  • In this video we finally get the tank painted, and it only takes 3 attempts to get it right. I used Eastwood’s single stage urethane in Boulevard Black. The paint gun I used is a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 FLG-670 with a 1.3 fluid tip. In my first attempt I ended up spraying way outside of the temperature window of the activator as the morning sun rapidly warmed up my DIY paint booth to a toasty 104 degrees F. by time applied the 3rd coat. This resulted in a lot of dry spray and excessive orange peel.
I had to wet sand the tank to flatten out the paint and made my second attempt on a much cooler morning. The lower temperature solved the first problem but I ended up with a lot of solvent pop in the finish the second time around. This could have been due to a number of factors but most likely I was applying the paint to heavily and not allowing enough flash time between coats.
So, I wet sanded the tank again and made my 3rd attempt. This time around I made sure to wipe the tank down with wax and grease remover the night before to eliminate that as a possible cause of the solved pop. I also made sure that my gun pressure was to spec according to the DeVilbiss specs. I also only applied a single coat since in total the tank already had 5 previous coats on it. Fortunately there were only a handful of solvent pop marks that could easily be sanded and buffed out.
After the tank had a few days to cure I wet sanded it with 2000 grit sand paper and used Mother’s Rubbing Compound, Finishing Polish, and Synthetic Wax to bring the paint to a show quality finish. This was my first attempt at a paint job of this caliber and despite seemingly endless setbacks I’m thoroughly pleased with the results.

I'm with you on that. Unfortunately in this case the original paint was hidden under 3 previous paint jobs.
