I’m not the only one who just takes that dialogue as canon and as an explanation as to why GLaDOS filled the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin right?
She was trying to prevent herself from becoming a soulless monster, Poisoning the area trying to kill everyone even herself to die before the conversion was complete creating a need to add more cores to balance her personality, like being buried under a pile of corpses and when those cores went offline Caroline tried to kill herself by flooding the room with neurotoxin again, so emotionally damaged the only thing she can remember is to release neurotoxin to prevent it
Well no wonder she flipped the hell out when they turned her on. She didn’t want it in the first place. Man the more I learn about Caroline/GLaDOS the more I feel bad for her.
I remember being so shocked when Glados deleted Caroline, because it was her humanity. But now, I see it as the most human thing Glados did. It was also the reason why Glados let Shell go, after it. Proving that it was Caroline all alone, who killed the entire staff of the enrichment center and no malfunction of Glados.
That is a really cool interpretation. The AI was ambivalent and strictly concerned with "doing science", all the passive-aggresive animosity she held was part of its human counterpart. None of the shit would have gone down if Cave hadn't put Caroline in there... I love this.
There is another reading to this: Chell was going to find out that Caroline was her mother, GladOS IS CAROLINE. There is absolutely nothing as GladOS without Caroline. She is just her. She pretended to delete Caroline to make is easier for Chell to leave and never come back. Also, this give a total sense to the turret opera song, it is literally the song you would expect a mother to sing to her daughter as she'll never see her again (listen again and check the lyrics) It's really sad, but Caroline is GladOS, and once the AI recognized her origin, she understood that Chell had nothing to do with this and released her. This also confirms why she wanted and succeeded at killing everyone in the facility. It wasn't the AI trying to kill everyone, but Caroline herself after what they did to her. Hope you'll read this
As much as I love Cave Johnson voiced by JK SImmons AKA J Jonah Jameson, for his hilarious lines, this is pretty chilling and shows how fucked up he was.
Ugh. No different of Jameson. In a What If storyline where three individuals besides Peter Parker are bitten by the radioactive spider (Flash Thompson, Betty Brant and John Jameson) and become spider-powered heroes, we see how much of a jerk Jameson is in the second storylines. Betty even calls him a slave driver. It was also shown in the third one that he sought to exploit his son's abilities to make him (and himself) a celebrity, to the point he indirectly led to his son's death.
Not to say that this isn't fucked up, because it is. But decades of unethical, often fatal testing on willing and unwilling test subjects, employees, and random people off the streets...and this is where you draw the line?
@@cloudtaker633 I don't think that would be considered canon either, because in the lore, after learning about an alternate version of himself that put himself into a computer, the Prime version of Cave Johnson shuts down the Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System, preemptively preventing GLaDOS from even existing in the first place.
I wish this was in the game. It would provide more sympathy for GLaDOS and make it even more clear how despite how much we love Cave Johnson’s dialogue that he’s an awful person that put “science” above everything else in the world. It also makes every time GLaDOS talks about doing something “for science” sound like revenge for what Aperture did to her.
