I’m 73, and The Bee Gees have been my world! My actual favorite was Robin! Tho Barry was gorgeous! But no one in this world will ever have the voice of Robin Gibb!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm almost 63, building a playlist of all the good old stuff, this song got my attention and added it instantly. Funny thing is I just don't recall this song as a 14 year old. With age comes appreciation for the greatness of the songwriters and top 40 artists of the rock boom era. Plus I can listen now with lyrics to understand all of the words that I've had wrong for 50 years.
All of my favorite bands and artists have appeared in the midnight special. I wish I could have gone to the shows. It was in California and I lived in NYC 🗽
According to Barry, this is the song where he discovered his high falsetto in a scream near the end of this song. After the discovery they had 6 number ones in a row.
You forgot the 90s, they had fabulous LPs in the 90s. Even though American radio didn't recognize them since “79”, they were recognized in other countries.
It was a very popular show back in the early 70s. This song was where the falsetto started. But on the show Maurice sang the adlibs and the falsetto but on the studio album Barry sings it
The Midnight Special was a late Friday night( Technically Saturday morning 1am original time slot )music show with various artists . I love the contrast of the low and high vocals on this etc . Another winner from the band on Bee Gee week, and definitely another winning performance from Mee Gee!!!
Yes! I remember it well - and this was a particularly great performance.. another one was "Come & get Your Love" by Redbone.. when they came out with their Native American roots on display - pretty surprising, but they just KILLED that performance... lol
It was for us that got bored at the 'Club', and went home and watched and heard the same 'stuff', but you could get loaded-er (new word) for free. loved it.
Midnight Special was THE music show before MTV came on the scene. Maurice did a lot of the high fills onstage that Barry sang in the studio recordings. Please check out 'Alone' for another super-falsetto experience! Maurice hits notes singing 'just the beat of a lonely heart' that sounds more flute-like than human!
Midnight Special was a hugely popular variety show that featured various artists. It was important when a newer artist was featured because as far as I know everyone under 40 watched it.
The Midnight special was a show on TV late night on Saturday. And they had ALL the top Rock and pop acts of the day, performing live. I believe it got replaced by Saturday night live.
I love your journey down the rabbit hole and your reactions are soooo heartfelt. The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced). From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too th-cam.com/video/7niXSh7vWRI/w-d-xo.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: th-cam.com/video/WH_j90fCIk4/w-d-xo.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out th-cam.com/video/vfHUS5Mf00Q/w-d-xo.html. And from the 1990's the simple song Blue Island live in an accoustic version: th-cam.com/video/162GlAEpfrY/w-d-xo.html. Andy was kind of Barry's mini me, about half a foot shorter and 12 years younger but they were the only lefties of the family. However, his voice was nowhere near as broad in range or as strong as Barry's. As producer Alby Galuten said in the book "Tales of the brothers Gibb "Andy's falsetto was nowhere near Barry's." Andy had a lower, huskier, sound to his voice and his range was not as big as Barry's. I personally always thought his voice was much better suited to songs of his first album, Flowing Rivers. Andy died of myocarditis - which is an inflammation of the heart - on March 10, 1988, 5 days after his 30th birthday. His heart had been weakened by his drug addiction over the years which, by the way, was also the main reason for his split from Victoria Principal. He also had a congenital heart problem that was later also discovered in Barry and Barry's second son Ashley. Nights On Broadway was a groundbreaking important song for the Bee Gees because it was the first song where Barry tried out and began using his falsetto (Hi Pitched) signature voice. It set the stage for their huge megahits during the Disco era. At the end of the song you will hear him break out and start singing that way. If you listen to the Saturday Night Fever Bee Gee songs you will hear him use it again and again in their songs. You had live through it to know what a big deal the Saturday Night Fever songs were.
Awesome that you love and appreciate the Bee Gees too... IMHO they are the greatest band of all time. So many hits and great songs. They also wrote so many hit songs for other artists. Have you heard their song Fanny Be Tender? If not, please listen to it and post the reaction video of you listening to it. It's my favorite Bee Gee song. Legendary Music Producer Quincy Jones said it's one of his favorites and one of the greatest songs ever.
They are not just talented. They are legendary brothers that harmonize to perfection. They work harder in writing and performing than just about everyone!
Great reaction. There is a one minute clip on YT showing them singing a portion of this song in 1997 at their Las Vegas One Night Only performance. It is a totally different arrangement.... amazing and highlights Mo's vocal range. For me he was the hidden gem of the group. He was really coming into his own at the end of his life. They were all simply fantastic as was their younger brother Andy.
We waited all week to watch the Midnight Special, followed by the Don Kirshner Rock Concert! Had to sneak out of bed since my bedtime was earlier. It was the bomb. Otherwise, unless you were lucky enough to have a band come to your town, and you had the money & a ride to get a ticket, you didn't see your idles! So glad you are enjoying MUSIC and not just canned beats.
Their range, harmony and song writing skills are second to none. Musical geniuses. The Brothers Brilliant never disappoint. Love Barry’s chest voice here, Mo nailing that falsetto and rocking that bass and Robin’s velvety vibrato!
WHAT YOU'RE FEELING IS WHAT WE WERE FEELING ALL THOSE YEARS AGO. I GUESS IT SHOWS THAT A GOOD SONG WILL ALWAYS BE A GOOD SONG NO MATTER WHEN YOU HEAR IT DARLIN'? GOOD REACTION KIDDO, I'LL BE WATCHING....
Girl! I'm from this time and this is one of my favorite songs from the Bee Gees. You need to hear more of their songs because you will love even more songs. Trust me on this!!!!
Mo sang Alto in this song I loved when I got to hear him. Mo sung lead in "Closer Than Close" and ",Man in the Middle". He wrote both songs. He sung in his natural voice. All 3 could sing in Alto. I just think it's a shame we didn't get to hear more of Mo. Man in the Middle was about his being an alcoholic and trying to keep peace with Barry and Robin tit tats. He actually was the man in the Middle. The song was for his wife when he got clean. It's a awesome song both songs are great!
I agree with your comments! The Bee Gees are so deeply gifted as singer-song-writers and musicians. This was from the Main Course landmark album. Midnight Special was a great weekend TV show, and Bee Gees were hosts for three of them. They were guests several other times, but did such a great job hosting, too.
@Miaaa- I absolutely love The Bee Gees. Happy 77th Birthday Barry. The only group better than them was The Beatles but thats nothing to feel ashamed about bc they were the greatest group to ever live.
Did you see the Bee Gees performance of a Beatles medley on The Midnight Specials new YT channel? If you haven't, then you're in for a real treat as it's phenomenal!🎶
If you are looking up a video and you see Midnight Special performance, watch it!! That show, along with Soul Train and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert has live performances of the greatest artists of the 70's in their prime with all of their style showing!
You would get the TV Guide magazine at the store every week. Then you’d look through it to see who was going to be on the Midnight Special that upcoming Saturday night. Rock and Soul bands didnt get to go on TV all that much, so when you saw that the Bee Gees were going to be on TV next Saturday night, it was a big deal, and you’d make sure you didn’t miss it or you might have to wait for months and months tonsee it in a rerun. No streaking, no TH-cam no DVR or DVD. It was a big deal!
The Midnight Special was awesome! Great live music, the top acts of the day, sheer talent! In other news, I’m new to your channel, but I love your reaction and your vibe! Really digging your commentary in the subtitles. I’m a new fan!
@@DoIttMiaaaa yep! That’s when he discovered he could sing in that high pitched. Their producers suggested that one of them scream while singing or vice versa. And then they started writing songs to sing in his falsetto.
@@DoIttMiaaaa - This is FAR from their "older music" They started on TV in 1960 in Australia before returning home to England. Love their 60's/early 70's stuff the most and their post disco era 80's inward. All three could sing falsetto.
I did get to see the Bee Gees and others in real time the one thing I can say about some of these great talents of my era is that when you hear a new song that there's for the very first time it's a shock and a treat and you never ever forget the first the very first time you heard one of these great songs back when they were creating all of this beautiful music
Loving your reactions. One of my FAVORITE songs by them. Best part is ... this live performance is not far off from the studio version at all. Put on the record and it will sound more or less like what you just heard. Barry really did not sing lead as much until the disco era was in full swing. Super cool to see Robin up front and Maurice with the high parts. Not what most people are used to if they only know these guys from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER etc. Barry was pretty much doing back up here (while playing guitar of course). This song has that grimy 70s funk undertone ... adds a lot of atmosphere I think.
Wow🔥🔥 this was my mom’s favorite Bee Gees song(Words was her other) I truly loved this!! It just shows The Bee Gees can sing different styles of music 🎶…Mee-Gee getting into the groove 💃🏾🪩 love it ❤️❤️🔥🔥
Good God Almighty. I came here for the reaction to the song. I love it. Then, I see ye. Jesus. You're stunningly pretty. I love that you listen to music of different genres/eras. Be lucky, Lady. From London, England.
Thanks, Miaaa! This was a great show featuring live performances from popular groups at the time.. and I LOVE this one especially - b/c I love Robin... not the usual lead singer, but my favorite.. (gotta dig those geeky 70's fashions!) and also all three of them are featured... Maurice never got enough credit... lol
You need to react to the host, Natalie Cole. Her father is the great Nat Cole. She was able to establish herself as an artist of a highly successful career in her own right. Songs like, THIS WILL BE, I'VE GOT LOVE ON MY MIND, MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY, were big hits. She even managed a video tribute to her father on his most iconic song. UNFORGETTABLE was magic. Natalie gathered musicians and people who worked with her father to collaborate with her. The best part is the two of them singing together, seemingly to each other by way of video postcard. Songs by her father include SEND FOR ME, A BLOSSOM FELL, RAMBLIN' ROSE. Enjoy
Great reaction as always. This is the song Barry discovered the falsetto, on recording he does it. Live Maurice does it wonderfully You are right all three have great voices ❤. Barry had an album in 2016 called In the now(great song), and album in 2021 called Greenfields. Could you do In the now, End of the rainbow(his song for Robin).
I’m 73, and The Bee Gees have been my world! My actual favorite was Robin! Tho Barry was gorgeous! But no one in this world will ever have the voice of Robin Gibb!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Maurice did the falsetto during this show...on the album it was Barry singing falsetto...Mo nailed the falsetto all the brothers were so talented
A young girl with very good taste.
This the song where Barry found his falsetto.
All the great groups came through the Midnight Special.
Maurice does the falsetto perfectly when they did this song live.
Yes yesss. Great ..
I agree with you Miaaaa, they are awesome and they are good in all decades they sang in.

Well it depended where you lived. It came on at midnight in Missouri.
It was for us that got bored at the 'Club', and went home and watched and heard the same 'stuff', but you could get loaded-er (new word) for free. loved it.
I saw them in concert as a teen in the late 70’s and they were electric live.
When I was a kid my parents let me stay up every Friday night to watch the Midnight Special! I loved that show!
The Bee Gees wrote over 100 top 10 hit songs for themselves and other artists
Look up midnight, special performances, and you will find some of the best live performances ever

YOURE so right!
This is their disco era, the very beginning. 1975-1979. Nights On Broadway and Jive Talkin kicked it off.
Their “Hits Medley” on Midnight Special (1975) is pretty amazing.

The Midnight Special was awesome! Great live music, the top acts of the day, sheer talent!
In other news, I’m new to your channel, but I love your reaction and your vibe! Really digging your commentary in the subtitles. I’m a new fan!
I watched it every week!😅
Who doesn’t enjoy a week of the BeeGees!
YAY!!!! This is the song where Barry found his falsetto!!! I’m glad you’ve done their older music!!!
Awesome reaction as always!!!❤❤
Found It ? It Sounded Like He's Been Singing Falsetto For Years !! What A Natural Talent , Love The Feedback . I Appreciate You Tina ♡
All three could sing falsetto.
that was maurice that sang falsetto on this song.
He had used it before as had the other brothers. He discovered he could sustain it and sing entire songs with it. @@DoIttMiaaaa
Hello Mia! Great reaction as always!😀
EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT - a concert in your living room in the 70's on "The Midnight Special" !!
I did get to see the Bee Gees and others in real time the one thing I can say about some of these great talents of my era is that when you hear a new song that there's for the very first time it's a shock and a treat and you never ever forget the first the very first time you heard one of these great songs back when they were creating all of this beautiful music
Great reaction Mia. Tom Jones with Paul Anka do an awesome cover of "Nights on Broadway" Loved watching The Midnight Special. The 70's were cool.
Love!
Such talented guys. I've always loved their songs.
This song has that grimy 70s funk undertone ... adds a lot of atmosphere I think.
bee gees you stepped into my life
Wow🔥🔥 this was my mom’s favorite Bee Gees song(Words was her other) I truly loved this!! It just shows The Bee Gees can sing different styles of music 🎶…Mee-Gee getting into the groove 💃🏾🪩 love it ❤️❤️🔥🔥
Awe Michael ☺ I Just Love That . Your Mom Has Great Taste In Music , That's For Sure . Love The Feedback , I Appreciate You ♡
bee gees king and country
Good God Almighty.
I came here for the reaction to the song. I love it.
Then, I see ye. Jesus.
You're stunningly pretty. I love that you listen to music of different genres/eras.
Be lucky, Lady.
From London, England.
youtube midnight special great acts doing their songs Live!
That bass and funky beat are awesome.
This song has a little different style that I'm used to hearing from them. Might be my favorite song by them so far. Great reaction again Mia!❤
I Was Thinking This Same Thing !! Thank You For Leaving Feedback Mike , You Are Appreciated ♡
Friday nights, at midnight, it was special
Thanks, Miaaa! This was a great show featuring live performances from popular groups at the time.. and I LOVE this one especially - b/c I love Robin... not the usual lead singer, but my favorite.. (gotta dig those geeky 70's fashions!) and also all three of them are featured... Maurice never got enough credit... lol
Watch All the old Midnight Specials... there were hundreds!!! And The Bee Gees hosted it often!!
Robin actually has the highest falsetto. BTW, he does the high falsetto harmony on "Staying Alive"
Yes it was the top names appeared. I watched it every Friday!😅
You need to react to the host, Natalie Cole. Her father is the great Nat Cole. She was able to establish herself as an artist of a highly successful career in her own right. Songs like,
THIS WILL BE,
I'VE GOT LOVE ON MY MIND,
MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY, were big hits. She even managed a video tribute to her father on his most iconic song. UNFORGETTABLE was magic. Natalie gathered musicians and people who worked with her father to collaborate with her. The best part is the two of them singing together, seemingly to each other by way of video postcard.
Songs by her father include
SEND FOR ME,
A BLOSSOM FELL,
RAMBLIN' ROSE. Enjoy
I saw her life in her later years and she was so good!
Great reaction as always. This is the song Barry discovered the falsetto, on recording he does it. Live Maurice does it wonderfully
You are right all three have great voices ❤. Barry had an album in 2016 called In the now(great song), and album in 2021 called Greenfields. Could you do In the now, End of the rainbow(his song for Robin).
He discovered he could sustain his falsetto. They all used it here and there prior to this.
