have pretty much floundered and been quite unremarkable (at least when they weren’t cancelled), it’s still a large shame that this happened. I never got to visit E3 in my lifetime since by the time it finally got opened to the public, I was in college and without a job, and so I didn’t really have a viable means of attending it. And now it looks like I won’t ever get the chance to experience it firsthand.
    There’s two main reasons why this ended up happening though: the first and most obvious is Nintendo. After showing that they could successfully do their own pre-recorded livestream and announce games without needing to be attached to E3, other companies ended up following suit, with Sony being the first to do so, and now Microsoft. And while Sony hasn’t been at E3 for years, having *NONE* of the big three there made this show feel like it was just pointless from the get-go.
    And the other reason is that they just failed to adapt to the times. As I said, in the era of Nintendo Directs, E3 failed to incentivize people and especially companies to stick with them, and the “digital” E3 they had in 2021 was a disaster where basically nothing was communicated effectively. And then when they cancelled last year’s show for no discernible reason, it just seemed like trying to beat a dead horse with an owner who has no idea how to use it.
    So tl;dr, it’s sad to see E3 go, but with the ESA’s incompetence and unwillingness to adapt, it’s not an entirely unexpected outcome either.

    • @icedcapplord710
      @icedcapplord710 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuff like Star Wars Celebration and Comic Con aren't really game-specific. Like as it concerns E3, the reason it's going by the wayside is that developers and publishers shifted the industry to accommodate, and then realized how inexpensive it would be on their end to just adapt to how online-savvy the gaming audience is now. Stuff like SDCC, D23, Star Wars Celebration, and other stuff of that sort are still very press driven even with more prominent online, consumer-centric components, and they're more about general pop culture rather than a specific niche

    But E3 just isn't needed anymore. It did used to be gaming Christmas for us each year. So much magic and exciting times. But now that happens many times throughout the year with different events, Nintendo Directs, State of Plays, Indie Showcases etc. E3 was getting smaller and smaller and less relevant. Geoff Keighly's Summer Games Fest will never be a replacement for E3, and honestly anything he does is a snooze fest. SGF and TGAs are just glorified extended commercials with terrible pacing and really just a waste of time and human resources. The way Keighly's been throwing salt at E3's cancellation is just really mean. The man is extremely petty, and it seems he has personal vendettas against people in the industry. He always seems to be promoting his connections first while shading anything that he dislikes. I'm glad he's bringing more resources and attention into the gaming landscape but he needs to leave his biases behind to be an industry leader. Rest in peace E3, it's time to put you to rest but you don't deserve the hate you've been getting from certain people like Keighly.

    Honestly, after the pandemic and the rumors that all 3 big companies won't even show up... E3 is probably finally dead.

    No one really cares about E3 anymore which is kind of sad. Once all the big publishers pulled out I knew it was bad news. Why would Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft need to be at E3 at a press conference and waste money on displays when they can just do their own thing?

    Wonder why they haven't done it in VR Chat or something with digital booths and such. Like I've seen some furry cons being done there or in Minecraft

    But then if Ordinary people CANT come to E3, how are they supposed to see your game? Feel sad for indie developers and the pandemic is OVER so we SHOULD be going back to the way things were like in the 00s.
