  • Our release of THE GRADUATE-out this week on Blu-ray and DVD-features a new interview with Dustin Hoffman in which he shares about the life-changing experience of working on the film. Here, he talks about his initial screen test for the role (opposite Katharine Ross), and how Nichols helped him hone his nervous energy into one of modern cinema’s most memorable performances.

As a new actor that has just finished her first play (in a leading role no less) this was very good to hear. You don't often hear such accomplished actors talk about a first time, and messing up an nervousness. Thank you Mr. Hoffman...one of the greats!

Mr. Hoffman, thank you for this iconic character you do own. The fact that you 'felt that sweat' is part of what came through in the film that makes me crazy from the very first time in the movie theater.....in 1967. Oh, the beautiful humanity of it all. You're one of my favorite all time, sir.

Anne Bancroft was better looking. Just my opinion. Plus Bancroft was sexier.

Definitely sweet. I also liked Katherine Ross in Butch Cassidy and the Stepford Wives.
But personally I am attracted to much more complex women. If I had the choice, I would pick Anne Bancroft. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Too bad she was the most overrated and untalented actress of her decade. You are right - she was pretty, but it was William Daniels who made this movie what it was. As far as Dustin Hoffman - it was (as usual) Dustin Hoffman playing Dustin Hoffman playing Dustin Hoffman. William Daniels stole the show, as always.

I can visibly see Dustin was nervous on this film, and it added a more neurotic traits to the character. But man, the director, I didn't know him was nervous too. The shoots were beautiful and introspective. Especially when Mrs. Robinson took off her bras, snapshots of her body and facial expression of Ben made me feel like Ben, "this thing is really awkward and forbidden , but I can not help from looking"

Only recently seen the Movie. I thought it was a great movie. Always loved Dustin Hoffman's movies. He was 30years old. But he did only look 20 going on 21. What a fantastic actor he is. One of Hollywood's best. Seen everything he's in. But this one ... I recorded recently on RTE. The main broadcaster in Dublin Ireland. Where I live. Great stuff Dustin. What a brilliant film. Loved it. Mr Stephen Corbally dublin central Ireland. ☆☆☆☆☆

Growing up in the 1950s - 60s in an NYC suburb, I remember always having subway tokens in my pockets. When he got to the end of the story and there were the tokens framed, from the prop man, it touched a chord in my heart and I immediately teared up.

I've always thought that The Graduate is the most perfect movie ever made. Music, great, Simon & Garfunkel at their best. Comedy, great. Drama, great. Dustin Hoffman, great. All the other major actors, great. Writing and script, great. There are a dozen sequences that are all great. Everything, great.

The Mike Nichols, the full cast and crew, the whole shebang did a really bang-up job on "The Graduate." One of the truly great movies of the 1960's! And that's saying several mouthfuls as there were a lot of great films produced in the '60's.

@@kpflo123 I read that something similar happened to Alicia Silverstone when they were casting My So-Called Life... it's not that Claire Danes is unattractive, but Silverstone was so adorable that the the idea that she would be pining away for an on-the-fence Jordan Catalano episode after episode just didn't seem plausible. (That's not to say that she would have otherwise definitely gotten the part on the show, but that her good looks were a strike against her.)

Years ago (1960s) there was a quiz show on around 3pm called The Match Game. There were 2 groups competing and each one had a celebrity leader for a week. This was way before The Graduate was made. Dustin was the celebrity one time and my mom and me were saying “who the fuck is this drip). I guess he was doing stage work.

The Graduate is a GREAT film, Mike Nichols best! I liked Dustin Hoffman as Ben, but always felt he was miscast. I do NOT mean that as a 'put down' in any way, shape, or form. A great actor can make a role 'their own' no matter what...even if they are not the ideal physical type for the role.

Nice story about the tokens ! He's become a much calmer person now - He bought flowers for my girlfriend after being rude to her in a Hotel where she was working at the time in Harrogate The Old Swan . Time teaches it's lessons I'm sure he's no longer a rude man and I guess he learnt from that event , he must of been in his 30's about 40 years ago he was filming Straw Dogs I think at this time .
