Yes please, I am interested in both. In reality I am interested in G9 mk ii/vs OM-1 but the GH6 gives us an insight of what my G9 successor could be. I like what I see in the GH6. I can imagine what a GH6 stripped down of video features could be. Oh Panasonic please, just do it. And DPReview please make that comparision.
This again is what I expect from you guys. Well informed and useful guidance. I'd like to also see GH6 vs. S5 and also let's just put it out there...the A7S3.
@@JKastle007 No C4k, barely native Sony lenses with no breathing, no waveform, no shutter angle, high detail loss at high iso, poor skin tones, more inflexible screen, slog is much worse to grade than vlog, poor menu navigation etc. A7SIII is twice as expensive. @@db6572 Semantics and purely subjective. Speaking from experience Vlog is not better to grade than Slog. ISO performance on the A7S3 is great. Simply cranking up the iso on any camera will affect image quality. At the end of the day a full frame sensor will always best a M4/3 sensor. Agreed of the price point but in that case go with a S5 or A74.
thank you for this unbiased review. and to me the auto focus looks real good i didn't see any pulsing and i was watching on a 75 inch TV... i have 3 GH5's this is a HUGE improvement on something that wasn't as bad as many claim...(i learned how to get the best out of the older DFD) those that are haters go ahead get a different camera but for those of us that will use the gh6 daily better for us! this camera is more of a game changer than many are giving credit.....
At 7:11 you have reproduced a problem pointed out by Gerald Undone. Colour streaks of noise propagating from focus gear edges. And these are vertical, so it is not banding. Did you report it to Panasonic?
You guys have become the very very best at this kind of review. Really clear, well organised and useful info. Keep at it! You are THE best source of help for vloggers and you tubers.
I have both the GH6 and the S1, the GH6 is fantastic in daylight ! But also surprisingly clean in low light till ISO 3200, but in order to get this performance, it uses a lot of noise reduction (like Sony) and detail filtering. The result is a not very detailed picture in 4K in low light even at ISO 200, some area are ok, but some don't, it is weird, a bit like Samsung did with the NX1 (For connoisseurs). A few people talk about this but it is obvious when comparing with the GH5 or the S1. It is very good for people who like soft and clean footage straight out of camera but it could be nice to get a firmware update to have the possibility to reduce even more the noise reduction and the details filtering.
Thanks Jordan and Chris for another great review! If Panasonic would add these features -- especially the four channel audio and internal ProRes -- to the S1H Mark ii, they'd have an absolutely killer camera for doc work. Are there any indications when an S1H Mark ii might be coming? Later in 2022?
@@Whatsup_Abroad True. It does seem like a very capable doc camera. What the S1H mark II would add is better dynamic range and better low light capabilities (and hopefully internal ND!), which in doc settings would be very handy.
Internal pro res is very unlike because of SD card speed. The GH6 can’t record ProRes to its SD card, only the CFe. Not sure about 4ch audio. Maybe possible? They are different engines though and the GH6 now supports 24 bit 96khz so likely have a hardware change
All the S-Series cameras would work great for doc work, especially with that audio interface mentioned. 24p and some 60p are really all you need. Super high frame rates are nice to haves. And the timelapse feature is amazing on them too. It's already available.
Great comparison! I was watching and overall really enjoyed it. Client work will be fine even with Autofocus and GH6 as many dont notice the issues. There was one spot I personally noticed at 10:18 with autofocus getting soft but I am a pro and doubt that any customer would notice or care. TH-camrs blow the autofocus issues way out of proportion. If you are talking the top pros for major commercial clients then yes, they need something better like Sony A7S iii but at that level you should be (and most I work with do) use a Sony FS7, FX6 or similar, a Sony FX3 is passable at that level and Sony A7S iii is barely an option but still a contender before we talk about RED cameras at the top pro level. For most average client work, we are talking local commercials, budgets of less than $10K, the GH6 will be more than adequate for that. Dont hassle yourself on specs. I purchased the Sony A7IV only to return it because I do think that camera is overpriced for what it is. They really call it a "beginner" and even "student" camera when I was in the photo store which is crazy to me with the price it is but when using it I see why they say that. So I do think that is priced how it should be but is overpriced if that makes sense. The GH6 will nail it for years to come with all the photo modes and the worst news is that it works the same autofocus-wise as the GH5 which every single GH5 owner does not care about. Sure, they are losing some Canon and Sony crossover who want to switch over but at this point Panasonic seems more inclined to take care of their existing user base which is fine by me. If they happen to figure out the autofocus issue in the future then that is just gravy for us fanboys.
I agree with you. I also think that slight focus softness at that time isn’t any worse than what we would see anyway if the camera was just set to AF anyway and Jordan made natural small moves back and forth. While they are better, even the best Sony and Canon systems still have their issues here and there. They also seem to have a more obvious snap into position (that I haven’t yet seen in GH6 footage)
As a GH5 owner, I absolutely care about AF. I’m not sure which clients you’ve working with but “Soft Autofocus” is an absolute deal breaker. What’s the point of dynamic range boost (which is a gimmick btw) when your image is out of focus? As a sports producer/documentary filmmaker, I will not be picking up the GH6 specifically for the terrible AF. It boggles my mind how Panasonic fanboys justify Panasonic refusal to update to a phase detect system. I’m a A7S3 user and will not switch back to Panasonic until they address their AF.
@@JKastle007 have you used other systems too for comparison? None are perfect. I agree GH and DFD are behind and less reliable, but none are anywhere near 100% for client work (without coverage of multicam)
@@walrusgumboot I’ve shot extensively with Canon’s cinema line and Blackmagic as well. Sony offers the best bang for buck of ANY camera brand today. Unless you’re shooting content exclusively for social media or youtube, I would not recommend a M4/3 system let alone the GH6. This could very well be Panasonic’s last M4/3 release. If you’re set on M4/3 then the OM-1 is the future of that system. Otherwise, make the switch and go full frame with the S5. The A74 is also in the same price range and would be a better option.
I'd love to see gh6 + vazen 28 handeld only videos. Shooting anamorphic with no gimbal in a relatively small handheld package is wild. No one could do this type of setup years ago. It's game changing.
Great Video. Thank you. Switching from Canon to Pana Lumix S5 II and 2 bodies, would you recommend 2x S5 II and also with Sigma 60-600mm for Tele or 1x S5II and 1x GH6 with 100-400mm as Tele and for video and photo?
Thanks for the review. Exactly what i was looking for.. I love how you always let us know what camera you are using to shoot your footage. It speaks a lot on itself.. Please compare the GH6 and OM1, next!!
They aren’t very comparable IMO. Video shooting will go to GH6 is almost all settings (except perhaps where AF is very necessary) Photography, most will go to OM-1 (except maybe where resolution is most important. GH6 has higher native sensor resolution but also the 100MP works handheld - and seems to work very well)
Here's hoping that the image processor in the S1, S1H and S5 has the headroom for another AF firmware update. Perhaps Panasonic will bring the AF improvements to these cameras, similar to when they'd brought the G9 and GH5 MKII improvements in firmware 2.0 for the S1 series.
It will be really interesting for me to test GH6 vs. OM-1 for video quality - sharpness, DR, low light noise etc. I know that as video formats, profiles and tools GH6 is clear winner, as for AF and stabilisation is the OM, but how the actual picture is looking is very interesting.
A good idea for an episode. Thanks. For my work (filming narratives), autofocus is a no-no. I do LOVE the IBIS because I'm in love with tracking shots and a steadicam might not be necessary. Super high frame rates are not important to me, but maybe 60 fps would be. Did you notice a magenta tint problem?
The GH6 and the 10-25mm f1.7 is such a good pair for me. On my full frame camera I mainly use 20mm and 50mm at f3.5. I very rarely use continuous AF in video because Im using a Nikon D750 - so the GH6 focus tools and continuous AF in video would work fine for me.
What resonates with me is 'what am I gonna grab to run out the door' and I totally agree that if I'm running outside to shoot a friend talking or something I'm taking the smaller, lighter camera. I love my s1h but sometimes the weight a bulk really get me down. HOWEVER, if I'm putting something on sticks and want a "cinematic" look, I'm absolutely taking the s1h. TLDR; gh6 handle run and gun champ, s1h is for set work
I'd kinda lean towards GH6, just for the sake of keeping things compact. Yeah dynamic range is better in the big bro S1H but isn't a deal breaker for me. Also now that it has the tilt/flip out screen is perfect for what I do.
just sold my 10-25mm leica mft and bought an S5 with the 50mm f1.8. As you said, when it comes to low light and dynamic range, its david vs goliath . Autofocus looks really good here btw, didnt see any pulsing
Funny enough it is the panasonic 10 25 1.7 that interested me if I bought a GH6. The two lenses I use the most on my full frame DSLR are the 20mm and 50mm usually at f3.5. The 10-25 would have been ideal.
@@markshirley01 if you are confident enough to spend the money, get it! It's the best lens I've ever owned! I just Sold it because it re-financed the S5
@@markshirley01 i will see... It should arrive next week but with mft i just miss the background Blur and low light quality that full frame offers. I'm an automotive photographer and want to do more cinematic stuff. You should have a look at hartnett Media or "the lowdown" here in TH-cam. I don't think this is something i could produce with mft gear 🙆
Punching-in while recording finally comes with GH6! A bit disappointed by still sticking to the contrast based system, but being able to punch in while recording will make MF shooting more exciting.
Fascinating thanks for sharing! The real battle would be against the BGH1 that also has 13 stops of DR. I would love to see that comparison in 4k. 10MP big pixel pitch vs 24MP 5.7k downscaled.
Hey guys, it would be great if you compare gh5,gh5s, gh5ii and gh6 altogether although it would be quiet a lot of work. Especially i am wondering how gh5s compares gh6 for video purposes. Thanks for review btw.
Hi Jordan, I'd like to see an explanation of how the high dynamic range captured by a camera is squished down to show to best advantage on a display like a tablet, a tv or even a projection unit. I know it involves gamma curves but I have trouble getting my head around it - what is really going on?
I have two G9 cameras. I love em, obviously, but I thought my upgrade path was going to be a lumix S series camera. Now with the GH6, I don't think so. I think I will stick with MFT and get those f/1.7 twins instead!
spotted the Dji Mic RX/TX on the video :D when is that comming out ? the hissing noise is fixed ? I'm holding on buying the Rode before I get to test the offering from dji..
I'm an S1 shooter by why oh why can't Panasonic get auto-focusing right?! The world would be their oyster if they could nail focusing. But yes I am still hearing the siren song of the GH6, when I really should change systems for better auto-focusing. Ha. Keep up the awesome and entertaining work!.
For this sort of begs the question: if the gh6 can do all this great stuff that’s mostly about great new software/menus and fast processing won’t there likely be a full frame/S1 camera with feature equivalent sometime in the near future? I shot with gh2,3, and 4s for all my event and fast stuff and loved it but used canon for music video and “film” stuff until the s1’s (actually S5 now feels like perfect middle ground for what I do). I just don’t feel like the small frame is a small trade off to make, much as I loved gh’s. It can’t really be compared apples to apples to me they’re such different looks. If/when I’m more flush might just get a gh6 because It’s the pinnacle of my former favorite cam; but for work? People are as shallow as the ‘bokeh’ they gush about so I give ‘em what they want.
Well yeah, technology will keep on trucking along and all the advancements made in the GH6 will make their way to larger sensor cameras eventually. This review/comparison however, is for cameras you can buy now, not the theoretical future.
The AF is interesting. In this, I can't say I noticed enough focus hunting for it to be distracting. Whereas in other people's reviews, it's just been hunting all the time.
EXCELLENT review! Clear, concise, brief, great examples and editing. It's time to TRADE in my GH5 for the GH6! BTW, I bought my GH5 after I saw your recreation of the "funny how?" scene from Goodfellas! After this review and a few others, I'm realizing the GH6 provides the proverbial "most bang for the buck". I REALLY like the 4chan audio capabilities (you forget to mention the higher 96khz audio quality too) and the incredible IBIS! I might be able to sell my Ronin S gimble too! Question: The S1H is "Netflix approved", will the GH6 also be?
Ergonomics and UI play more of a factor than people give credit! Yes its not full frame but that doesnt mean its bad at all and if you can get a good image out of it easier than it will always win to me
Can the GH6 use drag shutter? I rented the S1 a while back and it was able to operate at 1/2 sec shutter speed in manual mode with manual focus. This is a feature I like to use sometimes.
In the Wooden Nichols shoot (a reference to Chris' acting abilities, right?), please throw in the GH5S. I know it doesn't have stabilization (something I don't think that y'all use shooting Wooden Nichols), but it does, at least IMO, have the best video quality of past M43 cameras. Just a thought...
Thanks Jordan for your video-user bias. It is so refreshing to hear actual usability reviews rather than spec sniffing like a truffle hunting pig on some other channels.
what would you choose between gh6 vs fx3? can't tell if im moving backwards by getting a MFT sensor, also how much would a speedbooster increase performance on the gh6?
Great content! BTW. Don't you think that GH6's open gate 5.8K 10-bit video with C-AF could easily be a replacement for 6K photo mode form G9? I genuinely think that these were the same thing only with different interfaces and that such functionality could be added to GH6 with a firmware update. Seriously, it only differs in playback mode where you would have to be able to scroll through a footage, pick one frame and pin it to write as a separate photo. I also cannot comprehend how can GH6 not provide us higher than 7fps framerates in photo busrt modes with electronic shutter if they are able to provide 5.8K 4:3 30p and 5.7K 16:9 60p in 16:9 crop with C-AF. If the AF sucked in that mode, let it suck but give it to us. If that wouldn't be possible in RAWs, just give us 10-bit HVECs. Many of theese modes seems to be essentially the same things but packed differently. I don't get why is Panasonic using a Criple Hammer. Unless they are preparing some cind of successor to G9. But I am not sure if they are in position to make that differentiation. They really have to boost specs to the maximum to better compete with Olympus OM-1 and not end up with a niche product for video nerds.
Maybe because it's the GH6? That aside it's insane how different footage even from the same camera can look. Just compare i.e. Armando Ferreira's and Jordan's Gh6 Footage to the one from TCS. It makes them look like two totally different cameras. (TCS Footage looks really bad imho while in other hands it looks amazing)
Well it is definitely not the GH6. Look into exposing the right way and grading the VLOG footage. The S1h can make a much more pleasing image if you ask me, but you have to use the right glass too.
@@KobusGevelspar Thanks for the input, guys. But I'm a professional cinematographer that knows how to operate a camera and grade. I'm simply trying to ascertain this particular look (which is quite similar to the new Sony "cinematic" look), which I've seen in other vids done with current Panasonic cameras. Just wondering if maybe there's a LUT or setting in Davinci I've missed.
Don't forget that in low light you get to use a wider aperture with m43 and still get the subject in focus. That translates directly into either getting a faster shutter speed at the same iso as the full frame camera or getting the same shutter speed and 2 stops lower iso. In the majority of shooting situations a m43 photographer shoots two stops lower on the iso scale. iso 1600 on m43 is the same as iso 6400 on a full frame camera in terms of real life shooting.
don't forget in daylight.. for example in ff with f4.0 iso 200, you must have ND filter to get the same look at f.2.0 in m43, becasue is too much light.
"The GH6 is a hell of a lot lighter..." (1:33) while the text at the bottom of the screen shows that the SH1 is over 200 grams (~0.5 lbs) lighter? Perhaps a bit of mislabeling? 🤔
I own the Olympus OM-D 1 Mark ii and Ive been doing great with photography, now I am including videography in my bag by starting a TH-cam channel. I want to be able to create short stories and have a dedicated video camera and I am debating with going for the GH6 or going full frame. I was partly thinking of staying M4/3 do to my glass but I don't know if much of my glass would be good for video (I heat the 12-40 f2.8 PRO is actually great for video) So what would you advise someone just getting into video but looking to make money doing events, interviews, documentaries and short stories?
What application are you using to import your 100MP High Res photos into your Computer? I've tried every Adobe CC app and had Adobe screenshare to try to figure it out to no avail. I've tried Luminar Neo and all that does is create a very blurry image then goes to static. I've tried Silkypix Pro 11 and nothing. DNG converters do NOT work. Preview as well as Photos do NOT work. I spent all of yesterday shooting High Res photos with my new GH6 and now I can't access any of them unless I look at them in camera. I've seen a bunch of you guys uploading high res images. What the hell program are you using to get these damn things out of the camera???? This is driving me nuts! Note* I have the latest firmware for all applications as well as updated Mac M1.
The S5 sometimes has very red skin tones when shooting in v-log and correcting to Rec709 using Panasonic's Nicest 709 LUT. How are the skin tones with the GH6?
I can only dream of and imagine if Panasonic joined Sony and it would have Sony's stellar auto-focus. YES, this might come in handy even for pro-filmmakers, BUT especially for "one man crew" like myself, where I have to watch out what I am filming, hold maybe a light in one hand and stuff like that... and a gimbal. Yeah... Almost made me jump ship, but... maybe later, when I am better at making videos. P.S. My first "video" camera was the T3i, where I had to MANUALLY focus all the time, with primes or the kit lens, so I know what manual focus is (used it for years), but, one only has to experience the auto-focus joy from Sony, to really understand what that means and why one would not go back to manual focus, if possible, like ever again...
I'm just thrilled about the OM-1 having good video specs and that gorgeous viewfinder with phase-detect autofocus. No, the video specs aren't as amazing as the GH6, but they are good enough for 95% of people if not more. If the Sony a7S III can get by with "just" 10-bit 4K up to 120 fps with external ProRes RAW, I think 4K 60p with no crop is fine for OM. The extra two stops of low-light performance and the extra stop of dynamic range over the E-M1 III make Micro Four Thirds more viable. Either the OM-1 or the GH6 can be a fantastic choice, depending on your needs. I'd love to see an XLR adapter from OM System similar to the XLR-1 from Panasonic. I think that would be a really smart play.
I think what OM offers in terms of video is the bare minimum for a new camera at this pricepoint in 2022. I would not throw numbers around like 95%. Because in reality you have no idea, neither do I.
The problem I foresee is the low bitrate codecs. Sure it may be 10 bit, but 10 bit 4k30p is only 77Mbps. The Sony A7iii was shooting 8 bit at 100Mbps and even that wasn't flexible enough. Now with more than 10x the data from 8~10 bit, I'm not sure where the data is going to make 100 down to 77. The Fuji XT4 for example shoots anywhere between 100 to 400Mbps in LongGop 10 bit 420, which sounds far more robust. It would be interesting if Jordan could do some tests, and see which factor is more important. Would a ultra compressed 10 bit video still outperform a slightly less compressed 8 bit? Or how would an ultra high bitrate 800Mbps 10 bit from the GH6 compare to the 77Mbps of the OM1?
@@lalilland You forgot to say the GH6 is a gigantic camera, with a vent and horrible autofocus. I believe G6 is a great camera, to a professional video guy, who mostly shoots manual. If you, like me, need a camera to do photo e video, travel, little bit of action, hiking... I do think the om-1 is a far better choice. Even if you are a professional, but outdoors. etchd has a nice video with the "behind the scenes" of a photoshoot with the om-1. I do believe the video quality is enough for most people. The autofocus limits the G6 so much. I am not an engineer, so i don't know how a phase detect system would impact down the specs of the camera. But if this camera had a reliable autofocus, it would appeal for a lot more people than only videographers.
@@danilo2567 So? I was talking about the video features, because that was the topic. The GH6 is tiny tiny tiny camera in the video world. But if we want to bash the OM we can do that as well. Lower MP, no 6k, no 120fps, no 4.2.2, laughable micro-hdmi, worse screen. I'm also 100% sure Pana's new ibis is better than the OM's.
@@professionalpotato4764 I appreciate that observation. Obviously, I do wish the OM-1 came with higher data rates and even better video specs. But, the OM-1 has the trump card of phase-detect autofocus, and I'm guessing the video specs are "good enough." Like you, I want to see more testing. I got a comment on another video from Etchd Photography, and he said he was having great success with grading OM-1 footage. I still don't really have many complaints about the video from my E-M1 II, and this is a big step up from that. If you really want the best possible output from the OM-1, you can hook up a Ninja V and get 12-bit 4:4:4 RAW (via the cursed micro-HDMI port, unfortunately). It feels like OM System benchmarked the GH5 when they should have been benchmarking the next camera. But, at least we're basically getting a lot of GH5-level video specs plus a few things the GH5 can't do, like RAW video. That's exactly what I've been asking for, and I think a lot of Olympus shooters have been too. We don't need more megapixels; we need better low-light performance and dynamic range, and they delivered. (Ideally, we would get both though.) They're listening to their customers.
May I ask how you were able to edit your GH6 RAW photo images? I have a GH6 and I'm struggling to find a reliable piece of software that will open and edit the new RW2 files. Panasonic recommend Silkypix however that is just too buggy to youse to render it useless.
@@dpreview You can say that again. I can't even get a stable version of it to open just one single RW2 file. However I will keep bashing away at my one-man-campaign to get Panasonic LUMIX to give us a reliable method to use files created by their own Flagship camera. Otherwise I have a very very expensive camera with the abilities of a mobile phone taking JPEGS. BTW please stop making excellent quality episodes. Its getting really taxing on my wallet. 😂😂
Perhaps the S!H is better in low light, but how often would the GH6 actually be inadequate for what you do? The GH6 is pretty much the same weight as my S1R. I was surprised it's heavier than my 5Ds.
In terms of bokeh, what's the fastest native lens that I can buy for the GH5/6? Currently my go to for weddings is the Sigma 18-35 because I can stop down to F1.2 (2.4 FF equivalent) it looks great, but autofocus is not usable because of the speedometer. The sigma is equivalent to the 24-70 if you factor in teleconverter mode. I'm looking for a Native lens equivalent to a 24-70 that can stop down to an F2.8 FF equivalent...so F1.4 or F1.2 or even below that. The panasonic 12-35 is equivalent in focal length to a 24-70 but F2.8 is not impressive. Thats like a Full frame user bragging about filming at F5.6....nasty.
Why testing the IBIS while walking, but not while using a long lens or during a small smooth camera movement? I really don't get why so many testers do it this way. It messes with my brain. It is so weird like testing low light in a sunny beach and noone's having a problem with that. Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know.
Ok so I want this camera for ibis and anamorphic and the same iq through all frame rateS. The price though?? S5/s1 are on sale now and the only lenses I have are canon fd’s which can be adapted easier/cheaper and get shallower dof. Help!
Probably a new Sony dslm camera if I had to guess. I know the NFL uses them for "end zone cams" but I think they might not be relying on autofocus. Nikon z9 might also be a good shout, especially if you want a hybrid workflow.
@@ledheavy26 Thanks. That was the direction I was thinking of going in (Sony DSLM). I have the GH5 and definitely have missed some good moments because the focus was sluggish. I was disappointed to hear Jordan comment that the GH6 is probably not good for sports, but I honestly needed to hear that. Perhaps that's the kick in the butt I need to move on from the Lumix environment and switch to Sony. I think I'm clinging to the hope that the GH6 will be good enough for sports videography so that I don't need to buy new lenses and all that.
Wouldn’t it still be “ok” to film sports without AF? The framing should be pretty wide and if you have a high quality external monitor, MF should be no problem. I guess it would all depend on what sport you’re shooting but a nice external monitor makes a huge diff when you have to MF.
Hi, what about slowmo in 120fps in both, but indoors when you must go with iso to about 5000-6000 and shutter speed to 240. Of course in S1H FullHD HFR 10bit, and GH6 4k 120 fps 10 bit.. S1H or GH6 will win?

I mean the gh6 is already a killer camera for documentary work haha, but any new panasonic makes me happy.
@@JKastle007 I own m43 and FF systems. Both have their place IMO
Excellent comparison Jordan, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for m4/3 ever since the GH2.
I'd love to see gh6 + vazen 28 handeld only videos. Shooting anamorphic with no gimbal in a relatively small handheld package is wild. No one could do this type of setup years ago. It's game changing.
see bernard bertrand channel, he got an anamorphic video and its quite spectacular :)
Video shooting will go to GH6 is almost all settings (except perhaps where AF is very necessary)
Photography, most will go to OM-1 (except maybe where resolution is most important. GH6 has higher native sensor resolution but also the 100MP works handheld - and seems to work very well)
One is photo focused, one is video focused. Simple.
You got the weight swapped around 1:37 in. The GH6 is 823g, not the S1H
As usual a fantastic video review. You guys are amazing and I never buy gear before you guys review it first. Thank you so much!
Great review Jordan on the GH6. Could you recommend some of the best wide lenses for the S1H?
My buddy has an S1H, I remember it being way lighter than my Z6 even with the fins on the side(fan inside?). Pretty cool.
You guys make great reviews. I hope they pay you a lot of money.
1:31 is the GH6 lighter or not? The text on screen shows the S1H being lighter.
Is the body weight graphic mixed up? Commentary says GH6 is lighter but that doesn’t match what’s on screen
7:11 it's interesting seeing the depth of field difference between the two systems despite being shot at the same f values.
Right, a full frame sensor will have a shallower depth of field because of the physics of having a larger sensor to capture light on.
Would a 24-70 2.8 lens be enough to cover weddings? This lens only is what I am trying to get to.
@@royaltykidstv youll struggle at a dark reception with 2.8. Ive only done 3 weddings for friends. I used F1.4 primes for the reception.

@@royaltykidstv yes you could do that, but youd end up with very flat looking images.

TLDR; gh6 handle run and gun champ, s1h is for set work
This is a great comparison. If I were starting video from scratch and had to choose between the GH6 and the S1H, I would probably lean toward the GH6.
Great review! I wasn't that impressed at first, but after watching more and more of these reviews, I am.
Great post, I see exactly like that and also the much higher body price of the S1H do not forget ...
Guys, great comparison but you got the weights swapped at 1:35.
I'd kinda lean towards GH6, just for the sake of keeping things compact. Yeah dynamic range is better in the big bro S1H but isn't a deal breaker for me. Also now that it has the tilt/flip out screen is perfect for what I do.
Get the S5. It's smaller than the GH6 and full frame.
@@jonniecandito181 I don't like the full frame Panasonic lens mount, with the GH series I throw all kinds of glass to it.

Funny enough it is the panasonic 10 25 1.7 that interested me if I bought a GH6.

Fascinating thanks for sharing! The real battle would be against the BGH1 that also has 13 stops of DR. I would love to see that comparison in 4k. 10MP big pixel pitch vs 24MP 5.7k downscaled.
The BGH1 is just a rehoused GH5S.
Yes but enhanced, there's 1 extra stop or DR in the BGH1 compared to gh5s
0:43 Do you mean DFD? Yet for that I hear that DJI may collaborate with Lumix for a LiDAR module. Not sure if it is possible...
He said “face detect autofocus”.
You have the weights reversed at 1:33. The GH6 is LIGHTER at 823g NOT 1052g
spotted the Dji Mic RX/TX on the video :D when is that comming out ? the hissing noise is fixed ? I'm holding on buying the Rode before I get to test the offering from dji..
1:30 I think you have the captions backward with regard to weight.
Nice review. I noticed no mention of BRAW recording externally (or internally). Curious about that.
It can’t really
be compared apples to apples to me they’re such different looks.
Thank you for the perfect expert comparison. Make another comparison: GH6 vs X-H2S and S1H vs GFX 50IIs
Another advantage of the GH6 is the vast range of quality M43 glass available. Eventually, I will probably sell my OM-1 MKIII and buy this puppy
Yes its not full frame but that doesnt mean its bad at all and if you can get a good image out of it easier than it will always win to me
Excellent video by pro real user, not in-room reviewer.

Great video! The stabilization alone is worth it for me. See ya later G9! 😄
They really have to boost specs to the maximum to better compete with Olympus OM-1 and not end up with a niche product for video nerds.
micro four-thirds came a long way. amazing.
that GH6 is tempting... I am considering moving up to full frame lumix... but after this review... Im so conflicted lol
I've been trying to get colors like you do at 10:30 on my S1H but haven't had much luck. What's the secret?
@@JeffBodeanCinema Can you show me a video of the new Sony “cinematic" look ?
Thanks!! Just wandering… Could you make a review within de Gh5m2 and the Gh6?
I need 5.8k 30p/60p(5760*3240)16:9.Hope panasonic will provide it next firmware.
True, but that can easily be corrected in post. The problem is in the provided LUT, not the camera.
Thank you for your awesome review.
I can only dream of and imagine if Panasonic joined Sony and it would have Sony's stellar auto-focus.
YES, this might come in handy even for pro-filmmakers, BUT especially for "one man crew" like myself,
where I have to watch out what I am filming, hold maybe a light in one hand and stuff like that... and a gimbal.
Yeah...
Almost made me jump ship, but... maybe later, when I am better at making videos.
P.S. My first "video" camera was the T3i, where I had to MANUALLY focus all the time, with primes or the kit lens,
so I know what manual focus is (used it for years), but, one only has to experience the auto-focus joy from Sony,
to really understand what that means and why one would not go back to manual focus, if possible, like ever again...
Superb information sir
A really solid and fair-handed review.
May I ask how you were able to edit your GH6 RAW photo images?
I have a GH6 and I'm struggling to find a reliable piece of software that will open and edit the new RW2 files.
Panasonic recommend Silkypix however that is just too buggy to youse to render it useless.
We used SilkyPix. It’s rough.

Currently my go to for weddings is the Sigma 18-35 because I can stop down to F1.2 (2.4 FF equivalent) it looks great, but autofocus is not usable because of the speedometer. Why testing the IBIS while walking, but not while using a long lens or during a small smooth camera movement? I really don't get why so many testers do it this way. It messes with my brain.
