    MUST READ before viewing 📺
Today is about mystery places that are weird, inhospitable, cruel, hot, loud, dusty. It is the presence the people makIng the difference. It’s about the dignity of the human spirit and honestly, the mystery to me is how so many people survive with such grace in such circumstances.
    The island of Nauru 🇳🇷
A tiny island you’ve never heard of yet was once the richest country in the world. Excuse me what? Why haven’t we ever heard of it? So, it was like the Venice of the South Pacific? Well, yes, it was. But unfortunately, went down like a one hit wonder, or the lottery winner who won 150 million dollars and squandered all the money after 2 years.
Yep. So now it’s still a tiny island paradise without the paradise. Because tourists don’t come either. The two hotels are worse than that platform hotel we saw last week.
They are trying to improve the situation by bringing in experts to teach them things like growing crops. The climate is mild, they have their trucks to drive around the island over and over, hopefully the islanders will learn self sufficiency eventually.
    Zhongdong China 🇨🇳
90 people live in houses built inside a cave.
Why? It seems, long ago, their ancestors wanted to hide from robbers. I still don’t get it. It’s a mystery. Habit? Custom? Tradition? Who knows.
    Egypt 🇪🇬
Limestone mining has been around for thousands of years. Think pyramids.
Blindingly white, excruciatingly dusty, hot like a furnace.
45° C heat (the doc team could only endure for a couple of hours) It’s pays $6 a day (considered a decent wage there) but honestly, it’s a mystery how anyone could do this job for more than a day. Yet they do and will continue to do so to provide for their familIes. “To sustain my family, I would take on even worse jobs.”
    São Paolo, Brazil 🇧🇷
‘Your garbage is my luxury’ is stenciled on the side of of Rafael’s carroca.
His job: collecting recyclable garbage in his district.
It makes him about $400 a month to support his family of 10. They’re all proud of him. He is proud of his family. They are all just lovely.
Guangzhou, China 🇨🇳 Urban jungle and a truly aweful example of what ‘city‘ can mean.
An 4 lane roundabout now encircles a 9 story apartment building that was there first, where families lived first but the gov decided they all had to move out, and didn’t bother to supply these families with adequate substitute accommodation.
People were asked to move out into 30 sq meter cubicles.
One tenant is not having it. He is holding out. With his family. They can’t be evicted. It’s a standoff. He will stay until he gets what he wants. I am doubtful he will. In the meantime, hellish noise, dilapidated building. Plaster falling, pipes bursting. Yet he will not give up.
The mystery is how these people survive. Dignity of the human spirit.
    Enjoy!
It’s Friday. Go for a swim 🏊‍♂️ or have a picnic with friends and family. 🍒 and Remind yourself how lucky you are. I sure do. Wow.

Disappointed the Nauru predicament is presented as entirely their own doing, and that the 70+ years of exploitation by British, German, and Australian colonists, wasn't addressed. EG: The way the British Phosphate Company methodically destroyed the island, property by property, paying less than 1% of the profits of the phosphate to the native landowners whose property was rendered useless thereafter. Nauru is a very sad place.
      Otherwise interesting stuff!

With funds from the World Bank, they can embark on massive land reclamation project to increase the size of the country and turn it into a tourist paradise. This would generate jobs and revenue for the country. By the way, where do they bury their dead ones? This is a place worth visiting.

I think this kind of video is very important and wishes that more people would watch them, instead of other videos of less value. They are important for several reasons, like putting pressure on them (governments, communities, landowners, etc.) who treat people bad and to make people all over the world aware of the circumstances some of the brothers and sisters are living under, or rather, have to endure, while some of us believe that we have a difficult situation, when "we" actually live in an incredibly privileged part of the world with excesses of everything, except for love, maybe... Often I feel that it is strange that people who live the hardest lives anyway seem to be much happier than we are (I judge from photos and documentaries I have seen). I think those videos are fascinating and fantastic!

Phosphate mining was once the only show in town, and now, in its absence, all that this dominion can hand to its suborned people is an incredibly brief lifespan thru' poor education, junk diet and non-existent basic road safety rules. The middle east has slightly more going for it, tho' it too will still struggle to re-purpose itself when the world turns away from its black gold. As always, things will return to what they were - ie a few will remain rich & the rest will be enslaved one way or another, scratch around in the dust and sell their body parts to Americans or university laboratories, prob both
