      With DR boost, Panasonic said that the raw file is a 16bit container and this is stunning as a M43 camera (all others were 12bit except the GH5S which is 14bit)

    Not mainly for photos, but for photos too. I´m glad with the results so far (first week with the GH6). Camera is definately superior to my G9 and GX9 (but yes, you have to spend some money). 25MPx with a bit better noise handling are much appreciated and the high-res is really good. Were able to shoot wildlife (also birds and deer needs to sit still) with 500mm (Olympus 150-400 Pro, TC 1.25) handheld high res with some really good results. Never expected that this is possible.

    It would be a huge mistake if Panny failed to follow-up the video-centric GH6 with a photo-centric G9 replacement. The GH6 is obviously a great camera, but no battery grip provision and a lack of certain other features available on the G9 (plus extraneous video-centric features photographers don't need along with the extra bulk and complexity of the cooling system) means a lot of us will continue to use the G9 for now (and even consider the OM-1). BtW, the GH6 can go as low as 50 ISO (the G9 can go down to 100 extended--it can also shoot at 1/32,000). Also, for every supposed advantage of "FF" (we called 135 "small format" in the film days), MFT has even greater advantages. There simply is no significant IQ edge to larger-format sensors that can be detected in any print viewed at an appropriate distance.

    • @PaulAntonescu
      @PaulAntonescu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The depth of field is so different on a FF

    • @ddsdss256
      @ddsdss256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@PaulAntonescu Sensor size is but one element affecting DoF and I can easily get whatever DoF I want with MFT (and even smaller sensors) by adjusting FL, f-stop (I have f/0.95 but rarely use it), or distance to subject. It's also easy to achieve that look in post in those rare cases when I want it, plus super-shallow DoF is often way overdone--to farcical levels in some cases. More importantly, except for relatively few situations, there is a distinct advantage in having deeper DoF, not shallower. Ansel, et al, formed Group f/64 because they valued having everything in focus, and IMO, for most photography, that's still the better way to go.

    Hi Richard. Thank you for your videos! For hobbyist Nature photography I don't see any improvement from my G9 to the GH6 photos for online publishing and small prints. In fact I actually get better photos in that respect with my G9 than anything I've seen from GH6 reviews. I am having fun experimenting with video, but not there yet to buy a new camera for thousands of dollars for a little bit extra quality. Enjoying the upgrade to G9's auto focus with peaking helping me move away from having to use manual for everything I shoot.

    I ended up going with an OM1 , as my main interest for this purchase was possible sporting use and compact size. However, there would definitely be times - landscapes etc - where I'd appreciate the extra resolution and lower base iso of the GH6 so it's not impossible that I end up running both at some point. Either body is cheaper than changing systems with new lenses etc, so I'm happy to see how they go before deciding whether to shift to a Z series camera.

    Love how detailed your videos are! If you still have the GH6, maybe you can help clear up some of the confusion around the dynamic range of the GH6 at low ISO values, like ISO 100 or 200. How is the GH6 C-AF in low light for example at a wedding when people are dancing.
    When I was shooting weddings with my Olympus OMD E-M5 I was shooting S-AF and stopping not to f7.1 with my Olympus 12-40mm f2.8. When I got my Olympus OMD E-M1ii the C-AF is really good in low light and I stop down to f4 and sometimes even open up to f2.8 and the camera can stay in focus with phase detection a lot better then just uses contrast detection in low light.

    After using my GH6 for about 2 weeks, I find the video dynamic range a big step up from previous Panasonic MFT cameras with bright shadows and more retained detail in highlights. I like the extra detail and improved color, especially skin tones which no longer have the reddish tint. Even the auto focus is quite improved and I no longer have seen the background pulsing. Its not perfect but it seems useable. However, I am not sure what Panasonic did, but the photo dynamic range is quite poor and seems mostly unusable to me for photography.
    Panasonic have said the Dynamic Range Boost doesn't work the same for video as it does for photography and when taking photos, it is automatic and can't be turned on or off. They also don't tell you which ISOs it is on and which it is off unlike in video mode which is 800 for all profiles except V-Log and 2000 for V-Log when set to on.
    In video when its on, using V-log ISO 2000 is the minimum and the noise is comparable to a much lower ISO when properly exposed and cleans up well in editing. In Photography at lower ISOs the noise seems a bit worse.
    Testing it side by side with my GH5, the low ISO dynamic range is bad with crushed shadows easily, especially in contrasty scenes. I found at ISO 800 (the native ISO for video) the dynamic range is the lowest good ISO for useable dynamic range, but you get noisy shadows and even then, it falls behind the GH5, GH5 MK2 and G9 as they have better dynamic range, especially the GH5 MK2. I initially liked the inclusion of hi resolution mode, but with the poor dynamic range, its not worth it. I am glad I kept my GH5 when I upgraded so I can use that for photography and use the GH6 when I am taking videos.

    If you're more photo-centric, the OM-1 makes a lot more sense due to the phase-detect autofocus and AI deep learning. The stacked sensor also improves performance at higher ISOs.
    Plus, it still takes excellent video, albeit not at GH6 levels. Sure, the GH6 has a few more megapixels, but I don't know if that will make much of a difference. They probably did that more so the camera could take 5.7K video.

    Richard, I wanted to ask an important question to you. I was asking my online friend Steven Litton who has a GH6/Lumix channel. We were talking about extracting still photos from 4K video. I shoot often wildlife from my raft on the river. It's very unstable. The waves/wind and the boat is rocking and it's awkward to hold the camera steady while siting. When I shoot video there are always many frames that are in focus intermittently that are good. I rely heavily on grabbing stills from video. I told Steve I would ask you. He is also a fan of your channel. So the question is this. Do you have an opinion on what is my best video mode to use when thinking to extract many still frames. Now I'm using 4K 60P. I am wondering, would I be better shooting 5.8 K 60P or maybe even 4K 120????? Also would it be a better grab if I shot in 800mbps in 4K as opposed to 600. Does it matter what I use. Can I improve my video still frame grabs by using different settings. Please let me know.

    • @sutv6754
      @sutv6754 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi again Richard. I decided to watch this video again. I watched it when it came out. I see in this video you touch on the still image grab. So 120P was an example you used. I have used the internal GH6 still frame grab feature. Do you think it is better to use this feature instead of grabbing a still in adobe premiere? I think it's probably better to grab in camera. If you have any more thoughts on the matter, please let me know. Do you think 120 is better than 60P. I think that auto focus works better at higher frame rates and shutter speeds.

      Richard, Sorry for so many questions but I wanted to ask one more thing. I shoot in Vlog video. If I use the internal still grab on GH6 will it be in vlog or does it give it a color profile? Is there a choice?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      re frame rate, 30/60/120. i think it really depends on how fast things happen. Is there a chance shooting a 60 or 120 would give you the better "moment" than shooting at 30? if not, i would shoot in 30p to save some memory card space. That is assuming you don't need the high speed video for slow motion playback anyway. In general DFD autofocus works faster when shooting in high frame rate, but if you don't care too much about the focus transition smoothness and just want to grab a short video clip/screengrab, you can increase the AF sensitivity and speed to get faster autofocus performance (but downside is AF transition won't be quite as smooth and AF is a bit more unstable)
      Re 5.8k vs 4k, to me, the biggest difference is the aspect ratio, 5.8k is 3:2 an 4k is 16:9. What is the output aspect ratio you want for your photo? If you are not sure, i would choose 5.8k as you have more option to crop during editing.
      For the codec, i would shoot in All-I for sure, but 800mbps vs 600mbps i think if you can do 800mbps then go for that to get you best quality
      I also suggest you pay attention to the shutter speed/aperture as those settings would probably impact how the image look greatly
      If you shoot in VLOG, i would import the video to your video editing software and then do the colour grading from your 10bit video and screen grab there as that would give you a lot more flexibility in terms of colour grading /editing
      hope that helps

    hi Richard, great video as usual! What about noise at low iso? I have both m4/3 and FF Lumix cameras and there's quite a difference between my S5 and G9 at low iso as well. The files produced by the S5 are cleaner, without any doubt, while the G9 is more grainy (it's particularly visible on blue skies). I wonder if the new GH6 sensor, with base iso at 100 is cleaner than the old G9 sensor, being closer to the S5. I don't care so much about high iso, since 99% of the pictures I take are at lower iso ;)

      The new sensor of the GH6 comes close to the performance of an aps-c sensor and certainly not to that of the great S5 camera, I do not know its needs but I believe that the video performance of the S5 is more than excellent.

      hi SUTV, I'm pretty sure the GH6 can't do 4k 120 at 10bit 422. It is 420 10bit at 4k 120fps (still really good).

      @sutv6754 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRealRichardWong Well you are a nice person to think that it's a simple mistake because that is a very gigantic spec. It surely doe not shoot 10 bit 422 4k in 120 FPS. I get mad because many of the major channels who really know their stuff say it. If you watch PRO Av TV they say it loud and clear and put it in bold type on the screen. I realize 420 10 bit if fine but why so many BS about it. I'm a rookie and know very well the camera cannot do that. Anyhow. Thank You Richard.

      Hi SUTV, I do genuinely think some channel may have just made a mistake. For each of my video, I always double or triple check my scripts and test results before I film .. then after edited everything together I usually re watch a few times to pick up any errors. And I can honestly tell you there are still quite a lot of errors in my videos. And I absolutely hate it as once you have published something, TH-cam doesn't allow you to edit your errors unless you delete the video completely which is something we really avoid to do. But yeah check a few sources esp if you notice something that is not consistent between different review channels, I really made mistakes too so I won't ask you to just trust whatever I said :)
