My backstory: Back in the late 2000's to early 2010's, in my home country (Philippines), I was one of the luckiest boys to obtain the American Nintendo 64 (that originally bought from my relatives, yes, my Filipino relatives in the US), and then tried playing that game (although take note that I played it under 18 years old - since that game is Rated M for Mature). At that time, I was neatly between 9 to 13 years of age). Yeah, I was just scared of the crushing ceiling but at the same time - really amazed (in good impressions) on how they'd worked in the game. And then, I just got a bit frustrated that eventually, turned off the system, and then I changed the game (e.g. Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Pokémon Puzzle League, Pokémon Snap, Star Wars Episode I: Racer, etc.), 'cause I just got sucked (being a "wuss", in other words). But yeah, as time passes, I fully acknowledged of my past mistakes, and then I got the point where I simply enjoyed, and having much more knowledge about the Doom maps structure/architecture on this day while it lasts (probably better this time). === End of backstory == Plus, recently, Doom 64: Retribution for PC (mod for Doom 2) is just stunning to play; how much modern times could possibly be. Another thing is, he (FP) missed to discuss the PSX (the PlayStation) version of Doom, whereas the ambience went there in the Doom 64 version (very big thanks to Aubrey Hodges' terrific masterpiece on making his music, for real) - although that was also the integrated part of Final Doom moments (plus OG Doom and Doom 2). Since then, Doom 64 is one of my favorite series so far, as I could imagine to be an aspiring "all-in-one" video game developer (not just programming, but also creating graphics, "test-play", making sound effects and so much more to deal with) in the future. By the way, very comprehensive and in-depth detail of this review so far, so good!

The aestethics of episodes I, II and III, are great example of storytelling through level design. Knee Deep in the Dead: You're in a space station in Mars, so lots of tech textures and computers, the demonic imagery only in secret areas. Shores of Hell: The demons are merging Hell into the station, one room you're in a facility, another you're stepping into a cave with lava, in the end we come to find the base is actually floating over Hell. Inferno: Finally you are in Hell itself, so there is no shying away from the demonic imagery, gore and all the temples and weird structures.
Totally agree with you. But it just struck me the other day: even in E1M1, the exit is flanked by those creepy candlesticks. Hell is creeping through, little by little, from the very beginning.
As fun as DOOM is I massively prerer DOOM2 over it. Addition of six new enemies adds so much variety to enemy encounters. PS1-port of DOOM was great adding those DOOM2-enemies to levels of original DOOM.
I 100 percent agree with your opening statement "that it is one of the best fps of all time!" This classic franchise is so good in fact that i haven't even played doom eternal yet and purchased it on day one and the reason........it came with doom 64, haha! i got so preoccupied with playing a classic loaded with a brand new episode in celebration of the new game coming out that i didnt even play the new game! the NINTENDO 64 system didnt do the classic justice and I hardly finished on that system. now ive played it all the way through on pc and adding it my favorite classic doom games of all time list! anyways, i love revisting these classics with you and I think its great to hear what you consider are some of their flaws, as they definitely have em, no matter how good they are (especially in level design consistency!) anyways, your videos are spot on and i think we all appreciate your take on this game!
Sandy Petersen's biggest achievement was definitely Call of Cthulhu, but playing that game gives me a lot of appreciation for his maps. He played into the Lovecraftian horror angle of Doom in a way that I don't think Romero was even thinking about.
Plutonia is my favorite. Its so challenging and its speed and brutality reminds me of Half Life on Hard. Fun fact, Dario Casali was a level designer for Valve and made a lot of Half Life levels! Great Video!

I’m so glad that id Software went with Demons for DOOM’s enemies. They seriously gave us some of the best Demon designs ever made and they will always be absolute classics.
Doom 64 is definitely my favorite one. Solid game and the first I ever played throughout the classics. Its textures, maps, sci-fi and hellish fellings are simply a way better and evolved version of the classics. The only cons I can see is indeed the lack of some classic enemies, weapon animations and lack of rock/metal soundtracks, with this last one being very debatable since even tho I'm huge advocate for metal music on Doom games, I still appreciate the more eerie, horror feeling that the ambient Doom 64's soundtracks provided. Some of them are extremely creepy asf. Doom 64 is also a big improvement regarding sounds and weapon designs. It has my favorite Plasma Rifle across all Doom games (even the most modern ones) and everything sounds overall better than the Doom 1 and 2. It's a shame the game isn't extensively appreciated by all Doom fans like the rest of the classics.
Wow. . . I just got my mind blown by a game and my most favorite game to be exact, that I've been playing since I could even play games. . . I had no unearthly idea that the Tower of Babel was actively and noticeably being built with each time you complete a level. . . Wow dude. 👽
The amazing thing about DOOM is that all entries in the main-line of games are simply fantastic - all in their own way... I've enjoyed every game around the releases and replayed them all many times. The definition of solid shooters.
I beat spider demon for the first time ever with pistol starter and I was so amazed when I beat him, I feel like that’s the way to experience that level, near death with no weapons lmao
for me, thy flesh consumed is the absolute worst doom episode because its basically as confusing as doom II's city levels, and the worst level is E4M6 with that god awful teleporter that teleports you depending on what direction you come from
I first played Doom at the age of 9 in 2015. It seems stupid, but its cool to see how this amazing game has lived on for decades and hopefully will for many more.
@@randalhopkins9984 that makes me smile, I played these as a kid in 90s and it's amazing that 2010s kids have too, especially given the bloated/overly informative games of today.
Don't get me wrong I love Rip and Tear and The Only Thing They Fear Is You. But At Doom's Gate will in my opinion forever be the DOOM Slayer/DOOM series main theme. Because it's 1st song in the entire series that introduces you to DOOM!!!!!!!!
I think e1m8 is awesome. It has a creepy atmosphere about it. The music helps a lot. It never bothered me how different it was to the rest of the episode. Not when I was 13 and not now at 41.
you can what you want about Sandy Petersen, but he pushed the gameplay and level design of shooters forward. he singlehandely did alot of things that have never been done before.
I know you turned off filtering after someone mentioned it to you, but for anybody else getting into classic doom and brutal doom etc, go into the settings and turn off all texture filtering, you can change the dynamic lighting and stuff like that and blood particles, but when you filter the textures, it looks like Vaseline has been smeared over the screen instead of that lovely crunchiness we all like. Obviously it's up to the player what they do but some folk don't realise they have those filters on.
I would love to see the classic Doom 1 "You are here!" map-to-map 'map' or rather map interface. It gave a real sense of adventure and progression (especially in Episode 2 with the Tower construction). Doom 2 having a single static, if slightly disturbing, image between each map just made the game feel like a load of increasingly difficult random maps, leaving the "story" to the intermission text.
Just found you the other day, very good review, subscribed and look forward to more videos. You sound familiar, do you have another channel? Maybe one based around Runescape or Yugioh or something? Edit: correction, apparently Ive come across your Doom Zero videos too, but you still sound super familiar, like Ive watched another channel of yours.
I have only ever played Evilution and Plutonia with Brutal Doom mods... I assume that makes them significantly harder. My favorite is Plutonia... especially level one... rain? In a Doom game? Nice! I know that's the case regarding Doom, Doom II, and Doom 64. I beat them back when they first came out... and trying them again with Brutal mods felt like a whole new experience! Doom 64 is my favorite Doom game... I just wish they could've included Archviles, Revenants, and Chaingun Zombies, instead of adding "new" variations of Pinkies and Imps... Edit: BRUTAL Plutonia Experiment... it has the axe! Edit 2: I've played "Perdition's Gate", but only with Brutal mods...seems pretty cool, but I haven't played it a ton yet. Maybe give it a try with BRUTAL mods? Anyway, great video dude. Coming from a 42 year old decades long DOOMER! DOOM 3 GETS TOO MUCH HATE!
This is really impressive dude. I've been working my way up the Doom chain in regards to reviewing the franchise. Might have to up my game here, Ultimate Ultimate Ultra Doom Review -- 6 Hours long coming up.
Constructive Criticism: You've got a few too many points that you lifted straight from Civvie, brother. I'm not saying that you can't come to the same conclusions as him, that would be absurd. It's not like Civvie is the first person to ever realize that Plutonia uses hidden Archviles to resurrect Chaingunners forever, or that it has a lot of Revenants, or that Plutonia demonstrates a strong understanding of the monster's abilities and how they can play off each other to challenge the player, but I think you need to try and say it in your own way. Civvie was on my "bedtime" playlist for a good while, so I probably listened to his Doom videos too many times, but I hear _a lot_ of points that are phrased almost identically, or like you wanted to make the same point and just tried to swap out a word or two like how high schoolers do when they're trying to pad out an essay with paragraphs they're stealing from someone else's essay they found online. Not a bad video, and this tendency didn't really register with me until you were about halfway through Doom 2, but it became especially noticeable when you got into Plutonia. I'm guessing that you might have been burning out a bit during the script writing process around this point and maybe weren't proof-reading as thoroughly. You just gotta be careful about stuff like that. Not because I think you did anything that was plagiarism, or anything like that. But mostly because you want to find your own voice and perspective. There's a thousand other people out there that can give people on TH-cam a copycat of already-successful channels, which means a lot more competition. But there's only one of your perspective.
I will never get tired of videos talking about DooM. I might make my own some time just for fun even. Also, anyone ever notice that NME is similar to E2M1?
If you were able to get a bunch of guns and ammo before e2m2 it would utterly ruin the map. The map is designed to teach you how to use berserk, and it relies on giving you extremely limited ammo from the start. You have to tread carefully and isolate as many easy 1on 1 engagements as possible while dodging fireballs. If you even had 50 shotgun shells the level would be trivial and there would be no incentive to explore. On my first play through I found the berserk mechanic so fun I decided to challenge myself and beat the level using only punches. It took me hours of attempts but I eventually got it, and it was really satisfying. The idea of only spawning imps and pinkies, which don’t drop ammo was genius and it may be my favourite level in the original game.
I somewhat disagree about sprinting. The walking speed in-game is similar to real-life sprint speed. I'm a big co-op guy, and sprinting ruins co-op imo as it just turns in to people scrambling around the map looking for keys, not really fighting and working together. Walking is plenty fast enough.
I think the main reason every user made WAD copies map 07's concept is just because that map is hard coded to have special conditions activate on monster death.
my problem with doom 1 e4e2 is that sprinting is required and i notice that design philosophy is present in doom 2 a lot too. on my first playthrough i didn’t even know that sprinting was possible! so getting to the ledge from the starting area feels impossible
Do you actually like that bilinear texture filtering that's destroying the pixel art and covering the image with Vaseline or unaware that you can fix it in display options / texture options. If anything I would suggest none (nearest mipmap) with ansiotropic turned to 16x. That will make everything so much clearer for you
Not to be a hipsters, but I was a fan of Doom 64 back in the day. I pored over the previews of it in Nintendo Power every morning, just drooling over how the game looked. If you just took a second to look at the game, it was blatantly obvious that it wasn't just a port. It was something unique, but still Doom to the core. I'm glad everyone else is getting the chance to play it and am overjoyed that it got a port to PC.
All the best maps are the industrial maps. The grey concrete walls, the metal overhead doors, the computer screens in the walls etc. Once you get to the levels where everything is wood doors, flesh walls and devil face switches, I kind of hate the aesthetic, even if the maps themselves are good.
One thing people always forget to mention about DooM is the fact that is also a bit dull. The fact that the story is completely secondary and the fact that the only purpose of the game is to go through shoot a lot of things having a good time makes it also a bit boring.
Hey fp you gotta check out a couple of the newer megawads specifically ancient aliens alien vendetta and sunlust and maybe back to saturn x ep 1 and 2 they will blow your mind to see how far doom has come in its classic form
I am not sure if I can count Doom or Doom 2 as the greatest fps games of all time, but I can definately agree that they are the most important and many modern games, not just FPS games, owe much to Doom.

"Being a pedantic fuck about DOOM expansion packs aside" 🤣🤣 Class video, the 3 hours flew by
I would love to see the classic Doom 1 "You are here!" map-to-map 'map' or rather map interface. It gave a real sense of adventure and progression (especially in Episode 2 with the Tower construction). Doom 2 having a single static, if slightly disturbing, image between each map just made the game feel like a load of increasingly difficult random maps, leaving the "story" to the intermission text.
I love your videos.... but one small problem.... texture filtered doom looks really cursed 💀
ya
You turned off texture filtering for doom 64 but not for doom 1 and 2? Unbelievable
Because texture filter on 64 is horrid
Just found you the other day, very good review, subscribed and look forward to more videos. You sound familiar, do you have another channel? Maybe one based around Runescape or Yugioh or something?
Edit: correction, apparently Ive come across your Doom Zero videos too, but you still sound super familiar, like Ive watched another channel of yours.
Well done. 👍
He’s a noob. He’s a noob to the classics. I never want to hear his terrible opinion ever again.
NME?
15:45, funny that you say that because while I am playing this video I am actually revising E1M8 to my liking (editing the map)
There is a reference in Half-life 2 to he MAP23: Barrels o' Fun - IN HL2 there is an area full of exploding barrels.
Love these long length doom video essays, keep em coming!🙌🏻
I WANT that E1M1 remix at the start!
you shouldv turned off bi-linear texture filtering.
Take a shot every time he says Doom Twoey
A 3 hour discussion about an almost 30 year old game. DOOM is truly timeless.
I like your review, I am shocked with how many doom 2 maps you don't like though!
And now we have Legacy of Rust, and it is glorious.
holly fuck i gotta cook some popcorn
I like that your voice sounds pretty close to that classic 2000s speech synthesizer. It's like they based it on you :D
I had NO fucking idea that the tower on Episode 2s mission screen builds up over time, in over 30 years of playing this game.. WTF!
I think the main reason every user made WAD copies map 07's concept is just because that map is hard coded to have special conditions activate on monster death.
I needed 3 diffrent attempts from a pistol start to finish refueling base... and I loced it.
my problem with doom 1 e4e2 is that sprinting is required and i notice that design philosophy is present in doom 2 a lot too.
on my first playthrough i didn’t even know that sprinting was possible! so getting to the ledge from the starting area feels impossible
Not gonna lie, I always thought "O of destruction" (or as I read it as "circle of destruction") was a reference to Battery.
Do you actually like that bilinear texture filtering that's destroying the pixel art and covering the image with Vaseline or unaware that you can fix it in display options / texture options. If anything I would suggest none (nearest mipmap) with ansiotropic turned to 16x. That will make everything so much clearer for you
If you don't like it, you don't use it. Others like it.
I'm glad everyone else is getting the chance to play it and am overjoyed that it got a port to PC.
theres actually 8 weapons in the original doom:
Fist
Chainsaw
Pistol
Shotgun
Chaingun
Rocket Launcher
Plasma Rifle
BFG 9000
All the best maps are the industrial maps. The grey concrete walls, the metal overhead doors, the computer screens in the walls etc. Once you get to the levels where everything is wood doors, flesh walls and devil face switches, I kind of hate the aesthetic, even if the maps themselves are good.
"Doom...Gets most questionable around it's middle half" -idk I think Civvie11 might've said this
What's O of destruction referencing? What's that sprite shown with the rake?
Wolfenstein might be the grandfather of all shooting games...
but DOOM is the *grandaddy* of all shooting games
How long did this video take to make? This looks very high effort
This video is the best movie that I've ever seen lol.
I love you so much for making this video you're the coolest
Great video - thanks a lot
This is a good 3 hours right here.
Doom Zero was great and Eviternity has the best maps I've played in years.
@@priestfan81 I think a lot of the mappers that made eviternity made ancient aliens too I know skill saw definitely made some on both
I am not sure if I can count Doom or Doom 2 as the greatest fps games of all time, but I can definately agree that they are the most important and many modern games, not just FPS games, owe much to Doom.
What the hell is 'woof'enstein?
Booyeah Frozen Particle (former channel name, keep it) doing my favourite game.
I watched this entire video while playing DOOM on my Game Boy Advance. This was amazing content and I loved listening to it in the background. I beat the whole entire game, about 5 minutes before your video was over.
"It's been a decade since I've started playing Doom and I still can't be assed figuring out which teleporter goes where"
Me playing since release and still brute forcing this level 👀
1:34:35 purest example of sheer panic right there
Masterpiece.
my son at 9 years ago called the microwave mod the ghost buster gun😂
