My wife, our 5 year old twins and I traveled to Nairobi in 2017. Everyone told us ‘it was a dangerous place’. But we rented a car; drove around the city by ourselves (even did the safari in the same car), went to different markets, drove to Naivasha (stayed one night in one of the Hippo safari camps)- and we met only the nicest and kind people. Kenya is a fantastic country and I would recommend to anyone having second thoughts.
When people think of unsafe it's different as a Kenyan living in America, when Americans say unsafe they mean gunshots when Kenyans say unsafe they mean pick pocketing.
Let me draw your attention to 12:30 where the woman sold you some beans and then added a handful for you. This handful is also found in West Africa and in Gambia we call it " buu nyaa " which means honour in Mandinka. It is given to almost every customer and some customers would even pleasantly ask for it if they're not given it because people are deeply accustomed to it. This is one of the facts that makes me believe that Africans are the most generous people by nature.
From the look of things you are in downtown Nairobi, near Ngara..Not the safest of places in Nairobi,.but i also dont think its that bad..I've come to notice there are 2 types of tourists, there are the ones who come to Kenya, stay in posh hotels,go feed giraffes at the Giraffe Manor.lol,go to Diani for skydiving,go to Maasai mara for a hot air balloon sunset safari..then there are the ones who you'll see in downtown Nairobi, with shorts and a camera, bargaining for best prices, taking matatus and getting the real experience of the Kenyan people,i low-key think these ones have most fun..Anyway To each their own. Also why do Kenyans turn into comedians when they see a camera?LOL.My country people!
Lol Kenyans turn into comedians when they see camera, because growing up a photoshoot was a great affair. The whole family had to dress up and sit in a great order with a fake smile :) . The camera man had to get it right because there was no 2nd chances & it would take at-least a month before seeing the pics. So there you have it :)

I was in Kenya a few years ago, Mombasa and Nairobi, with my family. The Kenyan people we met were amazing, so friendly and kind. The wildlife is a different story. We had monkeys at our hotel who stole everything and we had an incident with a puffer fish. The people we met were next level. We made friends with a guy called John Barnes (famous Liverpool footballer) who was incredible. He was like John Barnes or more like Ronaldinho playing beach football. John Barnes took us out on his wooden catamaran along the coral reef. It was 30 degrees and felt like an oven to me but Johnny Barnes said he was cold. We met John on the beach at our 5 star hotel and we thought he must be doing OK financially but after 2 weeks of getting to know John Barnes, he took us to meet his family. They lived in a mud hut with 7 people roughly the same size as a small bedroom in a western house. It was quite shocking and depressing. We tried to give him money for taking us to see his family but he refused to take this money. Instead we made sure to tip him generously for his time on the catamaran and playing football with us. It's not fair that such nice people live in abject poverty beside super luxury hotels (the hotel we were at had a swimming pool more than a kilometre long with pool-side bars and everything you could imagine yet was cheaper than an average hotel in the UK). We went on safari and to get there we travelled through small villages made out of metal huts, baking in the hot sun. We dared not wear any jewellery including watches, we didn't even bring a camera as we were told it was too dangerous. We met the Masai in the Masai Mara, another eye-opening experience. While so many had nothing we stayed in the Hilton Hotel on stilts in the middle of the safari park. The guides and people were again wonderful, so much nicer than westerners like everything is a joy to them. They made us laugh a lot and we were able to return the favour when my mother nudged the safari guide and said, being fully serious, "there's something wrong with that elephant, he has 5 legs". The tour guide laughed at that for about half an hour. Love to Kenya from the UK
Enjoy Kenya Nick but please change that flag of Kenya on your pic. It's very wrongly arranged in terms of colour sequence, we take it very serious. When in Mombasa don't forget to go to Diani. Thanks
I agree that you should not insist on using the wrong flag after it was brought to your attention in your first Kenya video. It just makes no sense. We have flags for a reason!

It would be better though if they would also take the positive sides of it,sio places mbaya mbaya tu sababu huwa wanataka kuonyesha vile Africa tuko nyuma sometimes.... I'm glad the Kenyan TH-camrs hide the places because they also need to know that we have better and good places here.... Because well, the perception that the Western world has about Africa is not good at all....
@@sheila3027 you are right sheila. I just made a comment on that. The man comes to a city right under the equator and his video is showing a cold cloudy day with some heavily congested streets and immediately discusses pickpockets? do they do the same to their own cities?

@@Liam-fs5fe couldn't agree less though it depends with the kind of lifestyle one may opt to live, city, Career and etc. Can't compare to life out here.
I dont think this is the most fair of reviews for Nairobi. You slept in the cheapest street (River Road), and Ngara which has a 'reputation' of thuggery (but not facts) and claim the entire city is full of pickpockets and you need bodygards? Everyday I meet tourists walking alone. Great shots though..
Man don't be so mad, he did not make any such claims. Actually, it is the Kenyan vegetable vendor who looks surprised that he is walking alone without bodyguards. A joke I guess.
This kind of stuff (and the Venezuela series I watched yesterday) is better than anything on the front page of the New York Times, or the London papers. No article in a major world newspaper can possibly convey what these short videos reveal. The media has changed forever, I'm afraid.
Those people on the market were so wholesome, also how glad they were to be on the video. That's so different from any western country where people just get annoyed

John Muchau In this case 'dudhee' is a fruit. Indians call it 'dudhee' as well. This guy was out in Ngara Market (Fig Tree area) where there's obviously a huge Indian population. So it's quite understandable when both nations are able to share the same name for the fruit.
India and Africa share a bond. Lot of words have crossed over to one another’s languages. In Indian languages lion is called Simha or Sinha which is Sanskrit word. Most Indian languages use this word. Singh - a common Indian surname also means lion. African languages call Simba which I find very fascinating. Cheetah is called cheeta or chitta in many Indian languages. Mast - a state of high aggression on elephants is a Urdu/Persian word used in India. The one that i most baffling to me is mount Meru in Tanzania. According to ancient Sanskrit texts dating tens of thousands of years it is said that mount Meru in the Himalayas is super tall and thus insurmountable. Is it a coincidence that one of the tallest peaks in Africa is also called mount Meru? Danger is called Hatari in Africa and Khatara in Hindi...it’s possible cultural exchanges with Indian traders might have facilitated such words.
I have been sick since the last 3 days and I was feeling terrible desperately wanting to refresh myself, suddenly your video pops and it feels so good watching this. So healing. May God bless you and yours. I'll surely do my best in supporting your channel
Wow. The city was so congested, both with people and vehicles, although, not as many animals strolling down the road or beasts of burden. Nick, as you said, the people are awesome, hospitable and friendly. Not at all what you would expect from the crime and danger you were warned of. Thank you for sharing with us Nick. Charlie.
Charlie Wolf It’s because Nairobi has grown rapidly fast. People have been coming in quicker than the infrastructure can keep up. When the boom starts to slow down it may begin to improve, but it will take a lot of time.
You picked a ghetto place to stay.. Can tell from the bedroom window looking down.... I think if you gonna go with low budget, then it's good to be honest with the viewers.. " I didn't bring enough money so I got a cheap place in a rough area kinda place".. That's one thing many youtubers will never admit. They are always low on cash and try to really budget, which is ok, but to compensate for that they usually talk down on the area/ country.. "Very dirty, not safe, security with me everywhere.. Blah blah blah
HI-5.. He is being dramatic.. There are hell plenty of beautiful, middle range to high end places he could have picked and the review would have been different.. Ngara market though is good, that is where majority of people shop..
The people watching this should also know, by being afraid and talking so much about insecurity in Kenya is what triggers the thugs. In Kenya, just walk and look relaxed and everyone will mind their business. When you look anxious, afraid or lost is when you attract thugs, and that's not only in KENYA, but everywhere. KARIBU KENYA. ONE LOVE
As a Nairobi, Kenyan native, I like your fresh outlook ;) . You have to probably come back for a longer stay for lots more experience. From the normal "Tourist insulated" trips of the many national parks of the Masai Mara game reserve, Nairobi national park, Amboseli, Hells gate etc. Looking forward to your planned visit of the tea/coffee farm video.
@@MessiXRonaldo_no.1 the truth is that he visited the areas even some Kenyans consider unsafe especially the location of that Hotel, I admire his courage. Others could have gone to the less congested side of the city.
The code for Kenya is not 255, but 254. Population of Nairobi isn't 6.5 million, it's 3.134 million. Private security guards in Kenya do not carry firearms. The armed guard you mentioned had a truncheon only (or none). Perhaps you should tour the western part of Nairobi too, it is so different from Ngara area. A world apart. Thanks for the vid.
That is basically how the local over there would like to keep the conversation going when you are from outside so basically Nairobi is much better then Chicago people in Kenya Mossley a very humble people and I think you have seen that just by interacting the locals.
Louis don't make me laugh😅. Wasuku was very correct; Ûraria naû?-who are you talking to? Ûrarîa naû?(not a correct Kikuyu verb). It should be; Mûrarîanîra naû?- you are sharing the food with who?
Your videos are amazing. Thanks for sharing and giving people like me the opportunity to see the real hotels, streets and people and the way life really is in these countries.
Just FYI. We’re a paranoid people. I wouldn’t take the warnings too seriously. Downtown Nairobi isn’t the war zone Kenyans make it out to be. It was in the 70s to the 90s, but hasn’t managed to shed that tag even though it doesn’t track reality any more. You’d be well advised to take an Uber past 10 PM or so, but if you keep your wits about you - like you would in most big cities - it’s fine to walk around.
There’s some amazing places to stay in Nai, how did you pick that spot to stay?????? I grew up in Kenya and lived in Nairobi for 10+ years, never had a problem. People are awesome 😎
People tend to want to stay in or close to the city centre when they're travelling to a new city as this puts them very close to anything you'll need for your stay. It's a common selling point on airbnb, "walking distance from the city centre ..." It's just not a good strategy for Nairobi if you don't know it well.
Dude I’m from America and I didn’t realize how much pain and devestation we brought to soooooo many countries, Afghan, Iran, iraq so many more and here. Truly insane

Thanks
I wanted to tell him that too,,,
@Sam Bassett what does age got to do with this?
None sense, not all Kenyans take it seriously. Awesome video.
I agree that you should not insist on using the wrong flag after it was brought to your attention in your first Kenya video. It just makes no sense. We have flags for a reason!
You're bro
Watched a lot of travel vlogs...Nick is by far the best travel vlogger I have come across. Love the Ethiopia videos. Lived there for 10 years when I was young. Great to see if from an authentic traveller like Nick. Keep it up.
It's so cool to see an outsider take videos of the places Kenyan TH-camrs try to hide. So Raw. And the Kikuyu Uber driver in traffic!epic!
Hahahahaha
Si ungesema the Uber driver tu
At least this video is more positive than the previous one..
i like it.
Still using the wrong flag.

I wouldn't expect a non native Kenyan to care anyway.
Edit: I just looked at your subs, are you 9?
Edit: You're definitely 9 years old.
Nick, your footage is raw as u take us to places many has never seen (thank you!) You interact with the locals and you don't let negative criticism dissuade you from doing this. Keep up the good work and keep enlightening us about Africa. Safe travels and Peace Be Onto You!!!
The kenyan people are so respectful 🇸🇴❣
@DEREK GILENO 😂😂
I am a Nairobi resident and what has made me smile is that these ladies and gentlemen dealing with groceries can speak fluent, articulate and sharp English....kudos to them and God bless our land of Kenya.

You met such lovely people who were concerned about your safety. I've really been enjoying your travels since I discovered you a few weeks ago.
Thank you Caroline :)
You're right
River road😱 as a Kenyan I never go there
Man don't be so mad, he did not make any such claims. Actually, it is the Kenyan vegetable vendor who looks surprised that he is walking alone without bodyguards. A joke I guess.
Am a Kenyan and I agree

One thing I respect Kenyans for is hardwork and business minded. When they see an opportunity they seize it.The avocado guy so business in newzealand🙂

Love these videos, so genuine.

Johnny Daniels not just Kenyans ! 😂
This kind of stuff (and the Venezuela series I watched yesterday) is better than anything on the front page of the New York Times, or the London papers. No article in a major world newspaper can possibly convey what these short videos reveal. The media has changed forever, I'm afraid.
Urban VIII. So true👏
It's quite annoying how the media depicts all of Africa as barren or horrible except for South Africa.
The guy that offered him an avocado business venture was probably Kikuyu for sure!!😂😂😂
Ndiioo,,we don't mess around
Kikuyu and business. Just like somalis.
Probably~For sure . . . . 😀
Haha - very likely!
Thank God you did it. Some people need to see that even our country Kenya has cars. Good job bro flowing from a distance
Those people on the market were so wholesome, also how glad they were to be on the video. That's so different from any western country where people just get annoyed

10:07 “it’s called dudhee”. Yes it’s called dudhee in India also. And it’s pronounced exactly as he did. World feels so small 😀
I thought it was a nickname for that fruit because in Kenya a motorcycle is apparently called dudhee
That area he visited has many Indians living there...there's a possibility we as the locals pick up some terms and phrases for ease of communication.
It's Nduthi... From the Kikuyu dialect -largest ethnic group in Kenya
Kenya gets a bad rap!,my parents are from kenya, I live in the US born here ,but i absolutely love kenya!

Thanks Charlie, lovely people and yes, the population has almost doubled since 2009.
Just to note. You have only showed the downtown side of Nairobi. Would be nice if you portrayed both sides

@Ian Sweet That’s a good question though. It’s good to live, study and build your nation economically.
@Ian Sweet naah..man I live in Kenya. Never been on a plane.
Deep truth
Yes, yes and yes.
True
Very true
The people watching this should also know, by being afraid and talking so much about insecurity in Kenya is what triggers the thugs. In Kenya, just walk and look relaxed and everyone will mind their business. When you look anxious, afraid or lost is when you attract thugs, and that's not only in KENYA, but everywhere. KARIBU KENYA. ONE LOVE
U came during bad weather, we kinda look like Gotham now
As a Nairobi, Kenyan native, I like your fresh outlook ;) . You have to probably come back for a longer stay for lots more experience. From the normal "Tourist insulated" trips of the many national parks of the Masai Mara game reserve, Nairobi national park, Amboseli, Hells gate etc. Looking forward to your planned visit of the tea/coffee farm video.

Ok thank you for the advice ❤️
True cuz!
Love Kenya! I’m British, live in the USA, but would love to go back to Nairobi, Kakamega, and Samatia ❤️❤️❤️
Good memory dude...but it's called sabatia not samatia

There’s some amazing places to stay in Nai, how did you pick that spot to stay?????? I grew up in Kenya and lived in Nairobi for 10+ years, never had a problem. People are awesome 😎
People tend to want to stay in or close to the city centre when they're travelling to a new city as this puts them very close to anything you'll need for your stay. It's a common selling point on airbnb, "walking distance from the city centre ..." It's just not a good strategy for Nairobi if you don't know it well.
v1kku you’re right
I used to live in Kenya. The people are lovely and kind. Security is probably tight since the American Embassy bombing. That was a very sad time.
