  • The Nausicaans are named after a Ghibli anime. They are about one of the most un-whimsical things in Star Trek. Bad attitudes, love of a fight and frequently met as both pirates and mercenaries, they have proven to be an issue for many a captain and other species of the Alpha and Beta quadrants.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!
How to VOTE on what happens next:
Over on the Community tab there will be a voting option for one of the two species next up on the Index!

I kinda wonder if they have a shared ancestry. The formation of their cranial ridges is extremely similar, as is the way their hair grows. Both of their societies could be viewed as alternate visions of honor, and indeed we see the moral compass of the Klingon Empire decay in the Nausicaan direction.
I wonder, is there any sort of lost colony mythic in Klingon history? Perhaps an early space faring mission that was assumed lost?

Inquiro Haqq Technically, they and the Orion Syndicate willingly signed on for mostly their own gains, namely having a bit of amnesty for raids and the like. For the Syndicate, Matriarch T’soni pledged cooperation with the Empire, as it allowed a far easier avenue to collect slaves to sell as the Klingons typically encouraged their ruthlessness in raiding. Many Naussicans are employed (and I use that term very loosely) by the Syndicate for use as mercenaries or bodyguards, much like the Ferengi do.
While they retain *some* autonomy, both groups, as well as the Gorn Hedgemony all have the same sort of partnership of sorts with the Empire. Don’t believe any of them were subjugated by the Empire itself, though of course there could be instances of it, even though I believe the Klingons aren’t dumb enough to actually try. They all share common interests, and it seems more like a case of mutual benefit for all involved.

We don't get a lot of info on their home planet, do we? My headcanon is that it's a tidelocked planet where the collision of hot and cold air on the border between the day and night sides creates massive, near-constant windstorms that have eroded a gigantic canyon system ringing the entire planet.

I'd always rather liked the Nausicaans as they were portrayed in Tapestry, with somewhat broken dialect and incomplete translation. I was disappointed that they ended up not keeping that in later canon appearances. (Did they go back to that in Enterprise? I don't recall, and it's a few weeks out in my rewatch cycle at the moment, but I suspect they didn't) It makes sense that the UT isn't always going to be perfect, and that some species might have unique speech patterns that aren't so cleanly translated.
