I have been to Alcatraz twice. It’s still open, I believe, for tours. The last time I went, there was a prison guard there that had written a book about his life on the island and gave us information on daily life. He along with his wife and children lived there. I believe he said all the guards-CO’s lived there and the children were ferried to San Francisco every week day for school. This was in the early 80’s that I went. Not knowing I would one day be a CO in the future. They did not have near the sophistication as this place at that time. These prisoners need to be there. I haven’t been to San Francisco in many years. It used to be one of my favorite cities. Not a good city any longer. I loved the Wharf and the beautiful old homes on the hilly roads. It was safe to walk anywhere. Really sad.
Imagine living in a society where things didn't have to be locked up at your local CVS/Walgreens. Where people weren't being brutally attacked on subways, carjackings were nonexistent, and you can leave your doors unlocked during the day❤

It’s only an option if you actually never intend to release them. If there is a chance of releasing them this type of prison will either make them a guarantee reoffender or completely useless to society. However I do enjoy watching this knowing I’ll never run into any of them.

Regarding UK prisons, TVs and games consoles are a thing there BUT they’re considered privileges for good behaviour and with that, they can be removed or restricted if the prisoner is not conforming to prison rules/standards. They’re not given out during orientation. Also, a bored prisoner is much more likely to act out or actively become violent, especially if they’re in for a serious offence and/or serving a long sentence. TVs are an easy way for the prison to have prisoners entertained, and therefore less likely to cause issues to the skeleton prison staff that often have far too much on their plates. Source: several of my family members are prison officers.
