    I've been feeling discouraged for years...years... because I lost my upper range and had to start dropping the key to a lot of songs or stop playing them entirely. I've been so focused on improving my chest voice and didn't even know the mixed voice existed. This video and your others restored it within a few hours. This video though especially...explained it perfectly. Thanks so much. I know I have a long way to go, but thanks to you I know how to practice/improve.

    Your voice itself is a great example for us, Tyler. Probably one of the best male voices I've ever heard. Since I started to watch your videos I had the confirmation that the "mix voice" was something I had already experienced(when I was laughing really hard, for example), but I wasn't sure how to control it. So, your videos on this subject helped me a lot, these exercises with the mouth covered were gold. I'm slowly getting better, I think... ahahahaha. It is really hard to describe this feeling, but I maybe have discovered my "mix" this way:
    -> I went up the scale until my voice broke.
    -> Then I started to play around that break, because there is a point of balance where you are in a stable sound (sometimes sound awful). So, I would go up and down (without pushing chest voice) trying not to break.
    -> When I'm on this balance state I feel a could go really high, and I can, actually! It's a powerful voice, that feels really light(and unstable sometimes?). Of course I don't sound anything like Tyler, by I think I'm at the same spot with my voice.
    PS.: Your neighbors may think you are crazy when doing that(but, who cares anyway?)
    Tyler, is this familiar to you? Or I'm just crazy? hahahahah. Anyway, thank you very much for this amazing content for free, we don't deserve that!

      Wow thank you for the very kind words! I really appreciate it! Yes totally laughing very hard will get you into mix voice! It is really hard to describe the feeling, i would say that means you are onto something. The goal isn't to sound like me it's to sound like 100% authentically you!
      By the way it's ok that it feels unstable at times, that is totally normal! In time it does become more and more stable and useable! Keep at it!

    I used to watch your videos a lot before I got a teacher and had never understood what you were actually explaining and trying to teach until it finally hit me that all of the singers I listen to are absolutely not pulling chest no matter how convincing it sounds. There are so many ways to find your mixed voice. However, the way i found mine was through lip bubbles. Similar to what you have explained in past videos, I practiced ascending and descending between my chest and head voice. I did it by letting my voice crack naturally between my chest and head voice where it felt most comfortable rather than make any effort to pull my chest. Slowly but surely within a few weeks of practicing this small exercise almost daily, my two registers began to make less of dramatic "crack" but instead a blend between each other. I kept on doing these exercises, then began opening my mouth when I did them. Learning mixed voice was one thing, but learning how to utilize it and be able to access it on any vowel or note is a whole new challenge. It has been about a year since i started these exercises. It's taken a long time to learn how to implement mixed voice into other faucets of my repertoire. Learning how to find mixed has helped me make a massive amount of improvement and has completely revolutionized the way i sing. If only I had learned mixed voice much earlier, I would be much further in my singing process. To anyone reading, please listen to what Tyler is saying. I was just like you not too long ago. Learning how to mix takes patience and time. Stick with it

    *This brother is so blessed! I just discovered him today. I hope binging on his videos will help me find my chesty mix.*
    *I have built a robust (full, beautiful, resonant) chest voice all the way up to the E4 and a head voice well above the high C (the 6th register), however, I just haven't found my chesty mix. I'm so sick and tired of my heady mix at this point, so much so that I wish I can put it on an air craft and send it on a voyage to some far far away, even though I only discovered it like around October 2020 (4 months ago).*
    *I'm learning on my own. Never had a professional voice lesson, because I can't afford it, yet. (Of course I will in a not so distant time. I'm so grateful that these wonderful souls have found it in their hearts to freely share their hard earned knowledge of the art with us here). Of all the voice coaches I've seen teaching the chesty mix that best resonates with my problems, this brother demonstrates something that appears to be the most helpful. I just can't sing "in chest" from the F4 up. I just flip into this super soprano-ish sound from F4 up and it's so annoying. I want to sound like ME all the way up. I can modify my sound later to mimic any voice type I want at will, rather just sounding a particular way because I cannot do anything about it. I like the fact that he demonstrates it so that I know what I'm going for instead of just bang away on the keyboard while smiling at me and telling me good job even though I suck. I pray this channels does it for me. Wish me luck guys.*

All of a sudden I effortlessly hit a G#4 without realizing it (typically max out pulling chest for F4)... Mixed voice is everything and I can't wait to master it. Great overview!

    Tyler your voice is insane! The voice and ability I have dreamt of having. I have been singing for many years, originals and with a cover band but have always been a chest puller. It is exhausting and requires way too much energy. I have recently started to experiment with my head voice, attempting to add mix fullness. It still sounds thin to me and not convincing. Could be time for a lesson with you.

    • @tylerwysong

      Thanks so much! Yes I hear you! I used to be the same! Chest pulling creates so much fatigue and makes singing not fun! Yes it takes some practice! Great explanation as usual! Thank you! I'm a baritone, and I've always been a chest puller, so I kinda learned to sing through that and actually I was in a chest dominant mix without even knowing that I already was in my mixed voice, and I was able to hit B4/C5 but I just couldn't sustain the note and it was exhausting and hurting me, but then I discovered that great vocalists were using mixed voice, and actually, when they are belting, they all use mixed voice cause that's the right and healthy technique, so you actually helped me understand what was mixed voice! Thanks a lot! I'm still learning, but I got a question, should I start mixing at C4? Because I already feel the need of mixing there and it really feels easy to me!

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ok so this may open a can of worms and I will most likely make a video about it but when and where you mix depends on the vowel you are singing, for instance an "Ee" vowels with mix around an A3 however an "Ah" vowel will mix much higher around E4! Of course it does also depend on the individuals vocal tract as well but those are just generalizations of what we typically see, different vowels mix at different pitches. Kind of blew my mind when I learned that!

    • @keinanloicrija
      @keinanloicrija 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tylerwysong thanks a lot for your answer! Wow, I'm shocked, I didn't know that, but I know what you're talking about! Mix is a lot harder than what I thought then 😅! Cause it needs to be really well controlled! Can't wait for this video!

    i like the semi occlusion for training more force insertion to the voice by pressure, thats nice.
    interestingly, when i do the exercise you suggested with "MUM" + semi, i get stronger force in second to fourth harmonics, where the fourth overcome the third, while the fourth getting close to the second but still cant pass it. interesting... the third seems to be hard to manipulate, it seems like its getting stronger with all the others linearly, while the more upper overtones are easier to manipulate by vocal placements.
    that's ok, if someone had a golden trick for mix voice he would win a youtube award, its not that mix voice got a name of being a difficult skill for nothing, no one up to now managed to provide a straight forward foolproof tool that gets most people to be able to produce it.
    is it possible that some people just cant really produce it?

    Thanks for the great videos, Tyler! Been watching you since you were in videos at your former vocal studio. The extra semi-occlusion from the covering of the mouth really helps to solidify the feeling of that "mix" sensation!
    I noticed you haven't really talked about "edge" or vocal fry in your videos about mix (although you did talk about "crying on pitch" in the Bruno Mars video which I think is similar). What do you think about these concepts vs. the semi-occluded type of exercises? I suppose they all go hand-in-hand in order to achieve a balanced voice!

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks so much for following my content over the years! I really appreciate it! I still use edge and vocal fry all the time with students, I guess I just haven't mentioned them in my videos yet. I have shifted my thinking somewhat about edge, Brett is my maestro and I am always second in command when in the room with him, but for me personally I have noticed that edge often gets people in a perpetual state of pressing the cords together, not always, but it is often the case, however if someone is really lacking in closure I still use over compressed sounds temporarily to help strengthen the coordination. But I have found that Semi occlusions can often get you there without ever having to over compensate which is one reason i love them so much. We are all very individual and there is no one size fits all so i use all the tools at my disposal depending on what I think the students needs are. Cheers!

    I want to sing in my mix. But I cant. Im trying to do these kinds of exercises like "mum mum and ney ney" but I still cant do it. Is it because Im not breathing properly? I mean you know like from the diaphragm? Do I need to start learning from the beginning again? From the basics in order for me to get the mix right? And also when I sing Im struggling for high notes and Im straining. I want to fix that. Is all that related to my breathing technique?

It's weird because I can slide through the whole range without a break, but it feels and sounds like your pulling chest demonstration rather than free and easy. Is it possible to do that and never actually be in mix?

  • @bogdan_5463
    @bogdan_5463 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great lessons, I've been trying to find a way to stop pulling chest for quite a lot of time (anything above D4-E4 is painful to sing and listen). Exercises that you show and explanations that you provide seem to be the only things that resonated with my singing experience and gave me more understanding about what it should feel like. Good job!
    By the way does it make sense to build your entire singing session (lets say one hour) around various semi-occluded exercises (sirens, staccato humming and so on)?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    HELP! I'm able to mix, even though it's pretty unstable at this point. I have a pretty powerful chest voice, and I have a good understanding of my voice and how everything feels.
    However, if I train mixed voice for more than 30 minutes, the next day my voice feels tired - it has a "dry" feeling to it. Fatigue, strain, whatever you want to call it. Why does this happen? Am I maybe not supporting properly from the diaphragm? I feel that the power might be coming from my throat/head when I enter into mix. Sometimes, I can place the resonance in such a way that it actually hurts my ears. It's like I trap the sound in my head. Is that normal?

    Hey Tyler! I'm curious...what is your vocal range before you found your mixed voice? And what did you(if you did at all) classify your voice type as before and after you found your mixed voice? I'm 17 years old and have a range of E2-A4. It's funny because I THINK I can mix very well starting from C4 as it sounds overall brighter than my lower notes. However, starting from E4 all the way to A4 I have this great need to pull chest just to hit those notes without cracking. I might still be able to mix there but very chest dominant. I can't seem to find the perfect balance between chest and head starting from E4. I know I can go higher than G4/A4 because when I'm fully warmed up I can hit multiple G4s very easily but every time I try to go higher, I just crack. That's the downside of pulling chest I guess. Anyway, I hope to discover my mixed voice high up in my range and hopefully, hopefully be able to sing all the male pop songs on radio nowadays haha!

    Tyler this video is very informative and you sound great! I've tried this myself but have a question on if I'm doing it correctly. Is there a way to tell if I'm doing mixed voice correctly but perhaps am a baritone and therefore that's why I'm getting stuck around the G#4 vs seeing if I'm a tenor who is doing mixed voice incorrectly and still holding on to too much chest voice and getting stuck at G#4? If I am a baritone, should I concentrate on making my mixed voice up to a G#4/a couple notes higher as best as I can and not concentrate on trying to go up to C5s and D5s in mixed voice?

It feels like a step forward from lip bubbles for me and I love it, especially for a warm up. But when I try to bring out the full voice, I either fall to a pulled chest/yell or disconnect to head voice, depending where I'm at in the range. I'm singing Bass, my range is from E2 - E4 with struggeling, C4 without. In a few weeks it will be E1 or lower to C4, found a stupidly easy way to go deep and sound good with it(for anyone who want to find out how it's called subharmonic bass singing) but with any exercise i could find i found my head voice then tried to slide up and down again. At least i got up, then i tried to go down again and had a disconnected voice

    Hey Tyler! Baritone here with a full voice range of E2/F2-A4 and a head voice range all the way till F#5-G5. Just wondering one thing - how high should typically a baritone be able to mix (I know some baritones can go very high, but I am just wondering what the general case is)?
    Thing is, I can sing above D4-Eb4 just fine and have done several low tenor numbers till around F#4-G#4, but even though I am really supporting, the sound feels like it just goes on until I run out of breath instead of being stuck in the throat, and I can go at full volume with it if I want to. Is that what you mean by the mix itself?

      @disturbed4everluke 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'd say most peoples have a mix of around 6 notes to maybe an octave if really developed. so take your break...for a baritone maybe around c#4-d4 and add about 6 notes. so maybe a really developed mix for you would be around a b4 or if you're gifted maybe c#5 d5. some people have a mix of a full octave (and then there is of course really heady mixes that are indistinguishable from head voice.) but it's pretty rare...i bet you have a little bit of room, most well developed baritones can sing around the g4 and just a bit more without the mix so i bet you have room to access your mix and expand a bit. i'm a heavy tenor or light baritone and have been working on my mix for a couple months and can get up to the c#5 (sometimes not on the spot like when doing gigs or band practice...takes me a few tries sometimes to find the correct vocal coordination) the tricky thing about the mix is most people do belt with a little mix...if you're a good singer you will support and thin out your chest voice into your head...and that's technically a mix...but there is a gradient of mixes...technically almost every single note you sing is a mix...as it has some head resonance in it...but that's of course not what is meant by mix. so to answer your question i'm sure you're singing well as you said it feels good but there is probably still some room in that mix...you may be at like a 15% mix but the sound this guy is getting that almost sounds operatic i'd say is atleast a quarter mix... it's very strong sounding but is very thinned out.

    Hello Tyler i am really listening to every word you say and tottaly appying that.Your vocals are fucking amazing and i cant believe you dont have some covers of yours !!! I wanted to ask you few things.I have gone thrue singing successs and then Ken Tamplin..Ken Taplin help me understand more mix cause he is showing and apply him singing in his audio warm ups..but then i figured out he is going to much pulling chest voice and in the end while i was doing that i hurt my voice nd my sound in the middle section,high and everywere was to strong ,it was much harder cause my color and position was already dark and to chest..and you can here by the sound of tone that his voice its not resonate in those high tones many times ..Anyway there is one guy from group Mic Lowry that has very high and very strong voice he pulls up a lot of chest voice and i really trying to configure my voice like that....Anyway i wanted to ask you next thing. Beforr i go to that strong high mix tone,how you suggest to warm up first ? Not so strong full voice mix the begging ? How long should i go with head light mix before i start pulling strong mix and higher chest..i always wantrd strong high chest voice up,but that is very hard to sustain and it sound to loud..since you explained and shows that you can have strong mix sound and still not sound like bieber or similar(i dont like that,i like strong male voice high )....So please tell me about the warm up..and tell me what you think about this guy and what technique and voice type he is using.Delialah is his name there ! Does your warm up have singing in audio ,to follow your sound voczl ? Or its just scale ?

      Ye you are right warm up light and easy! Work your way up to the fuller sounds. Hahah yes mix doesn't have to sound like Bieber that is true. Not sure what warm ups you do already but I would do some easy humming, Lip rolls, head voice, puffy cheek and then start to check in on the fuller sounds and see where your voice is.

    Hey Tyler, thank you for all advices very helpfull :). I was wondering if mix voice is a nasaly sound. Because when i try, i can feel resonance into my nose. In chest or head voice, i can control nasal or oral sound but not on mix (impossible to have a complete oral sound). Am I in the good way ? Thank you for your help :)

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No it's not a nasally sound. If you plug your nose the sound shouldn't change. However the boney hard palate is the floor of the nasal cavity and the nasal cavity is formed by a boney structure, these bones do vibrate and in some people it can be quite noticeable, these vibratory sensations can be felt even when the velum is closing off the nasal cavity. Now twang on the other hand is definitely present in the mix voice but twang is made right above the cords in the epilarynx tube not in the nose. I know it's super confusing and many "experts" have dogmatic opinions about it, but in the way I teach it the mix is not a nasal quality. I hope that helps.

      I know Singing Success has a few videos of me on their website and I believe Brett Manning has a few videos of me still on his Facebook page and those are from 2013 which I was going through training for a few years before even those were filmed but unfortunately before that I don't have any videos. I promise you I did not always have the range and power that I do today, or possibly I did but I just did not know how to access it or use it effectively. I could always sing loud but I would yell in chest voice and it felt like my voice reached a ceiling.

But when i do it, i only can do till G4 and start G#4 it forced me to go with head voice.. I'm a baritone btw.. Is it normal? 😩 Im not sure if it mix voice more to head or just plain head voice 😩 G4 sometime kinda shaky if i hold it, maybe i need to build more muscle.. Train more so i can go higher? 🤔 I know its not magically happen in 1 day.. Im just wondering is it normal for baritone mix till G4 only? Or can go higher? Or maybe i just the type of baritone who need to use head voice after G4.. 🤣

      I think you should train the way you want to sing. I think incorporating mix voice to any regime is a great idea but if you want to sing chest voice on high notes then you should probably continue to work on that, however that is not something I teach, but it's also not apart of the way I want to sing.
