Immidiatly thought of kagura from bb when you explained the archetype and was excited when he showed up at the end. Having to quickly slide into a stance then into a huge sword swing perfectly emulated the weight, momentum, and finesse of a normal sized person with a huge weapon.
Of this archetype, Fiona from Arcana Heart is most memorable to me. This is a little girl with a big HEAVY sword. But the emphasis is no longer on size, but on weight of the sword. The consequence of this is that the moves are slow and with great inertia, and after some attacks Fiona falls to the ground with the sword. But all this is offset by the fact that most of the moves have hyperarmor, and this is visually explained not by the fact that Fiona is strong and withstands attacks, but by the fact that the sword is awesome heavy, and if you swing it, it will fall by inertia, even if Fiona has received damage.
My friend recently got me into Guilty Gear Strive. He's a fighting game player, and along with a few others-- I was getting my ass handed to me all the time, as I just don't play a lot of fighting games. because it's such a broad grouping of characters, I would say they all plainly fit under the "swordie" archetype because of their disjointed hitboxes. individually, they fall somewhere between bully and physical zoner
I think Amaterasu in MVC3 could be considered as a part of the oversized weapon characters, even if calling her stance character makes more sense. The fact she has the option to choose from a shield, the big sword, and the chain of beads is really cool imo.
All these giant weapons and yet no mention of Gordeau from Uni. Sure, he's not exactly a small guy, but there's nothing quite like hitting from 3/4 of the screen away with your giant scythe.
@@SuuBrainrot Uni has some of the biggest hitboxes that have ever hitboxed, but there's actually not many characters that use oversized weapons. Carmine uses blood, Hilda summons shadow-things, Merkava uses his own appendages, etc. A lot of characters like Hyde or Linne have great hitboxes by most other fighting games' standards, but I wouldn't count their relatively smaller weapons as "oversized." Of the characters that use actual weapons, the biggest has to be either Gordeau's or Yuzuriha's.
i love colossus in yomi hustle, the guy with a sword 3x his size that's so strong he can launch the opponent into space with one swing and create earthquakes just by dropping it
Pshhh May isn’t an archetype. She’s just rushdown lol. Her frame data doesn’t even reflect such a huge wep. Now ABA she’s a refreshing archetype. Non-big character…BUT hampered movement & needs to install to unlock its true power. More like character traits or characteristics…not archetype. And both of them have great back dashes…
I was about to get fully on board with the idea of the video, but almost immediately I feel like you're confusing character design with character archetype. Yes, when a zoner like ramlethal swings her swords slowly and controls the mid range with her long reach, the size of the weapon is very prominent. But she's a zoner at her core. She was designed with the big swings, setting traps and using her swords as projectiles as part of her toolkit as a zoner. That's her archetype. Cliff is a much different type of character. Visually, his design also emphasizes on his big sword just like ramlethal, but despite his design sharing one similarity of using a few big lumbering powerful swings, he was designed to rush you down and be good at mid range. In exchange for having better range than most rushdown characters, he gets a shitty health bar. But his archetype is rushdown. There are many characters who have large weapons that incorporate that visual trait into a unique trademark for their playstyles, but in the end I feel like all of those characters already fit into another fighting game character archetype instead of comparing and pooling together characters who work with different functions and can have wildly varied game feels into one category based on a common visual attribute. I don't mean to make this comment like I'm trying to debunk your whole video or anything, I just feel like the concept you pitched feels a little redundant. It was cool seeing you talk about characters with big weapons tho, so you have my like. :)
I don’t think there’s necessarily a character in this specific archetype there, but I’d love to see discussion of Idol Showdown; outside the Hololive love, the roguelike single player mode is especially engaging, and a great variety of fighters
Not quite the same archetype, but swordies in smash bros poisoned my liking of weapon chars cuz they have barely more whiff recovery (aka endlag), still have stupid good frame data, good mobility, sometimes good recovery, only weakness is throws usually But these chars can be kinda funny
I don't think this really counts as an "archetype," by FGC terms, anyway. It's more just a character design. That being said, yeah, it's the best. The main character in the fighting game I'm making has a bigass sword. I wanted to make an easy-to-learn character who is balanced between zoning and rushdown capabilities without being just another shoto
From a visual design standpoint, what’s way cooler than a character just appearing to be strong enough to wield the weapon effortlessly is when the animations show them using the momentum of the weapon to move and attack as quickly as they do.
I believe the reason there isn't a specific name for this archetype is that... Well, this isn't exactly an archetype, more of a property you can add to an archetype, kind of like "big body". You can have a large weapon zoner, or a large weapon rushdown, for example. The large weapon isn't necessarily the central point of the playstyle, more like a twist on how you go about your main archetype's goals. That said, I fully agree we need more little people with comically large weapons
As someone who has gotten into strive through playing Ramlethal, I think the archetype has a lot to offer to the genre, despite how annoying it can be implemented sometimes. Great video!
Garland in the FF Dissidia Games uses and oversize all-in-one-Axehammer-dule-converted-grate sowrds, that can be swong with a chian. In Dissidia NT he starts off slow but the more he lands his attacks the stronger and faster he becomes. That and the Character Snow in Dissidia NT. Has a super coruption arm that has a pretty fast start up on some of his normals, That and "Impact drive" Is a fast devestating super to use.
This is my favorite kind of chericture I play Mako/Arcadia in brawl ABA/May in guilty gear also the only chericture I play in blaze blue is Es so self explanatory. And I know its not a fighting game but in Hades II I use the axe. We need more characters like this. also a new great sword legond in brawlhalla I dont care what wepon they have as long as they have great sword. Also great video :)
My favorite fighting style was shadow fight. Since it was based on more realistic mouvement, you will swing your weapon logically and plan you hit. The reason why big weapon tend to be bad in that game is because you are realisticly slow and its super hard to land a hit that way compared to the spear wich is one of the best weapon because of big range for super fast attack speed.
I might be nitpicking but I wish they made Ruby's scythe bigger since her trailer made an emphasis on how massive it is compared to her. (Even though that would make her even more crazy op.) At least Es' body to weapon ratio would be fine. Although on second thought, that may be because she swings and moves too fast. Her scythe looks pretty big when you look at her sprites.
I hear Ape Escape, I like. Good video! I love Sephiroth's design in SSBU (minus the wing mechanic). They translated his comically large katana into the "glass-cannon swordie" of the game, capable of both walling and destroying you but struggling in defense and dying early.
i usually call these types of characters "mid range brawlers/bruisers" though it includes any character with these qualities, regardless of big weapon or not. we COULD call them "heavy slash" characters in honor of guilty gear while nodding to big big weapon.
I love the characters that are tiny with massive weapons or the opposite (massive person tiny weapons) One of the main reasons I really like May and A.B.A
I don't know if it counts, but the character that caught my attention and got me into fighting games was Chang Koehan. I remember walking by the arcades and seeing Chang and the ball he uses as a weapon, it looked menacing, he instantly became my favorite character without even playing the game lol
now we need the opposite archetype, big character with a puny dagger. high defense and attack speed would be CRAZY but at the cost of low speed and/or attack
I don’t think people realize how deep fighting games are. How deeply we connect with these archetypes and how they affect our lives outside the game. Fighting games are something great!
AKA every single character in UNIB. Big Weapon Character Starter Kit: Big range, extended hitbox on a lot of moves but really pathetic stumpy range on others in key areas to create highs and lows in neutral. Meaty, nasty punish moves that cover half of the screen but have huge penalties on block or whiff. Humongord crazy damage on even basic strings, but low HP and vulnerable to blockstrings and being rushed down themselves. Anti-Air has some whacky and very precise unreliable hitbox even though they could probably just swing their weapon in an arc, but they won't. Guard breaks/unblockables out the ass. Move that looks like it should have hyper armor/guard frames but it doesn't. Move that looks like it shouldn't have hyper armor/guard frames but it does. Your walk speed and backdash is really bad but your sprint/forward dash is good. Tiny, stubby little low kick that's somehow the most important move in their entire kit. Surprise command grab that comes out of nowhere and does more work than most grapplers. Charge inputs/charged inputs. Self-damage gimmicks.
Marcus from shadow fight series (3 and 4) are soo slow, soo eazy to punish, but in his second stage, the glitch stage, he can do a really quick charge attack that even a forward rolling cant punish ! I think its a really cool concept of big weapon archetype, a big guy with big sword that trapped in time paradox and have deadly glitch power Im forget to mention that he also has a armor during his shadow ability🫠, only 2 character that has shadow armor in shadow fight 4 arena, his 2 shadow move are also so intimidating tho🫠
In the same vein, unexpectedly acrobatic large body characters. They are kinda rare, off the top of my head I can only think of Tekken's Bob right now, but there's something inherently fun about tossing around someone with that kind of momentum.
i feel it would probably be better to more broadly define the archetype. Its not essential to the mechanical design of a character if they have a big weapon. For example, a character with a kit centered around large, powerful disjoints would fit the mechanical essence of the archetype. To be honest, maybe they just ought to be called "heavy swordfighters"? i'm aware that a lot of these weapons aren't swords but a hitbox is a hitbox
These are just mid range chars with big normals. Weapons can be used in a variety of different designs, and their gameplay varies wildly. I think an archetype need a sharper definition, with more focus on the proper gameplay and less in the external aesthetics, to stand up by itself.
I call this archetype the win big lose big because its either or for me btw I main kagura nago enkidu kouma vaseraga....you get the point also i know some of the characters i named dont have weapons but they all feel the same when the match starts
One game that maaaybe you could try talking about in these videos is a mobile game called Shadow Fight: Arena? Has a roster of different characters all wielding different weapons and movesets and one of the has indeed a greatsword that matches what you said here, wide but slow high damaging attacks. Believe me it may be a mobile game but I think it's very good.
Funnily enough cloud from smash should fill this archetype but actually doesn't because the buster sword is relatively medium sized compared to other fighters in smash

i usually call these types of characters "mid range brawlers/bruisers" though it includes any character with these qualities, regardless of big weapon or not. we COULD call them "heavy slash" characters in honor of guilty gear while nodding to big big weapon.
I love the characters that are tiny with massive weapons or the opposite (massive person tiny weapons)
One of the main reasons I really like May and A.B.A
I don't know if it counts, but the character that caught my attention and got me into fighting games was Chang Koehan. I remember walking by the arcades and seeing Chang and the ball he uses as a weapon, it looked menacing, he instantly became my favorite character without even playing the game lol
1:50 Hey Typhon how did you made this effect
Or what the name of this effect plz

Thanks you ❤️
@@typhoonbh Much appreciated man!
now we need the opposite archetype, big character with a puny dagger.
high defense and attack speed would be CRAZY but at the cost of low speed and/or attack
Why complicate the name? The Great Weapon (Wielder) (greatsword, greataxe, greathammer, etc...)
true
Hey, I’m in this! Thanks for using some of my, albeit old, Kliff play. He’s a great character!
Tokudai can be the name for this archetype, as it is the japanese term for "oversized"
I don’t think people realize how deep fighting games are. How deeply we connect with these archetypes and how they affect our lives outside the game. Fighting games are something great!
I've been gradually recognizing just how much I like oversized weapon users. They just scratch the right itches.
1:46 thats gotta be the best looking thing ive ever seen
sandstorm mentioned LETSFUCKINGGOOOOOO
AKA every single character in UNIB.
Big Weapon Character Starter Kit:
Big range, extended hitbox on a lot of moves but really pathetic stumpy range on others in key areas to create highs and lows in neutral.
I love seeing soulcaliburs big swords in action
Idk wats the state of greatsword currently but it was definitely fast with those strings even tho it's a heavy looking weapon
For sure
Marcus from shadow fight series (3 and 4) are soo slow, soo eazy to punish, but in his second stage, the glitch stage, he can do a really quick charge attack that even a forward rolling cant punish !
I think its a really cool concept of big weapon archetype, a big guy with big sword that trapped in time paradox and have deadly glitch power
Im forget to mention that he also has a armor during his shadow ability🫠, only 2 character that has shadow armor in shadow fight 4 arena, his 2 shadow move are also so intimidating tho🫠
In the same vein, unexpectedly acrobatic large body characters. They are kinda rare, off the top of my head I can only think of Tekken's Bob right now, but there's something inherently fun about tossing around someone with that kind of momentum.
Another fun subversion is smaller grapplers, like Bullet in Blazblue and Shermie in KOF.
i feel it would probably be better to more broadly define the archetype.
This vid literally reminded me of the dinoblade game/animation dats currently being developed
Oh yeahh
I woude call them "Guts" Characters.
has a nice ring to it
My man Kliff makes Guts blush
These are just mid range chars with big normals. Weapons can be used in a variety of different designs, and their gameplay varies wildly.
I think an archetype need a sharper definition, with more focus on the proper gameplay and less in the external aesthetics, to stand up by itself.
I call this archetype "small girl with big sword". It just captures the energy.
I didnt realize that pretty much all of the characters I like in different games fit the archetype. I love ABA tho.
A bit sad that you didn’t talk about Magyar at all considering he was in the thumbnail.
It was mostly about the weapon than the character but yeah Jaeyun didn’t look as good in the thumbnail
@@typhoonbh but Magyars stats embodied the same characteristics as the weapon even if Jaeyun is considered the best of the three.
I call this archetype the win big lose big because its either or for me btw I main kagura nago enkidu kouma vaseraga....you get the point also i know some of the characters i named dont have weapons but they all feel the same when the match starts
I was about to sleep but I'm glad I'm ruining my sleep schedule with peak
my bad this vid was supposed to go out earlier
The "Nuts from Angry" phenotype
I’d recognize that music anywhere :) when I got to Specters level, it was amazing!
My fav is Siegfried and Nightmare from Soul Calibur along with Siegfried from Grandblue VS!
I literally main every character that holds a big weapon in games. Its just so cool😆
Not me maining Basara in Samsho V because throwing an over-sized shuriken to the other end of the screen is fun lmao
this archetype could be called BFW (Big fuckoff Weapon) as a little reference to doom
2:01 Bro, how did you get this chalkboard drawing type of look? It’s smooth.

@@typhoonbh Thanks. ✨🙏🏾✨
Heavy weapons guy should be the name of these type of characters
love that gamechops remix, one of my favorite versions of that song
Same
Respect the Ape Escape Music fr
I respect the melatonin music lol
Funnily enough cloud from smash should fill this archetype but actually doesn't because the buster sword is relatively medium sized compared to other fighters in smash
The coolest archetype is defo puppet characters (coming from a puppet character glazer)
Can I ask which filter/effect you apply at like 2:00 ? It looks dope i

For the new league fighting game Riven could be the girl with oversized sword angle, or gwen with some big ah scissors
Ah yes, big sword guy.
