Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you.
To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework.
    ________________________________________________
Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when.
You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management.
    Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video;
03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations?
04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process
    04:43 Project Life Cycle
    06:52 Process Groups
09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? [Hint: I am biased!]
    11:53 Process Groups - Initiation
13:06 Process Groups - Initiation - Project Charter
16:50 Process Groups - Initiation - Stakeholder Identification
    18:17 Process Groups - Planning
20:30 Process Groups - Planning - Collecting Requirements
22:45 Process Groups - Planning - Defining the Scope
24:41 Process Groups - Planning - Scope Baseline
25:12 Process Groups - Planning - Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
32:22 Process Groups - Planning - WBS Dictionary & Scope Creep
    34:39 Process Groups - Planning - Time Management / Developing a Schedule
36:00 Process Groups - Planning - Gantt Chart
37:38 Process Groups - Planning - Fast Tracking a Project & Project Crashing
38:52 Process Groups - Planning - Cost Management
39:42 Process Groups - Planning - Budget development (for PMP or CAPM takers)
    41:02 Process Groups - Executing
42:04 Process Groups - Executing - Gold Plating
43:16 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling
45:00 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling - Earned Value
47:57 Process Groups - Closing Process Group
    _______________________________________________________________
What is even a project? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project…
I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French.
    Proje…
Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution.
    Yeah that’s operations. No
Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done.
Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive.
You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together.
Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together.
    So, it’s project, program, portfolio.
Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies.
The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process.
Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in TH-cam confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process.
Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you.
Let’s start with Project Life Cycle.
Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs.
It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project.
    So, your life cycle is;
    1) Conceiving
    2) Birth
    3) Childhood
    4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging?
    5) Adulthood
    6) And death
    Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this;
    High-level design
    Detailed Design
    Coding
    Testing
    Installation
    And Turnover
    This is project life cycle.
The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows.
    This video covers;
    project management
    project management institute
    pmp project management professional certification
    project life cycle
    project management PMI
    managing a project
    project management fundamentals
    fundamentals of project management
    project management for beginners
    project management course

Great video. As a PMP certified Project Manager, having the certification opens doors and secures interviews. I work within the Project Management Office of a Fortune-500 company in the US, and they want certified applicants because it conveys that the job candidate understands the fundamentals of Project Management.

I just wanted to say- thank you very much for posting this video! I have been a career manufacturing engineer, and I've made decent money up to this point. I had no idea that I had been already 90% of the time doing project managing. I went in for an interview last week and pretty much shared what you had shared in this video. I got the job! I'm super excited! The pay is total insanity, I know I will have to work very hard, but to be finally rewarded for my hard work is so amazing! FYI I beat out other PMP certified candidates for a role and I don't even have a PMP cert.

Your templates are insanely simple! And I love them because they are colorful and still make sense! I got my project management certificate in 201. I didn't pay for this education, it was through a special program for families with low incomes otherwise I wouldn't have even done it. This certificate was just an addition to my Associate of the Arts Fashion Design degree (2012) and later on my BFA in Fashion Design and Marketing (2020). I see projects all the time in my head and I wonder if I need to revisit Project Management all the time. So I typed in Project Management simplified to see how I can add it (because I've been designing dance garments lately) and you just helped clear the clouds a lot. I understood it when I was taking it but based on the way you said it, I can totally see how I can incorporate this into Fashion Design and my services for what I'm about to do.

Sir, Thank you so much for explaining Project Management. I accepted a new position at work and they wanted me to know Project Management. This is helping me understand the fundamentals of how it works and not to overthink. It is kind of like investigations, have to figure out why it happened, how it happened, who did the crime, the motive, and finally the conviction. my education is in criminology and from what I understand so far Project Management (in my Abby Normal brain) has the same methodology. Thanks again, Sir.

You have offered me a TON of information and confidence for my upcoming interviews. I've even forward every one I've watched to my newly college graduate daughter for her upcoming govt interview. I'm surprised, I'd just stumbled upon one video and continued to look for any one I could find today. Now I must review all of these notes and prepare the info suggested. This is really helpful. I have been a project manager for 10 years and prior to that I was a Supervising Producer for the Discovery Channel. I agree with your tips. I prepared myself for 6 months to take the PMP and later got a job where I had to put it on hold. Over the last 6 years, I questioned whether I should pursue PMP, but decided against it. I think the value in the PMP is a tremendous set of tools to pull out of your bag when there are questions. Most companies I have worked for do not follow strict PMP guidelines. Thank you for the overview.

Deniz - I am currently going through a formal PMP / Scrum Master program. Feeling pretty overwhelmed by it all (how much memorization will be required to pass this PMI exam). You're right, though. Seeing it as building blocks and having you break down the fundamentals so clearly has helped many pieces of the puzzle fit together. Another thing you're on spot with - yes, I've managed processes before and successfully. Thank you more than you know for this video. I can't wait to look for your others.

Summary: 00:00:00 This video introduces the fundamentals of Project Management, focusing on the Project Life Cycle. It covers the different stages of a project, and how to customize the cycle to fit the specific needs of a project. The video also covers the importance of having a project management process, and explains the difference between the two.
00:05:00 Project management is a complex process that requires understanding of the fundamentals of the PMI Framework. The five process groups that are used in real life are simplified to a single phase in order to make running the project easier. The biggest reason most people fail the PMP exam is because they are not familiar with the process groups and the project life cycle.
00:10:00 Project management can be simplified with the help of a framework, terminology, and project charter. Initiation is the process of developing a project charter and identifying stakeholders. This video provides an example of how this process can be applied to a boat project.
00:15:00 Project management is simplified by first understanding the fundamentals of the Project Management Institute's (PMI) framework. This includes understanding the initiation process, stakeholder identification, and planning stages. The bottom line is that the more detailed your project planning is, the more approvals you'll need and the more knowledge you'll need for the test.
00:20:00 This 1-minute video provides an overview of the Project Management Institute's (PMI) framework, including the requirement-gathering process and the definition of project scope. The video also introduces the concepts of scope baseline and work breakdown structure.
00:25:00 The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a top-down effort used to decompose a project into manageable pieces. It is important to follow PMI's framework or another equivalent project methodology, as work packages in a WBS must be "things" - completed deliverables - not actions. In practice, most people use a hybrid model, with their WBS containing both deliverables and tasks.
00:30:00 The video discusses the basics of project management frameworks, including the Project Management Institute's (PMI) framework. The final work package as part of manufacturing is Cosmetics; Cosmetics include sanding and painting. Now, let's move on to Electronics; First work package is; decide on components and procure them. The second work package is; assembly. Next, move on to next segment, rigging. Rigging is this whole part, the mast, the boom, sails; mainsail and jib or genoa, then shrouds, mainsheet, the battens, the whole thing. For this segment, my work packages are; 1) Decide and procure items on the material list. 2) Electronics installed. 3) Rigging. 4) Testing. 5) Sea trials. 6) All completed. The final task is to discuss the importance of WBS. Everything happens after WBS in our planning process group is directly related to WBS. For example, project costs, schedule, risks, and everything is calculated at work package level using the WBS. Before moving on to other processes, I want to remind you of Scope Baseline. Scope Baseline is project scope statement, WBS, and WBS Dictionary.
00:35:00 Project Management Simplified provides a brief overview of the Fundamentals of the PMI's framework, including activity level, estimating, sequencing, and budgeting. The video also covers fast tracking and crashing a project.
00:40:00 Project management is a process of managing a project from initiation to completion. In the initiation phase, the project manager creates a project management plan and estimates the project costs. In the planning phase, the project manager includes contingency estimates and manages risks. In the execution phase, the project manager completes the work defined in the plan and meets the project objectives. The monitoring and controlling process group monitors the project performance against the plan and makes any necessary changes. Finally, the earned value calculation process group monitors the project's progress and ensures that the project is meeting its cost, schedule, and quality goals.
00:45:00 Project management is simplified with the concepts of earned value and the Closing Process Group. The video covers how earned value is used to calculate the progress of a project, as well as how to close a project.
00:50:00 This video teaches the fundamentals of the Project Management Institute's (PMI) framework. It explains how this framework can be used to succeed in getting hired by multinational firms.
