  • Sorry about this, a sound issue snuck through on the last upload. All fixed. Enjoy!
Audi have just updated a cornerstone of their lineup - the A4. This new variant has a whole host of new features and in this video I drive what Audi expect to be their best and biggest seller, the petrol engined A4 35 TFSI.

    My experience with Audi A4 35 e-tfsi (2022) after 10,000km:
Summed up in one sentence - the car is extremely refined, comfortable and effortless to drive.
The drivetrain is quiet, linear and very smooth. The engine is 150hp 2.0 turbo petrol, with the assistance of more powerful alternator, that acts as generator while decelerating, to store the electric energy within the small battery pack in the trunk.
I think it also acts as torque filler at lower rpms, while pulling away or while accelerating.
The engine is quite elastic, with flat torque curve, and pulls nicely from 1,500 revs until 6,000revs. They tried to make it more 'diesel-like', if it makes sense.
The only small drawback is the gearbox tendency to switch to high revs instantaneously when applying the throttle abruptly.
This is something that can be mitigated with slightly more gentle driving style, and progressively applying the throttle while accelerating hard or overtaking - that way you 'use the entire rev range', and the car pulls nicely.
Overall, the engine is strong enough, but requires a bit of planning when accelerating, despite strong torque curve (for a petrol engine).
The fuel consumption is decent: it is very good on highways and longer journeys / combined driving, where it can average between 6.8 and 7.5 L/100km. In urban conditions, and when you drive it hard, it goes up to 9.0-9.5 L/100km on average.
My style of driving yields approx. 8-8.5 L/100k on average, but I am probably more taxing on the fuel than the average driver.
The comfort is superb, it's the best part about this car. I have the upgraded sports seats, that hold body in place beautifully.
The suspension, low noise, smooth driving - brilliant. I have done a lot of long journeys, and I can only praise how the car behaved. Tyres are 225 50 17, with enough meat to benefit the ride quality.
You can also drive it hard, where the car steers precisely and grips well in the corners. Paddle shifts help the sporty feeling.
Headlights are also great, full LEDs that work great in the night-time, and look awesome during the day.
The quality of the interior is superb, Audi is first class in that regard; the materials, virtual cockpit, plastic, knobs and buttons - all first class.
Maintenance - the first service interval is @30,000km or two years, which is great. Warranty is 4yrs or 120k kms.
Overall, I would sum up the ratings as follows
    Drivetrain 8.5/10
    Driving & Comfort 9.5/10
    Quality & Design 10/10
MPG & Costs of ownership 7.5/10

I’ve been driving a 1.4tfsi A4 sport manual for the past 2 and a half years. It’s nothing special to look at, drives not very excitingly and is very comfortable. Maybe a bit boring. But the more time I spend in it, the more I appreciate the quality of the car. I’ll definitely be having a look at this one next year. Thanks for your honest opinion, Jay. And, of course your inimitable sense of humour. Brilliant!

My Audi dealer massively cocked up a software update on my TT, so I've been experiencing the joys of courtesy cars for the past week whilst they fix it. I had one of these (35 TSFI, manual) for the weekend and it was very good indeed - it handled very nicely, engine was perfectly adequate for normal motoring. I then switched to an A3 with the same engine, and it was surprising just how much quicker it felt in a smaller, lighter car - very impressive and properly punchy. Real world economy is excellent too.

I currently have a 87k mls 2017 A4 TDI Sport in Silver!! I have just ordered my new car which is the A4 35 Sport TFSI in Navarra Blue with the optional 18" Dynamic wheels. I can feed back that there is no real options that you can add from Audi eg: lights upgrade / privacy glass / wireless charging etc.. which is extremely frustrating as even just the privacy glass surely would not affect emissions?? I have had Audi get a 3rd party just to "add" the Privacy Glass as a dealer option.

Your views on the entertainment system. Spot on !
I watched a video on an earlier Audi that had the button to hide it, that was a good idea, why have they stopped doing that ? Grrr.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only other car to do this is a Bentley !
To me it's totally insane that it is illegal to drive while using a mobile (which I agree with) yet the touch screen can be just as much a distraction.
I can just see an inept driver prodding away at their 'infotainment system' and then having an accident. Crazy.
    Great review BTW.

Beautiful car. There really is little to complain about with an A4 if you want an all round high quality car. The stupid regulations regarding emissions which are strangling car makers from every which angle are, without sounding political, the EU's doing. Because, you know, the extra 0.001g/km saving is worth it for hiking the cost of development up for the manufacturers which clearly have to pass them onto the consumer. A diesel S4 and S6 can be attributed to biased CO2 testing by the EU, where other continents focus on other pollutants, so currently technology dictates that you can't get the sort of power from a diesel S4 anymore form a petrol if you want it to meet regulation criteria, and electric cars aren't profitable for manufactures, no attractive for consumers. The regulations on manufacturing cars in the EU are becoming so tight. Most of the cars that Manufacturers like JLR build are exported to the US, which isn't party to the Paris Agreement and therefore doesn't require the cars to adhere to a lot of the regulations.
This means that a big part of the cost of developing and manufacturing cars in the EU is wasted when sold in the biggest car market in the world.
Either, the manufacturers will pass that cost on to the American consumer, which will make Euro cars in the US uncompetitively priced, which will hurt sales and affect profitability, or, the manufacturers will price the cars lower in order to compete with US domestic and Asian offerings which will force the quality of the cars down and likely cost a few jobs in Europe.
Either way, as with every industry on the planet, regulation hurts. I fear the European and British car industry has a tough time ahead, given that the secondary markets are dictating costly regulations which competitors in the primary market don't have to invest in.
