- One of the most beloved renditions of the Canadian national anthem "O Canada" committed to film, "With Glowing Hearts" (the actual film title) was wonderfully edited together from existing National Film Board footage and first seen in 1979. In addition to being utilized by television stations across the country for sign-off messages the film was also shown theatrically; as originally posted on my first account.
I remember when tv stations would shut down at night and played this at the end of their programming day. Seemed like much simpler and happier times back then.
It was. No good has come from paid advertising, and you sure aren't getting better programming because of it...
Yes I agree with you on that
Love
Little girl hugging little brother at the very end.... one of the most beautiful things that I ever saw on my tiny 12 inch analog tv screen here in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA
In France tonight. I'm homesick. I love my Canada, my beloved home.
Everything about this arrangement is just absolutely perfect musically..not a single off note, inspiring, passionate, clean. Just beautiful. My favorite rendition since i was a lil girl
I agree. Magnificent.
Absolutely!
This version takes me back in time all the time.
What is your opinion of the images representing Canada in this video? Thx.
I was going to write just that! It gave me goosebumps to hear the violin contrechant I heard so many times as a preschooler all through my childhood and probably my early teens. I’m gonna search for the name of the person who wrote this magnificent arrangement.
My Grandma came to Canada with my parents from HK and made Canada my home. Born and raised in Vancouver... A BC boy, I will always remember this Canadian anthem clip which I watched on TV since I was a kid. thank you Canada for everything! I love this country with all my heart!!!
As an American who loves his National Anthem, this rendition of O Canada...dare I say it's the G.O.A.T.!
The two young children at the end are heart-warming and precious. They represent the future of a proud nation.
Seems to me the older kid was featured in a series of vignettes that aired as part of the Canadian version of Sesame Street.
That final image of the young girl hugging her brother was a classic moment in Canadian life, let alone Canadian TV. Wonder what became of her?
@@stewartlynch7859 Just think: they're both now in their 40s!!
Awww! 🥰😍
My Grandfathers dream coming to this Country from the Netherlands.
Died of Stomach Cancer before I ever met him.
All his children prospered in this great land.
Grand children prospered.
Great Grand Children prospered.
Thank you, Sir
I always loved how diligent the horse looks when it runs..so cute
😂 that’s such a funny takeaway!
Big sister hugging little brother... one of my fondest memories from watching late night canadian TV from my upstairs bedroom here in Erie, PA.
I remember watching this as a little girl every morning in the summer when the channel signed on. I was always the only one awake at that time and the sun would be just coming up. Watching this at that hour always seemed so happy and magical. I especially liked the kids at the end. I wish I could go back to that time when we took pleasure in simple things!
Yes i remember seeing it too on TV. I also thought it was every morning probable on CBC. One person here said it was every night on each TV station.
Hearing this version of O Canada meant that I was up too late.
or too early in the morning!
I saw this during the summer months in my bedroom here in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. God Bless Analog Television.
Im not yet a Canadian, just arrived here in Ottawa 9 months ago,......all I can say is: I LOVE CANADA! I LOVE this country more than than any other place in the WORLD! Im so glad I made the BEST Choice!
May CANADA be blessed as always.
I'm from Watertown NY in northern Ny where we would get Canadian TV stations and when I was a kid this used to come on either early in the morning or late at night, I can't remember, but watching it now brings a tear to me eye. Great respect for Canada!
Likely both as it was typical to run the anthem both for the start of broadcast day as well as its conclusion.
This to me is my childhood and morning cartoons (it was also the sign-in). I saw it for the first time in about i don't know, 25 years or so, about a year ago and i basically broke down crying. It was like an instant warp machine to happier days. Im not gonna lie, i never thought our national anthem was very good, but this is THE best version ive heard anywhere. Towards the end specifically, pretty epic. Beautiful recording of it.
It takes you right back every time you hear it. It is pretty well a perfect rendition of Canada, its people and its spirit.
It's a magnificent anthem (at least before they changed the words). You must have little taste in music.
I can't listen to this version of O Canada without tearing up
The confused miner and slime baby are forever entrenched in my memory. I love this.
Every time I see that miner holding out the phone I keep imagining him saying, "It's for you."
Confused miner 😂😂😂
I can't believe that the iconic 1979 film made by The National Film Board Of Canada's "O Canada (With Glowing Hearts)" is turning 40 this year!
My favourite rendition.....I will listen to it many more times and I am not Canadian.......just fond of great music
It sounds like an eagle or hawk flying through the air. Very majestic.
Childhood!!! Morning sign-on and off at night!! I miss the old days! I like most would relive my childhood! We had it the best!!!
This is my favorite remembrance of TV from days gone by. How I wish that we could return to quality programming such as this. Thank you for posting this example!
One of the most epic matchings of music to film I've ever seen.Just majestic.
When I was residing in Detroit, I would watch CBET-TV 9 in Windsor and this would be played at the end of their broadcast day. It would be followed by the colour bars and in the lower right hand corner of screen would be the call letters with 24-hour digital real time under it.
Amazingly beautiful. This bring me back to my childhood in the 1980s at the end of the day when TV stations were closing. The music and the image are so perfect and touching
A world that no longer exists, and never will again. RIP
I still remember back in the 1970s and into the 80s when they played it in the movie theatres and on TV (Novacoma is right). This is such a beautiful rendition of the song, especially when the little Girl hugs her Brother!
How precious for the little girl gave her brother a hug. Awww! How adorable!
I recall this while residing in Detroit.CBET-TV 9 Windsor would sign off with this anthem then follow with vertical colour test bars and call sign/tv channel/24 hour digital time below test bars in lower right hand corner of screen.
I'm from Detroit too😊! Windsor's TVOntario affiliate (channel 32) also used this video to close their broadcast days as well.
as a kid..when i can't sleep
i watched tv with my
parents..& this always seems to put me to sleep..
my childhood memories...
Canada has the BEST
NATIONAL ANTHEM
(music & lyrics are uplifting)
My favourite version of the anthem. I haven't seen it in years. Shows the length and breadth of our country and the people. Beautiful!
This is Canada defined in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
I miss this version of Canada. :( I also miss this version of CBC.
Loved watching this growing up. Still gives shivers down my spine.
I haven't heard a better rendition than this one
This is my all-time favorite "O Canada"! God, I love this country!!!
The visuals for this are burned into my psyche more then any other rendition. Happy memories.
Always laughed at that kid at the end strangling his sibling with love!
Her sibling after six years I'm the only one who caught on to this
That's my favourite part too. 💓
AHHH YES - the best version ever. I remember this one as a child. And of course Greg Joy clearing the bar in the high jump in the last day of competition in the 1976 Montreal Olympics (that had the nation on edge as we wanted a gold medal - that we never got unfortunately) - Canada - it's a great country !!!
Don't forget about Mr. Bill Mason rocking the rapids in his canoe.
Today, Greg Joy is the last name you want to hear dropped if you are having trouble paying your mortgage or your rent.
@@Stevierschannel sorry, help me understand. What is the background here ?
@@rmcbeth123 Greg Joy is the CEO for the Landlord Tenant Board in Toronto. He signs many of the eviction notices that are served in the city of Toronto.
This version makes me feel all hitchy in my chest. It makes me feel a sense of loss - almost like the best of Canada is past and will never return.
It brings tears to my eyes every time! Anything that makes you FEEL and reminds you that you are indeed a human being is absolutely wonderful.
There's something so comforting about this arrangement. So easy to fall asleep after hering this then the off the air chime. ❤😂
I love this version, brings back Canadian pride from when I was a kid, watching Alex Baumann win gold for Canada in the 1984 LA Games!
This is the anthem that reminds me how fantastic Canada is and how much more it could be.
This is a great version of O Canada. I heard my first foreign national anthem as a kid when CBW 990 was ending its broadcast day. It was fun listening to the hourly weather forecasts (in Celsius).
This version is more majestic than the older version I remember playing on CBW growing up in Kansas.
Vic Vogel's version has definitely grown on me. :)
This brings me back to my early teen years when I would stay up till wee hours of the morning, and watching this on CBC right before the went off the air and before I went to sleep. I love Canada, we are truly the greatest nation in the world!
This is the version of
O Canada that they would play over the PA system everyday in my Public School….still my favourite version ❤️🇨🇦
First gen Canadian immigrant here... I moved to Canada recently and I must say it is the best country on earth for sure... Of course it has its issues like every country, but it's the best.. Love Canada :flag_ca:
My absolute favorite rendition of this wonderful song !
I remember one night, i tuned in to Channel 56 (PBS-Detroit) and they did their weekly sign off and played this after the SSB.
from US to Canada I salute to are faithful allies!
Thanks buddy!
Flynn 🇺🇸🇨🇦🤝
"May these gates never close."
Yes!
OldsVistaCruiser you jinxed us all! lol
the slimy baby finale is iconic. le bebe gluant de la fin est une icône
I am quite sure one of my childhood schools must have recorded this version for the morning anthem because I clearly remember it.
Happy Canada Day to our northern neighbors!
Thanks friendly neighbor to the South 😉
Thank you USA :-)
We need this back again
I grew up with this version and love it very much. Thanks for sharing. :))
Absolutely!
I remember watching this after TV stations went off the air at night.
Fond memories.
No matter how many times I watch this (it has been hundreds), it will always bring a tear to my eye and a swelling of Canadian pride in my heart.
CHOH Ottawa used to play this before they went off the air for the night. They would show the bear in his pyjamas with the candle and the voiceover would say " To all our viewers in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, we wish you all a "good night".❤
Happy 151 my dear Canada, I miss you during the summer months, this brought a tear to my eye
I remember when they used to play this in the movie theaters. God I sound old!
Man I was like 5 in 85 and remember getting goosebumps watching this video on tv
Grew up with this version on French Canadian tv CBC.. good times! Originally from Montreal but had the chance to work in Ontario (near Toronto) and in Nunavut (Iqaluit) for many years.. always been proud to be Canadian
The best version ever composed..brings me back to falling asleep in front of TV and waking up to this video remiding me time to go to bed.. thank you for posting.
I watched this video 6 months ago for good old memories & to share it w/my wife (Russian). With the Olympics spirits, there I am, wanting to watch it & hear it again... It is in my opinion the nicest and most overwhelming version of our anthem. I remember watching it "so many years ago" once a week and being overwhelmed until the last seconds' symbolism of fraternity (older brother holding younger). Pls keep it there as I'll search it again later :-)thks so much.
Ma jeunesse en attendant les dessins animés, wow vraiment de bon souvenir.
Merci pour le post
Haven't seen this video in decades. Great memories of my childhood!
My country I love so much never forgeting my country 🇨🇦
The Final part is just wholesome
The high dive and the music perfect timing still get chills. So hapyy i grew up in a Canada before the monsters took over.
Every kid in my neighbourhood wanted to be a high jumper after watching the dramatic Greg Joy silver medal.
silver for Greg Joy at the BigO 1976...I was a kid, I’ll never forget that jump. Dig the cop and the miner on the phone and the great expanses...ahhh, times when everything wasn’t in yer face bombastic, some smart cookie develops a 70’s retro subdivision I’m buying...
Greatest country on Earth right there, folks! God bless Canada!
I remember watching this version as a kid!!!! So koool to watch it again!!!!
Even though the comments on this stopped over 3 years ago, I only recently stumbled across this and remember when I grew up in Windsor, Ontario, they would show this version at the movie theater when I was a kid before the movie started. Everyone stood up like they were expected to even though nobody was actually taking names. Oh, different times. I think they stopped in the late 80's (I was a teen then).
Hi, Robotsea2009. I'm Corey, and I just subscribed to your Chanel. I remember when this version of o Canada was bailing played when the days tv programming was signing off the air . And i think it was the best version of o Canada, I've seen other versions of the national anthem being played over the years, but this one was the best. As for the woman diver diving off the diving tower, it is Janet nutter. I met her once in Fredericton, new Brunswick, during special Olympics in 1985. I say bring this version of o Canada back. Corey Hansen.
Definitely my fave arrangement of our anthem. Powerful stuff indeed.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
how amazing. the little girl in the end got me. Can someone tell me why CBC has stopped doing this when they sign on in the morning and off at night?
+Devon They don't sign off anymore, it is 24/7
+Richard Neault God, how I miss analog television and being able to tune in Canadian Television from Erie, Pennsylvania here in the states.
idk
@@AMDave1023 That's funny. At Super Bowl time we tune into Ch 12 Erie, Fox 29 or WIVB Buffalo to get the non- Canadian broadcasts. Close neighbors, indeed.
They hate their nation nowadays
The busy street scene is definitely Montreal, as their is an ad for The Gazette evident in the background, in that paper's lovely old font.
Oh, that kiss is just perfection!
I must have seen this any number of times from across the river in Detroit. Great stuff!
I remember that part, so sweet!
Classic, classic version of the national anthem.
Musically, I'd say this is the best version I've heard in my life so far. I haven't heard a great electric guitar version of the anthem yet (just some mediocre to good ranged stuff).
I wish that I knew the names of the children at the end, so that I may thank them for bringing joy to my home for many, many nights during the summer. I would love to contact them through Facebook.
I would like to know where all these people are now including that girl diving that would be interesting
Wow beautiful! Need updated version
the best!!!! i remember the video too. great time
The maple leaf forever will remain the true anthem.
Oh Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. Car ton bras sait porter l'épée, il sait porter la croix! Ton histoire de t'une épopée des plus brillants exploits. God keep our land glorious and free! Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee! Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
@emh224 I must admit to it. Many times. I´m not Canadian (wish I was), but I´ve been there four times. I miss Canada (and her) so much. You guys have a great country, long live Canada!!
Happy 150th birthday to our northern neighbors!
I'm from Montreal. So proud to be Canadian! Brings me emotions each time I hear this version!
The imagery is so great. I especially love that it starts with a first nation dog sled team. I don't know if my memories are just confused or it is a South Western Ontario thing but I also remember a version that included the high jump in this video and the Caber toss at the Fergus Highland Games. My family only received Global and CTV which seem to have used this version many times but I can't get it out of my head I have seen a version with the Caber toss.
I love this version of the anthem and I remember that Montreal traffic cop from the 60s !!!
OMG, I remember this video/commercial. If I remember correctly, it was shown before a movie played in the Movie Theatre.
I'd definitely use this for a station if near Canada or in Canada when it leaves the air.
Thanks for putting that up!! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
The last shot he won the silver medal on the last day of the Montreal Olympics
Great dramatical instrumental
@AMDave1023 I'm not sure to be honest - the film was edited at the National Film Board from existing footage. Montreal is a safe bet though Quebec City is also glimpsed in the film, and most likely Toronto too.
