This song is about a man who is in death row waiting to die and he’s speaking to the chaplain and asking him to take a message to his wife. It’s a sad and tragic song as only The Bee Gees can write and perform. In the 60´s both Robin and Barry would share leads and Barry always used his chest voice in that time period. They are musical geniuses without a doubt. They are very underrated and unfortunately most people are not even interested in listening to them. Thank you for The Bee Gees reaction, love The Bee Gees.

As a young lad of 16, I used to bump into the brothers Gibb on a regular basis as they lived in a flat above the shops on the Watford Way London across the road from where I worked. They would always say hello. They came across as just ordinary down to earth Aussies ps I'm 72 now

I think the line 'one more hour and my life will be through' is a pretty strong hint it's going to be a sad song.

Robin and Mo are teenagers! Teenagers with that kind of vocal maturity. I have to tell you. This song came out when I was in 6th grade. The subject matter gave me the heebie geebies. "Well I did it to him. Now it's my turn to die." Yes, "Green Grass of Home" thing. I couldn't handle it, and barely can now. Only Robin could make this work. To me, the backing harmony is like a funeral dirge. I'm sure they intended it that way. They left nothing to chance. I appreciate it more now. Their voices together send me to the stratosphere. Mo is on the bass (white) and Vince Melouney played lead guitar. How much I love Vince is another story. LOL.

I grew up with this great group & had a lot of their albums. Most people react to their disco era. Nice to see you doing some of their early music. My favorites are from the 60's-70's. Some of their early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "The Singer Sang His Song", "Lonely Days", "Melody Fair", "First Of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

Would you please react to "Ellan Vannin" with the King's College Choir although Robin was very frail and unwell. Regardless his voice was still there and the song beautiful! Other great Robin leads, "Black Diamond" and "Country Lanes". Can't get enough of that voice. An up tempo song he did was "Fallen Angel". He did do songs that weren't all sad ballads.
Robin's idea for "Gotta get a message" was about a convicted man who killed his wife's lover. Mo and Barry didn't like his idea but he insisted it was a love song so then they agreed.
Mo was on the white bass. They said songs just came to them out of thin air as if already written and somehow sent to them telepathically. They heard music in everything from noise on a rickety bridge (Jive Talkin) to airplane engines (I started a Joke).
A lot of generations didn't treat them well. Jealousy plus disco was labelled as black and gay music. How DARE white boys sing R&B! Not their fault. Ironically people like Elton John and Brian May loved their music as did the Beatles.

Hi, Susie Q: I just watched Ellan Vannin for the first time and it is a very emotional video. His last words in the song, "I'm going back to my childhood days once more" really hit me . And then, soon after, a blonde haired girl with a beautiful smile really topped it off. I had his album, Robin's Reign on the ATCO label and I absolutely loved it. I totally agree with you; Country Lanes is one of the best examples of his amazing voice as well as the very early I Am The World. He did not look well in this video. Thank you for sharing this with all of us; I'm glad that I read your comment. I really loved their older stuff mostly. By the time I had purchased Spirits Having Flown, I had 21 Bee Gees albums to give you an idea. I sort of drifted away from them as 1978 rolled around but still loved them. When I heard For Whom The Bell Tolls for the first time around ten years ago, I thought my old group was back again. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It's nice to chat with you. FG

    • @susieq9801
      @susieq9801 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@festidious2644 - Yes, "Ellan Vannin" really got to me. The "Childhood days once more" really struck home as well. He had recently lost his twin (Spencer said he was never the same after that) and he knew he was not long for this world himself. When he turns his back and walks away to the back of the church it was like he was leaving us forever. He was saying goodbye. I can't watch without crying.
"Rings around the moon" does it for me too. I can't even listen to "Sydney". He became so nostalgic for his youth and the happy times with his brothers. As we age, we all become nostalgic.
He loved the "Country Lanes" of his beautiful home in Thame. He never could have dreamed of living in that home surrounded by the British history that he so loved coming from the impoverished rough streets of post war Manchester. It's nice to think maybe he's still wandering in those gardens.
      All the best FG. ☺

I read that once Barry discovered his falsetto, the producers pushed for Barry to be the lead vocal, as they thought his looks were more appealing to girls/women! Shame on them; I think this is what started the on and off rift between Robin and Barry! Also, it has been said that Robin had the highest natural "chest voice" of the 3 of them, although they are all capable of fabulous falsetto's.

“First of May” by the Bee Gees. A hit from 1968 andfeatured in the movie “Melody”. Then listen to Lulu singing it live on her TV show. She is joined by a man she married and divorced thirty years before- Mr. Maurice Gibb. Sweet and romantic and nostalgic. You will cry. In 1968 everyone in Britain watched their storybook wedding. Millions glued to their sets. Great that they became friends just a few years before his death. Sad and Sweet!

At the end of the disco era of the 70s , beginning of the 80s the Bee Gees were treated very badly. Radio stations refused to play thier music . Thier records got destroyed in an anti disco riot. No one wanted to be accociated with them after the 70s .
Thier first bee gees album of the 80s bombed so the Bee Gees were forced to not do anything as the Bee Gees for a long time. They ended up writing for other artists and recording solo albums
Barry recorded a solo album In 1984 called Now Voyager. Which Is an incredible album and Robin recorded 3 solo albums throughout the 80s.
The Bee gees did some songs for the Staying Alive soundtrack, the sequel to Saturday night fever. Then the Bee gees returned In 1987 with You win again.
You win again went to number 1 all around the world 🌎 except for America who still ignored thier music and considered them only a disco band . It was only the song titled One from the album One in 1989 they reached the top 10 in America again but after that in the early 90s they were ignored again they truly didn't fully get accepted back to the music industry until 1997 when they started receiving many lifetime achievement awards and an induction to the rock and roll hall of fame
Thier 1997 album titled Still waters was thier first album to sell extremely well since 1979. Very sad the way they were treated after the 70s . As a hardcore Bee gees fan myself it really upsets me this happened to them because of thier massive success in the disco era

Love these guys! In 1971 they received their 1st Grammy for: "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." In 1972 they had a few minor hits, but then hit a rut. They had 3 flops in a row and were playing in clubs, and only playing better gigs here and there. Then came along "Jive Talking" in 1975!! Its rhythm was modelled after the sound their car made crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway. This was really the first time Barry sang his signature falsettos. And the rest is history. I love their 1971 hit "Lonely Days", which was a very unique, for them, rock sound!

While I love the Bee Gees music from every era of their careers, I will always be partial to the disco era. They were The Kings Of Disco just like Donna Summer was The Queen Of Disco". Anyway, I noticed there are 2 of my favorite disco era Bee Gees songs that you haven't reacted to yet that I'd love for you to try. They are "Love So Right" and "Love You Inside Out". When disco died, the Bee Gees lost a lot of fans who blamed them for "all that disco crap". They stopped performing for a while and wrote hit songs for other artists. Then they recorded some of their best music during the 80s and 90s but it wasn't as successful as it deserved to be; a hang over from the taint of disco. However, I don't think they regretted their foray into disco. It took them from rich to mega rich.

The early Bee Gees are the very best. WORDS is probably my favorite but choosing a favorite is like choosing a favorite child.
To Love Somebody. Daughter(sorry I don't remember your name.) you would like that song because Mo can be heard a little more especially at the end where he sings "OH, OH, NO!!! You don't know what it's like to love Somebody the way I love you." So much feeling in it. Love Massachusetts with Robin. I Started a Joke is wonderful. Holiday, Robin again.
I agree with how cute they were when they young...and MO had hair. LOL I think he was in his 20's when he started losing his hair. Poor baby. I read Barry was 21 and the twins were 18 when
Bee Gee's came on the scene in America. That was when I was about 12 or 13. I had a crush on all of them but I couldn't decide who was cuter Barry or Vince, the guitar player. Then Vince's Vìsa ran out and had to go back to Australia so I didn't have to worry anymore. :)

Boy brings back memories. I used to listen to this song my sophomore year in high school. My cousin's band used to sing this. Barry didn't used his falsetto until 1975 on Night On Broadway song.

sir Barry Alan Crompton Gibb, the main driving factor and basically front-man for Bee-Gees, is third all time for the number 1 hits written. He also purchased my Boy's home, Johnny Cash's, after Johnny passed away (I was born myself very near here).

Baby Gap is correct in her speculation of the song and its story line. The Bee Gees 1968 single, “I’ve Gotta Get a Message To You” has a very different story than most love songs. The lyrics tell the story of a man who is in the electric chair, awaiting his execution as he begs the prison chaplain to deliver a final message to his wife. According to Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, the man is in jail for the murder of his wife’s lover. Robin notes, “this is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There’s a certain urgency about it. Nevertheless, there is one thing that Barry and Robin never wrote that has since puzzled fans - what the message was! OK ladies, when do we get LOVE YOU INSIDE AND OUT, some Andy Gibb songs and Barry's collaborations with Ms. Streisand? In any case "Gappers" you're doing a great job and there is nothing to be guilty about.

Thank you Unca Buzz! This was a tragic love story by The Bee Gees. I like how they left “the message” a mystery and up to us to figure out or write ourselves. A collab song with Barbara is in the works ☺️

Wow, Bee Gees music reactions are back! ))) Great choice, ladies. You may as well check the live versions of this song - from "Here at Last bee Gees Live" 1977 LP or from Nelson Mandela Benefit gala concert of 1988, the song is the same, but the treatment from them as mature artists is more confident and modern )
And if you want another sad early Bee Gees song (with a video), where Barry and Robin trade vocals, please check "Walking Back to Waterloo" off their 1971 LP )) Good luck )
