I have 2 monitors and one just looks like a shorter (1680x1050) non glossy (bezel) version of the other.
because of the 1050 vs 1080 it is a little bit funny dragging things between the two cuz they're vertical height is practically identical but the resolution is 30 pixel shorter.

    Hey!
There's some really good points you make in this video but I personally think these cons are definetly not a problem when looking at the pros. Because for people like me, the main reason why we want dual monitors is flexibility. Having the possibility of moving one program over to another place, on another monitor, out of your way, but still being able to keep track of it is great.

For video editing, designing, drawing, AutoCAD... I think it's pretty obvious that a multiple monitor setup could be a big advantage. Me being a hardcore Excel and SAP office user, I really struggle to see the benefit of even a dual setup. Too much hassle with dragging stuff from left to right and even copy/paste between different Windows is much faster with a properly setup tablet pen, than a dual monitor setup.

Great video and thank you for the insights. I'm a developer. In many cases, I leave the 24-inch monitor unused and I'm so used to switching apps with keyboard shortcuts... It is not a requirement, neither a must-have. I feel more efficient most time by working on a single screen, using the extra space for writing down notes on paper and my desk looks way more organized.

I find the best setup to be 13" - 16" laptop on one side and 24" - 27" monitor on one side. That way, if you need to carry your work outside, you can just carry your laptop. And you can have somewhat of dual monitor setup with the big monitor one side and small laptop monitor on the other. I can just use my laptop solely or close up my laptop if I just wanted one screen to focus on my work.

My personal setup is 2 different monitors at the moment. For the main monitor, I have a Dell 27 Inch monitor that displays 1440p, and my second monitor is an Acer 23 inch monitor, that displays 1080p. I hate the look when my second monitor is flat on my desk, but I prop my second monitor up on a couple books to level the bottoms, make the viewing experience 10x better in my opinion.

Truthfully, with my smart tv and smartphone, i usually only use my computer to do simple tasks. Granted, i dont “game” but couldnt you just use your smartphone in the same capacity as the second monitor? (I.e., listen to youtube/music or message someone, even put your sources up and copy them as you type the paper on the single screen? I dont know but i appreciate the mention of space as well. I already have a difficult time fitting the computer and printer in the same space.

There is so much you can do on a second monitor you just need a bit of imagination. Like cross-referencing, music controls, chat... or just declutering when you have too many browser tabs, by spreading them around. 2 monitors are always worth it. And the price thing is pretty much a non issue, as a lot of people use their old monitor as a secondary when they buy a new one. Yes it's not pretty but that is why you use the good one as your primary. Facebook chat does not have to be perfectly color calibrated.

I prefer 3 monitors setups if they are done right and here's why.
They should all be the same monitors with thin bezels.
I don't think you should have multi monitor setups with different monitors if you care at all about looks.
When gaming you can game on all of them since there is screen in the center
When working you can have google docs on one, information from a site on another, and youtube or different site on the 3rd. Also 3 monitors are great for editing in software like Sony Vegas Pro which is what I use.
Overall I think 3 monitors is better than two.
If I would only have 1 monitor it would be a 1440p ultra wide
Also it isn't THAT expensive, you can get a good setup for abound $312 + $60 for a vesa mount for them
I don't think you should invest in multi monitor setups if you don't think you will always use them.
Eventually, if you do get dual or triple or even hex monitors, you will get good at doing things with multiple screens and it would be very useful
You also shouldn't get them if it would be too cluttered.

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with you completely. Some people just won't find the use, but for who mega multitask, it'd be extremely useful. ~$400 in investment I would hardly call inexpensive, especially since one of the best thin monitors in my opinion, the Dell S2415H is ~$150. But overall, I agree 3 monitors is way better than 2.

I'm with you, I've been using triple monitors for years and can't imagine being without them as it's just such a versatile setup.
Worse case scenario, I could probably get by with 2 but I do like to have that 3rd monitor when I program.
As the person in the video wisely mentioned, it's a question of understanding your needs and how you use your computer.

Cross referencing, spread sheets, file management, media editing (photo, video, and more). I do not use less than 3 these days, even the one at work that is lesser used always displays my calendar, at a glance I know where I am with everything. Email on one screen, my main work on the other, and I still juggle windows.

My dual monitor setup does being left half empty when I am in relax mode watching YT. But during productivity or gaming mode, the second monitor can be used for putting extra information such as wiki, guides, references, or files. Dual monitor doesnt need to double the cost as there are cheaper yet pleasing second monitor in the market. I am a huge fan of dual monitor, and I use MSI G241 (24”) and LG 27GP850 (27”). Both have “thin” bezel, and when aligned they dont look bad.

@jonny_laguna more like dragging files across screens when doing productivity stuffs such as Solidworks and AutoCAD. My minimal setup in the office is two 24in screen. The other screen is used to open different file windows, phone app, and web browser. Sometimes if I want to open multiple MS office files I can. But when I was a student I don't need 2 monitors because side by side window was enough when all I do was typing and copy and pasting (2012 11in Macbook air).

I think most people using multiple monitors, most of the time at least, could use workspaces instead. But since most people don't know about workspaces, perhaps because Windows didn't have this feature built-in until 10 I think (and even now it's hidden by default), they see adding a second monitor as the only option to remove clutter.

Easy solution for the space problem.. buy some arms that connect at the back of the desk. I have two monitors that take up no space on my desk since I can put a ton of stuff under them including my work laptop. On top of that I can easily move them around any way I want in 3d space thanks to the arms.
It’s an amazing setup and the arms were only 40 dollars. You can either clamp them on the back or drill a hole in the desk. Not hard to find some, just make sure they support your monitor size and that your monitors support back mounts. Not hard to install either

I've got an dilemma :/ . I have a BenQ 1080p, 144hz, 27" which I console game on but with my new pc I would like to buy a 1440p monitor. (maybe a dell s2417dg)
However I will still play console and I don't want the blur from forcing console 1080p on a 1440p display. I don't know whether to put the two different monitors (The Dell and the BenQ) next to each other (Space isn't a massive issue) or to simply get a newer 1080p monitor and replace my current one. Really would appreciate some help as I'm stuck, thanks man!

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think you'd have any issue placing them right by each other. I mean sure, they'd look like two different monitors, but I believe in this case function over form matters most! You could calibrate the colors to match each other as closely as you can as well, helping it look quite a bit better.

      @JimmyTriesWorld  7 ปีที่แล้ว

jge That's true, I think what he means is that the 144hz monitor is the one he uses because it's the 1080 display available at his desk and that's why he's using it rather than buying it solely for 144hz.

Thanks!

I had dual monitors. Can't decide if better or worse. When I procrastinate - boy was the setup effective for procrastination. But when I was working - it was also more effective. Especially when all the tasks are right by on the other screen. Especially when you do things like rendering, creating websites etc etc. If you have software that separates it into 2 standalone screens (each has taskbar of their own) then the soft that finishes some work does not pop right above what you're doing.

Personally, I find it hard to focus on one thing when I have two monitors, but I do see the value in having extra screen real estate, so having an Ultra wide I can split in two comfortably is great. And when I just want to do one thing I can just full screen the tab and focus 100%

I definitely found my study work to be much easier, and flow much better with 2 monitors. I can watch my learning material on the larger stand alone monitor, and then take my G-Docs notes on my laptop's screen.
It's so much nicer than having just my laptop, and having to split both my browser's down to half the screen size and do it side-by-side. And forget switching back and forth which is window is active. Very squished and annoying or highly inconvenient.
    All praise 2 monitors!

As to the "half the time my 2nd monitor is empty" - that's where Rainmeter or other similar monitoring/management desktop widgets come in handy - as an audio professional I always have to make sure the sounds I analyze aren't too compressed or are in safe hearing ranges, so I have a few active oscilloscope readers and foobar2000 to keep track of that! And keeping a clock, weather widget, network, and CPU monitoring widgets adds a whole lot to your 2nd monitor experience.
It's the small things that really come in handy with a dual monitor setup!
This is underrated and not told often enough advice but BUY A MULTIMONITOR STAND/MOUNT. Not only does it fix your nearby real estate but it also eases the process of better posture and viewing angles for everyday work. It also makes the uniformity of your monitors look much cleaner when they match!
Anyways if a person is going 1440p or 4k it just seems so overkill to get a multimonitor setup since windows tiling is already good since windows 7 and you take away power from the gpu to render separate tasks on both screens.
Great vid! My takeaway though is that it could be more elaborate for those who could benefit more from the smaller things than from one narrow viewpoint.

They're amazing for workstations, gaming, streaming, anything. They're definitely worth the money. It also doesn't affect performance once so ever. Also if you're complaining about the price, there are budget monitors from $100-$300. But as time goes by, and changes in my working environment as I'm dealing with online IT System, streaming big data then dual monitor help me, one monitor shows all the data, and one more monitor for running Excel, Powerpoint or Words. It is much easier to refer to one full page monitor while completing the task in the other monitor.

Having 2 displays for gaming is a game changer, you can look at guides, YT, listen to music, grab torrents, or watch anime while gaming. 3 or more monitors is kinda useless though. I really want an arm for my secondary monitor, but they are expensive for a good one.

Dual monitors? Why not two TV screens running at 720p.

Been dual monitor user for years now. Couldn't ever go back to single display full time, it just drives me crazy using anything's single display desktop or laptop. I instantly go to move a Windows out of the way and I'm like oh rights have to min it lol

I don't know why it's so popularized with all these big tech channels because the average person, who probably is only gonna game with their PC and nothing else, doesn't need two. I'm an architect and I absolutely need two monitors, but if you're not gonna stream and you're not gonna do work on your PC, then you definitely don't need two monitors. Simple as that. The small miscellaneous tasks that do require two monitors will never outweigh the cost of actually having to buy the mount and monitor.

Liked the video. You mentioned ultra-wide monitors. What about using an ultra-wide monitor with split screen?

I have made a rule for myself, either multiple monitors OR one monitor with a special. I currently have one 144hz monitor and it works great ;)

    great video !
    i use an LG TV 42inch 1080p 3D From 2011 ! i dont think i will upgrade to 28 inch monitor ( Downgrade )
the only benefit with gaming monitors are lower latency and Butter Smooth 144hz or even on 60hz ! but i dislike the small size on my desk because i am used to 42 inch or 32

Geez man, that's huge! I do know they sell cheap 40in 4K TVs now for around $400 USD. Might want to check those out!

I use a mini monitor the size of an iPad intended for a raspberry pi. Works awesome, doesnt look ugly because I dont have it setup in the same spot as my main
