It's cool that this woman has become a pillar of her local bird community. They're still wild but sometimes it's like they think, "I am in need of guidance, I will visit the Food Lady."
It depends on the person, crows and cockatoos around my mums farm chase off birds who try to eat mums olives apples and nectarines as she feeds them tasty meal worms and talks to them.
Kookaburras are the coolest birds. When I was a kid I found a baby kookaburra whose beak was stuck in between the palings of an old wooden fence in our backyard. Poor little guy was freaking out so I freed him or her and gave them some sliced Devon before they took off to reunite with their parents who'd been observing us closely. Every single day when I'd get home from school they'd be waiting for me in the backyard. In Summer we'd leave the sprinkler on for them. After a while there was a small flock of random native birds I'd rescued - two magpies, a currawong, three kookaburras and they all just hang out in our backyard. Growing up in Australia is awesome.
