  • The Benzites are a species of achievers who measure every element of personal success and are competitive by nature. However they may have a darker history than you would have thought if we look deep enough into the lore.
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!
    How to VOTE on what happens next:
    Over on the Community tab there will be a voting option for one of the two species next up on the Index!

    those breathers, there is multiple reasons for why you would notwear them like that, like for example it can easily get caught in things and be damaged or just simply being in the way, its also a highly ineffective and wastefull way to deliver the atmospheric mixture they need.

    Great video @Certifiably Ingame! I had an idea for another video topic, so I'll post it on here:
    Even though the Federation is a super advanced, Level 2 society on the Kardashev scale, they still don't have all technologies mastered yet. I therefore think it'll be interesting to create a video of technologies and abilities that the Federation doesn't appear to have the ability to do yet at certain times in the genre.
    Examples:
    1. Transwarp
    2. Regular, stable live holofeeds across the galaxy.
    3. Replicating dilithium crystals
    etc.

    My only thought is that...like, there's no way that that little tray would actually work to help them breathe. It'd just blow away if they did as much as turn their heads and the smoky gas itself seems really heavy, more likely to fall AWAY from the mouth rather than toward it.

    I don’t know if the Androgov principle is exactly the same but it reminds me of the crime show numb3rs in which they dealt with a case in which sabremetrics was theoretically applied to a human being’s performance through their life. This discovery was very controversial because whole populations that are deemed mathematically inferior could potentially suffer widespread injustice.

    The Benzite breathing apparatus is just about the dumbest piece of technology imaginable. Being directly put into the air before being administered to a Benzite's physiology, it certainly would prove dangerous to other lifeforms, which would be readily exposed to the fumes. It would also be an incredibly inefficient piece of junk to start with.
    Also, the Benzite philosophy of waiting to report findings would be against stringent Federation protocol, as it in many instances could even put the lives of crew members at risk. It's amazing there are any Benzites in the Federation at all. Imagine the outcry if a Benzite manning a tactical post encountered what only might be a Borg ship on long range sensors and avoided reporting his findings to the crew. Then five minutes later the Borg intercept them much to the surprise of everyone on board.

    This was one of the stupidest alien civilizations in Star Trek. Each person who finds a problem has to come up with a solution before telling anyone? Even if it's in a field totally outside their experience or training? They'd never make to the industrial age.

    • @detsaw23
      @detsaw23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the video explains how this might have happened. You wouldn't want someone else taking credit for your work if your life depended on maintaining your social utility score

    • @TheSuperRatt
      @TheSuperRatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@detsaw23 Such a tradition would no doubt stagnate them, so it's easy to see why they'd suddenly push for Federation membership all of a sudden. Though that's a little sus, isn't it? Instead of taking a hard look at themselves and repairing the problematic elements of their civilization, they simply latched onto another power. This promotes stagnancy, as now they'll never actually have to change.

    • @andromidius
      @andromidius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      However it might be something of a benefit - if Benzites strive for a specialist field from a young age they will become an authority on the topic by the time they are adults and may simply ignore or not recognise a problem outside of their speciality. This would make them very single minded individually, but also very adaptive and rapid to respond to issues as a whole. Imagine today's world if our leading experts were treated as authority on the things they know and we follow their solutions to problems without questioning it - it might be a massive boon to society as a whole, or a rapid collapse if a mistake is made by someone who is mistakenly viewed as an expert. Which would explain their prior philosophy on people who don't achieve greatness - they would literally be a threat to their society if allowed to continue.

    I could be pondering the idea of meritocracy taken to a dark extreme and all it's implications, but instead I'm still still asking myself how likely it is that the females of a species that look like catfish would still have breasts. It kind of demonstrates what the Progenitors were prioritizing when they seeded all those planets with their DNA.

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breast placement and morphology is a consequence of being upright bipeds with hands who give live birth to infants that require constant small meals loaded with specific nutrients. Look at other great apes. Compare with hand-less marsupials that feed their infants via test-like organs inside abdominal pouches.
      The Benzite mouth tentacles are irrelevant, you're assuming they must be fish.

    • @chrisortega7521
      @chrisortega7521 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gun sounds are just for dramatic effect. It would be odd to watch the Roci against the Amun-Ra in dead silence. As for the ships coming to a "stop" when hit, I think it's meant to show that said ship is no longer accelerating. Using a viewpoint-relativity shot, what we see as stopped is really because the other ship is still accelerating.

      @@TheLiverTea That Benzite, Hoya, was crewing the runabout with two humans, Rooney and Bertram, at the time so changing the environment wouldn’t have been an option.
