Steve Wright one of the finest Radio 2 DJs going. the funny thing is my Steve Wright in the afternoon clock has stopped thank you Steve Wright for those brilliant shows you did on Radio 1 and 2 RIP
There certainly wasn't any radio show quite like it before, certainly on this side of the pond. I was nodding in agreement at some of Gary and Tony's observations. It seemed to me back then that he was influenced by American radio and brought a flavour of that over here, with its marketing/polling trends and its emphasis on the big and the brash in the 80s - and that theme tune with the horn prominent in it. Yet he also put his own English quirky twist on it,and yes it always had that feel of a whole posse of characters being in the studio with him.
Damn. He was taken for granted. He was ubiquitous and his voice was heard coming from every workman’s radio. A huge part of British culture has departed.
Well said. My work revolved around him. Working 6-2/2-10 shifts, his show was either just starting as I got to work - which was great, or I could listen to him in the car on the way home - which was even better!
So very sad, he was just the absolute best, I never missed a show since the early 80s. When the beeb dropped him in 2022 was the biggest mistake ever. Yet he never had a bad word to say about anyone, true gentleman with legions and legions of fans. RIP mate, really going to miss you.
