  • In this 7-month update video, I cover some of the challenges we've faced in Singapore’s rental market and rental hikes (in 2023), and where we've been living since moving here. I also talk about how plans might not work out and the emotional challenges of this huge relocation. Singapore is the second most expensive city in the world (after New York City), so if you’re moving to Singapore 2024, this video will reveal some of what to (possibly) expect in 2024. I hope you enjoy the video - like and subscribe for more. In the meantime, thank you so much for watching :) Happy New Year 2024!!! 🇸🇬❤️. A short film.
btw: the December rains part of this video includes some lines from a famous movie - do you know from which one? :)
    Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish:
We went too far in our thinking
And forgot that destinies are written.

Love your storytelling. I moved from Woking (Surrey) to Sydney. Sure you can have as much planning and control in your life as you want. But make sure you have some friends in Singapore, who you can meet for having good time. Otherwise, the next time you go back to London and meet your friends, you won’t feel like going back to Singapore again.

I have lived in Singapore for 38 years. I have friends from Australia & USA who intend to migrate to Singapore, thinking it's a small city state in Asia, where an expat will be highly valued. They thought, we need English teachers, we still live in jungle, and since it's part of Asia, it must be cheap. I told them : Give it trial run, at least 3 - 6 months! They were shocked at how modern it is, almost everything runs on auto & digital. Their wives & daughters are safe back at the apartment at 2 am after dancing at the clubs, took taxi. All these infrastructure cost money, so is safety. Heck, Singapore was even once import drinking water! Singapore's cost of living is high. Employment is tight & competitive. Somebody from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar will be ready to do your type of jobs, for lower price. Since the pandemic, when most of workforce chose to work from home, the rental of apartment has been skyrocketing. It's what it's. My take is: You can't be poor in Singapore, life will be miserable.

@@vrindanambiar4470 Singapore has diverse residential area. $10k a month for 2 persons is good enough, if you know how to budget properly. Eg. Stay at suburban, where the apartment rental is cheaper. Supermarket products are cheaper - this is where the locals shop. The wet markets are plenty, where you could get fresh produce eg : meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. Restaurant prices downtown is expensive, but many cafe & food court & fast food joints are relatively cheap. Don't worry about transport, Singapore is an island, everywhere is connected by MRT (train) and buses. These public transport is cheap. Don't buy car. Car in Singapore is 4x the price in Europe & USA.

I just wrote an equivalent assessment of Sydney based on your honesty but it turned from a dirge into a novella. In my case i was sizing up the impact of living conditions on personal connections. The short version is Sydney was recently voted the third least friendly city on earth and although I'm not widely travelled, this rang true for me, when this definitely wasn't always the case. I think this is a place where the impact of changing economics on culture and interpersonal relationships is stark. To the extent that even relative wealth, as well, is arguably not enough to sustain you here. It was once a place where you could still have an interesting life with warmth in it even if you were not wealthy. I miss those days terribly. It just became incrementally less and less like that. I've sometimes said that living in Sydney feels like living with someone you've broken up with. It's like you need to grieve but instead you can't distance yourself, all the time. I don't know if that makes any sense, I've never lived with an ex. I've also said it's like living with a ghost city superimposed onto the one you see, where you're haunted. It sounds a bit emo and gentrification in cities is common, I'm not as young as i was, and i am also depressed. Which is why when i saw that vote of unfriendliness it was like a revelation.
It's hard to put my finger on things that might be universal rather than my particulars, at least without waffling. I can almost explain it like an infection where you could almost unconsciously start to become part of an atmosphere you hate just by trying to subsist and get by. If we take the idea of avoidance of eye contact on public transport as a reference point, it's both super unfriendly and there's also reasons this behaviour is learned over time, until you may practice it yourself unconsciously without a second thought.
I think one of my biggest worries about this place is that it hardens people and arguably you will be in some degree of danger here if you cannot foster this trait. It's a dog eat dog world and if you tend to get anxious under stupid amounts of pressure, please stay far away if you can, I feel like joyful people could wind uo leading a joyless existence here. It could still change again, but it could be argued the city has always had traits from its colonial inception that are rotten to the core.
John Birmingham who wrote He Died With A Felafel In His Hand wrote a history of the seamier side of Sydney called Leviathan, and this is a reminder to myself to read it.

@@vrindanambiar4470 As a total salary, that would be the middle income. If you mean sgd 10k in saving and no income, then it's easily gone in 2-6 months depending on your rent and lifestyle. Rent would be your biggest expense.

Learn to adapt. Expect the unexpected no matter how well you have planned because there will be factors which are not in your control. Simply put, the world is not perfect, and we all live in this imperfect world. As long as you moderate your expectation and loosen up a bit in your strive for perfection, you will find life less stressful and acceptable. It's all in the mind. Sometimes, just accept reality as is. It is what it is. You would probably be happier. Look for the sunshine, not the rain. Be optimistic.

Sg is branded as the most expensive city to lived in due to bias reporting based on expat living their full western lifestyle without adapting to Sg local lifestyle. Cars ownership are purposely made costly to limit the need to expand roads infrastructure in limited land in this small island. But this is grossly compensated by the public transport (trains & bus & taxis ) systems. Housing rentals has escalated in 2022 largely due to the huge surge of expats, foreign companies and Chinese relocating to Sg from China & Hong Kong. Also the downturn of global economy coupled with the Ukraine / Russia war affecting EU countries, UK and US, many westerners plus some Indian nationals also relocate to Sg due to Sg’s stability. This aggravated rental market chasing the steep rise. The cheaper way is to rent and live in our HDB flats which is much more affordable than condominium and landed properties.

Don’t rent condominium or private house. Rent a HDB flat, it’s definitely cheaper. Eat at our food courts or local markets, buy groceries from Supermarkets like Giant, NTUC or Sheng Siong, stay away from Cold Storage. The best bargains are from Sheng Siong. If you live like a local, you’ll find everything is affordable and not expensive at all. Take public transports, buses and MRT are also very cheap.

Not only is it a pleasure to listen to your soothing accent (so smooth - you would be amazing at bedtime stories for adults!), the responses you have evoked here from locals who are proud of their home are genuinely interesting to stumble across as a neighbouring Australian. Enough to forgive you for that click bait!
Wishing you and your husband as well as your viewers all the best.
Finally, as an aside, to the Singaporeans that are struggling to find a home in the current atmosphere, you are in my thoughts now that i know. i hope it gets better. I appreciate the pride you have in your country in spite of this difficulty, it's quite heartwarming as well as your hospitality to expats even with the housing market in the state it's in. We have similar problems in Sydney yet it looks like the system set up by government in Singapore is very different, so that's really interesting. As an Australian, we don't always hear a lot about Singapore in general so i enjoyed seeing lots of comments by locals, especially outside of a political subject. And Meta, you were able to evoke this commentary, more please (:
    Cheers! ✌️

I’m a Singaporean who moved to London six years ago. The tropical thunderstorms are what I miss the most, and when London skies are generous enough to provide a little shower, it almost feels like home. All the rain footage in your video brought lots of comfort (thank you!) and I’m glad that you’re finding joy in some of it too. I grew up learning to work around it - to clock in a good nap, enjoy the indoors, or linger a little longer at the coffee shops and order a second teh tarik. I hope you find some form of home and what works for you in singapore. It already looks like you’ve managed to over the course of a few months, which is commendable. All the best ❤

I love hearing from Singaporeans living abroad! How are you in London? I hope you’re enjoying my beautiful city. I hear rents have been wild there too, hope you’ve not been affected too much and still enjoying the UK. Thank you for your kind comment and so happy the Singapore rains part gave you a little bit of home. I’ve always hated rain, but not in Singapore ❤️

    • @butterbatt3r
      @butterbatt3r 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Thank you! It’s not been 100% smooth for sure, but I’ve definitely experienced some incredible things here that I wouldn’t have been able to in my safety net. Rent’s been wild here too - albeit not as bad as Singapore - and we’re definitely feeling the pinch in other areas. Also, random suggestion, do try a kayaking trail whilst you’re there! Our mangroves are really unique (and fading) and it’s quite calming being in the middle of it all at sunrise. I try to join one whenever I’m back for Christmas and it’s a really special experience you can only get in the tropics :)

This is a beautiful little short video. I too moved to Singapore for higher education last year with big plans and a dream. Things didn’t go as per plan and I’ve always had to redirect efforts and change the course of action. What I loved about your video is how you’ve been able to still make sense of it all despite the obvious disappointments we do face. We can only truly hope for the best but ultimately what’s written will manifest, the rest is just our emotions, thoughts, anxiety and fear that’s holding us back or clouding judgement. Moving wasn’t the easiest but I don’t regret taking the plunge and I suppose life is what you make of it but also what’s in store for you. However through it all, it’s important to take each day as it comes and appreciate the time we have and be happy in the present which is a much more healthier way to go about life. Deep underlying messages and I’m glad that I can relate to this and that there are other people who are also going through the same feelings and emotions.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It means a lot and I know it will mean so much to others who have or are going through this anywhere in the world. Everything you wrote resonates with me, and exactly why I made the video to share, so thank you so much for being here 🙏🏽 I’m sorry that life didn’t turn out as expected, life is so funny like that, especially when we feel so sure of things and have dreamt it for a long time. I truly believe: What's meant for you will never miss you and what missed you was never meant for you ❤️ So I am wishing and 🙏🏽 that the path you are on now, created by your experiences, leads you to success, great love, rest and peace ☺️ Please take care ❤️

They have a video whereby they interviewed Chris, an expat from UK who lived in Singapore for 5 years. He talked about his salary and his job here. And how he felt he couldn't fit in here in Singapore initially and where he stayed. And later how he managed to adapt. I thought it might be helpful to connect with other expats and share experiences. It will be great too to know the locals and make new friends to get helpful tips. It's always comforting to have friends around in a foreign country. ;) Happy New Year to you both and Fighting!!!!💪😂

I tend to do my filming and writing privately 🙈Having friends has been very helpful and you’re right, community and support is so important. This video is about my expectations vs (an evolving) reality in the face of making plans, and I’ve learnt a lot as the market changed quite quickly in a short space of time (grateful for life’s teachings), which is affecting people in different ways. But we are looking forward to what 2023 brings and feel so happy to be in Singapore. We loved the festive season and can’t wait for CNY! 🎉Thank you for your lovely, supportive comment - you are very kind. I will check out the video you suggested. Wishing you the best for 2023 🥰❤️🥰

I just came back from Malaysia after visiting some relatives.
    Inflation there is crazy.
For locals, their daily necessities is way more expensive for locals earning ringgit.
Even their so called subsidise petrol is 😅
In fact, normal people like us,no matter where,Inflation hit many of us.
As for housing in Singapore, like what some mentioned, the housing market is crazy because of many expats moving here which pushes up the rental market.
One more thing is that during the last 2 years covid, there was not enough manpower building new houses.
Now manpower is back, the building of new houses is starting to get back into shape,so hopefully in a year or 2,the market will be lowered or at least stabilise.
There's always light at the end of the tunnel!
    Keep going👍

This is such a well articulated and resonant video. It's so refreshing to hear your experience narrated in a calm, genuine, and rhythmic way. I also wanted to say I am equally susceptible to planning and over-planning and at present I have mapped out the next 3-5 years of what I want/ expect my life to look like, recognising the risks that come with trying to plan so far ahead. I cannot be certain where I will end up in the coming years, but I hope wherever I am, I am without regret. :)

What a great video and narration! I can totally relate that Singapore is a bustling and beautiful city. Yes it's expensive but that's mostly due to being in the Central or city Area. Try staying in outer region or the heartlands and it's just as bustling and rents are way affordable. Heartlands are still well connected to the city easily. It all depends on your wants and needs. If you can financially sustain during your short term stay here, then go for it! Best wishes to you and your hubs and hope you enjoy it here more!

I tried the Heartlands before leaving Singapore. It's just as expensive maybe only about $500 cheaper than central. It's not worth it (for me anyway) because it's too far out for people who need to be in the office some days, have friends in central and the time in unsheltered walk to MRTs aint worth it. I also hate Grab in Singapore. But Singapore is a great place but Rental market has really made people think twice

@@hollanda500 agreed regarding HDB rents, even in the Heartlands, are not much better as we and many others have been looking. In our opinion, this rental market is unsustainable, for both foreigners and locals.

Glad to see that you are settling down well here and enjoying each moment of your life. We welcome you. If you are planning to settle down is Sg, do consider buying a small condo unit as money paid for a property will always be your own money unlike renting one.

Just like to give you a little bit of heart for this lovely video. I know it seems tough, and I came across your video as I am a Singaporean man myself who have made a move to Canada during the pandemic. It's really profound to watch a reversal of roles. And to understand human beings are all trying to enrich their lived experiences. My home country may seem relentless and nobullshitty - but if you do make some friends along the way, I want to implore it will be less alone and tiresome. I love the title - and the narration - it was your way of expressing your art so please continue being you!

Hi Sy! I always love to hear from people who are or have also experienced moving abroad and starting from scratch elsewhere. It is such an incredible human experience, both hard and enjoyable simultaneously, and it really tests our openness to others and the world ❤️ Your comment here and compassion really shows that - thank you for being here and leaving such kind words with understanding of what my channel is about. It means a lot. Also, I love the word nobullshitty. I shall use this from now on! 😁

Great video, please could I ask if you hold a UK passport, what visa did you get and how did you get it to allow you to stay in Singapore for so long? Many thanks! My family is planning to go too.

Most people who move to Singapore do not really understand the related costs of living the same lifestyle as back home in US or UK or Australia . Once they try to settle down here they realize it is very different ( cost , culture , location etc ) and have to adapt fast to what they have been given or regret . " The secret of being happy is accepting where and how you are in life now and making the most everyday whatever card you are being dealt with...the good, the bad and the in betweens "
