    One funny thing is that Pikmin 3 Deluxe got a 1.0.1 patch the other week (3 years after release) that changed nothing in the actual game, but only changed the logo on the icon in the home menu.

    The fact Kirby and the Forgotten Land never got any bugfix or patch is, to me, proof of how well constructed the game is (it still has glitches, but nothing gamebreaking from what I know).
    Sure, it isn’t always a proof of quality and sometimes updates come because of additional content (which I would have welcomed with open arms for this game !).
    However, Forgotten Land definitely felt like a complete and satisfying package to fully complete for me, and I really look forward to a potential follow up of one of my favorite Switch games !

      @@jaretco6423 That's true, especially since different people won't have the same viewpoint on what would be "generally" considered to be "the best games". Even my favorite games like Xenoblade 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land have aspects that I feel other games in the same series may have done better, though that's why I also love their series so much !

    Just wanted to point out that Bayonetta 1 and 2's patches were to add extra languages into the game, and those were released over 4 years after they released. Bayonetta 2 got a second patch that changes some text in the intro to be different from the first game. So those would probably count as 1.0 with an asterisk. The patches were incredibly minor and released years later

  • @Widgerber
    @Widgerber ปีที่แล้ว +62

    I feel like both Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 could count as "never patched" given that the update they received only added extra language options.
    Edit: I should note that both games were at 1.0 until Sept 2022 when Bayonetta 3 launched.

    I think this is an interesting video simply due to the fact we see what games need patches, Day 1 1.0.1 updates, multiple updates, or have DLCs. The fact that Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Fighters 2, and Dream Buffet didn't get patched at all is incredible as it shows that the game is perfect upon release from the viewpoint of the devs and critics.

    The best things about the games that never received a day 1 patch is that you don't have to install anything on the Switch's storage. In turn, that gives you more room for other games. Although, I have seen some Nintendo games getting reprints where the latest patch is on the cart; my copy of Xenoblade Chronicles DE is like that.

  • @Heatseekingwookie

    worth noting that although alot of these games had patches most are still completely playable without updates straight from the cartridge. nintendo still have a pretty good ethic when it comes to polish, for the most part anyway. even games that have game breaking glitches.alot of the time they are kind of rare to come across even if they exist. i remember there was a game breaking glitch in metroid dread to do with map markers that i completely avoided whilst playing without patches.i quite frequently test games without updates and i basically never come across any bugs in nintendo games

    • @MathiasWolfbrok
      @MathiasWolfbrok ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not to mention that Nintendo also had a very good track record updating their carts at the cartridge level, for instance if you buy a new copy of ARMS now, you will just straight up get the game with all of its DLC directly on the cartridge (It does make it harder to track for collectors and speedrunners though as I don't think the version of the game is written on the box)

    patches vs content updates / additions should be considered different. I wonder how many of the games that were glossed over due to content updates (mario kart, sports, ect) actually had day-one patches or not, or major patches at all for glitches or stability. Obviously though Nintendo games are often more polished than other major studios.

    Now I'm super curious how this compares to the physical games from previous consoles. It certainly wasn't unheard of for carts and disc media to have different versions released over the time it was sold. And I'm not even just talking about how JP would usually be the original, USA would get some fixes, and Europe would have the latest version; I mean that even within a single region like USA there would be revisions to the game released over time. Though the regional release timeline disparities making some regions the most up-to-date / patched is also interesting haha.

    • @VagrantValmar
      @VagrantValmar ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1.0 is usually the release version included in the cart unless it's Pokémon which does not follow that logic (or ethic...).
      Usually speaking, 1.0 is release, x.1.x is a relatively major such as a bunch of major fixes, balancing, or adding new stuff such as new languages, extra scenes, maybe performance fix, whatever. And x.x.1 is usually just a very, very minor bug that you would've never seen or realized it exists.
      That's usually how Nintendo handles it

    • @Dash123456789Brawl
      @Dash123456789Brawl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VagrantValmarYou forgot to address the final part of that query.
      Generally speaking, an update that changed the first digit of a version number should be an absolutely huge change to the game. Sometimes it might even fundamentally change the entire experience if playing it, like with Terraria adding an incredible amount of content to the game across all stages of gameplay progression. I don’t remember well enough what was added in which update to go into detail, though.
      In Genshin Impact it means the introduction of a new country, along with tons of new music, quests, gameplay mechanics, NPC styles, structures, and the start of the next arc in the main story of the game.
      Now I don’t mean to downplay the importance of adding a new character to Smash. I know they have to change a lot to balance the game around the new character, add their stage, music, and various Mii costumes they release at the same time; but that seems like it ought to be a second-digit update to me compared to other games.
      That’s just my opinion of course. It could be that’s standard for fighting games’ roster additions, in which case it’s understandable Smash would follow suit.

    • @VagrantValmar
      @VagrantValmar ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Dash123456789Brawl I get what you're saying but you're wrong when you say it "should be" a huge change.
      It really doesn't need to be. That depends on each developer and how they name or number their updates. There's no standard for this. Updates simply fixing a game's bug can be 2.0 if the developer wants to call it that way.

    NSMBU Deluxe *needs* an update. The final level of New Super Luigi U on Wii U lets you play as your Mii if you use the “Nabbit Code.” But Nabbit is a selectable character on Switch, so the code doesn’t work…and if you play as Nabbit, who can’t use the squirrel suit, you just die.
    I contacted Nintendo about it and everything. Still salty, lol.

    I’m annoyed that Nintendo abandoned ARMS after only 10 months, Nintendo promised a year of updates and the last time I checked a year is 12 months.

    Counting a 1.0 release with no updates and a 1.0 release with later updates but not a 1.1 release with no later updates is kinda weird.

    Bayonetta 1 and 2 are also 1.0.0 launches .
    The patches are added chinese and it adds close to Bayonetta 3 release.

    I actually really like this type of video just as a unique information thing. Wouldn't mind seeing how other publishers stack up against Nintendo for releasing games that don't need immediate patches.

    I remember in college I had a professor. Nice guy. German. A classmate asked about the deadline for the "rough draft" and he flew into a fit. Said: I don't want your 'rough' draft. I want your FIRST draft. I want you to put everything you've got into that first draft, and then we can talk about how it'll be made perfect. Game developers these days are turning in their rough drafts.
    Also, I would argue Fire Emblem 1 DID have an update. It was delisted. Maybe we can call that Down Dating.

    My question is how many games have updates for certain regional versions, but not for others? While far from first-party, I know that Persona 5 Scramble (Strikers) got 3 patches in Japan, but no patches anywhere else in the world because the worldwide version was released later.

    I was unaware of the language support patch for the first Bayonetta. Although, to this day, Bayonetta Origins is still 1.0, which I wonder will be patched since I had an interesting glitch happen to me during the final boss's second phase.

    Metroid dread releases also with 1.0.
    The 1.0.1 patch came October 20th 2021
    The game releases on October 8th 2021.
    Its not very long but it should at least go to the "minor patch later" category 🤔

    • @suntannedduck2388

      I assume because it's not installed data. It's likely any save or cartridge install data (seen PS4 games have system profile data saved usually with Japanese third party titles do this) is there maybe in some games? Just a guess. That or a bug (visual or calculating the data) that's also possible.

    I know Bravely Default II had no updates ever. Which strikes me as odd because that game has a lot of minor hiccups in performance. It takes a few seconds to open the menu and it stops every time it autosaves. Nothing major and I don't know if these issues are in the pc version.
