The Pyunkang Yul Essence saved my skin from a skin barrier disaster. And that’s still hard for me to believe. It’s one of just a few products that my skin could tolerate. It wasn’t just tolerable, either. It helped to heal my skin. I’m still amazed by that.
As a dry skin girly (dry even when the humidity is at 85%), I never felt like toner did much. I just use it because it feels like part of a ritual, and it adds hydration right after washing my face. Essences have been really useful for me, and their viscosity also makes application easier.
My skin is as dry as yours but l am also acne prone. Hydrating toner was pointless but an AHA toner is very helpful. My routine is cleansing milk, acid toner, essence and then the rest. Luck!!
Great conversation about redundancy that I've never really considered - thank you! That Jumiso Snail Mucin 95 has made it into my cart and when I finish the Vegreen I'll start on that one because I do find snail or the vegan snail alternative so helpful in my routine. (Love the festive vibe today btw!)
I've seen the Mixsoon suggested as an alternative for folks who don't want to use snail mucin in addition to the Vegreen one. Dr Dray has recommended the skin1004 probio cica ampoule as an alternative as well.
I just got the Pyunkang Yul essence in my advent calendar today! I’m super excited to try it, I’ve loved one of their moisturizer in the past. And that Mary and May one is AMAZING! I absolutely love how smooth and supple it leaves my skin. That whole line is great, even the sheet masks.
Hi Alice, now that I'm more mature I'm wondering more about what steps in my routine have made a big difference to my skin, because I've been buying items that haven't done anything for my skin, I feel like it makes a lot more sense to prioritize and What do I want to achieve with my routine and eliminate all the steps that are redundant in my routine, for example my priority is hyperpigmentation and for my skin to generate collagen and maintain it and I am studying to buy with conscience, plus things are so expensive in my country that I have to start taking things more seriously, before or until recently I did not think about establishing priorities and the economy is chaos in Chile and they raised the rent of my apartment a lot 😭, so that is my reality now. A kiss Alice and I hope you have a great week 🥰
I think that’s a wise approach in general! And yes, I hate the economic instability. It seems to be practically a worldwide problem right now (which I guess makes sense given just how much is going horribly in some parts of the world 💔). I think it ends up affecting all of us!
I don’t think I could make my essences redundant, but I like having multiple skincare steps. I haven’t tried the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, but I agree that all of the remaining essences are some the best in their categories, I have them all. I cannot give up my toners or my essences, their different ingredients have different effects and I mix and match them to care for my dry/normal, mature skin and rosacea. I am excited to try new products in the coming year and a bit sad to retire others when they are no longer the best for me.
It is sad when that happens. I feel it has happened mostly as a result of reformulation for me (or just that situation of a product being good but not the “best” from the start)

I appreciate your reviews and helps me narrow down the products I might enyoy. I never felt watching your videos that you push products, or creates the urge to spend! Please continue, much needed!
Hi Alice. Yes I agree with the milky toner, I too use it just before moisturizer after toner, essence and serums. It replenish the oil and water in skincare and the skin gets ready for the moisture based moisturizer for dry skin types.. 😊
I have been thinking about this and I will think about it for a while. I think if you are severely dehydrated and very short of time, the essence phase is important. You might not need to use this twice a day, or every day if you are using a toner sheet mask and serum. I think this would be very effective after toning, before your retinol/retinoid in the evening.
Definitely agree! I do think the difference between dehydrated vs dry can be very confusing at times, as dehydration is a temporary concern while dryness is a skin type. Thus an essence (or other deep hydrator) can help “fix” dehydration. And dry skin types will need a heavier moisturizer for life!
I'm new to skincare and while trying to put together a routine that makes sense, I'm absolutely catching myself sneeking in some products that are - well - redundant... I'm trying to be super minimalistic so: clean (foam), hydrate (toner), treat (serum), protect (sunscreen AM/moisturizer PM). But the Dr Ceuracle or the Mixsoon essences are good examples for products I kinda wanna fit somewhere so I come up with some new steps just to fit them in, something like "hydrating/moisturizing balance". It's just basically my FOMO!
Wonderful recs as always! Tempted to open my bean essence backup- but lord knows i have too much open right now! I'm also almost finished with the skin1004 probio cica toner- LOVING that! My skin is feeling like paper too LOL so starting with a thicker toner like that has saved me time layering!
When i need calming I use FAB Wild Oat Hydrating toner. When my skin is more normal i use Indie Lee Co Q10 toner. I also keep Neutrogena Alcohol Free toner to make sure my make-up is off after a double cleaning. I don't use essence as much. I have oily skin. ❌️⭕️
That sounds like a perfect system! I feel you on the makeup removing toner as well. I’ve been trying some stubborn to remove mascaras lately-have really needed to follow with toner to wipe up the extra flakes!
During colder months, I do the same - I add Dr. Ceuracle kombucha essence into my nightime routine, as my cheeks and under eye are quite dry and it helps so much. I add some heavier eye cream (Chogongjin still going strong) and lock all in with something nicely occlusive - again enter Chogongjin! 😂 great recommendations, tried them all (guess based on whose recommendations) and fully agree on the best overall ☺
I have paired down my face products. I cut out toners and essences. I use Paula's Choice exfoliate, retinal, vitamin c, copper and other peptides in a serum, and a couple heavy creams for my mature dry skin in Phoenix. You do such a nice job explaining what benefits you see, explain products very well. 💐
It’s so funny, most of the channels I watch actually have the opposite skin type (so I get a good idea of how products work on them lol!) I like: Sherea delsol, Tina Tanaka Harris, Kelly Driscoll , Lab Muffin, the Monodist ☺️
I'm starting to loath the complete lack of regulation on skincare naming conventions. My favourite essences (ByWishtrend propolis and Neogen Micro essences) are what I would call a "watery serum". They are not meant to be layered like toners, but pack a lighter punch than a typical serum. An example of a serum that I would totally rename as essence is the Isntree Bifida Ampoule. I love its ingredients and the watery form, but I totally don't use it in my serum step 😅
Before Black Friday I watched your videos and decided I would ass the kombucha one. My skin (normal, resilient, aging) LOVES toners/essences. Of course I started with 1 and then worked my way up to 6! I do use them for layering between actives. I wasn’t quite sure where to put the kombucha one but now I’ll add it just before moisturizers. I have been having problems with being dehydrated (which means it’s going to affect my skin) this year. I do drink enough water but now drink electrolytes a couple of times a week. I can see it in my skin sometimes so I’ll usually jump up and drink some electrolytes…. I really should have added ALL the toners on my wishlist as I’m still down 2 now that the kombucha has moved out of my toner part of my routine! 😂 My dehydrated skin loves all the hydrating toners I put on it! Luckily I only seem to be allergic to rice, yea I know it’s all the rage which means it’s on the label!
Alice, you look fabulous in red! I love essences❤ I can totally live without them, but keep on buying One Thing and Mixsoon essences that I use on my neck only 😂 because I have no place in my face routine for them.
Thanks, Great Video. I've got the Pyunkang Yul Essence which I love, also the Dr. Ceuracle Kombucha Essence, which I also Love. Thinking of trying something new. Do you think the Indie Lee Co-Q10 toner would be ok for dry skin. Would love to include Co-Q10 in my routine, but don't want another serum. Thanks
Oh absolutely, that’s still one of my favorite toners of all time! Just know it has a bit of a floral smell from the ingredients in it (listed out, not under “fragrance”) 😊
Yayyy love your videos :D I have been wanting to try the onion and pyunkang yul essence ! i love the kombucha one 😍 random question for you? i am looking to get a medicube device and i’ve watched your reviews on them. which would you recommend for fine lines forming like on the forehead from expressions ? like the 11s or lines from raising your eyebrows on the forehead? i know you said the smile lines were reduced when you used the ussera deep shot, would it also be effective for the forehead too? thanks for all the great content :’)
Yup, probably the ussera. That said, I’m still working on my deep dive of all these devices (sometime in Jan) so I admit I haven’t yet done all the research on RF at this point. You might want to see if one of the esthetician channels here has more advice on the best option (Penn Smith is great!)
I just received my Yesstyle order from Black Friday today and ordered the Mary & May Intense Moisture kit. I can’t wait to try the essence. I’ve been using the I’m From Rice Toner for a while. I like it, but it leaves an odd film on my skin - I’m hoping the Mary & May can replace it.
@@AliceintheRabbitHole I like it so far, but I think they expected someone with hulk-like strength to open the mini bottle - I hope the full sized bottles aren’t screwed on so tightly LOL I’ve been using the full sized Idebenone serum for 3 weeks now and love it and wanted to try their other stuff.
Thank you for the video. Now I am convinced I need to try the jumiso peptide essence. I've been eyeing to this product quite a while. I have the cosrx snail cream and I love it. I really want to try essence with snail but i am torn between cosrx or jumiso. Now i know which one i will purch😊ase.
Hey Alice, I like the point abiout the Jumiso essence bringing the other products deeper, but I saw in other video you recommended first to apply those other actives and on top of it the Cosrx snail essence, and I think with this one wouldnt it work same? for example firsly apply a dedicated peptide serum or any other concentrated serum and then this Jumiso essence on top and it will help that other serum to go deeper, kind of bring it together with it into deeper layers of the skin, you know what I mean?:)) what do you think of that order?:)
Quick question if you see this for the Mary May Vs Dr Ceuracle essence which one would you recommend based on smell? I was looking at the Dr Ceuracle one but I have a hard time with products that don’t smell good I’m more an experience girlie lol and no sensitivity to fragrance :) merci!!
My normal/dry skin just looooovves toners and essences. After I wash my face I just keep slappin' 'em on (SK-II! Indie Lee CoQ10! Not enough? Spray on that NIOD SOD! Still not enough? Isntree Green Tea toner! Slappity slap! etc etc until my skin stays hydrated for at least 2 min. Then it's enough to move on with serum and/or moisturizer and sunblock. Needless to say I own more toners and essences than anything else. This year's new star: numbuzin no. 3. In winter I also apply toner to the body, thanks to the gigantic value size bottomless pit of Manyo bifida toner.
Will there be a video on best mist of 2023?? I feel like there are so many factors that can affect why i will like the mist product n i would like 2 see ur opinions on it
Thanks, great video. I have a question regarding Essences. You say they may contain oils? So If I put an essence on after washing skin, since it has oil in it, are serums able to penetrate the essence and go into the skin? I think of this especially with the Dr. Ceuracle essence, it feels heavenly and I want to feel that subsequent serums will penetrate.
Oils don’t block absorption. You might be thinking of occlusives, and while some oils have SOME occlusive properties, it’s more accurate to call them emollient overall ☺️
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Glad you told me that. Why did I feel that oils were occlusives...I recently got the rose hips oil from The Ordinary and apply after my moisturizer at night thinking it was an occlusive. I guess now I'll put a thin layer of Vaseline as an occlusive, on top of all of it.
It would be so helpful as we have so many products out there and it can get overwhelming. Don't get me wrong I have drawers of skin care products but capsule routine would help so much when ur skin is not tiptop and also helpful for travelling
Im having an issue with dryness its like i wake up and all the life is completely sucked out of my skin should i try the mixoon bean essense at night ? I wanted to ask u before i bought it . Its like all my moisturizers seem to have that matt type finish and even with all the layers i use im still waking up dry feeling or should i try the TYF gel cream again what do u think would help more .
Hmmm. Well there’s a few options you could try: first off a heavy duty occlusive. Doesn’t have to be Vaseline/aquaphor, could be a good sleeping mask as well. You could also add in an oil, as those are great for softening/filling in the cracks in dry skin. And yes, the mixsoon is great but I feel you shouldn’t have to purchase it immediately to fix the problem (because I assume you do have a pretty good assortment of toners/essences?) I would suggest you try the 7-layer method plus the oil, plus the occlusive. I think that should help!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Last night I layered up the vegreen toner and that seemed to help alot . I usually layer like crazy but I have been using more watery toners then like the Dr C kombucha or something but I think the vegreen worked well. It's this weird weather and I hate being cold so the heat is cranked and it's sucking the life out of my skin but other then that issue my skin seems to be fine. Think maybe I'm talking myself into trying a new product for the hell of it cause I want it lol just happen to maybe fix my issue at the same time 🤣
Hmm, they’re on par as being both excellent options to me, but Isntree’s is much more viscous. I repurchased Anua’s because I constantly do the DIY mask system, so it’s a better fit for my preferences; if you don’t do that, you might prefer Isntree’s. Hope that helps!
Ohhh interesting. No I don’t think so, but Korea changed their regulations on compound vs active extracts. Brands have been writing out only the word extract in the INCI, but…it’s not the full story. What’s IN that extract??
it's odd, the CoxRx snail mucin did absolutely NOTHING for my dry sin but the Jumiso has been one of the most hydrating products I've EVER used in my life - does anyone know why?
Peptides are humectants! I’ve become such a fan of the whole category, and maybe they do a whole lot more, but…I can absolutely say, they boost hydration!
Alice i think you got a bad batch of the Dr C. Ive had mine 1 year and its not gone off at all. Im not sure which essence ill try next. Ive built a heft cart .😂
I am still struggling with the bean essence. 😂 I really want it work with my devices. Have you tested the new Medicube device? I'm really curious about it.
I can't use any product that has soy 😢 I'm not acne prone, my skin is on the drier side and at times can be sensitive but for some reason my skin hates soy. I will wake up the following morning with big red pimples. I kinda suspect it's more of a bad/allergic reaction than acne.
So sorry to hear! It’s helpful to have it narrowed down in terms of allergies/reactions though - can personally attest to this after figuring out (and then avoiding!) my own allergens
Yeah tbh that makes sense to me, especially when you notice that products feel named randomly - ie that Skinfood Essence; it absolutely could be called a serum!
I've read something similar in an article when I was trying to figure out what the differences were. The article basically said to use what works for your skin and don't feel pressured to use them all.
A lot of stuff is marketing. I've heard Dr Dray say that in her videos. Like male skincare or kids skincare or night skincare. A lot of it is how brands get more money.@@noneofurbusiness5223
Yeah it’s harder to find essences without that (given its humectant/thickening properties). Hmm, maybe toners instead? The toner pad method might be a great solution for you too!
Unless you are happy with single ingredient essences, BG is in everything?! Sorry. Have a look at Skin Deva's CoQ10 serum? It is lightweight enough to use as an essence but powerfully formulated to qualify as serum. It is also very cost effective and can go toe to toe with kbeauty viz quality and cost. Good hunting!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Very true. Have you tried DIY fermented rice water with cotton pad method or in spritz bottle? You may be surprised at how quick and effective this is as toner step. Super cheap too.
Why are u whining out the end of your words??… it makes it so hard to listen to… seems intentional because it’s not all the time, but I mean when we say a word, we just end the word we don’t continue whining the last syllable or the ending of the word…. Like you keep saying “tonerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” (moaning the er) like comin that is beyond obnoxious … “hydrationnnnnnnnnn” lol Jesus 🙄

I add some heavier eye cream (Chogongjin still going strong) and lock all in with something nicely occlusive - again enter Chogongjin! 😂 great recommendations, tried them all (guess based on whose recommendations) and fully agree on the best overall ☺
So happy to hear you’re enjoying the chogongjin products! 😁
Alice always looking out for our wallets, I was eyeing Dr Ceracle and Mary & May, happy to hear I don't need them at the same time!
Love this video!!!
You mentioned that you follow some other skincare TH-camrs. Could you please share some with dry skin? Thank you!
It’s so funny, most of the channels I watch actually have the opposite skin type (so I get a good idea of how products work on them lol!)
I like: Sherea delsol, Tina Tanaka Harris, Kelly Driscoll , Lab Muffin, the Monodist ☺️
My favourite category 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just love this category ! My fav is the Mary & May Cream Essence . Now I have to try the Mixsoon .
YUP it does feel like the names are chosen out of a hat!
Such Great picks!!! The Onion & Mary & May are on my wishlist for this year for sure!!
Hi Alice, I have only used the haruharu essence and the Hatomugi skin condition milk and love both very much❤❤, I will try the pyunkang yul next.
Love this video. So much information; and useful and practical tips. Thank you. Subscribed!
Glad to hear it’s going well for you! It really is a wonderful category of skincare 😍
You’re such a cute little Elf today ❤ Skincare Santa’s little helper 😅
Haha thank you 🎄😁
Alice, you look fabulous in red!
I love essences❤ I can totally live without them, but keep on buying One Thing and Mixsoon essences that I use on my neck only 😂 because I have no place in my face routine for them.
Thank you! Which one thing essence are you using? I’m still trying to get through my artemisia toner from them - their bottles are GIANT lol!
You might want to see if one of the esthetician channels here has more advice on the best option (Penn Smith is great!)
thank you :’) (just seeing this response a week later, YT didn’t notify me 🤦🏻♀️) i will check out that channel ! i appreciate the info :D
Let me know how it goes for you! I would say I like the I’m From Rice toner, but love the Mary & May 😁
@@AliceintheRabbitHole I like it so far, but I think they expected someone with hulk-like strength to open the mini bottle - I hope the full sized bottles aren’t screwed on so tightly LOL I’ve been using the full sized Idebenone serum for 3 weeks now and love it and wanted to try their other stuff.
You look stunning. Love the hat.
Alice goodvideo. I really want to try Mixsoon Bean Essence
Alice have you tried the Barr Centella Soothing Sun Essence? I've heard really good things about it!
I was looking at the Dr Ceuracle one but I have a hard time with products that don’t smell good I’m more an experience girlie lol and no sensitivity to fragrance :) merci!!
i don’t even use a toner anymore and essence is good enough for me
Love your video, as always. What I’d loved to know is what’s on your lips?
Oh thanks! It’s a new buxom kit I got in PR-wasn’t expecting to love it so much but it’s brilliantly curated. It’s called: A-List Lips ☺️
Dry skin can drink up toners - I can attest! 🤣
Great video Alice :D
Thank you! ☺️
Will there be a video on best mist of 2023?? I feel like there are so many factors that can affect why i will like the mist product n i would like 2 see ur opinions on it
You look beautiful. Have an amazing week ❌️⭕️
Thank you! Hope you have a great week too ☺️💕
Thanks, great video. I have a question regarding Essences. You say they may contain oils?
So If I put an essence on after washing skin, since it has oil in it, are serums able to penetrate the essence and go into the skin? I think of this especially with the Dr. Ceuracle essence, it feels heavenly and I want
to feel that subsequent serums will penetrate.
Would U ever consider doing a capsule skin care routine that may be focus on different skin concerns?
I have thought about it!
Think maybe I'm talking myself into trying a new product for the hell of it cause I want it lol just happen to maybe fix my issue at the same time 🤣
I do keep some snail in my arsenal!❌️⭕️
Do you think the Anua toner is better than the Isntree Onion Toner? Thanks!
Hmm, they’re on par as being both excellent options to me, but Isntree’s is much more viscous. I repurchased Anua’s because I constantly do the DIY mask system, so it’s a better fit for my preferences; if you don’t do that, you might prefer Isntree’s. Hope that helps!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole thank you very much! Happy holidays!
Has anyone used the Plant Base Time Stop Collagen Ampoule ? Curious if it's worth trying
Sorry I haven’t, maybe someone else has tho!
I have to try Jumiso 😃
Was mixsoon essence reformulated? On my box, it has listed glycerin and water too
Ohhh interesting. No I don’t think so, but Korea changed their regulations on compound vs active extracts. Brands have been writing out only the word extract in the INCI, but…it’s not the full story. What’s IN that extract??
oh my god you look soooooo cute with that headband
Haha thank you 🎅🤣
have you tried Rovectin skin treatment essence yet?
it's odd, the CoxRx snail mucin did absolutely NOTHING for my dry sin but the Jumiso has been one of the most hydrating products I've EVER used in my life - does anyone know why?
Peptides are humectants! I’ve become such a fan of the whole category, and maybe they do a whole lot more, but…I can absolutely say, they boost hydration!
Alice i think you got a bad batch of the Dr C. Ive had mine 1 year and its not gone off at all. Im not sure which essence ill try next. Ive built a heft cart .😂
I’ve wondered that too. Thankfully it lasted pretty well; it was only about 1/5-1/6 of the bottle that smelled funky!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole love the product. See ya tomorrow 😘
I am still struggling with the bean essence. 😂 I really want it work with my devices. Have you tested the new Medicube device? I'm really curious about it.
The new eye one? Not yet, though I did just pick up the body device - it took FOREVER to ship!!
Watching and cooking!❌️⭕️
I can't use any product that has soy 😢 I'm not acne prone, my skin is on the drier side and at times can be sensitive but for some reason my skin hates soy. I will wake up the following morning with big red pimples. I kinda suspect it's more of a bad/allergic reaction than acne.
So sorry to hear! It’s helpful to have it narrowed down in terms of allergies/reactions though - can personally attest to this after figuring out (and then avoiding!) my own allergens
Did you watch other videos by the Monodist? That’s one video where she says that there are no difference between essences, ampoules, serums etc..
Motorist also said it was marketing ploy to make you buy more stuff.
A lot of stuff is marketing. I've heard Dr Dray say that in her videos. Like male skincare or kids skincare or night skincare. A lot of it is how brands get more money.@@noneofurbusiness5223
Are there any k beauty essences without butylene glycol 😭
I'm from mugwort essence (100% mugwort extract) I haven't tried it but I've ordered it. Maybe it's something worth looking into?❤
Could one not just swap out the toner with an essence for greater results? Making the toner the redundant one? 🤔
the voice is shaky...but aside from that im taking notes..📝
❤❤❤
I hate Pyunkang yul For some reason it doesn’t feel comfortable on my skin
I use my essences instead of toners haha 😂
🐰

Why are u whining out the end of your words??… it makes it so hard to listen to… seems intentional because it’s not all the time, but I mean when we say a word, we just end the word we don’t continue whining the last syllable or the ending of the word…. Like you keep saying “tonerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” (moaning the er) like comin that is beyond obnoxious … “hydrationnnnnnnnnn” lol Jesus 🙄
