Any slums in the world is not a proper place for touring. The government of kenya and touring agencies shouldn't allow it. Poor people should be respected by not taking pictures and leave them to their privacy..

Hi, I'm doing research on Slum tourism and I would like to know what motivates tourists to visit slum areas ?
I would appreciate if I get some replies to my question. Thanks.

Well we opted to take the kiddies to Disneyland but that's so been done. And nothing says family vacation like shiting on a garbage heep in the middle of a slum, wearing a dead rat hat and eating a rat meat burger with the local yocals.

They should take the tourist cash. Rich people get off on viewing mass poverty, someone should make something from that just to complete the circle.

If the people there aren't happy then they should be speaking with the people who organize it... and while I feel the exploitation of people is a terrible thing, what is the difference between people visiting a rich area and taking pictures of people there? Should people stop taking pictures and going to Thailand for example because the markets and side streets are poorer then those in the western countries.
I can't blame the guy complaining that he's not getting anything out of it, you can only think for yourself and it is human to do so. But if these people go there to open their horizons, donate their time and money to organisations who can help....How is that bad? Or should we just ignore these places because we don't want to offend. Let's not use the pictures of these peoples living standards when producing marketing material for organisations such as World Vision.... There are good and bad people out there, if you shun them all, nothing bad will happen but nothing good will happen either. And for them, they will stay in their current lifestyle forever.

+Ian Smith I can tell you know nothing about tourism. The tourism management of a place is not within the power of the local community, tourism is managed by DMOs, or local/national bodies. What you say makes no sense, what's the difference between taking pictures of rich destinations VS poor destinations ? Exploiting people's misery is morally wrong, whether it is about tourism or not. Tourism is supposed to bring benefits to destinations, and when a place has glorious attributes to exhibit e.g. monuments, events, cultural places. Not only it brings pride to people, but it also benefits the economy of the destination. Don't you see what's wrong with what's happening in Kenya ? Tourism can only exist for long term if it is sustainable, and have good impacts, and when it does not like here, it is the government responsibility to take care of it. It's not about taking pics in poor neighbourhood of Thailand , because this type of tourism shown in the video doesn't go into the local economy, it's just helps white people to feel better about their lives. Would it be acceptable for your white country, to have people around feeling pity for you and treating like you don't worth the empathy and respect a human-being deserve ? So if this is OK, what's wrong with sex tourism ? Raping kids is fine, since it happens in other countries too.I thought Western countries were known to be modern and the land of humans rights ? No that would never happen, because white people feel superior and so proud of their culture. Don't you know the difference between tourism suppliers and local business ? Clearly you don't, maybe you should educate yourself about what tourism is before you play the "I-know-everything-white-guy".

So the point to bring home is: The slums should organize their own tours so the benefits go directly to the community.

First of all the population of Kibra is nowhere close to a million people. This very video falls into the category of those 'hyping' up poverty, with that very false claim.
The last national census, in 2019, placed Kibra's population at 170,000. Talk about MSM misrepresentation.
