1967 Honda CB77 Super Hawk - Restoration - Part 15

  • It's done! After 5 1/2 years the restoration of my 1967 Honda CB77 Super Hawk is complete. The experience and education I gained from this project was worth every bit of the frustration it caused. I'm still waiting on the license plate to arrive so I haven't been able to put more than a mile or so on it. I'm crossing my fingers that the plate shows up soon so I can properly break the bike in before we run out of warm weather.

    Amazing job! VERY inspiring...I have the same bike (late 64/65 Blue/Silver) that I'm sorting and your videos have helped IMMENSELY!! To your carb/fuel leak issue the material of the carbs/fittings of that period were not the greatest to begin with...sort of porous/rough especially at the ends like the fittings, and then you add 40+ years to that and voila! So fiber washers was absolutely the way to go for getting those mating surfaces sealed off. Thanks again for sharing your journey with us!

      Thanks! So far the Permatex aviation gasket stuff seems to be working but I'm going to order a fiber gasket assortment to try as well. Especially for the float bowl drain screw. I've gotten in the habit of draining the bowls on a bike if I know it's going to sit for more than a couple of weeks and re-sealing the screws with gasket maker each time would be a pain.
      I've also though about getting some 90 degree brass fittings and eliminating the old style fittings all together. It's just a matter of finding the correct thread/barb combination.

      @@michaelsams450 You're welcome. I agree, emptying the tank and draining the gas if not operating for a while is inconvenient but good to do. I do the same thing for an all-original 78 Yamaha Chappy that I restored...in addition to gas out, I squirt Silicone spray through the carb and petcock just to keep the older parts happy...especially the vacuum actuated petcock, which works well but can get cranky if not cleaned / lubed

    Amazing restoration on the Super Hawk Michael! These bikes were considered the "Hot set-up" in the 60's and Honda made some race kit parts you could buy at the time. I ride a '67 Scrambler, my first bike and that 305 is a great motor. This bike has taken me all over the San Francisco Bayarea and down the coast on Highway 1 down to Southern Cal. and never skipped a beat. I live in Portland, Oregon now and this bike is discovering new roads up here in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for sharing your story!

    I just picked up a project CB77, and came across your video series while searching for restoration videos, I plan to go back and watch them all, your bike came out great!!!!
    And what a coincidence, judging by some of your other videos (Beaver Car show, mines and meadows), we might live in the same area (Beaver county PA, I'm in the Hopewell/Aliquippa area).

      Congrats on the CB77, it's a great bike and they're getting harder and harder to find. I'm still fine tuning mine but it's been a ton of fun to ride so far. If you haven't already I highly recommend joining VintageHondaTwins.com. The group there has a ton of knowledge and they helped me through a couple tricky situations with my restoration.

    Thanks for the video, it was very informative and inspiring! I myself am restoring a 1965 CB72 and I have brought the camera out a few times in case one day I am brave enough to put up a video of my experience! Meanwhile I am more than happy to watch content such as yours!,

      Thanks for the kind words. I'm still self-conscious about recording what I'm doing but I just tell myself that if people don't like it, they don't have to watch it. Involving the kids keeps things interesting. They are a little less interested lately so I'm trying to make the most of the time they do spend in the garage. Good luck on the CB72.

    My Honda 400 four Super sport frame was powder coated over 20 years ago and still looks like new, no chips or peeling, it must have been done right. 🇬🇧👍

      Based on the feedback I've gotten regarding the powder coating issues I think it's safe to assume that the problem was with the company I used.

    Michael, did you get the tank panels out to have re-chromed or were those replacement panels? If you did send them out who did you use for the re-plating?

      I had them re-chromed by a company in Santa Ana, CA called Classic Chrome Plating/Classic Components. I believe they went out of business. It's a shame too because their prices were really good.

      The tank side covers are the originals that came on the bike. I had them re-chromed a few years ago.

    Believe Me Brother powder coat is quite a bit more durable than just paint, that guy that did your powder coat I'm sure did not do a good prep job, it really sucks brother because I don't want you to have a negative outlook on Powder Coating because it is really good stuff actually as long as you're powder coater does a good job of course because it all comes down to the powder coater himself and his prep work that determines how well the powder coat job will come out

      I think you're right about the guy I used not doing a proper job. My experience seems to be the opposite of most of what I've heard about powder coat durability. If I go this route again I'll certainly use a different service. Thanks for watching!

    Michael, you have done a fantastic job at restoring this bike! I know (think) you are from the surrounding area of Pittsburgh as well as I am. So I have two question that maybe you could answer. I have been looking for a Honda 1967 or 1968 CB77, 305 that needs restored. If you have any leads now or in the near future please let me know. How do you find yours? In the video it looks like you have the equipment and did the media blasting yourself, do you own this because you do this as a hobby and restore many bikes so it has been cost effective that way or would it have been cost effective enough just for this project? Thanks

      Hi Pat, yes I'm located in the greater Pittsburgh area. It took me about 2 years of searching before I found this particular CB77. I found it on Craigslist. I had to drive out to Dayton, OH to get it. My best piece of advise: expand your search area. At the time, I had bookmarked the Craigslist pages for each of the cities I was willing to drive to. Each morning I would click through the listings on each city's page to see if anything caught my eye. It was a pain but in the end I found what I was looking for. I've had mixed results with Facebook Marketplace but these days it seems like a ton of people use it so check there as well. If you're not a member of the VJMC I would recommend joining. There are bikes listed for sale in the back of their magazine. Forums like VintageHondaTwins.com can be a useful source for leads from time to time as well.
      I did own a media blast cabinet for several years. It was nice to have on hand to clean parts but when we moved earlier this year I didn't bring it along. It was cheap and leaked like crazy. I'd like to get a new one some day but right now I don't have an immediate use for it. For me the convenience was definitely worth the $300 or so that I paid for it. I've had a local powder coater do some sandblasting for me on larger parts but they stuff they use is far too aggressive for anything other than steel. For aluminum parts of even prepping hardware for plating you really need to use fine glass beads.

    Is the motor # mach frame? Or 300 one way or the other!

      As far as I know the engine number rarely matches the frame number. They are usually within a couple thousand of each other.

    If is rich slides need to be so the slides are open the back of the carbs!!

      You are correct, I had them installed backwards when I was first tuning the bike in the summer which caused it to run too rich in one of the earlier videos.

      @@michaelsams450 I had cb500 with four pipes I raced AFM club races 12 times. I told my Father I would start in back of the pack didn't want to crash! That was blast, I could make up to maybe 5th. 25 bikes or so. I got married and stoped racing, our first bike was 1980 GS1000, it go tires so fast we could we sold it. The we got a Honda yours. I rode that bike for a few years. Craig Vetter was having contest at laguna seca I got 100 miles gallon!!That was nothing some bikes why more than that!!
