All went well and less than 24 hours later the site was live. However, it only loads if I type the full URL with or www. in the search bar but it will not load if I just type the bare domainname.com, i.e. without the or www. I followed these steps. Custom domain ownership is verified and I added the custom domain to my google sites. The problem I am having is when I type my domain address in the browser, it redirects to the google sites url and the url shows in the address bar. I want my custom domain to show in the address bar. When I add my custom domain to my google site it says verify ownership and wants to give me another string to add in a text record. Emmanuel Civil Hey! Yes, there is a way but it is quite uncomfortable. You can find a free domain on the Freenom dot com. It provides several free domains mostly from Africa region. What’s bad about these is that your site will not be shown in most search results or will end up being on last pages of the search. You can try your site on it and see for yourself your skills. But it would be worth paying for a good domain. There are plenty of good ones for 6-10$.

Sadly this tutorial is not helpfull if one has bought the domain from another seller than Google. There was no information what one should do for DNS records and for the mapping of the domain.
I am trying to use Google sites to make simple landing pages. How can I create landing pages and point them to a domain like www. mydomain.com/googlesitepage I want my regular website to be at the main domain and have the option to make a /googlesitepage once I prove ownership of the domain. Do not ignore verrification. You can open up the web google.com/webmasters/verification then follow the steps there. Hope this helps.

The option now appear in the settings (little round wheel) at the top right corner.

You need to set-up a 301 redirect. You can do this through your domain provider.
